Samsung has announced the Galaxy Chromebook 2, a fresh take on its ultra-slim Chromebook series. Where last year’s pricey Galaxy Chromebook impressed with a 4K screen, this year’s machine dials things back a bit to reach a lower price point.

Samsung says it is targeting a different class of user with the Galaxy Chromebook 2. The original Galaxy Chromebook unabashedly went for the top end of the Chromebook market. The sequel hopes to appeal to those who started with low-end Chromebooks and who now want more from their machine. It’s still a premium device. Samsung insists that the Galaxy Chromebook 2 packs premium sound, powerful performance, and more comfortable typing — all in an ultra-slim profile.
The outer portions of the chassis are still aluminum, but Samsung said it switched to plastics for the inner sections. This helped cut down weight and cost. The machine weighs in at 2.71lbs and measures just over half an inch thick. Samsung improved the typing experience with a smidge more travel in the backlit keys. The Galaxy Chromebook 2 comes in red and gray.The screen still measures 13.3 inches, but the resolution has been reduced from 4K to Full HD. More importantly, the display relies on QLED technology. The switch to QLED doesn’t necessarily offset the loss in resolution, but it helps in one area the original Galaxy Chromebook sorely lacked — battery life. Samsung didn’t make any new claims concerning the Chromebook 2’s battery life, but the screen changeup more or less guarantees a dramatic improvement. That’s good news for users. The display retains touchscreen functionality and S Pen stylus compatibility, but the Chromebook 2 does not pack a stylus in the box. You’ll have to spring extra for a stylus if you want one.

Two processor configurations will be available. At the lower end, you’ll see an Intel Celeron 5205U processor with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. At the higher end, you’ll get an Intel Core i3 processor with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Either way you get Intel UHD graphics.

Other niceties under the hood include Gigabit Wi-Fi 6, AKG-tuned stereo speakers, a 720p HD webcam, a dedicated security chip, and automatic background updates to prevent tampering, viruses, and malware. There are two USB-C ports, one on either side.

It's a common question: Your iPad and iPhone share the same connector, but their power adapters are different sizes and have different wattage ratings. Let's say you're on the go a lot, and you'd prefer not to lug around multiple adapters. Can you use the higher-wattage adapter on both devices?

The short answer: Yes, you can. And if you want a faster charge, we encourage it. Apple explicitly approves of using its chargers across all devices that accept Lightning cables. That’s because modern electronics have systems to ensure they draw the appropriate amount of power—enough to charge quickly, but not too much that it’ll damage the device. At least not immediately.
Anecdotally (and with confirmation from Apple), iOS devices charge much, much more quickly with a higher-watt wall brick. If you have an iPad Pro, and you charge it with the 29-watt MacBook USB-C charger, it’ll fuel up in half the time compared to the iPad’s included 12-watt charger.The difference between either of those chargers and the 5-watt charger that comes with an iPhone will be just as dramatic. That’s because the difference between the iPhone and iPad adapters is the rated amperage. An iPad charge brick is rated to handle 2.1 amps, while the smaller iPhone charger is rated for just 1 amp.

But the amperage rating is only a measure of the charger’s maximum capability. The actual amperage is determined by the load (i.e., the iPad or iPhone). According to Steve Sandler, founder and chief technical officer of the electronics analysis company AEi Systems, modern battery-powered electronics have a lot of complexity between the charger and the battery, including battery-charging circuits within the device and battery-protection circuits in the lithium-ion battery itself.

These circuits are designed to manage the flow of electricity to the battery, and if the circuits inside the iPhone were designed to tolerate 1 amp, but are routinely exposed to 2 amps, that could stress the system over time.

Yet another high-profile app is now available from the Microsoft Store, as AMD has just released a Windows 10-optimized version of its Radeon Software app.

Previously available from AMD’s website as a manual download, AMD Radeon Software is a tool that comes in handy to Windows 10 users whose devices are equipped with AMD graphics cards.

The app lets them control various settings of their GPUs and install the latest drivers when they are released.

The Windows 10 version doesn’t bring any substantial improvements over the existing version published on AMD’s website, but on the other hand, being published in the Microsoft Store means it’s easy to update it to the latest release when it becomes available.

The Microsoft Store version of AMD Radeon Software requires Windows 10 Creators Update (version 1703) or newer, and this is just alright given that for consumers, only Windows 10 April 2018 Update (version 1803) and later is supported.

Next month, Microsoft will also discontinue Windows 10 version 1803, and the only supported versions will be Windows 10 October 2018 Update and May 2019 Update. A new release called November 2019 Update is also expected to launch in a few weeks.

Microsoft has been struggling to bring high-profile apps to the Microsoft Store for a while already, and AMD joining the effort is without a doubt good news. This Microsoft Store version of AMD Radeon Software can also be installed on devices running Windows 10 in S Mode, which is limited to apps published in the store and where installing Win32 software is blocked.

Needless to say, despite being published in the Microsoft Store, AMD’s Radeon Software continue to work exclusively on PCs.
