mrksquare: My grand father bequeath the only land he had to his first daughter. my dad being the first son inherited his father's house alongside his younger brother. Amongst the ijaws, our women do inherit father's estate. But our land tenure system is patriarchy in nature. But that doesn't mean we do not give land to women. Women didnt marry but had children may be given land based on compassion ground. I THINK THIS THING IS THE SAME ACROSS AFRICA, EXCEPT YORUBA LAND. THE YORUBA ARE TRYING TO USE SUPREME COURT TO IMPORT IT TO IGBO LAND BUT IT WILL NOT WORK. |

You can teach them to be responsible about their properties and ensure it is for your grand children and their own grandchildren male or female. Don’t raise your daughters thinking they are less than. They will carry that thinking everywhere in their life, including their matrimonial home and that is a disaster waiting to happen. We all don’t know when our time is up on earth and what may happen to our kids. But we can try to ensure that after all our struggle, they are ok. baby124: Yoruba don’t disinherit their daughters and make them destitute. They always have a place to stay as long as there is a family house. Plus it makes them empowered so that no man will maltreat or kill them. It is Yoruba men that created this culture to protect their daughters. What Igbo men choose for their daughters is their problem, but it’s rather unfortunate. As for you, never ever put your daughter at such a disadvantage in life and to the mercy of a stranger you call son-in law.
You will not like what will happen to your daughter and grand children should she fall in wrong hands. You can also will her the property or buy property that will be hers that is not ancestral to protect her and train her to have a survivorship clause where it goes to her children and never the husband.
I have properties from my father and all those properties will go to my girl children and males too. But the girls will have more. I am training them too to pass it on to their girls too, 2:1 female:male grandkids. SO POOR MEN IN YORUBA LAND, DAUGHTERS ARE DESTITUTE BECOS THEIR FATHER DONT HAVE ANY PROPERTY FOR THEM TO INHERIT? |

webizone: "And if a man dies, AND LEAVES NO SON, then the daughters gets the inheritance. And if he LEAVES NO DAUGHTERS, then it's shared amongst his brothers."
You deliberately left that part. But I am not against the daughters getting something though. DAUGHTERS GET TO KEEP THEIR FATHER PROPERTY, IF HE HAS NO SON. HOWEVER, THEY DO NOT GET A SHARE OF HIS ANCESTRAL LAND AND PROPERTIES, THAT GOES TO THEIR FATHER'S BROTHER. AND HIS SONS. MOST IMPORTANTLY, FATHER INHERITANCE GOES TO HIS WIFE AND NOT HIS DAUGHTER. ONLY WEN THE WIFE DIES CAN THE CHILDREN INHERIT PROPERTIES. |

Verily, their men need to stop wearing that red cap & head warmer coz it's proven by WHO that those head coverings prevent good reasoning/judgement especially in our tropical region. IF ONLY U KNOW HOW STUPID U LOOK ON FP, U WONT JUMP INTO OTHER PEOPLE CULTURAL MATTER, LIKE DAT. NO IGBO FAMILY WILL GIVE INHERITANCE TO THEIR DAUGHTER, SHE IS MEANT TO FIND A HUSBAND AND NOT STAY AND MARRY HER FATHER FOR INHERITANCE, WHICH BELONGS TO HER MOTHER. IF THEIR MOTHER PASS, IT GOES TO THE SONS OF THE LAND. I AM TALKING ABOUT ANCESTRAL LAND. HOWEVER, MONEY AND OTHER STUFF, SHE CAN INHERIT. |
