KANO (AFP) – The leader of Nigeria’s Boko Haram Islamists, Abubakar Shekau, has claimed a daring December 20 raid on a military barracks in the restive northeast, in a video obtained by AFP Friday. The insurgents stormed the barracks in the town of Bama in a convoy of trucks before sunrise, opened fired on the soldiers inside then torched the compound. Several witnesses said the gunmen kidnapped soldiers as well as women and children. “Our fighters stormed the Bama barracks,” Shekau said, while seated on a mat and flanked by a group of armed men. Shekau has released a series of videos since taking control of the rebel group more than three years ago. The latest recorded statement was delivered to AFP through the same channel as previous messages. “This is a victory from Allah,” said the wanted insurgent leader after claiming to have destroyed “21 armoured tanks” and killed “multitudes” in the raid. The military has not released a death toll from the barracks attack and rescue agencies have largely been barred from working in the northeast since at a state of emergency was declared in the area in May. According to the defence ministry, more than 50 “terrorists” were killed when ground forces backed by fighter jets pursued the fleeing Islamists after the raid. Residents told AFP that an unknown number of civilians were killed and four villages destroyed during the military response. Shekau has been declared a global terrorist by the United States, which put a $7 million (5.1 million euros) bounty on his head. Nigeria has separately offered 50 million naira ($300,000) for information leading to his capture or death. In the video, Shekau appeared to mock the notion that one of his loyalists would betray him in exchange for a reward. “What is 50 million naira? We do not worship money. As for those who are in our midst, Allah has taken care of them,” he said. The Bama attack was the second major strike on the military in the northeast this month and was seen as a reminder that more than seven months into a military offensive aimed at crushing the insurgency, Boko Haram remains capable of striking high profile targets. The group’s four-year insurgency, which seeks to create an Islamic state in Nigeria’s mainly Muslim north, has killed thousands. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/12/boko-haram-says-attacks-barracks-victory-allah/#sthash.aiqKvhEK.dpuf

By Paul Bassey Last Tuesday, I was in my car, when I happened on a discussion on Brila FM. The topic had to do with the evaluation of the reported trip of Kelechi Ihenacho to ManCity for trials. As I listened to contributions bordering on praise and good wishes, I was compelled to phone in and express my personal opinion, that of disappointment, that I believed and strongly too that Ihenacho for going to ManCity was making a big mistake. By the time I finished my submission, nearly all the listeners agreed that I was majorly right. We will come back to this. Kelechi Iheanacho The story has it that the young man, the best U-17 player in the world, invited to fight for a place in the CHAN squad woke up one day in camp in Abuja to see an “agent” come to take him to England for trials. Eagles chief coach Stephen Keshi, rightly, walked out the agent, but had to succumb when Ihenacho’s father called in to authorize the release of the young man to the agent. For me, that was a bye bye to a possibility of him making the CHAN squad to South Africa. There was no way he could leave camp at that time and comeback to make the CHAN team, a golden opportunity to launch himself onto another pedestal of glory at the highest level. I told the popular sports station that as far as I was concerned, Manchester City has no defined youth policy and there was no way Ihenacho will be expected to go through the ranks, not to talk of breaking into a team whose trade mark is the acquisition of finished products, superstars, for the sole purpose of winning trophies. I made reference to that popular satire I published on this page on Monday November 25 where I drew the attention of the country to the possibility of parents of the U-17 squad leading their wards astray if not well counseled and directed. Permit me to quote the portion where I wrote that “…..I give you the classic case of Mikel Obi and how two great clubs Man U and Chelsea were fighting for him. On paper, Man U was the better choice, but a lot of other factors were taken into consideration in counseling him, including the possibility of playing regularly and the presence of Africans in the team that will help him settle down faster, and today Mikel is one of the world’s greatest footballers whose profile rises daily…” The argument is that if Mikel had gone to Man U, he would not have broken in as fast as he did in Chelsea. The argument is that perhaps he would not have survived in England due to culture shocks and would have run back home, a luxury that he achieved in Chelsea through the presence of African players who adopted him and nursed him to stardom. The ManchesterCity misadventure may be worth millions, only in the short-term, to the detriment of a famous footballing future and life. Less than four days after the celebrated Man City move, I read in the Vanguard that Man City was planning to send the lad to Ghana, where he is expected to mature etc……what a laugh…. I look back at Pele, Owen, Ronaldo, Rooney, Messi and those superstars who donned their countries colours when they were yet 18. Ihenacho is in that mold. The current example is Neymar whose guardians were not too keen to release him to European wolves until he was ready…….See him now…….. In the plane conveying us back from Abu Dhabi I had the opportunity of sharing with the Honourable Sports Minister, who proposed the idea of making sure that everything will be done to guarantee the future of the first ever nationally accepted U-17 team in a country where the media has been at daggers drawn with authorities over age cheating that only guarantees ephemeral glories. You can then imagine my utmost disappointment when a retreat aimed at tutoring those players and their parents was postponed. Here was a unique opportunity to talk directly to those players especially their parents and guardians on how best to direct their wards for a sustainable and guaranteed football future and that this was likely to be better achieved through a liaison and collaboration with the National Sports Commission through the Nigeria Football Federation, who have the wherewithal and the capacity to galvanise experts for the purpose.. I remember the sports minister saying then that if need be, the retreat will be held in the three major Nigerian languages for effect. The Ihenacho misadventure is a testimony, a manifestation of the need, strong need for us to get that retreat going. Black out for other sports Two weeks ago, I pleaded for increased publicity for other sports, that it was only when I got to Kenya that I read and learnt about two of our basketball teams participating in a continental competition. A colleague, Patrick Omorodion responded and had this to text : “Hello Paulo, just read your column and felt that I needed to react again. Yes you got to know of the Nigerian basketball teams participation in that competition in Nairobi cos they prefer it that way. Every team is supposed to have a media officer on a trip but they will prefer to take somebody else. As the media man on the NBBF Board, they never informed me of their trip or even take my tel number or e.mail to send me info on their performance. Or they could have given me their Morocco telephone number, so I could call and get the info and pass to our colleagues. “This has been the practice with our teams, football clubs inclusive. They feel they can do without the media, but once they fail, they look for the same media they ignored to help them tell Nigerians that they were robbed. “So please don’t have pity on them” This is experience speaking. I rest my case. http:///2ClI8l |

ADO-EKITI — The Ekiti State Police Command has arrested eight persons, including a serving Permanent Secretary in Ondo State over the raid of a commercial bank in Ikere Ekiti last Thursday. The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Victor Babayemi, who gave the hint in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital on Saturday, said the Permanent Secretary and others were arrested in a bush at Ijare, a border town between Ekiti and Ondo states. The Branch Manager of the bank, Ikere was also reportedly arrested following the incident. According to the police, the Permanent Secretary and three others were arrested while performing rituals at night in the bush through which the robbery bandits escaped. The armed gang had stormed a first generation bank at about 5.30 p.m killing two persons and injuring two others during a gun battle with the men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad. The PPRO said the Permanent Secretary and the three others were arrested at about 3 a.m by the police. Babayemi said the men were arrested with a live goat and other fetish materials, adding that they would have been mistaken for robbers. “During the operation, we saw the Permanent Secretary and seven others in white apparel performing rituals, so we had to arrest them to explain their mission at the place at that unholy hour”. The PPRO said those arrested are being interrogated with vital information being obtained. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/12/police-nab-perm-sec-7-others-performing-rituals/#sthash.GOafLdm0.dpuf |

The Ultimatum from the FG to ASSU to call off their 5 months old industrial action or face been sacked, reminds me of my days in the dormitory as a boarding student. A student will threaten to brake the head of a fellow students if he dares crosses his path, the order student will challenge him to a fight if he dares talk to him any how, knowing full well how grave the consequences of their actions would be. The exchange of words will continue till a mediator will come in, "guy its ok, just leave him", the other will withdraw at the excuse that " the don beg for you". But if the rumbling continues without anybody coming in-between them, in other to save a face, not to be termed barking dogs by fellow students, one will hit the other which will create a scene for the onlookers. Sometimes the hall will be divided in two along the line of class A or B, most of the times when its divided in two rather than mediate, we would add petrol to the already fairy furnace, by shifting the lockers and beds there by creating an arena for the fight, one side will be urging his man to fight harder, the other group will also charge their men to hit harder, some times when your man is loosing you would add hand and so the others man will join and it will end up group fight, leaving some with broken head some with severe cut in different parts of the body. The next morning, there would be an emagency assembly before the morning assembly, the massage will be communicated to us on the date to face the disciplinary panel, after the panel, many will be suspended, many will be expelled, many will clean the toilet for a week or month and many others will just receive strokes of cane, and life will continue. We would one day all sit together, talk, joke and laugh, reminisce over our past deeds miss those who were suspended or expelled, we all did these because we were kids. But I ask is FG a kid, is ASSU a kid, I assume they are, Therefore I am appealing to Nigerians of repute not to form cliques and support either group, but to mediate so the gladiators will sheath their sword on the ground that "dey don beg for you, if not" because if everyone decides to clear the arena for the fight between ASUU and FG to rage on, many will not only go home with broken heads or expelled, but the entire school might be close, The threats of sack might go on waiting for a mediator, but if none is forth coming, to save a face, the FG may carry out the threat and this will be disastrous for our dear beloved nation. Jonathan might not want to be termed a "sacking Fashola" but certainly would not want to be called a barking dog. "ASSU we dey beg for FG" do not brake anybody's head, Please no body is sacking you, just call off the strike.
