Workers in Bayelsa State will on Thursday proceed on an indefinite strike over months of salary arears owed by the state government. This is just as the 21-day ultimatum issued by workers’ unions to the Bayelsa State Government to pay all outstanding salaries and allowances elapsed on Wednesday. The state chapters of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress had issued an ultimatum to the government on Thursday, April 28, 2016. They had warned that at the end of the given time, they would take an action against the government if it failed to comply with their demands. The workers are currently owed four months salaries with pensioners being owed seven months arrears and local government councils workers about 12 months unpaid salaries. The NLC, and the TUC, in a joint meeting on Wednesday at the Council Secretariat in Yenagoa, resolved that they could no longer guarantee the existing industrial harmony in the state. The unions said the directive became imperative as government had refused to yield to their demands by relieving workers of the huge economic pains they were going through. http://www.punchng.com/unpaid-salaries-bayelsa-workers-commence-indefinite-strike-thursday/ # |

The Senate on Wednesday mandated the Federal Ministry of Works and the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency to immediately begin the repair of major highways across the country that are currently in deplorable conditions. The upper chamber also urged the federal government and other relevant agencies to establish ambulances on the Highways as a means of saving lives of people involved in roads accidents. The senators gave the directive following a motion by Senator Duro Faseyi (PDP) Ekiti North, on the demise of six prominent medical doctors and their driver from Ekiti State who died in a road accident on April 24, on Abuja-Kaduna highway. The Senate condoled with the families of the departed, the government and the people of Ekiti State, Nigerian Medical Association and also prayed for the quick recovery of the survivors. It asked the Federal Road Safety Corps, to step up public enlightenment campaign on the use of the highway codes and safe motoring. Faseyi, who moved the motion, expressed grief over the demise of the six medical doctors and their driver who were on their way to the 54th Annual Conference of the NMA in Sokoto State. Senator Theodore Orji, in his contribution, was emphatic that something beyond our imagination must have led to series of accidents on the Kaduna – Abuja Highway because late Minister of State, James Ocholi also died at the same spot with his wife and son. Also speaking, Senator Shehu Sani (APC), Kaduna Central, noted that he was the first to have visited the scene of accident on Kaduna Road as well as the injured, explaining that there were no spirits responsible for accidents on Kaduna Road. He asked the Federal Government to ensure that there was adequate funding of Federal Road Safety Corps as well as the establishment of Hospitals on the Highways. He said, “I was the first to visit the injured six Medical Doctors from Ekiti State and the scene of the accident. There are no spirits on that road, but the spirit is in Nigerians to do the right things.” Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over the plenary, noted that road crashes have brought out ineptitude of responsive mechanism of relevant agencies. He said, “It is obvious now that road accidents on Nigeria Roads has brought out ineffective response mechanism and I think this should be looked into with a view to strengthening relevant agencies.” http://www.punchng.com/senate-mandates-fg-to-reconstruct-bad-roads-provide-ambulances/ # |

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has authorised the Attorney-General of Federation (AGF) to commence the prosecution of a Lagos businessman, Innocent Chukwuma, his company, Innoson Nigeria Limited, and four others for alleged forgery. The ruling of the presiding judge, Justice Saliu Saidu, was based on an application filed before the court by Ministry of Justice that the AGF has taken over the prosecution of the accused persons. This was objected to by the prosecutor from the office of the Inspector- General of Police. But after listening to the submission of the counsel for the two parties, the court decided that the Attorney-General of the Federation should begin the prosecution of the accused persons. Consequently, the AGF filed an amended four-count criminal charge against the accused persons. Mr. Diri alleged that the accused persons harboured an intention to defraud Mitsui Osk Lines via the falsified the documents, which were used as collateral to obtain a loan of N2.4billion from Guaranty Trust Bank Plc. The loan was for the purpose of clearing of the imported items. All the alleged offences are contrary to and punishable under sections 3(6),1(2)(C) of the miscellaneous offences Act Cap. Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and leaders of Fulani/Shuwa Arab herdsmen in the state have banned grazing and rearing of cattle at night in the state, Vanguard reports. Also banned are the carrying of firearms or any form of ammunition by the herdsmen and movement of cattle from one location to another at night in the state. This decision was arrived at during a peace committee meeting made up of representatives of the various interest groups from the Fulani/ Shuwa Arab Community and representatives and security agencies, among other stakeholders in the state. During the meeting convened by Ugwuanyi, and also attended by leaders of some communities affected by the herdsmen menace in the state, it was also decided that compensation would be paid by herdsmen whose cattle destroyed farm crops while the communities would pay for any cattle killed by their members. The governor according to Thisday had convened the meeting in furtherance of ongoing efforts of the state government to find a lasting solution to the lingering clashes between Fulani herdsmen and their host communities, especially in the wake of the recent Nimbo killings. It was also decided that violators of these resolutions will be made to face the full wrath of the law. http://m.news24.com.ng/nigeria/National/News/herdsmen-killings-enugu-bans-cattle-rearing-grazing-20160517 # |

Abuja - The Nation Industrial Court has restrained the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and other labour unions from embarking on their proposed strike on Wednesday. The Federal Government had on Tuesday dragged the NLC, TUC and their affiliates before the National Industrial Court seeking to stop the looming strike threatened by the Labour group over the fuel pump price increment. The Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN) was said to have led the federal government's team before the industrial court led by Justice Babatunde Adejumo, the President. When asked by the presiding judge, how the AGF knew the NLC was planning to go on strike Malami said he saw a statement issued by the labour union on their website and that the statement had been published by the media. The meeting between the labour unions and the federal government on Monday was deadlocked as both parties refused to shift ground. The labour unions had asked the federal government to reverse to the old fuel price of N86.50, but the government pleaded with the labour organisations to see reasons with its action and shelve its planned strike, saying it was open to dialogue with the bodies. In attendance at the meeting were the NLC president Ayuba Wabba; NLC General Secretary, Peter Ozo-Esun; NUPENG president, Igwe Achese; PENGASSAN President, Olabode Johnson; TUC President, Bobboi Kaigama; Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige; Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Senator Ita Enang; and the Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole. http://m.news24.com.ng/Nigeria/National/News/breaking-court-stops-labour-from-going-on-strike-over-fuel-price-hike-20160517 # |
