How corrupt is the government of President Goodluck Jonathan? The answer may vary depending on who is interpreting the latest global corruption index from Transparency International. According to Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) for 2014, Nigeria is up eight places to 136 out of 175 countries ranked by the index. The government has unsurprisingly interpreted this to mean that Nigeria is “winning the war on corruption under President Goodluck Jonathan’s watch.” The government has also said in a rather celebratory tone that, “It may not be immediately apparent to those who do not understand the dynamics of applying creative techniques in upturning an age-old habit that has cost this country a lot in terms of financial resources; but to those like the officials in Transparency International knowledgeable in the nuances of fighting corruption, a lot of grounds have been covered.” Two central observations become clear; firstly, the statement seems to take a dig at government’s critics for lacking “creative techniques” in the fight against corruption. But creative techniques? I’m sorry; no serious observers of the government’s record will succumb to this cheap shot. Secondly, the government also may be accused of inconsistency and political opportunism because having previously questioned the validity and credibility of the index, now seems to be its strongest ‘apostle’ by suddenly acknowledging the ‘knowledge’ of Transparency International “in the nuances of fighting corruption.” The government’s response is nothing more than a standard public relations tactic. But this triumphal tone needs to be moderated; and the government’s real record in the fight against corruption has to be placed in proper perspective. The country’s current ranking is clearly better than its scores for 2013 but it doesn’t really tell us something we don’t already know: that this government is still considered highly corrupt, as the country still ranks in the bottom half of the index. As a matter of fact, Nigeria shares 136th position with well- known corrupt countries like Cameroon, Kyrgyzstan, Iran, and Lebanon. The CPI ranks countries on a scale from 0 (perceived to be highly corrupt) to 100 (perceived to be very clean). More than two-thirds of the 175 countries surveyed, including Nigeria, scored below 50. Nigeria is clearly not the country with the lowest score on the index (its score was 27%), but according to Transparency International, any country that scores below 50% on the index is still considered “highly corrupt.” This shows that corruption is rife as it ever has been in the country, making this government one of the most corrupt on earth This is therefore no time to feel comfortable with Nigeria's sheer mediocrity on the index. But the government’s response says something about diminished expectations for a country that is endowed with enormous human and natural resources and should be doing much better in terms of socio-economic and infrastructural development to see the 27% on the index as good news. Millions of Nigerians who continue to live from hand to mouth, unsure of the next meal, while their 'leaders' enjoy the commonwealth with their families and friends certainly won't celebrate this score. And they won't celebrate a score that still shows a serious breach of the country's international anti-corruption obligations and commitments. It would seem that the government doesn’t even understand the depth of disgust Nigerians feel for the increasing level of corruption among high-ranking government officials and the impunity of perpetrators. For many years President Jonathan has devoted dozens of speeches to rooting out corruption. For example, the President once promised to “fight for justice, for all Nigerians to have access to power, for qualitative and competitive education, for healthcare reforms, to fight corruption, and to fight for your rights.” But it is now another election time and he has not even published his asset declaration (to show the way in the fight against corruption) let alone “fight for your rights”! Under the President’s watch, no high-ranking public official has ever been brought to account for corruption, despite widespread and increasing allegations of corruption at the highest level of government. By celebrating a marginal movement on the index, the government isn’t focusing on the job of fully and effectively combating corruption by high-ranking public officials. Instead, it is downplaying the magnitude of the problems, and seems to be kidding itself and kidding millions of Nigerians. This is unwarranted, counterproductive, and on balance, does more harm than good. This government has to come clean and be straight with the Nigerian people on its record in fighting corruption. But Nigerians are not fooled, as they are very aware of the lack of integrity, trust and credibility of their political institutions and the lack of quality behaviour from their politicians generally. They know pretty well that corruption is still a major problem in Nigerian politics, with various government agencies becoming deeper and deeper involved with the widespread use of political appointments even at the highest level of government. The simple fact of the matter is that Nigeria’s corruption is now institutionalised into the political system and where democracy has been replaced by “Nairaraincracy” (or more accurately “Dollaraincracy”, as most of the country’s politicians consider US dollar as the legal tender) and where politicians are elected to provide self-serving favours to donors and “godfathers”. It is clear that the government is still largely run for the benefit of the very rich and socially and politically connected. When people say, ‘it is not what you know but whom you know’, there is a problem. Corrupt judiciary and weak anti-corruption mechanisms well illustrate the damaging lack of political will by this government to confront corruption and impunity of the corrupt. Serious human rights violations, including poverty, crimes against humanity and the environment are now considered normal. Yet, lack of prosecution of high-ranking government officials for corruption has created an impression that they are above the law. No wonder, then, that corrupt officials are so unfazed in their wrong doings, they are all doing it openly and lavishly and don’t even bother to hide their misdeeds. Unfortunately, the more corrupt the country becomes, the less motivated its leaders and politicians are to end it. This doesn’t present much hope for the future. But we can’t simply throw our hands up in the air in frustration. Progress is not only possible but necessary as it is simply unacceptable to continue with ‘business as usual’. The government will need to get to work and move swiftly to improve the independence and freedom of action of the anti-corruption agencies to genuinely fight corruption. These agencies should be free to investigate and prosecute any allegations of corruption, not just those the government has a partisan interest in seeing pursued. It is time for the government to let the country’s anti-corruption agencies off the chain and allow them to prosecute those indicted by: the KPMG report, involving large-scale corruption in the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC); the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) audit report, which exposes 10 years of corruption in the upstream and downstream sectors of the oil and gas industry; ‘pension funds corruption report’; ‘corruption report’ in the capital market, and of course the case of the missing $20 billion from the account of the NNPC. Some level of transparency and accountability won’t hurt the country. In fact, it will ensure better governance and the returns for effective enjoyment of human rights by the citizens will be huge. One can only hope that the government will wake up and genuinely begin to address corruption and associated human rights violations. Nigerians deserve this. The success (and sustainability) of the country’s democracy depends on this. And this is the most important promise for the politicians to take to the February 2015 elections and subsequently keep if elected. Olaniyan, author of ‘Corruption and Human Rights Law in Africa’, is Legal Adviser, International Secretariat of Amnesty International, London. |

season greetings |
Here are 13 tips on saving money to ease the stress this holiday season: 1. Shop early Frantically buying gifts at the last minute when stores are picked over and time is limited will lead to overspending. Buyers in a time crunch may choose an expensive gift to compensate for not spending weeks planning out a thoughtful gift. Shop early, perhaps even before the official holiday shopping season begins. 2. Have a gift buying plan “Write down everyone you plan to buy a gift for, no matter how small the gift may be. Include ideas of what to give each person, along with the maximum amount you’re willing to spend. Don’t forget to list the people who will receive holiday tips, such as your doorman, babysitter and mail carrier,” recommended Real Simple. And before entering a store with money in hand, know exactly what to buy and where to find the best price. 3. Set a personal price level and pay in cash “‘People are turned off by the word budget because they envision spreadsheets, but it can be simple,’ says Mary Hunt, personal finance expert and author of “Debt-Proof Your Christmas.” She suggests taking a look at your finances, setting an absolute number for what you can spend, and then sealing the credit cards away in an envelope, so that you won’t be tempted to use them,” Forbes reported. 4. Secret Santa For big families or grown children, the best way to save money is to have a Secret Santa tradition. “We often employ the Secret Santa method for the adults in our extended family, because with all the siblings and parents things can add up pretty quickly! Rather than try to spend $50 on everyone in each family — which would total $500 — we each pick one name to buy for, with a set price range of $100 to $150 per person. This cuts our costs pretty much in half. Plus, this method makes sure that the adults each get a nice bigger gift rather than a whole bunch of smaller gifts,” Scarlet Paolicchi, a writer on the Family Focus Blog, told Time. 5. Give gifts of experience or service “Meaningful gifts don’t have to be extravagant and costly. Consider giving experience gifts — whether that means buying tickets for a ball game or making plans to take the kids to a matinee movie,” the Time article said. Gifts of spending time together or giving back to the community can be the most meaningful and memorable. 6. Give a “combined” big gift to the kids Instead of giving a big gift, like a new Xbox or iPad, to every child, give small individual gifts and one large combination gift. The expensive combination gift can be Santa’s present while the parents can give smaller, personal gifts. 7. Get creative with non-family gifts Family members probably expect traditional gifts, but friends, coworkers and neighbors will feel just as appreciated with a batch of ginger snaps, a handwritten note or a jar of homemade raspberry jam as with a gift certificate. Always opt for something personal (and edible) if the budget is tight. 8. Cut down on your gift list “When you include extended family, friends and service workers — colleagues, school teachers, delivery people and security guards — your holiday gift list can get long. Hunt recommends writing everyone down and then prioritizing them. Typically your spouse and children would be at the top, followed by close family, and then the extended network toward the bottom. Consider taking some names off, or come up with a plan for spreading your budget out in a smart, creative way,” suggested Forbes. 9. Homemade decor Michelle Jones of the Better Budgeting blog recommends these cheap décor tips to save money: buy decorations after the holiday for next year, save all child-made artwork and crafts, string popcorn and cranberries on the tree and around the house, bring pine cones, boughs and acorns from outside into the home. Invest in an artificial Christmas tree to save money year after year. 10. Compare prices Use mobile apps, like Amazon Price Check, Google Shopper, Shop Savvy, Red Laser and Price Grabber, to compare prices before purchasing a big item. Make sure to check online stores before entering brick-and-mortar stores. 11. Host a potluck “Just because you’re on a budget doesn’t mean you can’t have friends and family over to eat and be merry. This year, rather than providing all the catering yourself, Hunt recommends having a potluck, where everyone brings a component. Another way to save on the holiday party is to move between houses for each course, so that multiple people in your group can host a party and show off their homes,” wrote Forbes. 12. Tell your children to pick one item Tell children in advance to limit their wish list to one item. This doesn’t mean that in practice parents are held to only buying one gift per child, but this strategy curbs childhood greediness. Also, if one is on a tight budget, it is important to explain the situation with children so they understand why they didn’t receive as many presents as their friends at school. And make up for a smaller bounty with fun and inexpensive kid-centered activities during the holidays. 13. Set a budget for next year In January, accountants suggest that couples and individuals plan out a detailed budget for the coming year. That budget should include a spending quota for Christmas presents and activities. Take it a step further and divide that quota by 12 and put away holiday money into a savings account each month throughout the year, Time recommended. source: national.deseretnews.com

could this be beef... |
For all of you that were doubting the end of the beef between Davido and Wizkid, here’s more proof. Davido has responded to Wizkid‘s congratulatory message concerning the Headies awards he won. Wizkid had earlier tweeted at Davido congratulating him on the success: ‘And congratulations to last night winners @olamide_YBNL @iam_Davido @patorankingfire and everyone that won! Blessings.’ A few minutes later, Davido responded on Twitter, simply writing: ‘Eleniyan.’ Davido and Wizkid’s beef begun months ago and it’s clear that the duo are now making efforts to bury the hatchet, beginning with the two of them hanging out together at Escape Night club over the weekend. she said she didn't steal him.. |
In one of her most candid interviews ever, actress Stella Damasus opened up about her life, struggles, her first and second marriage & what we care most about, her relationship with Daniel Adenimokun. She said she didn’t steal him and implied that when she met him, he was already single. Speaking with Emma Emerson of Golden Icons, Stella Damasus opened up about her relationship with Daniel. She said; “Let me put it this way. Let me help you hit the nail on the head. One of the comments I have seen consistently, over and over again, is ‘Stella snatches somebody’s husband’, ‘Stella the husband snatcher’, which is what has been going on. And I had sworn that I would never talk about it, or even listen or stress myself about this thing but I have decided to do this now, so that I end this once and for all. First of all, let me paint a picture for you and you let me know what makes sense to you. When I looked up the word snatch or steal, ehh, let’s go to the dictionary. It means, forcefully taking something away from its original position. Forcefully. From its original position to another position. Something that does not belong to you. That’s what I gathered from the word snatch or steal. So I looked at me, Stella, and I wondered to myself, how is it possible to go to somebody’s home, and take a man, and take his son, away from his home and say follow me. You are a man, and according to their story, he is happily married inside his home. With his family complete and I walk into that home, to forcefully take a man, abled bodied man, and a kid, away from somebody’s hand and you are there looking at me. How does that work? Did they accuse me of using voodoo? Yes or no? They said no. Okay, did I put a gun on anybody’s head and remove somebody from somewhere? They said no. So logically, if people actually sit down and think about it intelligently, how do you snatch somebody from somebody and the person is there looking at you? So when you see a man who has settled ties with a woman and decides to move on with his life and you feel that there is something in this man that you like and he likes you. I am not a kid. I am 36 years old. I am not about to start hiding myself. I was waiting for somebody to actually ask me this question, because all I have heard for the past two, three years are rumours. They said, blogs said, this said. Nobody has been bold enough to confront me and ask me. So I say, if I steal something from somebody, and the person is really the owner of the thing, you come and ask me, ‘you took something from me, give me back’. But nobody was able to that. And I am like, if I meet an able bodied man that has left and moved on. That is not even in the same house with whoever and is not doing anything with whoever, and both parties have decided this thing is not going anywhere, and they have gone their separate ways, why is it that it easier for the world to blame the woman that the man has decided to end up with? Why is it that it is always that woman that scattered that home? The two people that did things that nobody was there, nobody said something must have happened between this two people but it is always somebody else that is the problem. And I always say, I do not tolerate blaming anybody for your own problems. I have had problems. htttp://vnd.youtube:i4jVTa6Y6fo?vndapp=youtube_mobile&vndclient=mv-google&vndel=watch After my late husband’s death, I got married again and the marriage didn’t work. After eight ( months, it crashed. People didn’t hear much about it, why? We were both mature tounderstand that we came together, we knew that the thing was not working, instead of us to become enemies we will remain friends, let’s just let it go quietly. And we let it go quietly. I didn’t blame anybody else for doing it, he didn’t blame anybody else for doing it. So I am wondering, two people come together they go their separate ways, this one meets somebody, all of a sudden, it is that somebody that is the problem. Did anybody ever ask, what went wrong? Why would a man pick up his son and walk away from his marriage? Was there anytime another woman was the problem until the man moved on with another woman? Nobody brought up Stella’s name, then all of a sudden, ‘oh he’s moved on with somebody else (snaps fingers), it must be her’. How? I am still waiting for somebody to come with proof to say ‘oh when they were still in marriage, when they were still in a house, you came and did this.’ So the reason why I don’t like talking about it is that, there are some things I would say to you and you would look at me like ‘oh wow’ but I don’t want to be derogatory, I don’t want to tow the line that other people have towed by talking bad about people. I would never do that but the stories started coming. At first I ignored it, I just kept quiet, and then it was all over the place, Google, blogs, and I am like, one day, one day, I would tell my story. There’s a reason why I am respecting certain people, respecting certain legal issues that are going on. So there might be some things I may not hammer on, but whenever you hear this person snatched this person’s, you will ask the person, the person that they said was the original owner, what was the person doing when they were snatching the person from him or her? I don’t get it. Do you understand? So I look at it, I am not ugly, I am not dumb. Of all the men in the world, I will now go and look for somebody else’s own and say this is the one I want. If he didn’t come out of it and say I want to be with you and you want to be with me, how? Why would I come and grab…? Am I that bad looking? Am I that old?”

The light skinned actor admitted that his mother is somewhat confused that he doesn’t seem to be inching closer to marriage despite being 38 years old already. Revealing the extent of the pressure that the elderly woman has mounted on him, he said: "My mum was going through my phone contacts this morning and she concentrated more on d female contacts wondering why I’m still single…. The Okoye brothers, Peter and Paul Okoye went downright emotional yesterday at the ‘Headies’ and they revealed something about them that you will not believe! The Nigerian R&B duo composed of identical twin brothers who produce and release their albums through Square Records were winners of the Special recognition award at the just concluded Headies awards. The duo who surprised the crowd at the event with some of their old tracks revealed how it took them years to save their first million naira after they were given their awards. “While we were living in Jos, we lived with our uncle and he gave us – Jude, Paul and Peter just one room to share. It wasn’t easy, we were squatting with a large family. “Somehow, we came to Lagos and after selling our stuffs, we were able to rent a one-room apartment and you know we had no chairs but we did not care. All we were after was how to market our music…..eventually money started coming in but it was small, very small. For a while, we were angry that our names were being mentioned everywhere and peeps would see us to say, ‘I just saw your music on MTV base”, meanwhile we had no TV to even watch the MTV base in our house”. On their first one million naira, they said “The first time we had one million naira we celebrated it. For a long while, all we could save was N850,000 and it was paining us. One day however, we went for a concert and right there we were paid N150, 000, then it was big money. We immediately added it to the N850,000 and voila, we had N1million. We bought drinks to celebrate, we were glad that we were now millionaires. “To the upcoming artiste, you don’t make money immediately, it’s like you are investing in music and would reap later on”. They dedicated their awards to their late parents, wives and kids...
