Succeeding in Tech as a woman is a different ball game. The percentage of women in tech is still low which is as a result of several factors. Even the pay gap is wide too. They solve complex business problems and give efficient solutions. For example, A Business Analyst identifies a problem in the Business process and brings up the team so as to find means of improving the process. If you’ve been told you’ll never succeed in tech as a woman, you’re not alone. We’ll be sharing the stories of 4 Women Tech Founders who encountered such discouragement and pulled through anyway. Yanmo Omorogbe, Co-Founder and COO, Bamboo Osayanmo Omorogbe, who grew up in Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria, had no ambition of becoming an entrepreneur, let alone starting a company. And while she summarizes the adventure towards establishing a financial technology venture, Bamboo, as nothing more than a sequence of pretty fortunate stumbles, she was so well competent to make the most of them. Despite the fact that she now co-owns a fintech firm, she had little interest in technology when she was younger; she always wanted to be a chemical engineer. She ‘stumbled’ into finance and technology when she studied Chemical Engineering and realized it wasn’t something she loved. This led to an interest in finance and working with a private equity firm in Lagos. She learned more about finance and investing and earned the title of Chief Financial Analyst (CFA). Yanmo met people who believed that certain of her ambitions or professional options were just for men. Although she faced many obstacles transitioning into tech as a woman, she was continuously inspired by her mother and grandmother, both of who were successful in their different professions. She believes strongly that society has to make the technological space more welcoming to women. She also encourages women to damn societal constructs and takes the bold step to transition into tech. Melanie Perkins at 35 is one of the youngest female tech CEOs in the world. In addition, as of May 2021, she was one of the richest women in Australia. Currently, her net worth is a whopping $6.5 billion. Forbes named Perkins one of the world’s “Top Under 30 of the Decade” in 2020. Although she dropped out of the University of Western Australia, she didn’t let that discourage her from forging ahead and becoming the best she can be. As you can see in the photo, Melanie is a little into nature and often posts photos of her admiring nature. Talking about this very photo, it is believed that Melanie began to kitesurf to secure funding from the team of kiteboard-obsessed venture capitalists, including Bill Tai, an angel investor. Whatever the story is, we’re happy our girl is such a powerful entrepreneur. Go, Melanie! Julia Hartz, CEO, Eventbrite Julia Hartz is well-grounded in the business and financial world. She is an entrepreneur, investor, and the co-founder and CEO of Eventbrite, a billion-dollar company that has successfully disrupted the ticketing industry. Forbes recently named her in their 40 under 40 list — that is no mean feat considering how hard the struggle to the top is. Julia and her team built Eventbrite to provide a platform where ticket sellers and buyers can enjoy a wholesome experience. Because of how friendly and efficient the Eventbrite platform is, as of 2016, it ticketed over 2.1 million events in 180 countries. Julia could see that the lack of an easy-to-access or self-service solution for selling event tickets suggested that no one was paying attention to the mid-market opportunity. Well, while undoubtedly other factors come into play such as numbers or applications amongst other personal reasons of the employers or recruiters. In any case, it’s important to understand that qualification at a job doesn’t rely solely on professionalism as much as that’s a major box tick. Today, so much emphasis and orientation on personal branding and presentation have been introduced and getting a product design resume is a vital component of that. Again, the emphasis isn’t on the resume as per the content of the resume but in its presentation and that’s where product resume design comes in. There are no rules for use of fonts except in the academic field that comes with its specifications; however, there are many overlooked yet important guidelines to bear in mind. Ensure any font you use is legible and visible both on a screen and in print. Your font sizes can be between 11 and 13 points and if smaller than that, the font becomes illegible and strenuous to read. Be consistent with the way you use several font sizes. For instance, all headings should be the exact size and the same for the rest of the body text. Sans serif fonts are usually a great choice for extra creative or digital areas. Serif fonts still retain their spot in more traditional or old-school enterprises. Avoid utilizing Comic Sans. Not only is it widely detested by people in the design enterprise, but it also gives off an immature vibe. The same can also be asserted for Papyrus. 2. Utilize Visuals to Your Contact Info It doesn’t make sense that you would be seeking a job and not make an emphasis on your contact info. Your contact which is your tel, email and even social media links as required shouldn’t be placed at the bottom of the page but at the top. Make it easier and faster to locate. Use links for easy click and make it as visually pronounced as it should be. There really is no point hiding your details way down. You want to get the job and get it in time and once you qualify, want to be called immediately. It is a turn off that the employers have to search for your contact. Also, when they have to find it at an extreme end of the resume page. 3. Make Content Skimmable You’ve probably heard that people don’t read and that is why you should be direct in your resume content. Do not beat around the Bush or attempt writing along with an essay, it’s not some script job! It takes an average of 6-8 seconds for one to take a look and process information. A lot more don’t care, they are only searching for relevant details so don’t bug them with irrelevant information. Keep it detailed but straight to the point, tell them what they need to know and save them the stories. It’s impossible to read every single word especially when the human brain is bombarded with too many activities. Use columns to help make your resume more skimmable, increasing your chance of actually being read. Columns help accommodate a lot but will also help curb overcrowding of words and pages, making it look neat and presentable. Statements like that are not rare in a seemingly male-dominated world. You must have heard a lot of them. It is also one of the reasons why women shy away from tech. Some more examples of such absurd statements are, “Tech is not for women”, “Women can not handle tech careers”, etc. You can not imagine the number of women who have abandoned their dreams and aspirations in tech because of such stereotypical statements. Many women in today’s world shy away from tech because of these stereotypes. Sadly, some cultures have driven it into the heads of women that they should always settle for less, or compete with men. Break Into Tech With These Words Of Advice From Tobi Afolabi Break Into Tech With These Words Of Advice From Tobi Afolabi Right at the beginning of the lockdown period last year, she had just lost her previous job where her boss told her mean words that not only made her feel bad, but also motivated her to upskill, get better, and use the new skills to break into tech. Tobi Afolabi who has a background in writing and content creation is now a UI/UX Designer. Currently working at Da Design Studio as a Design Writer, she spoke with me about her journey into the field, what motivated her choice of speciality, and all she’s learnt in the past year as a tech babe. If you’re looking for how to get into tech and how to get started in IT, you definitely need to read these 5 pieces of advice she had to share. Start with your current skills. When Tobi decided to go for UX/UI design, it was majorly influenced by her existing interest and skills in graphics design and use of Canva. She wanted something that would help her improve on those skills and that was more visually focused. In her words, “UI just seemed to be like the next step.’’ Starting out or switching to tech could be very overwhelming. Having to decide what area to specialise in or learn, what in-demand jobs best fit you, etc can all be tasking. Start by listing out the current skills you have and check for what tech jobs you can switch to with those. Tech, just like other industries, requires pretty much the same skills, especially the non coding ones. Sift through job descriptions to see what jobs match your current background, then make the move to upskill by learning all about it. Which brings us to lesson number two. Read and acquire background knowledge, even before you get invested and start practising. After Tobi had decided on what she wanted to upskill her graphic design skills to – UI Design – she then started reading articles, watching videos and also talking to people already in the industry. It was during this time she was told to learn both UX and UI because in some places, people will prefer to hire someone skilled in both, rather than hire individually. So while she was initially drawn to UI design because of her visual interests, she added UX to it so she could stand a better chance in the employment market. When breaking into tech, it’s not enough to take courses and certifications, you’ll also need to talk with people currently working in your field of interest. This will help you get answers to some questions people struggle with when starting in tech. It’ll also provide the right mindset for when you’re fully invested. There are things courses won’t tell you or prepare you for that only experienced people can, which is why number 3 is key. The most important learning resource of all, are other people. That’s a direct quote from Tobi FYI. Having people in your corner who have gone through the same journey getting started in tech or switching from another industry into tech, and can always help with advice, opportunities, resources and feedback on your work can never be overestimated. You need mentors, friends, a community of people like you who can always provide you with help when you need it. So, how do you build/find tech communities as a beginner? Share your work with the public, you’ll attract them. Whether it’s on your Twitter, LinkedIn, starting a Medium blog or building a portfolio, just share your journey and build in public. You’ll be opening yourself to so much goodwill just by doing so. Reach out to people you admire or who are popular in your chosen tech speciality. Follow them on whatever public platforms they own, share their works, interact with them and never be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Something Tobi mentioned in her interview was to ‘always ask for help, you may feel like you’re disturbing them but you’re not and even if you are, they’ll let you know’. Provided you’re being respectful and non entitled to anyone’s time, you’re good to go. Tobi suggests collaborating with other tech newbies like yourself to build something. For example, if you know someone learning to code and you are learning ux/ui design, the both of you can work together to build say a website you can always show as physical proof of your knowledge. This is a great way to get hands-on personal experience and also a way of reaching wider audiences. To build a personal portfolio there are several tools you can use. Tobi suggests Google Sites, a free website builder by Google which requires no coding skills at all. Never stop practising. During our chat, Tobi shared a personal experience where she got a gig in December 2020 but because she had stopped practicing how to use the tools and software (because of a part-time job she got), she struggled for a bit initially. I know saying stuff like ‘practice makes perfect’ and all the variations of this advice may seem obvious, but truly it’s important that you make a conscious effort to stay learning and applying whatever it is you’re learning. This is the only way you get better and stay useful. To help with this, especially if you’re interested in UI design, she suggested Daily UI, a website that provides you with daily challenges to become a better designer in 100 days. Stuff like this exists for other tech areas, just check our resources guide. Asides the advice she shared, she also let us know her best and worst moments so far since she started working in tech. Her best moment was after the very first gig she got, the client sent a message, praising her for the work she did which made them seem like ‘a shining star’ at their workplace. While her worst moment so far was the realisation of how misogynistic the tech industry is. The thought of having to work alongside men who saw women’s issues as frivolous and unserious, made her really sad. Overall, working in IT/tech for the past 1 year has been a really good experience for Tobi Afolabi. A journey that started with words that made her feel bad, and as a way to prove to herself that she can do better, has now turned into a career path that has seen her develop better skills that she uses at a larger platform now, doing big things and making clients extremely happy.
