Being a physically challenged person and a Nigerian makes life even much more difficult or challenging. I have had series of bad experiences with the so-called artisans or craftsmen as the case may be. I would love to share some experiences. But, before I proceed, I didn't put this up for pity or to whip up sentiments or emotional mushyness. I am blessed with a great family and quite a handful of good friends - they are my riches and wealth. Thank God for that. Some terrible ordeals occurred last year, 2015 which almost jeopardize my existence on this planet earth. But, I would share one or two, even three if I still feel the need to. 1. The so-called gear expert: this guy milked me of a whopping sum of #85,000 for a gear of the automatic gear transmission of a I Volkswagen Golf 3. The normal price is #30,000. He bought a different gear and tried to force it into the vehicle. I almost got him arrested but, my wife pleaded to allow him leave. 2. Few days to my wedding I took my car to the panel beater to quickly fix the lock of my car bonnet. He told me he fixed it and I even paid him generously. Although, I complained about the little opening and he waved it aside that it is a normal thing. I thanked him and left. Got on the highway on official assignment with some of my colleagues at work. Lo and behold the bonnet flipped open on motion, smashing the windshield of my car. God so good, I used my expertise to manoveur the car and put it to an halt. We were all unhurt. I went back to the guy after spending weeks on the assignment - he begged and begged. I let it go but, never returned to him again. I was so pissed that I sold off the car. 3. Fast forward to few months later, 2016 - present day. I got another whip, needed someone to fix the hand control mobilizer to enable me drive myself. I got introduced to someone whom claimed to know how to get the job done. I showed him photos after explaining how the calipers function. He told me he understood perfectly. He took the car and said he would return it the following day. The next day came. I called and called and he kept saying he is almost done, that he is test running it. I waited after work for hours. He later returned with the car at 6:47pm. He told me to test run it. I got into the car and tried to test hand control mobilizer. I pulled it forward and discovered the lever was touching the steering wheel(how daft is this man). I was so vexed that I had to roll away from the scene to cool off for some minutes. I told him to unscrew all that I would take the car to Lagos to get it done. I rang Lagos and was told the hand control mobilizer cost #150,000. Did I just say #150,000? Scratch that, the price is #180,000. How marvelous! Conclusively, I think the government should do more in providing mobility aids to the physically challenged in the society. Mtn is doing a great job in this respect. Kudos to them.
