Potential buyers have been exercising caution in purchasing some of the properties put up for sale by the super rich civil servants in the country. Saturday PUNCH learnt that the buyers were reluctant to pay for the properties because of the fear that the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission might trace the structures to them following the ongoing probe of the suspected looters of public funds. The ICPC had reportedly confiscated some buildings owned by public servants whose earnings were said not to support ownership of such structures. Some of the civil servants had thronged estate agents’ offices in Abuja to aid the sale of the properties. Estate agents had said the development could be attributed to the ongoing probe of some public officials for alleged looting and the resultant confiscation of their properties by the ICPC. Findings, however, showed that despite the fact that most of the properties offered for sale were below their market value, buyers were skeptical of purchasing them. An Abuja-based estate agent, who simply gave his name as Akinjise, told our correspondent on Friday that his firm had been contacted by some of the civil servants for the purpose of helping them to sell their properties. Akinjise said the buyers’ fears rose following insinuation that the anti-corruption agency might confiscate the property if they were eventually traced to them. He said, “It is true that people have been coming to our office seeking information on properties, especially buildings, available for sale, but they are being cautious in paying for them. Some of the buyers even sent their lawyers to us to help them investigate the circumstances surrounding the plan to sell the properties.” An estate surveyor, Mr. Dipo Fakorede, said the buyers were reluctant to purchase the structures due to the likely litigation that might result from their acquisition. He added that those selling the properties should also hand the properties over to the actual buyers unlike what obtains at the moment whereby a buyer would have to take the responsibility for possession. Fakorede said, “It is true that there is some reluctance on the part of property buyers because people are being careful because these are properties recovered from people and organisations by the government, so people are being very careful before they buy them. “Ideally, the sellers should give the buyers the occupation of the properties. But with the way things work in Nigeria, it doesn’t happen like that, hence, the buyers have to fight for the possession. You could have a situation whereby some tenants in the properties do not want to leave even if you tell them to, as the new owner, so, it is always difficult to take possession, and that is why such cases end up in court.” http://www.punchng.com/news/probe-buyers-shun-rich-civil-servants-properties/ |
Members of the Oodua People’s Congress on Friday clashed with some youths suspected to be members of a secret cult who allegedly came to disrupt the Osun Festival. Our correspondent gathered that the youths stormed the entrance of the Osun Grooves to disrupt the ceremony, but the OPC members resisted them. One of the youths identified as Yusuf, however, became unconscious after he sustained machete cut on his head as a result of the clash. Some worshippers, who spoke to our correspondent, said the hemp-smoking youths came to harass the peace-loving people at the shrine. Some good Samaritans later took the injured youth to the hospital for treatment. A National Coordinator of the OPC, Otunba Gani Adams, told journalists that the determination of the people made the Osun Festival to bounce back stronger this year. He said, “Osun Festival has proved to Africans in the Diaspora that it is an event which is one of the best in the world. There was a challenge last year because of the Ebola virus, but Osun Festival is celebrated with pomp this year. You can see it from the large turnout of the people here. “We are appealing to the Federal Government to invest in the development of tourist sites. With this, the nation will generate more revenue.” The Osun State Governor, Alhaji Rauf Aregbesola, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Moshood Adeoti, said the state would generate fund from the festival.. http://www.punchng.com/news/opc-members-cult-group-clash-at-osun-shrine/ Cc lalasticala , Ishilove |
The Nigeria Police on Friday warned youths seeking to join the Force against buying recruitment forms from persons parading themselves as agents. The Force made it known in a statement that there had been an overwhelming interest by many Nigerian youths to join the police force after President Muhammadu Buhari’s approval of the recruitment of 10,000 police officers. The President had warned on Thursday that the police should not extort intending applicants. The Force had, therefore, advised applicants to wait for instructions on how to apply, adding that the vacancy would be announced soon. It said, “The high level of interest in the Nigeria Police Force by youths following presidential directive to add 10,000 officers is appreciated. Modalities for the exercise are being worked out by relevant authorities. Vacancy announcement will follow soon. “Don’t download or buy any of the ‘police recruitment forms’ currently flying over the Internet. They are fake, and not from the NPF.” The clarification by the Nigeria Police might not be unconnected with the stern warning by the President to avoid extorting potential applicants, an Abuja-based policy analyst, Mr. Jide Oluyemi, told Saturday PUNCH. He said, “Many government organisations like the Nigeria Police had swindled unemployed youths while they were seeking for jobs. Scores died during the recent immigration recruitment exercise, after paying much to obtain forms and take exams. “I am guessing the police now know they have to conduct this exercise with transparency. I hope this will extend to other government organisations.” http://www.punchng.com/news/police-warn-youths-against-fake-recruitment/ Cc. Lalasticala, ishilove

A former Speaker, Ekiti State House of Assembly, Femi Bamisile, has said that the All Progressives Congress won’t rely on federal might to defeat Governor Ayodele Fayose in 2018 governorship poll. Bamisile, who has declared his intention for the governorship seat, said the party would embark on serious and widespread mobilisation to woo electorate. He spoke on Friday during a courtesy call by his campaign team on the APC’s State Working Committee. Bamisile said, “We are not going to rely on President Muhammadu Buhari or federal might to win the coming governorship election. We have the capacity to defeat Fayose on our own. “In the June 21, 2014 governorship election, we lost to the PDP by a margin of over 80,000 votes. But in the presidential election, it reduced to about 50,000 despite that Fayose did not allow some of our members to campaign. “With this, it was evident that the APC in Ekiti is very strong. I want to assure our leaders that we will win the next election convincingly. But we have to work seriously for it so that we won’t disappoint President Buhari.” Bamisile stated that he had started monthly distribution of free petrol to commercial motorcyclists operating in the state, adding that other critical voting population would enjoy similar gesture soon. The State APC Chairman, Chief Jide Awe, represented by his deputy, Mrs. Kemi Olajide, and a leader of the party, Chief George Ojo, praised Bamisile for coming out at a critical time to give the party a strong voice. Awe urged him to shun violence or any campaign of calumny in his aspiration. He assured that the party will give all the aspirants a level-playing ground and won’t impose anybody on them.
