Click this link to download https://selar.com/422026 "No mata how seriously Hyena dey sick, Dog no dey branch ask am how bodi" - Pidgin Proverb Excerpt: "9th Feb, 1897 Rawson and im forces enta Benin, di British launch full scale military gbege wey otomokpo and ayelala no go fit stop. Di Benin men use dia power fight finish but na cultasses, spears, stones, knives, axes, bows and arrows dem dey use fight . . . Di British ova power dem wit machine guns and canons wey dey spit bombs for mouth . . . Britain succeed burn down Benin Palace into ashes" The year 1897 was remarkable in the history of Benin and it was one of the most significant and tragic episodes in African colonial history. It centers on the violent clash between Britain and Benin. It is a story of exploration, exploitation and expedition. It was a response to the massacre that happened a year before. Benin punitive expedition was a brutal military retaliation. The events led to the destruction of Benin, the deposition and exile of Oba Ovonramwen, wanton destruction of Benin and subsequent large scale looting of the kingdom's treasured artworks like the bronzes and ivories. This incident not only marked the end of the Benin kingdom's sovereignty but also it highlighted the aggressive imperialist policies of European powers in Africa during the colonial era.
