Kabiyesi O! WHICH IS CORRECT?; BISI (BE FRUITFUL) OR BISI (CAN'T INTERPRETE) The above is a subject of homograph and I hope; I do, sincerely hope it gets to you, either by word of mouth or via Facebook or other means....I smile because this could never have been possible in the years past but thank God for technology yet I acknowledge my limited freedom in it especially with respect to 'institutions' like you. As it is often said by you- the Elders, 'Mo sun mo OBA ni iwon ESE kan, mo jina si OBA ni iwon egbeje...ar'Obafin ni OBA o pa!' That being established, I am Oluwatosin Akande, a Nigerian of the Yoruba extraction- Akoko of Ondo State by paternity and Isale-Eko of Lagos State by maternity. Kabiyesi, the argument of civilization origin apart, I believe that the Yoruba are God's treasure to mankind because of our rich and robust heritage on the one hand and because of our knowledgeable, ebullient and vivacious attributes on the other hand. This has made me introspect every gamut of our mores and norms and so far Alaiyeluwa, one of the things that have caught my attention is the above-subject of BISI as a suffix. As a name, be it ADEBISI, OLABISI, SANGOBISI etc, I ask Sir; should it be pronounced the way it is presently done (I put the Yoruba sound-sign beside each version; BISI (mimi) or be pronounced as BISI (mire). Sir, while the first and widespread version is, at best, to me, meaningless, the latter but never-known version makes a lot of meaning or what on earth is the meaning of BISI sounded as mimi? However, I am not old enough to make claims to being a custodian of the Yoruba tradition. Therefore, I pray by this medium that you mediate in this intellectual matter of serious dimension so that we lay the issue to rest. Sir, on my part, I found out from Yoruba Bible research that BI SI, meaning BE FRUITFUL as God commanded us in blessing in the account of Genesis, was what was constricted to form BISI as we ought to be pronouncing this popular name and not BISI which seems meaningless. I stand to be corrected, Kabiyesi o! Kabiyesi, permit me to implore all the beautiful ladies and fine guys called by that name yet I politely crave their indulgence to let us get to the root of the matter so that we can set the records straight. I believe that no matter for how long in centuries or thousands of years, a lie or an error has gone, it takes a dispassionate yet bold attempt, informed by truth, to reverse it. Change-things I see on the horizon, Kabiyesi... Titori naa, mo d'obale fun ori Ade o! Jesus never encouraged me to disregard kings and the l'Oba-l'Oba o! Lekan si, mo se Kabiyesi fun Oonirisa o!
