TOPIC: Never Murmur Against God"

Saturday, July 25, 2015"*

TEXT: NUMBERS 11:10-15*

*"KEY VERSE: “Then Moses heard the people weep throughout their families, every man in the door of his tent: and the anger of the LORD was kindled greatly; Moses also was displeased” (Numbers 11:10)."*
In his poem entitled, “The Will of God,” Victor Knowles of Peace on Earth Ministries stated: “The will of God will never take you, where the grace of God cannot keep you, where the arms of God cannot support you, where the riches of God cannot supply your needs, where the power of God cannot endow you.”
Unfortunately, the Israelites did not realise this, as they were full of complaints and murmuring. Shortly after they had a wonderful praise session by the Red Sea, they complained against Moses and God because they could not get water to drink. Again, as soon as they left Sinai, they complained about the hardships and lack of meat, even though God had been feeding them with manna.
God ensured He fed them with “the bread of heaven.” Instead of being contented with it or pray to God for a change of diet, they remembered the fish which they used to “eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick.” They forgot the bondage they were in Egypt. Moses was infuriated but took the complaint to God, who could solve any problem.
Unfortunately, many professing believers, today, crave for worldly things instead of having their affections set on things above. Some churches have turned themselves into entertainment venues and not places that can melt sinners’ hearts to repentance.
Others have become monetary centres where fellowship bias is for prosperity. Where this is not forthcoming, gimmicks are employed to impress the people. No wonder, God’s presence is never experienced and real Christian character never manifested. We need to earnestly return to the undiluted Christian principles so that we can appropriate the best from God.

*TEXT: HEBREWS 10:19-28*

*"KEY VERSE: “Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised)” (Hebrews 10:23)."*
Shortly before the Roman General, Titus, sacked Jerusalem and destroyed the temple, the Jews who had turned from Judaism to Christianity were undergoing intense pressure and persecution. They were denied their normal rights as citizens, professionals or artisans. In some cases, they were beaten and dispossessed of their property. This made them wonder if they had not made a grievous mistake in accepting Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Saviour.
When this suffering hit them in the early days of their conversion, they remained faithful. But now, doubts and loss of faith began to creep in as the public ridicule, torments and affliction intensified. These Hebrew Christians began to question if the old order was not better after all.
But the inspired writer of the book of Hebrews insists that Christianity is superior to Judaism. He tells the Hebrew Christians that in every way, Jesus Christ is better and greater than angels, Moses and the Old Testament priests.
Our text comforts and reassures believers that whatsoever they have lost here on earth as a result of their steadfast stand for Christ, they would get in return for more precious assets in heaven when the Lord would take them home to enjoy indescribable joy forever.
As the day of the Lord is fast approaching with increasing signs, we must constantly identify with God’s children and “earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints” (Jude 3).

TOPIC: Heart-Felt Righteousness

Friday, July 03, 2015

TEXT: MATTHEW 5:21-26

KEY VERSE: “Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift” (Matthew 5:23,24).

A direct consequence of the fall of man is the perennial inability of people to live in peace and unity. The history of mankind is unfortunately plagued by crisis, tension, upheavals and wars. Mercifully, the kingdom of God has been revealed through Christ, to show forth God’s mould of righteous, interpersonal undertakings.

Our text reveals the Lord’s admonition on interpersonal relationships for mutual co-existence. He cautioned against anger and the use of intemperate and grievous words. He admonished that exchanging gifts with malice at the background is damning. He counsels against having adversaries to avoid courting unpleasant consequences.

God is the giver of every good and perfect gift. He has given salvation and all necessities of life; the strength and ability to do our work and earn a living. He has also given us spiritual gifts. Above all, He gave His own beloved Son. God gives us in love and requires us to do likewise. And if we live like Him, we will not destroy anyone either by word or deed.

As believers, our offer of gift to God by way of tithes and offering should be a grateful response to all His acts of benevolence and blessings upon our lives. To offer such gifts therefore, we must do so with a heart free from every bit of condemnation. Broken relationships can hinder our relationship with God. An unforgiving grievance with anyone should be resolved to make way for a harmonious relationship with God. Only then can we joyfully and confidently offer our gift.

TOPIC: What Displeases God

Thursday, July 02, 2015

TEXT: NUMBERS 11:1-9

KEY VERSE: “And when the people complained, it displeased the LORD: and the LORD heard it; and his anger was kindled; and the fire of the LORD burnt among them, and consumed them that were in the uttermost parts of the camp” (Numbers 11:1).

We often erroneously think that God only frowns at those things we consider to be great sins, like murder, adultery, theft, among others. These are indeed serious offences before the Lord. But just as He frowns at them, so He does towards our everyday habits, like murmuring and complaining.

The Israelites came to this realization the hard way. While journeying through the wilderness on their way to the Promised Land, they began to complain about everything from the hardship in the course of the journey to their diet. God heard their murmuring and it displeased Him greatly. Their rebellious conduct so made Him angry that His judgment descended on the Israelites. He set fire on the Israelites that were at the rear of the camp. In horror at the instant and excruciating death that was sweeping through their camp, the Israelites pleaded with Moses to intervene. He did, as he prayed to the Lord for mercy. But no sooner did this end than the Israelites and those admirers that fled Egypt with them started complaining again about the manna which God has given them for food. Suddenly, this heavenly food became unattractive when compared to their diets in Egypt. Instead, they wanted fish, cucumber, melon, leek, garlic which were their staples in Egypt. They spurned the food from heaven in favour of that cultivated by man! They were not bothered that their complaining displeased God. And a new round of judgment lurked around the corner for them.

God does not tolerate complaints. It offends Him so much because your complaints show you no longer trust Him. More than that, it is a mark of rebellion and expresses doubt about the ability of God to fulfill His promises. Rather than complain when you face hard times, you should call on the Lord for mercy.

"*KEY VERSE: “There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” (Genesis 39:9).*"
Great leaders always exercise self-discipline. Unfortunately, our society seeks instant gratification rather than self-discipline. We want instant breakfast, fast food, quick cash from ATMs, fast cars and trains. But success doesn’t come instantly. As General Dwight D. Eisenhower said, “There are no victories at bargain prices”.
The favour of God and Joseph’s own integrity won him the admiration and trust of his master as our text reveals. He was made overseer of the entire household, a privileged position. Joseph had passed the test of adversity. If Satan cannot get us to sin by withholding our needs, he will try to offer what we desire. The test of adversity led to his master’s wife desiring an immoral relationship with him. Joseph resisted the temptation by fleeing the scene of temptation. Although he was wrongly accused by the temptress and later put in prison, he held his head high in honour and purity and kept his dream alive.
Adversity is both a test and temptation. God wants to build us up while Satan wants to tear us down. Joseph found himself in a very difficult situation. Everything conspired to make sin easy and resistance near impossible. He was a slave living in a society devoid of moral values.
Our greatest security against sin is to be shocked by it and call it what it is. How did Joseph pass the test of allurement? Others might regard it as a little fling but he called it what it was - “great wickedness” (Genesis 39:9). Sometimes, we do things we shouldn’t do. Consequently, God sends adversity to purify our motives, refine our dreams and prepare us to realize our visions. When you find yourself in a pit, tempted, maligned or misunderstood, allow it to make you better.

*TEXT: ROMANS 11:25-36*

*"KEY VERSE: “For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles be come in” (Romans 11:25)."*
It is no accident that the world’s eye is turned towards the Middle East. This part of the world is important, not only for its oil, but also because it is the stage on which the final act of God’s redemptive drama will be played out.
In today’s passage, Paul summarized God’s dealings with Israel and with the Gentiles. In order for God to facilitate bringing the gospel to the Gentiles, He had to deal with Israel corporately as enemies. They had rejected the message by His Son, and thus proved themselves His enemies even while they called Him their God. They actively opposed God by preventing people from hearing the gospel. Israel’s corporate stumbling, which is temporary, is called a mystery. In the Scripture, a mystery is not a truth difficult to understand, but a truth previously unrevealed (and therefore unknown) which is now revealed and publicly proclaimed (Ephesians 3:9). When Christ returns at the end of the Great Tribulation, a remnant who have turned from their transgression unto God during the Great Tribulation will be saved.
The salvation of anyone is a matter of God’s grace, not of their own merit and it will be the same for Israel. The salvation of anyone is because of God’s kindness and favour.
When God turned His gospel toward all the nations of the world, many believed it and received the righteousness provided by grace. It is important to point out however, that as God rescinded Israel’s relationship with Him as His chosen people, He will do the same to us if we do not “hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast unto the end” (Hebrews 3:14). This nullifies and sets aside the doctrine of eternal security which states that once you are saved, you are forever saved. Be constant in Christ therefore, and continue to the end.

TEXT: 1 CHRONICLES 9:35-44

KEY VERSE: “And Ner begat Kish; and Kish begat Saul; and Saul begat Jonathan, and Malchishua, and Abinadab, and Eshbaal” (1 Chronicles 9:39).

The world has known so many great names whose lives and contributions stand out like colossus. The impact of their lives has cut across time and boarders. But one interesting thing is that all of them have something in common with every other person on earth. They were born like everyone else. There was nothing that suggested the greatness they were to attain at birth.

As we consider the mention of the name of Saul in our text today, we cannot but reflect on how ordinary his birth was. Nobody had the slightest idea of the greatness that was to become his as the first king in Israel. He was born like everybody else, lived like every other person until God picked him up and turned him to another man. Unfortunately however, he made a mess of the opportunity later in life as he went contrary to the God who chose him.

Here are the lessons there for us. We may not be able to tell what will become of the little lives we see around us each day, like our children and those we have the opportunity to influence. How we need to be careful in handling them and make sure we do not miss the privilege we have to give them our best! No doubt, the trainings we give them now, in one way or the other, prepares them for the future role they will have to play. Can we also see why abortion is a terrible crime? And why it is also not right to fail to give the right care or treatment to our children?

Again, Saul was so ordinary and unknown until God picked him up. It is true that the best in our lives can never be realized until we allow God to take us up. He is the One that can help us best to develop and make use of the gifts and potentials He has endowed us with because He is the One that puts them there. You cannot be at your optimum best until you let God have full control of your life.

TOPIC: Sincere Concern

Monday, June 29, 2015

TEXT: EZRA 10:1-5

KEY VERSE: “Now when Ezra had prayed, and when he had confessed, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, there assembled unto him out of Israel a very great congregation of men and women and children: for the people wept very sore” (Ezra 10:1).

Walter J. Chantry, editor of “Banner of Truth” Magazine, noted: “Our Good Shepherd has become the model for other shepherds. His great concern is the good of the sheep. A good shepherd gives himself to the sheep. Jesus our Lord made every personal claim subservient to the blessing of his flock; even to giving His life that they might live.”

Our text reveals Ezra’s power of prayer. He soaked himself in prayer, confessing, weeping and casting himself down before God. Many people gathered around him. They did not just come to see what had come over him, but they also wept aloud because they too were sad about the sins of the people. Many of them had forsaken the covenant which God made with them. They went ahead to marry strange women, contrary to the counsel of God.

Shechaniah, one of the men, was equally sad because of the sins of the people. Though he was not married to a strange wife, he was sorrowful because some of his relatives did. He, however, knew there was still hope for Israel, especially because God still loved His people. But the people needed to turn away from their sins if they wanted God to forgive them.

Therefore, Shechaniah suggested to Ezra that the Jewish men who had already married strange wives and had children should send them away. Shecaniah pledged that the people would support Ezra in his task. Ezra agreed with the proposal and made all the people to promise to send their foreign wives away, which they did.

In our present dispensation, once marriage has been contracted, there is no divorce till death. It behoves all believers to live within the frontiers of God’s word. Unequal yoke in marriage or business is going against God’s commandment. And anything that is contrary to God’s commandment is sin.

TEXT: REVELATION 16:1-12

KEY VERSE: “And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain” (Revelation 16:10).

Evil, with all that is contrary to the teachings of the Holy Bible, is on such ascendancy that a great number of people are doubting prophecy and becoming “scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation” (2 Peter 3:3,4).

There are people who believe that everything begins and ends here on earth. Standing on this logic, sinful man has conducted himself with impunity, enacting laws and erecting systems that challenge God and His servants. Thus, there are many abominable acts as same-sex marriage, bestiality (man beast intimacy), human sacrifices, senseless mass murders, rape, sacrilegious church worship, blasphemous interpretation of Bible doctrines and scores of other heinous violation of God’s injunctions.

Yet, one thing is sure: God will intervene. At the time of the Great Tribulation, when the true Church would have been raptured, when the blood-redeemed believers would be in great joy in the Lord’s presence in heaven, unbearable torment would be the lot of the wicked on earth (Revelation 16:10).

The world headquarters of the Satan-backed Antichrist and false prophet would be toppled (verse 10), as God rains His wrath of plagues on them and their followers. Their refusal to repent and honour God will be met with fierce angelic rage to prove the superiority of the Creator over mutinous creatures.

The days of this irreverent system are numbered and this knowledge should serve as a sober warning to the unbelieving to abandon their world of sin and darkness and embrace the light and righteousness of Jesus Christ.

*"KEY VERSE: “And the spirit of Egypt shall fail in the midst thereof; and I will destroy the counsel thereof: and they shall seek to the idols, and to the charmers, and to them that have familiar spirits, and to the wizards” (Isaiah 19:3)."*
Often, what makes people to persist in their reckless and indulgent lifestyle is the comfort they derive from their companions in the act. They refuse to see that they are in a slippery path, and are headed to a certain disaster. They would not listen to good reason nor accept wise counsel, choosing instead to draw mental strength from their notorious companions.
The Egyptians were like that. They had all become accustomed to their evil habits and lifestyle. They were incorrigible because of their renown wisdom and great achievements in the field of science. They, therefore, did not see any need for God in their affairs. Before God, they lived as outlaws. This was an assault on the Almighty, and He decided to sweep through the land of Egypt with His judgment. The idols in which they trusted shall be moved at the presence of God, and their hardened hearts would at last melt at the sight of the vengeance of The Lord. Their destruction shall come from within, for God shall set them against each other. Rather than give comfort, they would destroy themselves. At that time, the widely acknowledged spirit of Egypt shall fail them, as would all their idols, charmers, familiar spirits and wizards. They would be hit by natural disasters. They would find help from nowhere, and instead, they shall be governed by a cruel and fierce king, who would show them no mercy.
It is foolish to think that you can make do without God in this life. You may think that you have succeeded having escaped danger on numerous occasions or having benefited from God’s mercies. But evil lurks in the corner for all those who would not listen to the counsel of God to turn from their wicked ways. The thing to do is to retrace your steps from your sinful habits and receive Jesus Christ today as your Saviour and Lord.

*"Key Verse: “For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him: But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance. We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company” (Psalm 55:12-14)."*
The story of Judas Iscariot is a classic example of what a man is capable of doing when overtaken by greed and inordinate love for material things. Here was a man who had the privilege of working closely with the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Yet, he lost his life for pecuniary reasons. He betrayed his Master.
We live in desperate times when unimaginable things are daily taking place. We hear of ritual killings, betrayals and marriages that were conducted on the altar of God collapsing and being dissolved in law courts. A lot of terrible things are happening. Fathers are killing their children; husbands are gruesomely murdering their wives. The national dailies in many countries are filled with stories of bizarre occurrences.
David experienced such a deep betrayal. He was pained and wondered what was happening. He said if the source of his problem was extraneous, he would not have bothered, but that they were within the circle of his friends, confidants, family and even from those he went to the house of God together.
Look around you today, what are those things that cause you anguish? They may be injuries inflicted on you by trusted allies and brethren or family members. Some people have been duped by those they trusted and least expected they could do such things. Some have suffered various degrees of pains inflicted on them by close allies. And some are not even alive to tell their bitter stories anymore. Whatever is your own case, take it to God in prayer because vengeance belongs to Him. Be assured that He still answers prayers today.

TOPIC: Let Your Light Shine Before Men

"Wednesday, June 24, 2015"

*TEXT: MATTHEW 5:13-17*

"*Key Verse: “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).*"
Jesus Christ, in His sermon on the Mount, taught some cardinal virtues of the Christian faith. He particularly described Christians as salt of the earth. Salt is known to be a flavour, which adds better tastes to food and equally helps to preserve the food from going bad.
By this teaching, Jesus pointed out that Christians, through their conducts and lifestyle, should make the world a happier place. They should live a pure life, which should be according to God’s precept, and become an example to other people. This would make the world easier for people to live in. But when Christians lose their Christ-like virtues, they would become like salt which has lost its proper flavour. Such salt will no longer be useful.
Jesus equally taught that Christians, as the light of the world, should not hide their identities. They should exhibit their Christ-like virtues, which should guard others in the proper and right way. It would be foolish, therefore, for believers not to live out the Christ in them, which could amount to hiding a lamp under a bowl. Christians must allow the light in them to shine to help people avoid taking bad decisions.
This shows that in our offices, schools, markets and other places, we should not hide our Christian identity. We should not compromise our faith through dishonesty, covetousness an corruption. Our relations, friends and colleagues are looking up to us as a guiding light to lead the way for them to follow. They may not initially muster the will to resist temptation, but with our Christ-like action, consecration and commitment, they may be converted to Christ and we would have saved precious souls from going to hell.

TOPIC: Infallibility Of God’s Word

"Tuesday, June 23, 2015"

*TEXT: DANIEL 11:1-4*

*"Key Verse: “And now will I shew thee the truth. Behold, there shall stand up yet three kings in Persia; and the fourth shall be far richer than they all: and by his strength through his riches he shall stir up all against the realm of Grecia” (Daniel 11:2)."*
Our text today contains things that were revealed to Daniel after his fasting and prayer for twenty-one days. The man, who appeared to him, told him that three kings would emerge in Persia. After them, the fourth king would come up and he would be richer than other kings. And because of his wealth, he would be very powerful. He would rise up against the kingdom called, Greece.
The man also told Daniel that another strong king would emerge who would rule with great power, but he would have a sudden end, which would lead to the break-up of his kingdom into four. Even though his kingdom would be broken to smaller kingdoms, his children and grandchildren would not rule them. Instead, other people would take possession of the kingdoms but their kings would not be powerful.
Some Bible scholars, who examined Daniel’s prophecy in the context of its fulfilment, noted that all the contents of the prophecy were fulfilled with clinical accuracy. These prophecies were from the Lord who cannot lie. Everything he said then, came to pass. And whatever He has said concerning today must also surely come to pass. It will be wise for all discerning minds not to scoff at God’s prophecies. Instead, they should take appropriate steps to ensure that the damning portents are not fulfilled in their lives.
The accuracy of Daniel’s prophecy shows the infallibility of God’s word. As precise as Daniel’s prophecy was, so also will the events of the end of time as detailed in Scripture come to pass. For those who doubt the existence of hell and the consequence of sin, they will be shocked to discover that God’s word is infallible and that His prophecies can NEVER fail. Beware!

*TEXT: JEREMIAH 9:1-11*

"*Key Verse: “Thine habitation is in the midst of deceit; through deceit they refuse to know me, saith the LORD” (Jeremiah 9:6).*"
Israel had been a backslidden nation. Several years back, a righteous king, Josiah, had arrived the stage with sweeping reforms to restore righteousness in the land. He enthroned true worship by removing the idolatrous priests who had been burning incense in high places at the instance of the past kings of Judah. He broke in pieces the images of idols and drove away the workers with familiar spirits and wizards to enable the people return to the true God and His worship. Sadly, at the death of King Josiah, the people returned to their old ways.
In our text, Prophet Jeremiah itemized the abominations prevalent in Israel for which God was not pleased. The prophet said that the people were “all adulterers, an assembly of treacherous men” (verse 2).
Today, our society is in the same lamentable situation Israel was at that time. There is corruption in high and low places, idolatry of all kinds, and immorality is at its peak. The values that were held sacrosanct years ago have been thrown overboard. Even in unlikely places, worship centres, evils abound. These things that made Jeremiah shed tears are also the concern of genuine men of God today who labour day and night to draw men from the scourge of sin.
The redeemed of the Lord must warn sinners of the imminent judgment of God as did Jeremiah. The purity of one’s Christian faith should be seen by doing what is right; loving others and ceasing from sin. So, the practice of the Christian faith must not be limited to a mere church attendance. Our changed lives must be righteous and holy, a sure signpost for others to take after.

TEXT: MARK 8:5-9

Key Verse: “So they did eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets” (Mark 8: 8 ) .

A global increase in population, especially in developing nations with rising prices of goods, is a serious threat to survival. Severe drought in numerous nations of Africa has made many families to go hungry or at least compromised their diets. In the midst of hunger and scarcity, God has always provided for those who trust in His ability to change difficult situations and provide their needs.

The text of today focuses on the compassionate nature of Christ to always find enduring solution to the plight of those who come to Him. The preceding chapter captures different categories of people with diverse ailments and challenges who were healed and delivered. They were astonished beyond measure, “saying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak” (Mark 7:37). Christ provided food for the hungry and fainting people, to support them and to sustain the spiritual blessings they had received.

Sometimes, we ignore the physical needs of others in pursuit of the spiritual alone. Yet, the two are necessary. Although the multitude did not complain or tell Jesus of their hunger, He nevertheless, recognized the need and supplied food. Sometimes, we are too slow to recognize people’s needs, and even when we do, nothing is done about it. Are there hungry people in your local church? You may not be able to heal the sick but you can provide something for somebody in your local assembly. Identify a needy person today, and allow the compassion of God to move you to meet their needs and lighten their burden. On that score, you will be a true follower of Christ.

God cares for every minute detail of our lives. He is not too busy with important matters alone; He is also interested in every minor or major areas of our lives. “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you“ (1 Peter 5:17).

*TEXT: PSALM 54:1-7*

"*Key Verse: “Behold, God is mine helper: the Lord is with them that uphold my soul” (Psalm 54:4).*"
In her song titled, ‘Victory All the Time’, Leila Naylor Morris, scripted, “They who know the Saviour shall in Him be strong, Mighty in the conflict of the right ’gainst wrong; this the blessed promise given in God’s word, doing wondrous exploits, they who know the Lord.” She encouraged believers to put their trust in the Almighty in all circumstances, for, according to her, victory is sure.
In a world of turmoil, where many people are daily buffeted by all manner of adversities, calamities and deprivations, only those who put their absolute trust in God receive His awesome help for sustenance. While he lived, the Psalmist at various times, tasted the brutality of the wicked. At some points in his life, adversities were his daily companion, but he knew the way to sure solution. He called on the Almighty for assistance. He knew God is the only true source of help, and he was also aware that it was He alone who could judge his enemies and put them to shame.
Our text contains fundamental lessons for every believer in Christ. In times of adversity, God is faithful. During afflictions from the enemy, God is the righteous Judge. When trials and temptations buffet, God is our Refuge and Strength. At all times, we must not be discouraged. We must hold on to our faith till the end.
Believers must realize the source of their problems and learn not to charge God wrongly. Every problem must be taken to God in prayer and the burden must be laid at the feet of Jesus. We need not cringe or fret because He that is with us is more than they that be with our adversaries. Victory is ours.

*TEXT: EXODUS 16:11-21*

*"Key Verse: “And when the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another, It is manna: for they wist not what it was. And Moses said unto them, This is the bread which the LORD hath given you to eat” (Exodus 16:15)."*
In biblical and contemporary times, recorded are myriads of outstanding testimonies of God’s faithfulness in the lives of men. Indeed, in every life, God must have shown His faithfulness in one way or the other. The testimonies of what He did in time past, should encourage us to trust Him even in our trying times.
If God had looked at the oft-repeated failings of the children of Israel, He would have abandoned them long ago. But in keeping to the promises He made to Abraham, the Almighty had continued to be patient with them. It is strange that the people who had seen the mighty deliverances which God had granted them and the sheer favour they had enjoyed, still continued in their sins.
In spite of the murmurings of the children of Israel, God, by His mercy decided to rain bread from heaven to them. He instructed them, through Moses on the method of gathering the manna. Sadly, many of them did the contrary. But God was still patient with them.
Today, God still forbears and He is ever compassionate. He hears when we cry despite our failings. He daily provides our needs and heals our diseases and infirmities. In fact, He protects our lives from dangerous diseases and pestilences which are ravaging the lives of others. We owe it all to God. Rather than continue in half-hearted obedience and lukewarmness, we must wholly yield our all to Him, laying them upon the altar. We should willingly and obediently follow the Lord so that we can truly eat of the good of the land.

*TEXT: EPHESIANS 1:1-4*

*"Key Verse: “Grace be to you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love” (Ephesians 1:2,4)."*
Ephesus was one of the five major cities in the Roman Empire, along with Rome, Corinth, Antioch and Alexandra. It was a commercial, political and religious centre for all of Asia Minor and was also the location of the temple of Diana, the goddess of Athens.
At this time, Paul the apostle had been a Christian for close to thirty years. He had undertaken a trip to Ephesus during his second missionary journey. He wrote to the Ephesians while he was under house arrest. As was usual with him, he warmly saluted them, and desired for them the best spiritual blessing. ”All spiritual blessings in heavenly places” means all the good things God has provided for His followers. These include salvation, the gifts of the Spirit, the power to do His will while here, and the hope of eternal life with Christ hereafter.
God’s choice of saved believers is entirely by His grace. No one takes credit for his salvation. Salvation makes us new creatures in Christ, willing to obey Him and do His will. Our old life was characterized by disobedience, sin, condemnation and death.
But God has graciously shaped our lives and destinies in conformity with His will. Are you one of those the Lord has chosen? Do not spurn God’s invitation; neither drive rough over the sacrifice offered by His Son. Accept His salvation with a grateful heart and you will be glad you did.
