Extraction remains backbreaking manual labour, as machinery frightens birds away. Although the poachers kill thousands of birds each year, Peru’s seabird population has doubled over the past four years. Overfishing and climate are the guano’s industry main threats, as seabirds depend on rich anchovy stocks.
