President Bola Ahmed Tinubu still appears displeased with Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, with tensions reportedly linked to various concerns, including his association and attendance at Aisha Sulaiman-Achimugu’s extravagant birthday celebration abroad last year which sparked media controversy, drawing the President’s attention. The tension may have explained the choice of the President to mark the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations in Abuja instead of Lagos.

Close associates shared the information of the lavish party by Aisha with the President who was scandalised not only by the occurrence itself but by the claims that the paramour had been swaying the Lagos State Governor in matters of governance, especially the deployment of favours in the State.

Indeed the tales of how Ms. Achimugu had become a major influence peddler in Lagos is among what provoked a petition against her to the EFCC which last week declared her wanted in a statement signed by Dele Oyewale, the spokesman of the anti-corruption agency.

In that statement the EFCC accused Aisha of criminal conspiracy and money laundering.

According to Lagos State political insiders “what grieved the President most was how the Governor is said to be at the finger tips of the woman, something Asiwaju is known to deeply dislike, that a woman is controlling a man in the discharge of a position of public trust!”

There are also serious suspicions and allegations spreading in political circles both in Lagos and Abuja that the Kogi born Aisha was the conduit who delivered funds from Sanwo-Olu to the Atiku campaign, a claim already disputed by the Atiku media team.

Both the Presidency and the EFCC have also said the investigation is not linked to Sanwo-Olu or Atiku.

Informed Sources added that the President had also not been very comfortable with the aftermath of the results of the 2023 Presidential Polls in Lagos which he lost to Peter Obi, the Labour Party Presidential candidate.

Specifically, sources close to the Lagos State Governor say the President was aghast that while he lost the 2023 polls with Sanwo-Olu in the saddle, the Lagos State Governor came out victorious couple weeks later in the 2023 polls with a significant margin of victory.

While the President was not expecting Sanwo-Olu also to be defeated, he seems to have believed claims that the Governor didn’t work hard for the Presidential polls like he did the Gubernatorial polls weeks after.

This created some real political tensions between President and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, although many top Nigerian politicians believe the Lagos Governor mobilised significant funds for the 2023 Tinubu Presidential campaigns.

But while there hasn’t been significant show of the tension in public, there are multiple factors that continue to strain their relationship.

Infact, a source close to Sanwo-Olu feared that Asiwaju would have celebrated the end of the Ramadan fast in Lagos few days ago, but may have decided to remain in Lagos because of the frosty relationship between them both.

An Aso Villa protocol source said “even some advance party team of the President had been planning to go to Lagos for the Eid-el-Fitr with the hope that the President would travel to Paris from Lagos, until it was clear that President certainly wanted to avoid Sanwo-Olu.”

The President flew out to Paris from Abuja on Wednesday afternoon, a day after the Eid-el-Fitr public holidays.

One of the major flashpoints between President Tinubu and Governor Sanwo-Olu was the power struggle involving Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa. The dispute, which saw Obasa challenge certain executive decisions by Sanwo-Olu, reportedly created divisions within the Lagos political establishment.

Tinubu, known for his strong influence in Lagos politics, was said to have taken a firm stance on the matter, in a clear support of Obasa leading to friction with the former governor. Sanwo-Olu’s aides confirmed that at least in one instance the President fumed in a phone chat with Sanwo-Olu during the Obasa, State Assembly Crisis that Sanwo-Olu would have to resign.

This compelled the Lagos Governor to procure the help of elders such as Chief Bisi Akande and Aremo Segun Osoba to appeal on his behalf.

Prior to this, rumors circulated that Sanwo-Olu had covertly supported Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), during the 2023 elections.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu may have approved a plan to reorganise the NNPCL with a new Group Chief Executive Officer replacing the incumbent and a new Chairman of the board.

Informed Sources have confirmed to Empowered Newswire that Mr. Bayo Ojulari, a well regarded, former top official of Shell, where he was the Managing Director, Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCo) in Nigeria has been tipped to replace Mele Kyari.

Also, the well-known Mr. Ahmadu Musa Kida, one time Deputy Managing Director of Total Oil will become the new Chairman of the Board of the national oil company.

Chief Pius Akinyelure who was named the Board Chairman in 2023 is now expected to step down in the new rearrangement, details of which are still sketchy at press time.

But there are also indications that Mr. Mele Kyari will stay in office up until the 1st of March, while Roland Ewubare will become Group Chief Operating Officer.

It would be recalled that few years ago Roland Ewubare resigned from the NNPC as Chief Operating Officer at NNPC, amid speculations that both himself and Mele Kyari fell out.

There are strong indications that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would not be attending this year’s United Nations General Assembly, preferring instead to stay home and confront some of the current challenges in the country, Empowered Newswire reports.

Former presidential spokesperson, Laolu Akande, has waded in on the lawsuit statement threatened against the United Nations (UN) by Nigeria's Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohaneye.

Akande clarified that the United Nations enjoys immunity from local jurisdiction and thus cannot be sued in a national court.

Nigeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs had earlier in an address at a press conference in Abuja on Monday, October 16, 2023, threatened to sue the United Nations (UN) for allegedly "mismanaging donor funds meant for Nigeria."

Kennedy-Ohaneye boasted that if the global body did not furnish her ministry with the necessary records of account of all the monies it allegedly sourced from donors in Nigeria’s name, on or before November 15, she would take legal action.

“From the 16th of October to November 15, if we don’t get those reports for Nigerians to see, we are heading to court. They have from 16th October to November 8," the minister had stated.

But featuring on Channels TV’s news documentary programme, “State of the Polity” on Tuesday morning, October 17, 2023, Akande, who formerly worked as a Press Officer at the United Nations Headquarters, New York, United States, in 2002 and covered press briefings at the UN, as well as other assignments for the UN's Department of Public Information, said the United Nations cannot be sued on the account of its immunities most especially to local jurisdictions.

He, thereby, suggested that the authorities in government if necessary should start offering an orientation programme or training for newly appointed officers.

"There is also a need for the authority to have some kind of training or brushing the people up. For instance, a minister said yesterday she was going to sue the United Nations (UN)," Akande stated.

"First of all, the UN has immunity against local jurisdictions, it can’t be sued. And if you have a grudge as much as you expressed, why don’t you go to the Foreign Affairs Minister or the Budget and Planning Minister or those ministries that deal with international agencies?" Akande queried.

Similarly, also speaking further on the need for the President to correct chaotic situations affecting his orders and smooth running of government, Akande wondered on whose authority the sacked Postmaster General went back to work at the weekend after a presidential statement had announced his removal, while a successor was named.

He said, "Then you have a situation of the former NIPOST Postmaster-General coming back after a presidential statement that said that there is a new guy and you came back and made NIPOST to say that you have been reinstated. These are the chaotic situations that the President has to fix,” Akande noted.

Calling on the President to infuse the firepower to the civil service, Akande said, “There is quite a bit of chaos going on and the President has to come in and rein in on this in a very firm way. This just has to stop,”

“But thankfully there was a report that the President has waded in and the person announced by the presidential statement has resumed. But there are quite a few chaotic kinds of stuff we have spoken about and I think the President has to give authority to perhaps the Chief-of-Staff or the Secretary to the Government (SGF), somebody needs to be able to rein in very strongly against this chaos,” Akande said.

The former presidential spokesperson who noted that the “President has enough constitutional powers to take action as the executive head of government on executive matters,” said he need not go for consultation with civil servants on who to appoint, as he made a case for the civil service reform, commenting on the drama that ensued at the Ministry of Works when the minister, a former governor, Dave Umahi, locked those who came late to work behind the gate.

Mr. Fidet Okhiria, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), is set to undergo disciplinary measures due to alleged mismanagement and operational discrepancies on the popular Abuja-Kaduna train service.

Okhiria and his management team are slated to meet with Transportation Minister Saidu Alkali at the Bukar Dipcharima House in Abuja. The meeting aims to shed light on the activities of the railway, Nigeria’s oldest public corporation.

Transport Minister Alkali revealed the decision to hold Okhiria accountable following his unannounced visit to the Abuja Train Station of the Abuja-Kaduna Train Service (AKTS). This flagship standard gauge service commenced commercial operations in 2017.

Citing ongoing complaints of train delays, safety issues, and passenger dissatisfaction, Minister Alkali emphasized that Okhiria must personally address these concerns and adequately explain his performance to avoid disciplinary actions.

Alkali stated, “It is out of a desire to achieve the agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Renewed Hope. So from the experience when the visit is scheduled they’ll be able to put some of the things in place because they are aware you are coming to see.

“So, seeing is believing, as I have seen by myself. I inspected the coaches. Some of the toilet facilities are not working.

“I received a complaint from the security escorts that in the last five months their allowances were not paid and I am happy that the MD of NRC is appearing before the ministry on Tuesday to brief. So, if he comes I am now well informed the lifts and escalators aren’t working, which makes it very difficult for the elderly and the disabled persons to use the train for travelling.

“Therefore, he would explain why disciplinary action wouldn’t be taken against him,” the minister stressed”, he said.

The University of Calabar, UNICAL, management has taken the decision to suspend Prof. Cyril Ndifon, the Dean of the Faculty of Law, due to alleged “violations of the institution’s established laws and policies”.

The suspension comes on the heels of a protest by students in his faculty alleging his involvement in sexual harassment and molestation.

The Quest Times reports that this is the second suspension Prof. Ndifon will face in UNICAL. He was suspended in 2015; however, he was reinstated after being cleared by the police following an inquiry.

The decision to suspend Prof. Ndifon follows his response to a prior inquiry initiated by the University Management. The Vice-Chancellor, dissatisfied with his response, has made the decision to relieve Prof. Ndifon of his position as Dean and has placed him on suspension.

The letter of his suspension reads: “Please, refer to our letter Ref UC/REG/DISC.45A dated August 14, 2023, on your alleged violation of the provisions of the extant laws and policies of the University and your response to the said letter, which was dated 16th August 2023.

“The Vice-Chancellor has gone through your written representations and is not satisfied with your explanations.

“She has, therefore, directed that you should be relieved of your position as Dean, Faculty of Law, and placed on suspension, while the matter is referred to a panel that will be set-up to investigate these allegations.

“The relief of position as Dean, Faculty of Law and suspension from official duties takes effect from August 17, 2023.

“You are to hand over all University property in your possession including all official responsibilities presently handled by you to the Sub-Dean of the Faculty before vacating office.

“You are to stay away from the University premises except while responding to invitation from the
panel investigating these allegations,” management stated.

Following the students’ protest, more than 15 individuals, who claim to be victims of these alleged acts, have come forward and are prepared to testify against Ndifon in a court.

Customs confiscate illicit drugs on Lagos-Ibadan expressway
The acting Head of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, stated that the agency confiscated 4,252 sacks of imported parboiled rice, 299 cartons of codeine syrup, and 5,600 liters of Premium Motor Spirit, among other items, at various locations in Lagos and Ogun States.

Speaking to reporters at the Federal Operations Unit Zone A in Ikeja on Wednesday, Adeniyi mentioned that these seizures occurred within a two-week period in August.

He disclosed that the illicit drugs were intercepted at the Ijebu Ode junction.

“Last week, officers of the Federal Operating Unit Zone A, acting on credible intelligence, stopped a DAF truck close to Ijebu-Ode Junction. An examination of the truck revealed the concealment of 299 cartons of codeine syrup along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway,” he explained.

He expressed his concern that despite the adverse effects of removing fuel subsidies on the economy, smugglers still make efforts to illegally transport petrol across the border.

He stated, “The following seizures of both items were recorded: a total of 4,252 bags of foreign parboiled rice of 50 kg each at Dangote/Imashayi Ogun State, Saki Axis Oyo State, Owode/Ado Odo in Ogun State, Idiroko/Ohumbe Ogun State, Okoko Mile 2 area in Lagos State and Ado-Ekiti in Ekiti State.

“Similarly, 5,600 litres of Premium Motor Spirit were intercepted and seized when smugglers attempted to takeout these strategic resources through the Oja-Odan area of Ogun State.” he continued.

The head of the NCS added that the smuggling of rice undermines the country’s revenue and jeopardizes its food security.

“Other items seized in the last two weeks include 291 bales of second-hand clothing comprising 57 sacks and four jumbo sacks of used shoes, 486 cartons of foreign frozen poultry products, 190 pieces of rugs, five units of vehicles and 170 pieces of used tyres,” he further stated.

He emphasized that the misuse of codeine syrup, primarily by young individuals, can lead to long-term issues such as anxiety, depression, memory impairment, and harm to the liver, kidneys, and brain.

Additionally, he noted that the confiscation of used tires would help reduce vehicle accidents caused by illegally smuggled used tires.
