There are strong indications that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would not be attending this year’s United Nations General Assembly, preferring instead to stay home and confront some of the current challenges in the country, Empowered Newswire reports.

The President who just returned back from a trip to China where he attended the China Africa Forum and a stopover in the United Kingdom to meet with King Charles briefly, is said to have instructed that Vice President Kashim Shettima should represent him at this year’s UN meeting which is themed the Summit of the Future.

Presidency sources hinted Empowered Newswire this morning that “the President just came back from China and the UK, and the next day flew immediately to Maiduguri to see for himself the extent of damage, so he is not favourably disposed to the idea of travelling out again so soon, but rather wants to concentrate at home for the time being, so he can better deal with some of the pressing challenges.”

A formal announcement is now being awaited from the Office of the Vice President who is expected to stand in for President Tinubu in New York early next week.

However several members of the Federal Executive Council who would be participating at the United Nations have started making their way including Minister of Defence, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Solid Minerals and the Minister of the Environment.

The UN Summit of the Future will precede the United Nations General Debate where the heads of states and governments gather annually at the General Assembly.

Themed the Summit of the Future: Multilateral Solutions for A Better Tomorrow the summit will hold from Sunday September 22 to Monday, the 23rd of September at the United Nations Headquarters, New York, while the General Debate under the auspices of the United Nations General Assembly, UNGA commences on Tuesday September 24.

According to the Concept Notes for the Interactive Dialogues of the Summit of the Future, one of the issues to be discussed include the urgent need for reform of the global financial architecture, which has been an ongoing concern in global and international relations.

Former presidential spokesperson, Laolu Akande, has waded in on the lawsuit statement threatened against the United Nations (UN) by Nigeria's Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohaneye.

Akande clarified that the United Nations enjoys immunity from local jurisdiction and thus cannot be sued in a national court.

Nigeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs had earlier in an address at a press conference in Abuja on Monday, October 16, 2023, threatened to sue the United Nations (UN) for allegedly "mismanaging donor funds meant for Nigeria."

Kennedy-Ohaneye boasted that if the global body did not furnish her ministry with the necessary records of account of all the monies it allegedly sourced from donors in Nigeria’s name, on or before November 15, she would take legal action.

“From the 16th of October to November 15, if we don’t get those reports for Nigerians to see, we are heading to court. They have from 16th October to November 8," the minister had stated.

But featuring on Channels TV’s news documentary programme, “State of the Polity” on Tuesday morning, October 17, 2023, Akande, who formerly worked as a Press Officer at the United Nations Headquarters, New York, United States, in 2002 and covered press briefings at the UN, as well as other assignments for the UN's Department of Public Information, said the United Nations cannot be sued on the account of its immunities most especially to local jurisdictions.

He, thereby, suggested that the authorities in government if necessary should start offering an orientation programme or training for newly appointed officers.

"There is also a need for the authority to have some kind of training or brushing the people up. For instance, a minister said yesterday she was going to sue the United Nations (UN)," Akande stated.

"First of all, the UN has immunity against local jurisdictions, it can’t be sued. And if you have a grudge as much as you expressed, why don’t you go to the Foreign Affairs Minister or the Budget and Planning Minister or those ministries that deal with international agencies?" Akande queried.

Similarly, also speaking further on the need for the President to correct chaotic situations affecting his orders and smooth running of government, Akande wondered on whose authority the sacked Postmaster General went back to work at the weekend after a presidential statement had announced his removal, while a successor was named.

He said, "Then you have a situation of the former NIPOST Postmaster-General coming back after a presidential statement that said that there is a new guy and you came back and made NIPOST to say that you have been reinstated. These are the chaotic situations that the President has to fix,” Akande noted.

Calling on the President to infuse the firepower to the civil service, Akande said, “There is quite a bit of chaos going on and the President has to come in and rein in on this in a very firm way. This just has to stop,”

“But thankfully there was a report that the President has waded in and the person announced by the presidential statement has resumed. But there are quite a few chaotic kinds of stuff we have spoken about and I think the President has to give authority to perhaps the Chief-of-Staff or the Secretary to the Government (SGF), somebody needs to be able to rein in very strongly against this chaos,” Akande said.

Mr. Fidet Okhiria, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), is set to undergo disciplinary measures due to alleged mismanagement and operational discrepancies on the popular Abuja-Kaduna train service.

Okhiria and his management team are slated to meet with Transportation Minister Saidu Alkali at the Bukar Dipcharima House in Abuja. The meeting aims to shed light on the activities of the railway, Nigeria’s oldest public corporation.

Transport Minister Alkali revealed the decision to hold Okhiria accountable following his unannounced visit to the Abuja Train Station of the Abuja-Kaduna Train Service (AKTS). This flagship standard gauge service commenced commercial operations in 2017.

Citing ongoing complaints of train delays, safety issues, and passenger dissatisfaction, Minister Alkali emphasized that Okhiria must personally address these concerns and adequately explain his performance to avoid disciplinary actions.

The decision to suspend Prof. Ndifon follows his response to a prior inquiry initiated by the University Management. The Vice-Chancellor, dissatisfied with his response, has made the decision to relieve Prof. Ndifon of his position as Dean and has placed him on suspension.

The letter of his suspension reads: “Please, refer to our letter Ref UC/REG/DISC.45A dated August 14, 2023, on your alleged violation of the provisions of the extant laws and policies of the University and your response to the said letter, which was dated 16th August 2023.

“The Vice-Chancellor has gone through your written representations and is not satisfied with your explanations.

“She has, therefore, directed that you should be relieved of your position as Dean, Faculty of Law, and placed on suspension, while the matter is referred to a panel that will be set-up to investigate these allegations.

“The relief of position as Dean, Faculty of Law and suspension from official duties takes effect from August 17, 2023.

“You are to hand over all University property in your possession including all official responsibilities presently handled by you to the Sub-Dean of the Faculty before vacating office.

“You are to stay away from the University premises except while responding to invitation from the
panel investigating these allegations,” management stated.

Following the students’ protest, more than 15 individuals, who claim to be victims of these alleged acts, have come forward and are prepared to testify against Ndifon in a court.

Customs confiscate illicit drugs on Lagos-Ibadan expressway
The acting Head of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, stated that the agency confiscated 4,252 sacks of imported parboiled rice, 299 cartons of codeine syrup, and 5,600 liters of Premium Motor Spirit, among other items, at various locations in Lagos and Ogun States.

Speaking to reporters at the Federal Operations Unit Zone A in Ikeja on Wednesday, Adeniyi mentioned that these seizures occurred within a two-week period in August.

He disclosed that the illicit drugs were intercepted at the Ijebu Ode junction.

“Last week, officers of the Federal Operating Unit Zone A, acting on credible intelligence, stopped a DAF truck close to Ijebu-Ode Junction. An examination of the truck revealed the concealment of 299 cartons of codeine syrup along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway,” he explained.

He expressed his concern that despite the adverse effects of removing fuel subsidies on the economy, smugglers still make efforts to illegally transport petrol across the border.

He stated, “The following seizures of both items were recorded: a total of 4,252 bags of foreign parboiled rice of 50 kg each at Dangote/Imashayi Ogun State, Saki Axis Oyo State, Owode/Ado Odo in Ogun State, Idiroko/Ohumbe Ogun State, Okoko Mile 2 area in Lagos State and Ado-Ekiti in Ekiti State.

“Similarly, 5,600 litres of Premium Motor Spirit were intercepted and seized when smugglers attempted to takeout these strategic resources through the Oja-Odan area of Ogun State.” he continued.

The head of the NCS added that the smuggling of rice undermines the country’s revenue and jeopardizes its food security.

“Other items seized in the last two weeks include 291 bales of second-hand clothing comprising 57 sacks and four jumbo sacks of used shoes, 486 cartons of foreign frozen poultry products, 190 pieces of rugs, five units of vehicles and 170 pieces of used tyres,” he further stated.

He emphasized that the misuse of codeine syrup, primarily by young individuals, can lead to long-term issues such as anxiety, depression, memory impairment, and harm to the liver, kidneys, and brain.

Additionally, he noted that the confiscation of used tires would help reduce vehicle accidents caused by illegally smuggled used tires.

A former Senator who represented Kaduna Central Senatorial District, Shehu Sani has faulted the ministerial appointments made by President Bola Tinubu especially in the Ministry of Defence.

The President appointed two former governors, Mohammed Badaru, former Jigawa state governor as Minister of Defence; Bello Mattawale, immediate past governor of Zamfara state as Minister of State, Defence.

In a series of tweets on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Sani said while Matawalle should use his position to rid Zamfara of bandits terrorising the state, Badaru shouldn’t have been appointed Minister of Defence.

“In view of the security challenges faced by this country, I thought the Defence Minister should be a retired Military officer with experience and records of accomplishments. That office shouldn’t be just political especially at this time”.

“Matawalle is the Minister of State for Defence and not the ‘Senior’ Minister. His presence there factored Zamfara and its banditry challenges. This is a challenge and an opportunity for him to takeout Turji, Aleru and other terrorist kingpins in his state”.

In a recent press briefing in Benin City, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State clarified the ongoing speculations surrounding the alleged impeachment plot against his deputy, Comrade Philip Shaibu. He firmly stated that there is no such plan to impeach Shaibu and expressed his shock and disappointment over the court action taken by the deputy governor to halt the purported impeachment.

The governor shed light on the situation, suggesting that Shaibu's court action is a preemptive move in anticipation of his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC). According to Obaseki, Shaibu has been actively engaging with senior members of the APC both at the national and state levels, indicating his intention to join the party.

During the visit by the Edo North leaders, Governor Obaseki revealed that the leaders of Edo North Senatorial District, the senatorial zone of the Edo State Deputy Governor, distanced themselves from his governorship ambition. They warned Shaibu against fueling the crisis in the State and expressed their support for Governor Obaseki.

Governor Obaseki emphasized that he was never informed about Shaibu's ambition to seek the governorship position and that the deputy governor has never discussed his plans with him. Obaseki mentioned that he had urged Shaibu to be patient and focus on concluding ongoing projects before discussing succession matters.

The governor expressed concern over the impact of Shaibu's actions on the party and the administration. He highlighted the need for unity within the party and urged party members to consolidate their efforts to ensure the continued dominance of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State.

Governor Obaseki stated: “Let me put it on record that I am not aware of any plot or any scheme to impeach the Deputy Governor Comrade Philip Shaibu. I have also checked and there was no such plan. So, the Court action taken, for me, is a thing of shock and disappointment. I am trying to reflect on the move made by somebody that I have given a broad latitude to do his work as deputy governor. So, for him to take this kind of action is shocking.

“It’s clear what has happened in the last few weeks. It is a preemptive move for him to conclude what he has started. Those of you from Akoko-Edo can recall that when we were discussing the issue of your local government chairman and that of Owan, there was a lot of resistance from you on the candidates he wanted to impose on you. I listened to your entreaties and thought that what you were recommending was fair. How can he be recommending the son of an APC leader in that local government? You resisted and I saw reason and acceded to your request.

“The next day, I saw on social media that he was in Abuja robbing minds with the opposition party. I have heard for months now that he has been in closed consultation with friends from another party because he was not sure that you, the leaders of PDP, will give him the ticket as governor in 2024.”

The governor noted, “I must State here that Philip Shaibu has never had the courtesy to discuss his ambition with me. The last time we spoke of my successor after the House of Assembly election, I did say that we should be patient and that our task is to try and finish well and conclude all our projects we started. It’s only when we do this right that we will have the support of the people for my successor.

“I believe that this action by him is a preemptive move to get a court order, keep his ticket and move to another party. I think it’s unfair for our party. We don’t need this sort of crisis. I have been getting calls all over the world, and it’s rather sad that somebody who is part of an administration will do this to the administration because of his personal ambition.”

He further stated, “I am not angry but naturally I should be disappointed. I understand what is going on. I thank you for your solidarity. We should not be distracted but consolidate and unite our party and bring all on board. As we start our local government campaigns tomorrow, I urge you to join me so that we can build a PDP that will continue to dominate the politics of Edo State as we must finish well so our people will continue to give us the mandate. Edo will continue to be great as our collective efforts will drive our future as no one man can be bigger than all of us.”

Leader of the group and former Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA), Alhaji Kabiru Ajoto said, “We are here to amplify the voice of the majority of the people from the six local government areas in Edo North as we have all taken our position to stand with the Governor of Edo State in the ongoing crisis which is really uncalled for.

“What is happening now is really unfortunate as the people of Edo North have met severally over a week thinking of what to do over the face-off between Governor Obaseki and Shaibu. We sent a powerful delegation to the deputy Governor to make peace with his boss but were surprised that he turned it down. We reached out to him but he turned the offer for peace down.

“Taking the governor to Court is most unfortunate and we can’t keep quiet but to speak out over the development. The Deputy Governor decided not to work closely with Mr. Governor because of personal ambition to become governor of Edo State.”

In a recent revelation, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, shed light on his role in the removal of Maryam Shettima, also known as Maryam Shetty, from President Bola Tinubu's ministerial nomination list. Initially, Maryam Shettima was nominated by Mr Tinubu as a ministerial candidate from Kano State. However, the nomination was later withdrawn, and Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure was named as her replacement.

In an interview on Freedom Radio, Mr Ganduje explained the circumstances that led to the removal of Ms Shettima's name from the ministerial list. According to him, her nomination was made without proper consultation, which resulted in widespread dissatisfaction among the people of Kano State.

Mr Ganduje clarified that during the process of appointing ministers, the president receives recommendations from various advisers representing different states. While the president holds the prerogative to appoint ministers, he is encouraged to seek input from the respective state representatives to identify suitable candidates.

However, in the case of Ms Shettima, there was a lack of consultation, and her name was unexpectedly announced on air without prior discussions. This prompted immediate reactions from the public, especially on social media, where concerns about her competency and suitability for the position were raised.

"The reactions became intense, with people questioning her competency and suitability to represent Kano State. These concerns were not raised by Ganduje, but by the masses," Mr Ganduje stated.

When President Buhari sought Mr Ganduje's opinion on the matter, the APC chairman admitted that he was not familiar with Ms Shettima and couldn't vouch for her competency. In response, the president agreed to a replacement, but he insisted that the nominee must be a woman.

After thorough consultations with stakeholders, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure emerged as the new nominee. Mr Ganduje emphasized that the decision to replace Ms Shettima was based on integrity, competence, and the individual's role in the government formation process.

Mr Ganduje also expressed gratitude for Ms Shettima's past contributions and assured that she would be considered for another appointment in the future.

In a surprising turn of events, President Bola Tinubu withdrew the ministerial nomination of Maryam Shettima, popularly known as Maryam Shetty, on Friday, August 4, 2023.

During the plenary session, the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, made the unexpected announcement, revealing that Tinubu had replaced Shetty with another nominee from the North-West state, Mariya Mahmoud.

Adding to the drama, it was revealed that Shetty had already arrived at the National Assembly for her screening just moments before the announcement was made.

Shetty had been selected by Tinubu from a pool of 19 other nominees in the second batch of ministerial candidates sent to the upper legislative chamber earlier that week.

Interestingly, the replacement nominee, Mariya Mahmoud, isn't a stranger to Shetty. They later attended Bayero University, Kano (BUK), where Shetty pursued Physiotherapy and Mahmoud pursued Medicine and Surgery. They both shared the faculty of Medical Sciences and took some courses together.

Mahmoud is not new to the government scene either. She previously served as a commissioner under former Kano State governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, and is believed to be close to the Ganduje family. Her connection extends to Amina Ganduje, one of the influential daughters of the current All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman.

Amina Ganduje, a Medical Doctor who graduated from the University of Maiduguri, worked with Mahmoud at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH).

In a recent development, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has entrusted Nigeria’s former military head of state, Abdulsalami Abubakar, with the responsibility of leading a delegation to Niger for mediation purposes.

Accompanying him on this important mission is the influential Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Abubakar, whose influence extends both within and outside Nigeria, particularly among the Muslim community. The delegation will also include Alieu Touray, the esteemed president of the ECOWAS Commission.

ECOWAS had previously dispatched the Presidents of Benin and Chad, Patrice Talon and Mahamat Déby, respectively, to Niger in efforts to engage with the coup plotters.

In response to the military ousting of President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26, ECOWAS imposed sanctions on Niger, including a travel ban and blockade, until Bazoum is reinstated. The sub-regional bloc also issued a warning regarding the potential use of force and summoned defense chiefs from the member states.

In a bold statement, political activist, Timi Frank has called for an immediate halt to the ongoing ministerial screening exercise conducted by the Senate.
