In your haste to blow your trumpet and make yourself feel good, you made the usual uninformed generalizations, implied a lot of things my initial post never did or set out to do and missed the robust angle i was coming from.

First, there is a fine line between making a house habitable and you "pimping" your home. It is the landlord's responsibility to do the former otherwise one could die out of building mishaps, and, in some areas (such as the "suburban" [outskirt] areas my post referred to), the speed with which a house will be rented and stay rented will depend on the extra habitable value and comfort (such as wardrobes, cabinets, etc) the landlord has provided. It is wrong for a landlord not to make his house habitable. Most landlords are preying on the significant housing deficit situation in the heart of Lagos, and it is sad that tenants like you are making these kind of lame excuses for them. This was mainly why i moved to the suburbs so i could get more value for my home rental expenditure - bigger spaces with all basic amenities already fitted..

Even within the context of "pimping" a home, there is still a difference. I would prefer to pim.p my home by buying the latest gadgets, appliances, wardrobes, etc, and installing them nicely in my rooms, than doing things like tiling the walls of the house, installing POPs, etc, when the situation (such as water seepage) doesnt necessitate it. You were probably doing the latter, and that is why your landlord is very delighted. If, God forbid, you fall on hard times and you are unable to meet your rental obligation tomorrow, he wont hesitate to throw you out after your grace period and those pimpings you made will be the primary reason the next tenant will come in, at a minimum extra 150 - 200k compared to what you were paying. Infact, i know of cases where over-pimping a rental apartment backfired as the landlord picked up unnecessary quarrels with the tenant, evicted him and brought in someone else who paid higher because of the extra value on the house. Such is life.

Also, upon exiting, whatever someone decides to do with installations and fittings s/he made in an apartment s/he rented is entirely up to the person. It is wrong for you to lord your opinion over people whose financial situation or next home destination you know nothing about. You should be clamouring for landlords reimbursing exiting tenants for installations and fittings those tenants have made to the house which has increased its value. As a landlord with the fear of God, that is something i will happily do, as encouragement for the tenant to do same in his next rented home.

Finally, i urge you desist from the mentality that every tenant is NOT a landlord with properties to his name. It is an archaic and sadistic mindset most landlords have that make them treat their tenants with utter disdain - as if tenants are bereft of options. Understand that some landlords do not like to stay in their own houses to avoid emotional attachments that could prevent them from moving around for personal or work reasons
