EducationRe: Nairalanders! Pls I Need Encouragement by Holysuck(op): 9:51am On Apr 01, 2020
Africaman:
Hello,

i) First of all, you may be able to find work as a journalist with Yoruba langauge newspapers and magazine publishers like "Alaroye" weekly newspaper and "Alaroye" monthly magazine, published by World Information Agents. There is also "Iroyin Owuro" newspaper.
Try and contact them and see if they will allow you to do some Industrial Attachment with them during your vacations. You might consider being a reporter or column writer e.t.c. Just to find out how the Yoruba newspaper industry works.

ii) You could become a professional translator, doing Yoruba translations for organisations, companies or even the governmental agencies.

iii) You might also be able to find work doing "voice over" for advertisments and announcements.

iv) You could try subtitling Yollywood films into English language. You would need training in subtitling technology.

v) Also try Script writing for Yollywood films.

vi) Consider being a Yoruba language radio presenter/commentator, whether doing political analyses or sports, or be a generalist. I haven't seen any Yoruba language boxing commentators/analysts, so you could be a pioneer in that. You could try motor sport, basketball, golf, e.t.c. There are many Yoruba language radio stations all over the Yoruba states(Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti, 12 lgas of Kwara and 6 lgas in Kogi).

vii) You could also consider doing the above for the televison industry.

viii) You could try being a Yoruba Studies teacher in a primary/secondary school or a Yoruba Studies lecturer in a College of Education/Polytechnic/University. There are many people around the world who would like to learn the language, so you might be able to offer online Yoruba lessons.

ix) You could become a diplomat, working as a cultural attache in a Nigerian embasssy abroad. A few years ago, the Nigerian embassy in Benin Republic gave the Beninese some Yoruba books to help them teach the Benin Republic Yoruba. The Yorubas are roughly 18% of the Benin Republic population and can be found mainly in the eastern and central parts of the country. You would also have to speak French to work in Benin Republic I think.

The same happened with the Nigerian Embassy in Brazil, where there descendants of Yoruba slaves in Bahia state, northeast Brazil. The Nigerian embassy supplied some Yoruba teachers to help teach the Yoruba descendants of slavery. I believe you would also need to speak Brazilian Portuguese to work there.

As you can see from my brief write-up, you have quite a few options with the Yoruba language as a Career path, so forget about those who underate and ridicule your course.

Be encouraged, it is a worthwhile course to study.

All the best
Thank you very much sir, u really made my day. God will give ear to ur heart desires ijn. Am really grateful sir
