Nairaland GeneralNew Chip Raises Hope Of Blindness Reversal by homicsblinks(op): 7:31pm On Oct 28, 2016
In the effort to check rising vision impairment worldwide, scientists have produced a new prosthetic device that is designed to restore lost vision.

This is contained in a study published in ‘PLOS Biology’. The prosthetic device senses signals and transmits them to the brain by stimulating the cells in the retina – the area at the back of the eye that collects light focused from the lens.

The ‘bionic eye’ senses visual signals and transmits them to the brain, but requires extensive training to help patients’ brains learn to see again. Around the world, an estimated 40 million people are blind, with many of them reaching this condition after years of slow and progressive degeneration. The new study comes from researchers at an Italian public research university, the University of Pisa, who wanted to test the brain’s capacity to process artificial visual inputs.

They focused on seven patients with Retinitis Pigmentosa – an inherited disease that gradually leads to complete blindness. Retinitis pigmentosa is the name given to a group of inherited conditions of the retina that lead to a gradual progressive reduction in vision. With the development of this condition, difficulties with night vision and peripheral vision are the first things that are noticed. Later, reading vision, colour vision, and central vision are affected.

The age at which symptoms start is variable and the rate of deterioration often varies – for example with the different genetic types – but is generally very slow with changes occurring over years rather than months. In approximately half of all cases, there are other family members affected. The researchers then used functional magnetic imaging – technology that measures brain activity by detecting changes associated with blood flow.

This showed that patients learned to recognise unusual visual stimuli, such as bright flashes, and this ability led to increased brain activity. As the patient practiced seeing, the more their brain responded to visual stimuli using the prosthetic implant. The researchers, led by Maria Concetta Morrone, said: “The boost in response takes a long time and intensive training to appear, being stronger in those subjects who used the prosthetic device more intensely and for a longer time.”

The results suggest that after the device is implanted, the brain undergoes plastic changes to re-learn how to process the visual signals. The fact that after years of blindness, the brain still has some plasticity is highly promising for the further development of new prosthetic implants.

PoliticsYoruba Elders Accuse Buhari Of Marginalizing The South And Favoring The North by homicsblinks(op): 8:03pm On Jun 08, 2016
Yoruba elders accuse President Buhari of marginalizing the South and favoring the North in his political appointments

Yoruba elders under the aegis of the Yoruba Unity Forum (YUF) have accused President Buhari of favoring the North and Marginalizing the South in his political appointments. Addressing newsmen in Ibadan yesterday after their meeting, spokesperson of the group, Rt. Rev. Emmanuel Bolanle Gbonigi, said they have assessed the Buhari-led administration and concluded that he has not been fair to the south. "A glance at the table showing key appointments made so far underscores the extent of the marginalisation of the south. The summary of appointment shows that the North West which is the president’s zone has 26 positions or 44 percent of all appointments he made so far, North East has nine positions or 15 percent, North Central has six positions or 10 percent, South West has seven positions or 11. 8 percent, South South has eight positions or 13.56 percent and the South East three positions or five percent. This brings the total for the North to 41 positions or 69.5 percent while the South is left with 18 positions or 30.5 percent. The last 365 days have indeed been momentous for Nigeria. While the president has made significant progress towards routing out the Boko Haram insurgents and restoring peace in the North East, centres of various other insurgencies have sprouted in other parts of the country, like the South South and the South East, not to mention the new terror posed by the rampaging Fulani herdsmen. These sectional insurgencies are bound to continue to arise from time to time with our present over- centralised, quasi-unitary structure of governance. This is why well-meaning, respectable Nigerians have agitated for decades and continue to agitate for a restructuring of the country to achieve true fiscal and political federalism and to enable each section to mobilise and develop its own resources. The president’s recent remarks therefore that he will consign the recommendations of the 2014 National Conference to the archives, and the present posture of his party against restructuring show that they are out of step with progressive thinking in the country”he said Other members of the group include Archbishop Ayo Ladigbolu, Senator Femi Okurounmu, Prof. Tunde Adeniran, former Lagos State Deputy Governor, Kofoworola Bucknor Akerele , Bisi Sangodoyin, Bolajoko Doherty and Chief Emmanuel Adelana.
