Travel4 Local Soups To Try Out When Next You Are In Benin City by hotelsng(op): 4:21pm On Oct 29, 2015
Here we are in Edo State, and what are the best soups we can eat? The local cuisines are some of the best the country can ever offer its guests. There are a lot of indigenous foods that have their variations according to the place and culture of the people of the Edo. These meals that we have selected are only found well prepared in this state.

Bini Owo Soup

Bini Owo Soup was named after a town called, Owo. This soup has become one of the oldest foods that are eaten in Edo State. We have a lot of soups in Nigeria that are prepared with vegetables like fluted pumpkin or spinach but unlike Owo Soup, that is prepared with potash. Potash is something that we rarely find in Nigerian soups. You may end up calling it stew especially when you eat the one that is served with yam or unripe plantain rather than pounded yam or eba.

Black Soup (Omoebe)

People say that Omoebe is the most popular food in the state. The colour of the soup is black which is where the name of the soup comes from. It is a tasty and delicious soup that is prepared with spices and local herbs. The vegetable that is used are scent leaf and bitter leaf which produce the black colours when they are grounded. You can order for this soup in different parts of the state.

Omi Ukpoka (Corn soup)

The corn soup that is popularly called Omi Ukpoka that is common among the Afemai people. It is made with dry corn that is grounded, different herbs like African nutmeg, uziza and uda and smoked fish. The aroma is unique and inviting. If you are on diet, you should not think of tasting Omi Ukpoka because it is high in carbohydrate content.

Omisagwe (groundnut soup)

There is another part of the country where you can find a soup like Omisagwe, the northern part of the country where they serve Miyan Taushe and there is also an Asian sauce called Satay Sauce that tastes like this soup too.It is made with onion and tomato as the base, groundnuts and you can add beef, chicken or fish to it.
TravelMy Strange Experience In A Hotel At Warri by hotelsng(op): 1:58pm On Oct 22, 2015
Well I was actually travelling from warri ‎to lagos late at night and the vehicle I entered got bad on the road at ore and we could make it to lagos that night. So we had to look for where to stay for the night. Due to the urgency, didn’t have time To look for a good hotel, just got one of these bed and breakfast type of lodge (but this one was just a bed without a breakfast.. lol)

It was cheap, all I needed was just a place to spend the night. I entered the room and closed the door, took my bath and laid down to rest. This was around to 12 midnight. There was no light. Not more than 30 minutes of entering the room after taking my bath, I noticed my door open and all of a sudden an old woman walked into the room, I was terrified, the old woman smiled and said “my son I come greet you, I hear say una bus spoil say una come sleep for here, so I talk say make I come greet una say una come stay for our place”

I was terrified, I said thank you and she walked out and told me goodnight, I said in my mind goodnight ke!!! For this kind condition only God know what next would walk through that door.

I had to stay awake through out the whole night just to be safe.

Now this is why we love Northern Nigeria or rather, this is why you need to spend your next vacation in the North. This might sound unbelievable but a single room at this hotel in Gombe cost N3,000 and a suite that comes with amenities like a Jacuzzi, a flat TV screen, a living area and refrigerator costs only N4,500. Imagine if this sort of deal was in Lagos or some other big city.

TravelBored In Jos? Here Are Places To Visit by hotelsng(op): 8:11pm On Oct 06, 2015
Jos is a quiet city in Plateau State. In Nigeria’s infancy, it was an important tin mining location when the colonial masters were still ruling the country. The natives refer to Jos as ‘J-Town.’ If you live in another part of the country and you come to Jos, you will find the temperate weather strange. When it comes to tourism, anyone would love this city because it’s vibrant with loads of activities.

Urbanization meets with tourism in this city – one of the reasons thousands of people are drawn to it. You can find the West African Klispringer, Jos Plateau indigo bird, the rock firefinch, Nigerian mole rat, Fox’s shaggy rat, and other animals.

The Jos Museum

Jos Museum is one of the city’s favourite places. It houses several archeological artifacts, historical relics, and many other things that you would appreciate. There is a wooden stream close to this museum, and you would find this museum was built under the foot of a tree. You would also find the museum acts as a centre to preserve the Nok culture.

Jos Zoo

Kids would love it here where they can see several wildlife animals, including lions. This is one place you can find crowds of visitors, especially during the festive periods. The zoo is very close to the Jos Museum and the Museum of Traditional Nigerian Architecture. Besides the zoo, there’s also the Jos Wildlife Park – a lovely picnic spot. Here, you will find a lot of animals and birds.

The Kurra Falls

Surrounded by lakes, Jos has its own waterfall called the Kurra Falls. These lakes came into existence from the tin mining activities so many years ago before the government stopped it. This is the where the Nigerian Electricity Supply Company (NESCO) generates electricity.

Classic Hotels

You would love the numerous hotels scattered around Jos. These hotels have become home to visitors who are looking for great places to rest and relax.

The Local Markets

There are a lots of markets in Jos where you can easily buy or sell in the state. There is room for everyone coming in to make business transactions. You can buy beads, local clothes, pots and lots more in most of the markets in the city.

Food$75 Million Dollars? See The World Most Expensive Cake (photos) by hotelsng(op): 1:57pm On Sep 09, 2015
No birthday party is complete without a spectacular cake as the centrepiece.
And one wealthy Arab family have paid a staggering $75million for the world's most expensive cake, which features real diamonds.
The cake was created by Debbie Wingham, 33, who has turned to baking after previously making the world's most expensive dress for £11.5million made from black and red diamonds.
The cake was then presented to the client's daughter at her joint birthday and engagment party.
The six-foot long creation, in the style of a catwalk, features garments, which resemble Ms Wingham's couture clothing.
Every piece of the cake, which took over 1,100 hours to make, was hand sculpted by Ms Wingham.
It has over 120kg of fondant icing and 60kg of modelling chocolate which is predominately used for sculpting along with 80 different airbrushed colours and effects.
The cake weighs a staggering 450kg - the equivalent weight of a male grizzly bear and the icing includes a 5.2 carat pink diamond, a 6.4 carat yellow diamond and a total of 15 individual five carat white diamonds.
The runway is encapsulated and adorned with 400 one carat and 73 three carat white diamonds and 75 three carat black diamonds.

Travel21 Great Websites Every Smart Traveller In Nigeria Are Familiar With by hotelsng(op): 10:07am On Sep 09, 2015
There are days when even your own email inbox feels like the spawn of Satan, what with the tons of email subscriptions pouring in (and you asking ‘oh God when did I subscribe to THIS MANY emails?’), mixing the important stuff with the downright inane, and very quickly you find yourself spending way too much time on unimportant stuff while the stuff that needs to be done is left piling up.

So we asked Nigerian professionals about their favourite go-to applications and websites for when they want to boost their productivity. Below is a curated list:

Nairaland.com/travel
Join fellow travellers to exchange travel information, advice, hints and tips. Since 2005, members of this forum have been sharing trusted advice to help you get to the heart of a destination. Nairaland's travel forum is by travellers, for travellers, and covers every random topic on the planet including 'how to behave as a first timer on an Aeroplane".

Followup.cc
I have been using FollowUp.cc for a few weeks now, and it is one of my best email add-ons, to be honest. FollowUp.cc helps you schedule your messages (for when you don’t want to reply that person now, but later in the day), track messages (now you know when they open your emails; goodbye ‘I didn’t get your email’ excuses forever!) and reminds you about emails that need to be treated, even if you forgot.

Pretty great, eh?

Unroll.me
I also started using Unroll.me quite recently (you can tell by now that I’ve been having an exasperating email situation for a while now), and it’s the perfect way to sort through your junk, quite literally. You remember those random newsletters you signed up for but now regret? The ones you complain about daily but can’t find the time – or willpower – to sort through your emails, unsubscribing click by click? Unroll.me will do it for you, easy! I unsubscribed from 114 email lists in a few quick seconds and put the rest of the newsletters I actually wanted in ONE composite roll-up, courtesy unroll.me. You should try it.

Uber
Ah, Uber. This is a pretty neat app for when you want to dart in and out around Lagos. One click on the app, and you can summon the nearest driver and even track his journey as he comes to pick you up in style. If you constantly have meetings to attend, you can already see why this is a great app.

Trello
Trello is great for organizing, managing and keeping track of your projects. You can manage your teams here, share progress shots of tasks and keep everything in line in this composite tool that became popular for Toyota’s using it in the 80’s for Supply Chain Management.

Todoist/Wunderlist
There is an ongoing debate online about which is better: Todoist, or Wunderlist? Whatever the outcome, these are useful tasks for managing your assignments and tasks in a coherent manner. You can set reminders for yourself and check off completed tasks.

Pocket
If you are like me, every day you come across several interesting articles you’d love to read there and then, but deadlines aren’t waiting for you so you have to (sadly) continue with your workflow. With Pocket, you can store the things you need to read – and read them later in the day, when you are more relaxed. Also – you wouldn’t even need to be connected to the internet to read later. Yay.

TV Show Time
Even you, busy professional, deserve to have a little fun sometimes. It’s hard enough keeping track of schedules and deadlines at work so it’s easy to understand why you may no longer be following your favourite TV shows as religiously as you used to. This is where TV Show Time comes in: let this nifty tool manage your TV show calendar and send you reminders whenever a new episode is out. Score!

QuickTeller
I could type ‘you never have to go to a bank, ever again’ and that would be pretty accurate. Manage everything – from paying PHCN and DSTV bills to buying airtime and mobile data – on your mobile phone once you download QuickTeller.

HelloFood
Sometimes you are hungry but too busy to go get the food. Make the food come to you with HelloFood.

MallForAfrica
With this one app, you can buy items from various shops in the US and UK and have it shipped directly to you in Africa. Brilliant.

Konga/Jumia
Cut down on time spent shopping by having everything ordered online and delivered to you. Use either Konga or Jumia for your within-Nigeria shopping needs.

CamScanner
If you are like me, you often have to send a scanned document to someone. This is all fine and dandy, but sometimes you are nowhere near a scanner and need to send the documents immediately. This is where CamScanner comes in: it converts your phone into a scanner and sends crisp ‘scanned’ images quickly.

Vconnect
What are you looking for? Local businesses, movies, restaurants? Vconnect boasts of a directory that will show you a robust list of all things Nigerian.

TreeHouse/Lynda
Are you a professional looking for great courses to improve your skill level? Try TreeHouse and Lynda.com for courses on programming, web design/development, and so on.

RebTel
You would probably like this one: RebTel allows you to make cheap international phone calls and send affordable SMSes as well.

Slack
A nifty team chat and collaboration application, Slack has taken the world by a storm, and Nigeria isn’t left behind. It comes in free and premium packages, and for most people the free service is more than enough.

DouJustu.com
If you love movies, games and anime, then you will love DouJutsu. What? I did say even the busiest professionals have to have a little fun on the side smiley

Zikoko.com
Sometimes it feels like you are missing out on trending discussions and memes while the clock ticks tediously at the office. Don’t you worry: Zikoko will capture the best social media moments and create easy-to-read posts for you to catch up on the entertainment!

EverNote
With EverNote, you can jot notes during business meetings and performance reviews, and have it synced across all your devices and online too!

hotels.ng
How else do we end this awesome list without mentioning US? Do you often have to travel, and need accommodation/hotel rooms? You can cut down significantly on the cost and time spent hunting for places to stay by using http://www.hotels.ng. The platform has a list of nearly all hotels in Nigeria, provides discounts and customer support to give its users cheaper and more convenient hotel bookings, leaving you free to do other things, like get a higher score on Candy Crush and ask Don Jazzy for a Twitter follow back.

Are there any apps and websites that make your working experience in Nigeria worthwhile? Let us know in the comment box!

Travel5 Exciting Places To Visit In Warri by hotelsng(op): 1:15pm On Aug 28, 2015
Warri is one of Nigeria’s oldest riverine towns. It is situated on the banks of the Lower Niger, Delta State. This little fishing-city is a must visit location in Nigeria. The town is located roughly halfway between Lagos and Port Harcourt. People from Warri are referred to as Wafarians. People usually come here for business since most oil companies in Nigeria are located here. But who says Warri has nothing to offer apart from its oil? This thriving metropolis has exciting attractions on its doorstep including sights and tourist spots to keep travellers entertained.

That being said, Warri has its virtues, so if you find yourself with 24 hours in the city, you’ll have no shortage of things to do.

Palace of the Olu of Warri

This palace is located in the city centre and it is home of Olu of Warri, who ascended the great throne of Warri Kingdom. It is an old palace with interesting African architecture for lovers of arts. Only part of the palace is opened for the public since it is actually a private house. The furniture and interior are European style and there are several collections from all over the world.

Nana’s Palace, Koko

This is a history museum that shows how life in Warri was before civilisation. Chief Nana Olomu of Ebrohim has built this museum. Nana was a powerful entrepreneur who lived in 19th century. This magnificent building was built by influence of British Empire under Queen Victoria. It is located outside Warri in the district of Koko. Tourists can access this place by taxis.

Red Mangrove Swamp

Do yourself a favour and get down to the Creek. For a real experience, take one of the wooden local boats. The Red Mangrove Swamp is located near the Abraka Gold Course and you can see the golf course from the edge of the swamp. This swamp is also an interesting place to see and explore. Tourists are reminded to go with a guide.

Effurun Garden Park

This is certainly something for the children to enjoy. It is located just next to the Olu of Warri Palace and it is always full of people. It is favourite place of locals for relaxing on hot summer days and for having picnics and spending time with their families. One thing that makes this park special is, tourists can find a lot of rare species of trees, palm, birds and a large number of hotels.

Warri Kingdom Royal Cemetery

One of the most exceptional places to visit in Warri, The royal cemetery is the resting place of all the kings that have ever reigned in Warri. On the trail to the various locations following a single footpath, one would expect to find tomb stones and other usual markings or landmarks to identify the various resting places, but this is not so. Like any other forest, the usual lush vegetation with trees and plants of various kinds, coupled with the serene environment and the chirping of birds that breaks the silence to welcome tourists to this place of grandeur is the characteristics of this cemetery. What makes it awesome is an iroko tree is usually planted as soon as a king is buried which makes some of them over 400 years old.

Naturally, one would wander around the forest without it leaving significant impression, but being guided by a tour guide, to specific locations makes a tour around this much revered site a memorable one.

TravelImportant Tips For Securing An American Visa As A Nigerian Applicant by hotelsng(op): 4:20pm On Jul 30, 2015
Whether your application gets accepted or rejected, consular officers would really like to see that applicants are honest, stay for the authorized duration and come back promptly after that. Even though the U.S. is a country of immigrants, it does not mean that anyone can enter the country for any reason. The visa interview has personal and consequently unpredictable factors involved in whether your visa application gets accepted or rejected.
Nervous already? Here are helpful tips when going for an interview at the American Embassy in Lagos.

1. Arrive early. You don’t want to miss your interview just because you got stuck in traffic. If you are coming in from cities outside Lagos, ensure you book a hotel near Lagos American Embassy prior to the date. If you reside in Lagos but far from the island, its best you spend the night before your interview at a hotel in Victoria Island. HotelsNG (http://www.hotels.ng), has a wide range of affordable hotels near the embassy.

2. Dress formally. Your appearance should convey who you are. If you are a student, you should look like a student. If you are an executive, you should look like an executive.

3. Don’t show signs of nervousness such as flickering of eyes, trembling of fingers as that could go against you. Mind your manners and refrain from unnecessary body movement.

4. Often times you might not understand what the interviewing officer is saying because of his/her American accent. If that happens, don’t feel embarrassed. Calmly and confidently say, sorry sir/ madam. I did not understand you. Could you kindly repeat what you said?

5. Be confident in your answers and avoid giving unnecessary information. Always reply with correct answers. All data while applying for the visa and details of the answers given in your interview are computerised and maintained.

6. Be polite, do not argue and do not ask unnecessary or unrelated questions. Do not unnecessarily elaborate your responses as this may not work in your favour.

If You Get the Visa:
Immediately go through all the information on the visa stamp very carefully. Make sure there are no typographical errors in your name, passport, number, date of birth, etc. written on the visa stamp. If there are any such errors, contact the visa application centre to get it corrected. Even a small error is not tolerable as it can cause trouble later on, and should be corrected as soon as possible.

If You Don’t Get the Visa:
1. That’s not the end of the world! It doesn’t change anything in life. Things continue to be as excellent as they were before.
2. You did our best. The rejection was solely due to a whim of the interviewing officer.
3. You can always apply a second time. Something to think about. Remain positive.
TravelWhat Item Is Okay To 'steal' From A Hotel Room? by hotelsng(op): 2:13pm On Jul 28, 2015
Most hotels want you to be very comfortable so they fill their guest rooms with nice things. They’re so attractive and you might be tempted to take them home with you. But before you start stuffing your suitcase with goodies, take a minute to learn what’s okay and what’s off- limits to take from your hotel room.

In most hotels, guests often take towels and bathroom toiletries, irons, hairdryers, cable boxes, clock radios, blankets, paintings, ashtrays, TV remote controls, pillows and the Bible.

So what can you take from a hotel room without being considered a bad guest? Basically, it is advisable to limit your pillaging to the bathroom.

Shampoo, gels, conditioner, body lotion, and other bathroom amenities are fair game, since they can’t be reused for the next guest.
Bathroom slippers are usually complimentary as well, since they can’t be used again.
Stationary like logo pens, notepaper are more like souvenirs and are also left for your use.

Apart from the items listed above, Everything else are considered property of the hotel and should be left in the hotel room when you leave irrespective of how high your hotel room rates are.

If you enjoy something enough to want to take it home with them, you are welcome to do so, but at a charge. Some hotels give guests the options to purchase the items that they are fond of.
If you take something from your hotel room, expect an extra charge on your bill. Robes are such a popular item for guests to take that many hotels now list the charge right on the hanger.

In fact, many hotels have onsite shops, where you can purchase everything from those 700-thread- count sheets and plush towels, to the lamps, showerheads and even the hotel’s bed itself, all brand-new, and you don’t even have to worry about fitting it in your suitcase.
