Gbagyi Dress Culture!!

Many people use to ask me, Mary are you Yoruba, are you from Benue, some will even say if you are from Ghana.

Chai, other will ask are you Hausa? Because they hear me speaking Hausa language!

Hmmmm....
Ok...going through all this question got me thinking.

I am a gbagyi princess�. Yes ooo and not from all mention above at all.

And I feel like sharing about our cultural attire.
Oya...for the sake of my friends that know little about it, let's start by saying......

The Gbagyi people are known for their unique attire which differentiates them from others. This attire has been a symbol of identification for the Gbagyi race. It is popularly known as 'Ajesuda'. It's a tie and dye cloth made from local cotton and traditional woven and dyed.

In this mode of dressing, the ladies tie wrappers above their breasts without blouses. On the other hand, the men wear what is called 'Abache'.

This piece of clothing looks like underwear except that it crosses in-between the gonads, exposing each part of the buttocks. The men literally have their butts out.

Now, with civilization and globalization, it has become rare to see the ladies with just their coverings. They now prefer to wear a white blouse on the wrapper, while the men prefer to sew the Ajesuda to wear on a trouser.
However, on festivals, most of the participants prefer to return to the traditional mode of dressing.

We’re accustomed to washing our clothes whenever the hamper is full and we find ourselves with nothing to wear. We may wipe down the kitchen counter after washing the dishes that we’ll need to use again tomorrow. Most of us will run a duster over the surfaces in our home when visible dust starts to show up.

Now, I understand that for a lot of people, modest fashion is not their thing but it is definitely something that can be done with so much class too.

But it's quite refreshing to see more women embracing modest fashion and daily breaking the stereotype that covering up is boring. It's even more amazing to see more people come to the realization that it is, in fact, possible to dress modestly and still be fashionable and stylish.

In today's post I'll be sharing simple tips that I use to look fully covered but still fly.

1. Prints
I love playing around with prints, be it polka-dots, stripes, ankara or even retro prints, they are a great way to stand out. Think of how much more fashionable one would be when a combination of prints are paired together!
And we all know polka-dot prints, animal prints like leopard print are trending now so this is the perfect time to try this out.

2. Colours
Incorporating colours be in it with colour blocking or adding pops of colour in one's outfit is another tip. Nothing makes more of a fashion statement like colours, I mean!

3. Statement accessories
Things like belts, scarfs and shoes bring a look together and can take it from grandma-vibes to super stylish and fashion forward. For example, when styling the maxi skirt,I opted for strappy sandals to make the outfit more modern and stylish.

4. Playing with Lengths and fits
Once you can get the right fit in your clothes you're good to go. Also don't be scared of layering pieces. For example, wearing a shirt underneath a dress or a skirt underneath a skirt. Just be sure to have fun and play with different textures and fits. Think pleats and ruffles.

5. Details
At the end of the day, those little details and components in an outfit make all the difference. That little button on a skirt, the flare of sleeves, or even a ruffle detail, can instantly make one look more stylish.

Bonus tips, trousers are my favorite way to look stylish but still fully covered up. Also, tops and dresses with a higher neckline have such an understated elegance which is why I always wear most of my pieces backward.

Adire is a resist-dyed cloth produced and worn by the Yoruba people of southwestern Nigeria in West Africa. The Yoruba label adire, which means "tied and dyed,".


The History of Adire.

As a distinctive textile type, adire first emerged in the city of Abeokuta, a center for cotton production, weaving, and indigo-dyeing in the nineteenth century. The prototype was tie-dyed kijipa, a handwoven cloth dyed with indigo for use as wrappers and covering cloths. Female specialists dyed yarns and cloth and also refurbished faded clothing by re-dyeing the cloth with tie-dyed patterns. When British trading firms introduced cheap imported cloth and flooded the market with colorful inexpensive printed textiles, the adire industry emerged to meet the challenge. The women discovered that the imported white cotton shirting was cheaper than handwoven cloth and could be decorated and dyed to meet local tastes. The soft, smooth texture of the import cloth, in contrast to the rough surface of kijipa cloth, provided a new impetus for decoration. The soft shirting encouraged the decorators to create smaller more precise patterns with tie-dye methods and to use raffia thread to produce finely patterned stitch-resist adire alabere. The smooth surface of shirting led to the development of hand-painted starch-resist adire eleko. Abeokuta remained the major producer and trade center for adire.
