[[Fancy Design Is Killing Your Site Revenue]]

My first paid blog is on relationships - what a fun subject. I remember designing it using Artiseer - I wanted it to be the most beautiful blog there is. I spent days designing and re-designing the fonts and banners then spent the next 18 months updating it with a newer and sexier one each month.

And all the while NEVER making a dime off it. The truth is: nobody gives a flying damn about how fancy your website looks. Infact it's been proved that the more fancy it looked, the more distracting it becomes. Preventing it from doing what it's there to do: Make You Money!

Doubt it?

Think of the most porpular/successful websites you know: facebook, twitter, nairaland. How make scrolling text, flying banner, colored background, etc do you ever seen on them. None right?

In fact if you look closely enough it will be like they intentionally make it 'not fancy' or even 'ugly'. Tell me; is Nairaland the most beautiful website you've ever seen? Nope!!! But why don't you call the owner and ask him how much he makes a week.

I like the saying "follow what I do NOT what I say". Enough said.

Yeah, this one really pisses me off. Why don't you just put my balls inside a drawer and close it. Too vivid?
But seriousely, everyday I see upto 100 'articles' from 13 old boys who just discovered BLOGING -- and they're pumping advice left and right to anyone who will listen.

Once or twice a day no matter how busy I am I always seem to find myself on Nairaland.com scrolling through the posts and comment section.

And it always makes me laugh whenever I come across people spewing hate that some silly post with no teeth just made 'frontpage' while his own post on essential topic never get 'viewed' by more than 10 people.

They don't get it. And probably never will. It is right in your face the whole time. Nobody wants to read about "50 things we can do to improve Nigeria economy and better ourselves".

Its serious and worse it's BORING. And nobody wants that. They'd rather be reading about the latest celebs scandals, celebs & funny pictures, and fun topics.

Moving on...

Find that story/post that glues your readers to their seat. Follow Forums like Nairaland and others, see the posts and stories they allow on the FRONT-PAGE and that will give you a clue. That's the un-disclose secret to having a royal and almost obsesive readership. Get it?

Once you find that 'Attention-Grabing-Topic' Publish it and start PROMOTING the hell out of it.

With the exception of "News Blogs" you don't have to Post everyday. Actually, I recommend you avoid it. Re-alocate that time to Promotion.

People won't find your site because you post fresh articles everyday. But they might if you do a "Guest Post" on a popular blog, If you post it in ANY relevant "facebook group" you can get your hands on, etc. Time to get creative.

Obviously there are more but I'm going to stop here today. I might decide to publish more tomorrow if this one is well received. Any question? I'm here for you...
