Monaco have won the Ligue 1 title for the first time in 17 years after winning 2-0 at home against Saint-Etienne. Needing a point to be crowned French champions for the eighth time, the in-form Kylian Mbappe scored the opener in style. Mbappe, 18, latched on to captain Radamel Falcao’s through ball, skipped around the goalkeeper and slotted in. Forward Valere Germain made sure of the win in injury time with a tap-in from close range. The home side had all but secured the title before kick-off, with Paris St-Germain three points behind with just one game to play and a far inferior goal difference. The new champions rarely looked troubled in registering their 11th consecutive league win and subsequently lifting a trophy that has eluded them since the turn of the millennium. The last time Monaco won Ligue 1 they were fielding a team which included the French trio of Fabien Barthez, David Trezeguet and Willy Sagnol. Monaco’s success this season is largely down to the reinvigorated Colombian Falcao and the emergence of French teenager Mbappe. Falcao, 31, has put the disappointment of his loan spells with Manchester United and Chelsea , where he scored just five goals in 36 appearances, behind him. The forward will finish top scorer for Monaco this campaign, netting 24 times with four assists. Mbappe has caught the eye of suitors from the top teams in Europe in his breakthrough season. He has scored 15 league goals this season to add to his remarkable performances in the Champions League. Mbappe, voted Ligue 1’s young player of the year, scored six in six as Monaco reached the semi-final stage, eventually losing to Juventus over two legs. That defeat did not overshadow their achievements, as Monaco defeated Tottenham Hotspur ,Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund en route to the semi-finals.http://fulsports.com/2017/05/monaco-win-ligue/ |
Spanish giants Barcelona are said to be interested in signing Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso this summer. According to reports, the Catalan giants consider the Spaniard as an ideal addition alongside Jordi Alba. Alba is more of a wing back and Barcelona are on the lookout for someone like Eric Abidal. The report adds that Alonso’s performances under Conte have impressed Barcelona. Chelsea signed Marcos Alonso from Fiorentina last summer and he has been a regular member of Conte’s starting lineup. There is no reason why Chelsea would consider selling him at the end of this season. Furthermore, the report also adds that Alonso is happy at Stamford Bridge right now. However, the only advantage Barcelona have is the prospect of improving Alonso’s international chances. The player feels that he can break into the Spain first team if he plays for a top La Liga side. Alonso dreams of playing for Spain and he thinks that playing for Barcelona would help his cause. Alonso was a part of Real Madrid’s youth team and therefore signing for Barcelona’s first team should not be too much of an issue for the Chelsea player. Eventually, it will come down to Chelsea and the Spanish giants will need to come up with an offer the Blues cannot refuse.http://fulsports.com/2017/05/barca-want-alonso/ |
Arsenal are set to complete the signing of Schalke left back Sead Kolasinac in a few weeks. The Bosnian is out of contract at the end of June and he will sign for the Gunners on the 1st of July according to ESPN. 23-year-old Kolosinac has been one of the best left backs in Bundesliga this season and is expected to be the long-term replacement for Nacho Monreal. The likes of AC Milan and Everton were interested in the player as well but his decision to join the Gunners is not surprising at all. Despite the fact that Arsenal could miss out on the Champions League, they are still a big club with a very good manager. Kolasinac can operate as a centre-back when used in a three defender formation. His versatility will certainly give Wenger some much-needed options. The Frenchman has been using a three defender formation for the last few weeks. The Schalke defender has scored 3 goals in 30 appearances for the Bundesliga outfit this season. fulsports.com/2017/05/arsenal-to-sign-kolasinac/ |
Spaniard Rafael Nadal beat Austria’s world number seven Dominic Thiem 7-6 (10- 6-4 to win his fifth Madrid Open title and move into the world’s top four. The Spaniard has now won three straight titles this year, after his Barcelona Open and Monte Carlo Masters victories, while his record on clay this year is 15-0. Nadal edged the Austrian in the tie-break of a tense first set that lasted one hour and 18 minutes. He broke world number seven Thiem early in the second set to set up the win. Nadal will be confirmed as the new world number four, replacing 18-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer, when the latest rankings come out on Monday. That will improve his seeding in time for the French Open, which starts on 22 May and where Nadal is a nine-time champion. Nadal, who beat defending champion Novak Djokovic in the semi-final, has now won his 30th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title, tying the all-time record with Serbia’s Djokovic. The former world number one was last ranked inside the world’s top four in October 2016 and struggled with a wrist injury last year, which forced him to pull out of the French Open and Wimbledon and end his season early. Nadal told Television Espanola: “The truth is I was up against an opponent who, in the next five to 10 years, will be fighting for the most important titles, so I’m very happy to have won. “It was a very exciting game. “It was a very important final for both of us, for him as it was the first in the Masters 1000, and for me it’s always special to play here in Madrid, in this unique tournament. “You never know when it might be the last, so I always try to enjoy it.”http://fulsports.com/2017/05/nadal-wins-madrid-open/ |
