Best African Safari Destinations: I’ve always loved nature. Urbanization has been trying to take this away but I’m truly glad that humanity has taken steps to preserve her. SportsTop 7 African Traditional Sports by hungryng(op): 11:14am On Nov 20, 2017
Most people fail to realize that even before the import of sports like soccer, baseball, basketball, rugby and the rest into Africa, there were indigenous African sports that enjoyed huge patronage and goodwill but unfortunately these sports have been relegated and slowly being forgotten. The spirit of some of these games can be re-awakened and who knows, can even be incorporated into the Olympics. Here are our Top 7 Most Popular African Traditional Sports.

1. TA KURT OM EL MAHAG
There was a sport that bore a striking resemblance to the European based baseball called Ta kurt om el mahag played among Berber tribes people in the Libyan desert. It is popularly believed that the sport was exported to Europe during the Stone Age and renamed baseball thereafter.

2. NGUNI “STICK FIGHTING”
This martial art form is popular among the Nguni herders in South Africa and is strongly rooted in their history. It’s a stick fight that can last up to five hours where opponents take turns at playing offense and defense scoring points based on which part of the body is struck. It is a bloody sport and sometimes opponents can even die but devotees of the sport wave off the criticism, saying it encourages cultural expression and requires skill, discipline and a firm physique. It has been banned in parts of South Africa but is still played in some townships.

3. DAMBE BOXING
This is an ancient form of boxing with ties to Hausa of Northern Nigeria. Participants travel to different villages at harvest time and challenge those of the butcher class to duel as festival entertainment. The dominant arm of both fighters are tied together with rope and they try to strike themselves with punches and kicks until one person drops to the floor. This is known as “killing”. Does MMA ring a bell?

4. DONKEY RACING
This is the most popular sport Kenya’s island, Lamu. There are no cars on this island. There is annual race organized by the island’s administration and this event attracts thousands of people who enjoy watching jockeys race well trained donkeys with saddles. This sport has been around for centuries and requires a plethora of skills.

5. SENEGALESE WRESTLING
Popularly called “Laamb” in Senegal. This sport is over a hundred years old and began as a recreation sport for farmers and fishermen. Currently elite fighters can command up to $100,000 per match and is a giant rival of soccer in Senegal.

6. SAVIKA
This sport has its origins in the Betsileo community in Madagascar. Angry bulls are ridden and it’s like a rodeo show. A Brahman cow is released from its cage and players try to mount it and hang on for as long as possible. No awards are given at the end of the day just crazy respect.

7. NGOLO AND CAPOEIRA
The capoeira is a very popular afro-Brazilian sport that combines elements of dance, music and martial arts. Capoeira originated in Brazil in the 16th century slave trade era in response to the Portuguese slave masters ban on practicing African traditions, especially martial arts. This capoeira is believed to have its roots in the West African country Angola where it is referred to as “ngolo” or “engolo”.

CultureAn Introduction To Lagos Molue Culture by hungryng(op): 10:18am On Nov 20, 2017
The most popular and most affordable means of public transportation in the city of Lagos a few decades ago used to be the long yellow buses called “Molue”. This remained the most affordable means of transportation for most lagosians because it’s very pocket friendly and goes long distances even though it moves quite as slow as a snail. Come and explore the Lagos molue culture with us.

The name molue was coined from the English word “Maul” which Nigerians turned to “Molue” which simply means ‘Maul it”. The molue was tagged this name as a result of how it get hammered and panel beaten before it can be put together to work. It’s also tagged molue as a result of how passengers struggle with all their might to squeeze into the rickety vehicle in other to secure themselves a sit or a standing position to save money.

This old looking vehicle surprisingly manages to accommodate a maximum of about 44 seated passengers and about 25 standing passengers all in one journey, which results in the slow pace at which it moves.

The most interesting thing about these molue buses is that they’re made from only 2 auto manufacturing companies which are Mercedes Benz with their 911 model and Bedford. These buses are originally old trucks which goes through restructuring process by local artistic panel beaters into buses.

Most passengers who board molue are usually knowledgeable in current affairs and will argue about matters and affairs till they arrive at their desired destinations or bus stops. The whole noise, laughter, arguments and the roaring of the motor engine from the bus is an experience which most passengers never fail to forget from riding Molue.

Riding in the molue can also be seen as a means of exploration on it’s own too because one gets to rush in with other impatient passengers who seem to always be in a hurry to wherever they’re headed, and once you’re lucky to secure yourself a seating or standing position within the bus the next phase of adventure is you facing the bus conductor’s rants about not having and clamoring for passengers to bring out their exact bus fair in other to avoid his wrath and insults.

These buses which used to be the King of Lagos roads has now gone into extinction as better means of transportation services has been provided. A few number of these can still be found in the ‘Oshodi’ and ‘Surulere’ parts of Lagos Nigeria.
