Perhaps this statement is what spurred the current unrest in Northern Nigeria: BUHARI – NIGERIA’LL LIVE WITH THE CONSEQUENCES Still describing the decision of the Supreme Court as politically motivated, Buhari threatened that “the country would live with the consequences of the verdict.” (This Day, 29 Dec, 2011) REVOLUTION IS IMMINENT – BUHARI “The way things are going, we are not likely to get Electoral Reforms of our dream and it seems our government is pushing the country to the level of revolution. This ought to be an eye-opener to our rulers that Nigerians seem to be prepared not to take anything from them again.” – Buhari (Daily Trust, 31 July, 2009.) |
Another threat from our beloved General: “What happened on Saturday April 12, in many parts of the country, fell short of the minimum requirements for a free, fair, credible and transparent election.” Buhari said the opposition “would like to emphasise that any repeat of the fraud of April 12, a fraud we have rejected in totality, will result in mass action and its consequences, which no one can today foresee.” “I will not accept defeat. I will not accept defeat…” (allAfrica.com, 17 April 2003) |
“Gen. Buhari has been quoted at a lecture in Kaduna by national dailies as calling for Gandhi and Kennedy Treatment on the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo. The reference to the two world famous assassinated former leaders clearly shows the intent of the speaker” (Vanguard, 28 May 2003) |
“Buhari had, shortly after the declaration of President Obasanjo as the winner of the last presidential elections vowed to make the country ungovernable by organising mass action to protest the outcome of the election.” P. M News, 19 June 2003 |
Threats similar to the recently issued Parallel Government threat by the APC: “I have no hesitation in rejecting the outcome outright. In the light of the clear case of rape on our democracy, I would plead with the international community not to recognise a government that is being formed on the basis of this contraption because such a government lacks credibility and legitimacy” “Otherwise, there would be no government from 30th of May in this country.” Buhari (This Day, 24 April 2003) |
Promoting Anarchy and disrespect for constituted authority: Rejecting the verdict of the apex court validating the election of President Goodluck Jonathan as the winner of the 2011 presidential election, Buhari derisively stated that the “decision of the Supreme Court is politically motivated and has little judicial content. This Supreme Court has proved no better than the Supreme Court of 2003 and 2007.” Vanguard, 28 Dec, 2011 |
“SERAP and CDHR have challenged recent statements credited to former Generals Muhammadu Buhari… that late General Sani Abacha did not loot the national treasury, saying that the statements ‘amount to a travesty of the truth’, and insisting that these statements ‘are wrong and fly in the face of compelling and proven cases of corruption against the Abacha government….’ The former military heads of state had on Sunday claimed that Abacha, who ruled between 1993 and 1998, was a courageous, loyal and honest military head of state, who stood for the development of the country during his years in government. They also claimed that the looting allegations against Abacha were unfounded and baseless, and without justifications. They stated that the allegations against Abacha remain unproven because of lack of facts.” (Vanguard, 12 June, 2008) |
Defending the truncation of democracy by the military: “No, it is not an aberration. It is up to the people. If you choose correct leadership, there won’t be any need for the military regime. The military came in when it was absolutely necessary, and the elected people had failed the country.” - Buhari (Vanguard, 24 Oct, 2002) |
“I do not see why the agitation for state creation is now being promoted, this is just a way to further support corruption, and as far as I am concerned, it will only promote corruption” – Buhari (Daily Trust, 17 July, 2008) |
