Osun State Governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, has challenged the Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate, Senator Iyiola Omisore, to a public debate ahead of the August 9 governorship election. Aregbesola said this in Osogbo on Monday at the inauguration of Ayegbaju International Modern Market. Speaking extempore in Yoruba language at the inauguration, the governor, who is seeking re- election said that his administration had achieved far more than what the PDP government did in over seven years in office. According to him, the quality of the roads being built by his administration is not comparable to the “poor quality jobs” the past PDP administration did while in office. Aregbesola said, “Call them, let us debate on what we have to offer to the people. It can be for one hour or more. Ask them to come and let us debate. “They are free to choose whether to be the first to talk or to be the last. I don’t care about that but let them come and let us talk.” But Omisore’s reaction could not be got as at the time of filing this report. A text message sent to Omisore’s media aide, Mr. Diran Odeyemi, was yet to be responded to as at the time of filing this report. The governor said that the state was in crisis for the 90 months the PDP spent in office but stated that his administration had succeeded in restoring peace to Osun State. He urged the people to shun warmongers just as he advised the people against entrusting the state in the hands of people he described as clueless. The governor said in his speech that the market cost the sum of N 2.3bn. He said that the problem of poverty was due to people’s inability to trade. Aregbesola noted that most trading and commercial activities in Nigeria were “disjointed, disconnected and disarticulated,” stressing that people could trade their ways out of poverty into wealth and prosperity. He said, “If only we can do this, Nigeria has no business being poor. We have for far too long remained a country of potential wealth. We need to get our acts together, hang together, and begin to get truly wealthy. “With a population of well over 167m our prospects for wealth creation is simply stupendous. Let us take a look around us, even our small state of Osun is home to a few million people who all require one or two goods or services, from one- day-old babies to fully grown adults. Even the dead have needs that must be met.” |
Troops have cleared and taken over Balmo Forest in a military operation that lasted throughout the weekend, the Defence Headquarters has said. Prior to the operation, Balmo Forest, which stretches from Bauchi through Jigawa states with links to the fringes of the Sambisa Forest, was used by terrorists as bases and hideouts for launching attacks. A statement by the Director, Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade, in Abuja on Monday, said terrorists and armed gangs operating in the forests were completely rooted out while some were captured during the operation. It however did not specify the number of those arrested during the operation, but said that two foreigners, suspected to be mercenaries, were among those captured. Also recovered were several weapons and equipment including generating sets, communication equipment, vehicles, motorcycles, foodstuffs and kitchen utensils. In another development, the military said over 44 terrorists died in Kerenoa and adjoining communities, following an encounter with troops who repelled their attack on the communities. The military said that members of the sect armed with Improvised Explosive Devices and other high calibre weapons, had carried out a predawn attack on the communities but were overpowered by the troops. During the operation, several of them were captured as well as weapons and ammunition of various calibre, according to the Defence headquarters. “Meanwhile, troops on routine patrol around Banki and Miyanti in Borno State during the weekend fought through an ambush laid by the terrorists resulting in casualties on both sides. “Altogether, a total of six soldiers were lost in the various encounters with terrorists while those wounded are receiving treatment,” the statement added. |
The Coordinator, National Information Centre, Mike Omeri, has said that the Federal Government is closer to finding the abducted Chibok girls. He stated that security forces were working on leads that would soon result in the rescue of the schoolgirls from Boko Haram captivity. Omeri, who said this at his regular news briefing in Abuja on Monday, explained that the arrest of the chief intelligence operative officer of the Boko Haram by troops had assisted the security forces to get closer to finding the girls. According to him, the Presidency is working hard to end insecurity, and to prevent the security crisis from spreading to other parts of the country. He, therefore, appealed to landlords to identify the origin of their tenants and their means of livelihood to avoid housing insurgents or criminals in their houses. Omeri said, “We are moving closer to finding the abducted girls and we have identified a number of leads. The arrest of the Boko Haram intelligence operative is assisting us in this regard. I can’t speak much on this because the information is classified.” On the reported escape of 63 abducted women from Boko Haram hideouts in Sambisa Forest, the coordinator said he could not confirm the development. He added that he had reached out to officials in Borno State, whom he said had yet to get across to him with the right information. Omeri, who commented on allegation by the Chibok community that they were not being carried along by the government in the efforts to rescue the abducted girls, explained that the NIC had been giving out information in the media on the progress of the rescue efforts. “This centre has been giving out information in the media and everything is in the open. So, I don’t know what they meant by saying we are keeping them in the dark; if they want security report, I don’t know about that. But we can’t give out classified information,” he stressed. |
