President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday in Abuja decried the current situation in the country in which teachers go without being paid their salaries for many months in some states.

Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists.

Shehu said the President raised the concern after receiving a briefing from the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, MacJohn Nwaobiala.

Members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso have said that they will embark on strike from August 11 to protest against the non-payment of their salaries.
The LAUTECH-SSANU Chairman, Muraina Aleshinloye, made this known in a statement on Monday.
According to him, the authorities of the university, owned by the governments of Oyo and Osun states, owe them 13 months salaries.
Aleshinloye, who accused governors Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo) and Rauf Aregbesola (Osun) of not funding the institution well, said their action was affecting workers and pensioners of the university negatively.
The governors, he added, had denied the institution its financial entitlements.
The statement read, “By the nonchalant attitude of the two governors to the university, our pensioners could not be paid while payment of gratuity has been postponed indefinitely. One Kehinde Paul who allegedly raped a two-year-old girl, has been arraigned before the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja.
The mother of the victim, Mrs. Mercy Ofaghae gave her evidence in court as the prosecution first witness, and narrated how her neighbour, Kehinde raped her daughter.
The complainant was said to have first reported the matter on January 13, a day after the incident occurred.
Mrs Mercy said, “That fateful night, my daughter was running temperature as a result of teething. I called my neighbour and friend, Mrs. Layode Paul, the wife of the accused, who brought paracetamol for my daughter and advised me to bathe her. This was 3 weeks after my husband travelled out of the country, precisely on the 12th of January.”
“I waited till the next morning to study her reaction to the drug but it didn’t suppress her temperature, so I decided to go out to get another form of medication for my daughter. I left my daughter with my neighbour’s husband, the accused, because the wife had gone to the salon.
“When I got back home with the drug, Mr. Kehinde’s door was locked and after knocking, I had to wait for about an hour before he opened the door; he claimed he was in the bathroom. The Civil Societies Coalition for Emancipation of Osun State has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of shielding Governor Rauf Aregbesola from being investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission following the allegations of corruption against him.
The chairman of the group, Mr. Sulaiman Adeniyi, said this at a press conference he addressed in Osogbo on Monday.
Listing the many ‘sins’ of the governor, Adeniyi said the governor lied about the amount of revenue which accrued to the state in the past four years. He added that the governor circumvented the due process and accountability in public finance.
According to him, the administration stopped civil servants from preparing salaries and contracted same out to a firm from Lagos which, they claimed, colluded with the governor to illegally jerk up the wage bill from N1.3 billion to N3.6 billion despite that one thirds of the civil servant voluntarily retired in 2012.
Adeniyi said the governor had committed many impeachable offences and anti -graft agencies ought to have begun investigations into the allegations against the governor.

He said some of the aides of the governor ought to have been investigated and prosecuted if the governor still enjoyed immunity from prosecution.
He said, ” President Muhammadu Buhari is shielding Aregbesola from Investigation by anti-graft bodies over criminal financial mismanagement.
“We are surprised that despite the fact that the Oloyede’s petition was sent to the EFCC and the ICPC about two months ago, these agencies of the Federal Government, under President Muhammadu Buhari, have refused to respond to this matter of urgent public interest.
“The mismanagement of the state’s resources has led to the death of many citizens from extreme poverty occasioned by the governor’s failure to pay salaries pensions and cooperative deductions thereby killing commercial activities and threatening the security of lives and property of the state.”
Speaking on the probe panel set up by the House of Assembly to investigate the petition of corruption written by Justice Folahanmi Oloyede, Adeniyi said the panel had written their report even before the commencement of investigation.

Suspected militants of Nigerian Islamist group Boko Haram on Monday attacked a gendarmerie camp in Cameroon’s Far-North Region.
An unnamed army source told Xinhua that fighters from Nigeria crossed the border and raided the camp in Afade, a border village, in early morning, burning down two vehicles and killing two “detainees.”
The fighters ran away before the defence and security forces could take any action, the source said.
Four soldiers and three policemen were found missing after the attack. It is still unknown whether they were kidnapped by the fighters, according to the source.
A suspected Boko Haram member on Saturday carried out a suicide bomb attack in Maroua, capital of Far-North, leaving at least 25 people killed, according to hospital sources.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) on Monday threatened to withhold results of candidates in 19 states who wrote the May/June 2015 West African Senior Certificate Examination (WASSCE) over non payment of exams fees by their state governments.
The 19 states according to the WAEC Head of National Office (HNO), Mr. Charles Eguridu, owe the council over N4billion for examination fees of their candidates for the May/June 2015 WASSCE and also few in 2014.
Eguridu who briefed newsmen on the debt issue along side some management staff at WAEC national office, Yaba, Lagos, gave the affected 19 state governments two weeks to settle their debt and warned that the council would not release the results of their candidates if they failed to meet up the deadline.
His words: ‘’As you are aware, the council has successfully conducted the May/June 2015 WASSCE and is working assiduously to ensure that the results are released on schedule.
‘’Again, as you aware, many state of the Federation, as part of their education policy, pay the registration fees of candidates for the WASSCE, particularly in their public schools. This is quite commendable as it has afforded many indigent students the opportunity to sit our examinations and relieved many poor parents of this financial burden.
However, this obviously good gesture has come at a price to the council. As I speak to you now, we are cash-strapped as a result of the delay in off-setting the registration fees owed the council by some states. As a result, we are finding it difficult in meeting our financial obligation, particularly to our supervisors, examiners and service providers.
‘’A total number of 19 states in the country are owing the council in respect of entry fees for state government sponsored candidates for the May/June 2015 WASSCE. Some states also still owe the council registration fees for the May/June 2014 WASSCE.

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday granted an application for the judicial review of the decision to stop some applicants from writing entrance examination into the University of Lagos for this year’s admission.
The applicants had headed for court alleging that the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, had issued a directive stopping them from participating in the UNILAG’s post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations scheduled for August 12 and 13, 2015.
The applicants, through their lawyer, Dr. Kayode Idowu, also accused Ojerinde of ordering the removal of their names from the list of applicants eligible to sit the UNILAG’s 2015 post-UTME and sending same to other institutions that they had not chosen.
They also alleged that though they scored above the JAMB’s publicly announced 180 cut-off mark, UNILAG had however refused to sell its post-UTME forms to them following the alleged directive by Ojerinde to send the names of all candidates with less than 250 marks to other institutions.
In their ex parte application moved before Justice Mohammed Idris on Monday morning, the applicants had prayed for the leave of court to apply for an order of mandamus compelling UNILAG to sell the post-UTME forms to them so they could sit the exams.

They also sought the leave to apply for an order prohibiting the removal of their names from the list of candidates eligible to sit the 2015 UNILAG’s post-UTME scheduled for August 12 and 13.
The judge, after hearing their lawyer, Idowu, granted the applicants an order to seek judicial review of the respondents’ decision.
“It is in the interest of justice that the application is granted as prayed,” Idris held.
The court adjourned till August 10, 2015 for further proceedings.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday in Abuja said only patriotic, decent and experienced Nigerians would be appointed as ministers in his government.
The President, who was responding to questions on ‘Good Morning Nigeria’, a television programme, said politicians and technocrats would make the list of nominees for ministerial appointments.
“From what I have seen so far, we need really patriotic Nigerians – Nigerians that can work very hard, knowledgeable, experienced, committed Nigerians – to be in charge of ministries.

He promised that his administration would continue to update members of the public on government’s investigation into the matter.

The United States will offer to help Nigeria’s new leader track down billions of dollars in stolen assets and increase US military assistance to fight Islamic militants, US officials said, as Washington seeks to “reset” ties with Africa’s biggest economy.
The visit to Washington by President Muhammadu Buhari is viewed by the US administration as a chance to set the seal on improving ties since he won a March election, hailed as Nigeria’s first democratic power transition in decades.
US cooperation with Buhari’s predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan, had virtually ground to a halt over issues, including his refusal to investigate corruption and human rights abuses by the Nigerian military.
“President (Barack Obama) has long seen Nigeria as arguably the most important strategic country in sub-Saharan Africa.
“The question is: would there be an opportunity to deepen our engagement? That opportunity is now,” US Deputy Secretary of State, Tony Blinken, told Reuters.
The improving ties with Nigeria, Africa’s biggest oil producer, came as US relations have cooled with two other traditional African powers – Egypt and South Africa.
US officials have said they were willing to send military trainers to help Nigeria counter a six-year-old northern insurgency by the Boko Haram Islamist movement.
Since Buhari’s election, Washington has committed $5m in new support to a multi-national task force set up to fight the group. This is in addition to at least $34m it is providing for Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon and Niger for equipment and logistics.

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Mr. Lateef Raji, says the Director of Media and Publicity, Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organisation, Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode, is envious of the many achievements of the National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

The Chairman of Post Election Review Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, Emeka Ihedioha, has said that the party will bounce back and reclaim its political dominance in Nigeria come 2019.
Ihedioha spoke at the commencement of a two-day sitting for the South-West post-election review of the party in Ibadan. He attended the meeting with other members of the committee, Adamu Waziri, Florence Ita-Giwa and Uzor Azubuike.
The former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives said the party deemed it necessary to review its performance in the last election and why it lost power to the All Progressives Congress because of the need to look inward and discover the defects in its structure.
