Science/TechnologyRe: How Electricity Is Generated From Water - HYDRO-POWER/HYDROELECTRICITY by Ibcdesigns(op): 4:19pm On Jan 12, 2016
Summarily, the process starts at the dam which serves as a reservoir for water, water is allowed to move vertically downwards through what is known as a penstock, the penstock channels the water directly to the blade of the turbine, a turbine blade is just like the fan blades we use at home, but constructed with the sole aim to turn kinetic energy to mechanical energy (via rotation). The mechanical energy generated at the turbine is transmitted to the generator through a shaft known as the runner; when current is passed through magnets, the magnets are said to be electromagnetic, an AVR (automated voltage regulator is connected to the exciter to supply voltage to make the magnets electromagnetic. The generator here works with the same principle of electromagnetism whereby a conductor cuts across an electromagnetic field to create induced electromotive force at the end of each full revolution.

It is also worthy to note that the three color codes used in everyday electrical connections also got its root from this concept: the stator is made up of three distinct conductors with different properties and as such the current generated at every stage of the revolution differs.

Science/TechnologyHow Electricity Is Generated From Water - HYDRO-POWER/HYDROELECTRICITY by Ibcdesigns(op): 11:53am On Jan 12, 2016
The principle here is called hydro-power energy or hydroelectricity, hydro means water, and thus, hydro-power energy is power gotten from water.

You must have been wondering how water becomes a strong tool in the generation of electricity, you might also be wondering how the whole process operates most especially that of our own Kainji dam also known as Niger dam, how on earth would a dam (a dam is a body of non-flowing water) be the basis of power generation in Nigeria, this article explains in lay man terms the simple principle behind power generation from water. (Picture 1).

Now let’s roll, the process of hydropower energy in this case all starts at the dam, as i said earlier, a dam is a body of water that is not flowing, in other words it is a barrier constructed across a stream to impound water, thus, a dam can be said to be synonymous to a reservoir of water.

Water in the dam is allowed to flow through pipes called penstock in a vertical plane (Picture 2), it is to be noted that there is a need for a difference in height between the dam and the other components of the plant. Each penstock has its own hitch gate at the top to stop water flow for maintenance or during emergency. i.e. to control water flow.

At the end of the penstock is the scroll case (Picture 3), which is designed to create a consistent pressure of water entering the turbine from all sides. Inside the scroll case is a set of veins known as the wicket gate.

The wicket gates (Pictures 4 & 5) are controlled by a governor system which closes and opens them in response to the condition at the national grid, this means that a higher load on the system opens the wicket gate and a lower load on the system gradually shuts the wicket gate.
The turbine blades transmits the rotational motion to a shaft known as the runner (Picture 6) which in turn transmits to the generator.

The generator at this point is not the same as the domestic generator, though they both work with the same principle, the principle of electromagnetism, just that the rotational motion in the domestic generator is gotten from the piston effect which is sourced from burning fossil fuel i.e. petrol, contrarily, the rotational motion in this plant is sourced from water which drives the turbine to turn kinetic energy to mechanical energy.

The generator then uses the principle of electromagnetic induction to turn the mechanical energy developed by the turbine to a three phase alternating current which is Electrical energy; this connects to the national grid and then subsequently gets transmitted and distributed via transmission and distribution lines respectively, and that’s how you get power at your homes and offices for both domestic and industrial uses.

9. Re-Using Your Cans
Apparently, You throw away your milo or malt cans after use, not knowing you can indeed put these cans to creative use, spanning from using the cans as light stoves, herb garden to using them as Recycled Aluminum Pull Tabs Jewelry or even a Beer Can Sofa. if you cannot do any of these, keep the cans for the scavengers, its definite it'll end up re-used that way.

10. Creating a Plastic Spoon Lamp

Plastic spoons are so common in Nigeria, most especially around the festivities just like this, You can put them to better use by bringing them all together to make a lamp.

Get a big bottle jar, just like the bottle of a big tasty-time, cut only the broad end with a knife, then move to the collection of spoons, cut the handle of each individual spoon and apply a tint of liquid gum at the broader end of the spoon as shown in the picture below. You can now start placing the spoon just around the tasty-time jar from bottom to top making sure that each spoon placed overlaps each other as you move towards the hollow neck, leave it to dry, then get a bulb (Bulb color as you wish) with a lamp holder on a vertical support. Cover the bulb with the dried firm spoon catologue. there you have it. Your Own Plastic Spoon Lamp.

I wrote this article with a bid to share really interesting things you could lay your hands on while idle, nobody is an island of knowledge or creativity, its all about critical thinking and practice, Cheers to the new creative buddy reading this.

5. Using Coke To Wash The WC the magic.

The key is patience, pour the Coke into the bowl. Pour the Coke around the rim of the bowl. Let it flow over the stains below. Be sure to give all the stains a good even coating of Coke then
Let the Coke sit, the longer you let the Coke sit, the more of a chance you give the acids in the Coke to break down the stains. Try to let the Coke sit for at least an hour without disturbing it or perhaps leave the coke in the basin overnight, when you wake in the morning flush to experience the magic. Coke works as a cleaner because of the gentle carbonic and phosphoric acid it contains. These chemicals come from the carbonation, not from the flavorings in the soda, so Diet Coke works just as well as regular Coke. This also means that club soda and many other carbonated beverages can be substituted for Coke (though these are rarely as cheap).

6. That Okirika Jeans ZIP Must Not Embarrass Me- Wey my keyholder!!!

Lol, ye, i must not be embarrassed with the gravity effect consequently displayed by my excited zip line. The concept is using your keyholder's round brace, simply insert the brace into the square hole of your zip handle as shown below, zip up then hang the brace around the button of your trouser. lobatan. You can save yourself the stress of frequently zipping up at least till you get home.

7. Using An Old Newspaper to absorb Liquid at the bottom of your BIN

Water is a strong composition of our domestic waste with environmental effects ranging from odor to denying aesthetics, a way to salvage this is to as much as possible reduce the amount of wet waste you put in your indoor bin, but in unavoidable situations, you can prevent by basing your bin with stacks of old newspapers.

8. Heavy Sleeper? Try This

Are you an heavy sleeper just like me? in fact the snoozing effect of an alarm makes my sleep melodious rather than terminate the melody. Try putting your phone in an empty glass, allow it to snooze and feel the effect. Note-Don't use an expensive glass, lol.

Good day Nairalanders, with all sense of humility, i'd like to share with you twelve casual ways to be creative with stuffs around you this festive. Happy Viewing...

1. Use a spring from your old pen to protect your charger from bending or breaking.

Have you been wondering what the spring of an old pen could be used to do? Or wondering how to prevent your charger from breaking just at the charging neck? Using the spring as a stability structure for your charger is not a bad idea since the diameter of most cables are equivalent to the inner diameter of the spring, its a win win.

2. Putting a dry tea bag in smelly shoes.

Tea seems not to be the only product of a tea bag, Moisture is the property that makes your shoe smell, the ability of a teabag to absorb odor via moisture cannot be over-emphasized. You simply take the tea bags after using them for tea, dry them out then put them near the toes on the sole of the shoe. This works great in tennis shoes or any shoe that absorbs moisture that has a bad smell. Try it out! You can also take any peel from a citrus fruit such as an orange, grapefruit, lime or lemon and put that peel in the shoe as well and leave it in overnight. Take it out in the morning and see how that changes the smell of your shoe.

3. Getting More Space In The Microwave

This is indeed a conservative method, and as an environmental engineer, i see this as one of the fast ways to ensure cleaner production in reducing total power utilization. Now back to the gist, my microwave at home has a space width of 3 inches, that means i cannot conveniently put two plates of at least 2inches each at once, this method mitigates that. Look for a tin with a lesser diameter and height (Not lesser than what can carry your second plate), then place the second plate on the tin. Since the microwave works on a rotating principle, the rotation on the tin is transferred to the plate and space is conserved.

4. Using Your Egg Crate To Cool Your Laptop as a Laptop Fan

A laptop fan in ibadan starts from 3k5, you don't have the money to buy one now but your laptop would not stop overheating most especially when you place it on a flat surface, an egg crate could come to your aid. Almost all households have an eggcrate in the kitchen, pick it up and clean it, place it calmly on the flat surface or your bed, then put your laptop on it, the egg crate does two things intermittently, its made of composites which are insulating (repels heat) in property, and it give space for aeration (air flow). After knowing this, i hope u'll still use ur crates for eggs oooo. hahahhahaha...
