CareerEmployee Hierarchy In Nigeria by ibukoool(op): 1:41pm On Dec 17, 2015
Hello All
I was walking through the streets of Lagos on a lovely Saturday morning when I saw an Asian man yelling at a Nigerian man around age 40’s, saying “if you don’t need the job man !! Quit there is a lot of people ready to take your space”. I was angry but although I don’t know what the man has done wrong. Ever since then I have been studying with a close look at how employers manages employees.
I am writing this short article not to cause any controversial, dispute, misunderstanding or any form of violence, it’s just my opinion and observation.
Nigeria is a middle income, mixed economy and emerging market, with expanding financial, service, communications, technology and entertainment sectors. It is ranked as the 21st largest economy in the world in terms of nominal GDP, and the 20th largest in terms of Purchasing Power Parity, And yet the unemployment rate rising from 6.4% to 7.5% to 8.2 in no time.
I was fortunate to work under a black American man in Nigeria and I really enjoyed him as my line manager, but my friends that worked with this Asian man in the same company really complained bitter about the way they are being treated under his supervision. I then started to notice the trend among several other employees in the organization. This so called Asians, Chinese, Lebanese, Korean or Indians are very bad in managing employees in Nigeria.
This Indians or Asian are employed in companies in Nigerian because they believe they can give result with in minimal man power. They collect huge sum of money as salaries while they make Nigerian workers like slaves on their fathers land. Work that should be completed with 100 workers would be subjected to 40 staffs. They make you work Monday to Saturday, increase the normal standard 8 working hours to 12 hours. They make you sign contract like “you may be subjected to overtime when need be” but you end up doing overtime every day. They are able to archive that because rate of unemployment and I don’t think there is a regulatory body that look into how labour is been handled in this country.
Fine, this people create jobs in Nigeria and bring new innovations to Nigeria. The worst part of the picture is that when there is an opening in to top position or managerial position with attractive salary in an organization. These so called Asians or Indians go back to their country to bring in people, families and relatives that have little or no experience to fill in that post again, leaving Nigerian that have been working there for a long time stay stagnant.
Despite the Huge sum of money this organization make in our country with our economy hardly can you find Nigerians in the top post or decision takers of the company. When a Nigerian earns #400,000 in a job position am telling you an Asian would earn close to #1,000,000 monthly in the same post, Is it that what they do -no Nigerian can do or what?
I think it’s time we open our eyes to reality and the government should have a law guiding employment in this country. Take a good look around you, this Asians and Indians are tripping into this country every day to take our place, works and market. I am not saying we should drive them or do anything stupid, am just saying we need that Jobs too. These foreigners are making millions from our economy while we the owner of the Land takes the smallest share of it. Nigerians are not lazy people, we are strong and hardworking people.
This don’t happen in the western world, any organization in the western world must structure its employee hierarchy to suit the citizen.
I think the government should do something about the employee hierarchy law in this country so we can have a fair, good and balance money flow in our country, rather than people invest little in this country and take all the big money back to their country.
“Jumia Nigeria faced Economic crises of recent that made them sake so many employee… how many Asians or Indians are involved?”
I am not a #xenophobe, I just have to compose this article to say my opinion on the state of employment in Nigeria. if I may have committed or murdered any grammatical error in my article kindly help correcting it because I studied Mathematics and statistics all my life time in school.
