Education / DETERMINATION!!! Pregnant @ 18, Best Graduating Student @ 25. by Icerex(m): 8:49am On Nov 05, 2013 |
Seven years after an unwanted pregnancy forced her to drop out of the University of Ilorin, Aishat Farooq emerges the best graduating student of the Bells University of Technology, Ota, Ogun State..... Aishat with her son, Damilola..... The Punch Ota, Ogun State November 5, 2013 When Aishat Farooq gained admission into the University of Ilorin at 15, to study Zoology, little did she know that she was not going to be an alumnus of the institution. That was in 2003. Despite the fact that she was a high flyer in her first two years in UNILORIN, the now 25-year-old indigene of Ilorin West-Local Government Area of Kwara State got distracted along the line. She played the campus love game and got a shocking result: she got pregnant. It was in 2006 and in her third year. She was pregnant for a fellow student whom she had been dating. She was disappointed in herself and thought the whole world was crashing on her. Yet, she vowed not to terminate the pregnancy. Although she wanted to continue her studies in the university, she became disillusioned and dropped out at 18. She sought consolation in trading. But her father, Mr. Shehu Farooq, who believed that his daughter’s academic prowess should not be wasted, was determined to get her back on the academic track. Today, Aishat has a different story to tell. On Saturday, she stood tall among her peers at the 5th convocation ceremony of Bells University, Ota, Ogun State, where she emerged the overall best graduating student with a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.93. “The rebel in me won,” she declared while giving the valedictory address on behalf of the 208 graduating students of the university. Quote “I hope my story will inspire at least one person to change his or her circumstance. I was pregnant at 18 and by 19 I was already a mother. I had disappointed my father who believed so much in me. He had such big dreams for me and feared the dreams would become unfulfilled.” “I’m a goal getter. I push myself hard. Even here (BELLSTECH) in spite of being a mother, I was pushing for the best despite the challenges. I wanted to make my dad proud again. Once you are determined, nothing is impossible. Nothing can stop you.” Asked if she was involved in any relationship at the Bells, she explained that she was a popular “ snob” on campus because the majority of male students were younger than her. Besides, she did not want to get distracted or disappoint her parents and herself again. She said she has no plans for marriage for now. She wants to pursue a master’s degree programme in Human Resources in the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. She added that she also plans to work in a corporate environment to garner experience and afterwards go back to the university to teach “as a way of giving back.” The second child in a family of eight children, Aishat brought her six-year-old son, Damilola, to the convocation. It was, however, learnt that the Edo State-born father of the boy has since got married to another woman . Crime / Kidnappers Bag 135years Jail Term. by Icerex(m): 8:54am On Oct 29, 2013 |
It was judgment day Monday for five persons, who had been standing trial before an Osun State High Court, sitting in Iwo, for kidnapping the wife of the state House of Assembly Speaker, Alhaja Muibat Salaam, as the court sent them to a total of 135 years in imprisonment. Justice Moshood Adeigbe sentenced each of the five accused persons facing a three- count charge of conspiracy, kidnapping and unlawful possession of firearms to 27 years imprisonment. The convicts are Chukwudi Okereke (40), Ogbole Ochijile Elijah (25), Okonkwo Lucky (33), Kaikine Mahah (35) and Nwadinnor Philip (30). Immediately the judge pronounced the sentence, the family and friends of the convicts, who had besieged the court with the hope of either a possible freedom or a light sentence for their relatives, burst into tears. The convicts were said to have conspired while armed with AK 47 to kidnap Salaam, who was returning from her shop in her Honda Accord car with number plate OSHA02 at about 8pm around Oke-Oyo Road in Ejigbo, Osun State on October 9, 2012. During their trial, the prosecution led by the state's Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adewale Afolabi, said the convicts had confessed to the kidnapping of the speaker's wife in their individual statements to the police during investigations. Delivering his judgment, Justice Adeigbe noted that the prosecution had been able to establish its case against the defendants, stressing that the confessional statements were clear that the accused persons met at Royal Hotel in Agbor, Delta State, where they planned the kidnap, perfected it in Lagos and carried it out in Ejigbo. The exhibits also showed that the five accused persons kidnapped the PW2 (Mrs. Salaam), forced her into a trailer and dragged her into the bush on their way to Lagos before the Ogun State Police Command arrested them. I hold that the prosecution have established their case and therefore found the five accused persons guilty of conspiracy, kidnapping and unlawful possession of firearms, he said. For the charge of conspiracy, Justice Adeigbe sentenced each of the five convicts to seven years imprisonment; 10 years imprisonment for the charge of kidnapping and another 10 years for the charge of unlawful possession of firearms. He however ruled each term of the sentence should run concurrently since the counts arose out of the charges of the same Act. Earlier, the defence counsel, Sam George and Fredrick Komolafe, had prayed the court to temper justice with mercy because the accused persons are married men with children. But Justice Adeigbe ignored the plea, saying the five convicts deserve the full punishment for their offence , which he described as heartless and condemnable. Komolafe, counsel to Elijah, Lucky and Philip, who spoke after the court proceeding, said they were going to appeal the judgment because his clients were found guilty based on their confessional statements. He said the confessional statements were not tested, adding that the best option to adopt a trial within trial to authenticate the confessional statements. |
