Music/RadioRihanna's Hits Give Her The Record For Most No. 1 Songs by ichomi(op): 6:03am On Apr 23, 2013
Move over, Katy Perry; there's a new record-breaking hit-maker.

Rihanna has taken the record for the most No. 1 songs, beating out every other artist in the 20 years that Billboard has been recording the chart for Pop Songs' radio airplay. This week, Rihanna's "Stay" rose from No. 2 to No. 1, giving the artist her 10th No. 1 song.

RiRi was previously tied with Perry for the most No. 1s, with nine songs each.

Rihanna nabbed her first No. 1 in 2006 with "SOS," the lead single off of her sophomore album, "A Girl Like Me." The 25-year-old singer also counted No. 1's for 2008's "Take a Bow," "Disturbia," and "Live Your Life," 2010's "Rude Boy," "Love the Way You Lie" and "Only Girl (In The World)," and 2011's "S&M." Rihanna's most successful track to date was 2011's "We Found Love" with Calvin Harris, which spent eight weeks as No. 1.

Rihanna's 10th No. 1, "Stay" with Mikky Ekko, is the singer's latest single off of her seventh studio album, "Unapologetic." The 2012 album was Rih's first to hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

CelebritiesProducers Dare Not Ask Me For Sex –annie Macaulay-idibia by ichomi(op): 12:45am On Apr 20, 2013
Recently married Annie Macaulay Idibia says being music star, Tuface Idibia’s wife has been no challenge.

Annie, who spoke with an online news portal, Ibaka tv, on location of a movie, Girls in the mood, Annie Macaulay Idibia, says if at all there is any challenge, it will be that 24-hours is no more enough for her to take care of her two babies.

Beaming with smiles, she says,

“It has been nice, everything I thought and much more. There are no challenges; the only thing is shuffling my work, my home and my kid. I have so much to attend to; I almost feel like 24 hours is not enough. Now I have work, I have my daughter and I have my husband -my two babies to take care of. I also have my own personal runs. So, it is always very busy, my days are always extremely busy.”

Her husband, Tuface, actually sprung a surprise on her on her birthday. He showed up with cake on location. Obviously surprised by his visit, Annie describes her husband’s surprise visit as cute.

She says, “I was supposed to film half day but eventually filmed till pretty late, at about 9.30pm. I am sure he got tired of waiting. I don’t know how he did it with the director and he got the cake. I was just filming and he walked in and everybody started singing ‘Happy birthday’. It was nice and I thought that was cute. I was surprised that he came; I wasn’t expecting to see him.”

In the movie, she plays the character of a girl named Tessy who is a drug addict. The producer of the movie, Prince Iyke Olisa, says this about her character. “She was a drug addict raped at the age of 13 by her uncle. The man denied and the wife sent her out of the home. She was introduced, forced into a kind of odd life. She started living wrong and ended up a drug addict and all manner of things.”

The Tessy character however fascinates Annie as she keeps saying how much she loves the character. According to her, she has never played a role like that and the character is a direct contrast to who she really is.

Annie says, “I play the character called Tessy, I actually really love this character. It is something I have not played before. She is a drug addict; she takes a lot of cocaine, weed, cigarettes, drinks- she is just a very reckless girl. I think what is fascinating about the character is that she is an addict. She is always itchy and when she doesn’t have her fix, she needs to get some. I love the character; it is different from anything that I have played. There was a time she was in jail for about four days and she had had it up to here, she was all itchy and saying she needs her fix. She is a very reckless girl and she is the exact opposite of who I am. I love the fact that I could step out of Annie Macaulay Idibia’s shoes and be somebody else who is totally reckless. I love the character totally.”

She adds that a character she will also love to play is either a blind girl or a hardened criminal.

Annie also states that she has never got advances from marketers or producers.

She says, “I really want to play the role of a blind girl; I want to play a hardened criminal. I have not faced advances from directors or producers. Before when they say it, I don’t get it. I just believe that if you have what it takes, if you have the talent, then eventually you will be called upon. I don’t think there is any field they don’t harass women but if you have it, eventually someone is going to see it and give you a chance. ‘Fear no gree them o’. Nobody tried to hit on me on that level.”

Meanwhile, the couple was spotted last weekend at the MTV Africa All Stars Concert where Tuface flaunted his wedding ring.

“It is official for those who don’t know,” he says, while showing off his ring.

EducationWAEC Withheld His Results Five Times, Now Laspotech’s Best Student by ichomi(op): 1:01am On Apr 16, 2013
how a 27-year-old man battled adversity to emerge the star of the 21st Convocation of Lagos State Polytechnic, Ikorodu

Bakare Opeoluwa’s courage to stand strong in the face of adversity is legendary. Five times, he sat for the West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination and five times his results were withheld. Not because he was involved in any examination malpractice, but for reasons best known to the West African Examination Council.

After his sixth attempt, his full result was however released. He cleared all his papers and applied to the university to read Computer Engineering, his dream discipline. But this was not to be, as his score was below the cut-off point. That is why he opted for polytechnic education and eventually got admission to study Computer Engineering at the Lagos State Polytechnic, Ikorodu.

But in spite of his challenges, Bakare, who had lost his father, graduated on Thursday as the best LASPOTECH graduating student during the institution’s 21st convocation. With a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.97 out of a possible 4.0, Bakare bagged a Higher National Diploma certificate in Computer Engineering. He also made history by becoming the all-time best graduate of the polytechnic.

Born 27 years ago in Illisan-Remo, a town in Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State, Bakare attended Expressway Primary School, Ikosi Ketu, Lagos between 1990 and 1995. He left in Primary Five for Community Primary School, Shangisha, Magodo, where he completed his primary school education in 1996. From there, the last child in a family of seven proceeded to Ikosi High School, Ketu, Lagos, for his secondary school education.

Speaking with our correspondent after he received over 10 awards from the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Mrs. Joke Orelope-Adefulire, who represented Governor Babatunde Fashola at the convocation, Bakare said his road to academic success was not an easy one.

“I finished my secondary school education in 2002. When the WASSCE result was released, WAEC released my English, Mathematics and Physics, but others were withheld. I thought the others would be released, but at the end of the day, they were not. With just three credits, I could not proceed to the university to study computer engineering.

“The following year, I enrolled to retake my papers. I studied hard, but when the results were released, mine was not. And that was how I continued sitting for the same exam in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006. Still my results were not released. I became disturbed but not discouraged.

“In 2006, I did both the May/June and November/December WASSCE and, to the glory of God, one was released and I cleared all my papers,” he says.

But what was he doing during the long wait, apart from preparing for examinations? Bakare said his love for computer moved him to enrol for a diploma certificate in Computer Appreciation at Dequeue Software, Sagamu, Ogun State.

“I was truly troubled during those years, but because I love computer, I enrolled for a diploma course in computer appreciation at the institute in Sagamu. I did so well that I came out with distinction.”

So, how did he cope with the frustration of writing examinations repeatedly? Bakare said it was not easy, but he was determined to have tertiary education.

“Although it wasn’t easy, I was determined to be educated and successful in life. I knew I had what it takes to be successful in me and I knew that even great men always have their ups and downs. But I was encouraged by God and my brothers, Dr. S.A. Bakare and Barrister Ola Bakare. I will also say that my zeal to become the greatest engineer that has ever lived helped me to go through the difficult period,” he says.

He advises youths who are passing through similar situations to be focused and persistent in following their dreams.

“They should always hope in God for the best and always do what is right, irrespective of the situation they find themselves. They should also bear in mind that there is time for everything and that God’s time is the best. They should never lose hope. If I had lost hope, I would not have been able to achieve what God has helped me to achieve now,” he explains.

Bakare, who admitted that he set out to be the best when he resumed his study at LASPOTECH, said the factors that contributed to his feat include God, hard work, proper time management and persistence.

“The very first day I stepped into LASPOTECH, I wrote down my CGPA and hung it on the wall. Anytime I woke up in the morning, it was the first thing I saw and it always reminded me of where I was going and I worked towards it. I thank God that it paid off,” he says.

But why computer engineering and not another discipline? He notes, “Studying computer engineering had always been my childhood dream and I would like to transform Nigeria from being a consumer state to one of the greatest manufacturers of electronics/computer devices and systems in the world. I will also like to help in applying information technology to solve national problems.”

On how he would handle discrimination against polytechnic graduates in the job market, Bakare says this would not be a problem to him.

“Yes, polytechnic graduates are being discriminated against, but in my opinion, university graduates are not better off. By discriminating against HND holders, we are only making nonsense of the already troubled education system because everyone has a role to play in national development and if you really want to make a difference, then you will not only rely on what you are being taught in school. Whether you are a polytechnic graduate or a degree holder, the onus lies on you to develop yourself,” he adds.

Because he was involved in campus politics, Bakare notes that the greatest challenge he had while in school was how to maintain a balance between politicking and academics.

He applauded his mother and brothers for contributing financially and morally to his academic achievements.

“But I must say that some of my course mates, including Alli Kazeem, inspired me to be the best I could be through healthy academic competition. Kazeem, who gave me the toughest challenge, made a distinction. The only regret I have is that my late father is not here to see his boy making him proud,” Bakare says.

He also commended all his lecturers for doing what he describes as a great job, adding that the virtues of truthfulness, honesty, hard work, and diligence they imparted to students would go a long way to make graduates achieve success in life. These virtues, he says, made it possible for him to remain focused and avoid the distraction from female students.

So, was he not into any romantic relationship while on campus? Bakare says, “When you are focused and determined, nothing can distract you. I do have a lot of female friends and there is no way you can run away from women. You just have to maintain your principles and define the limit.”

The brilliant man, who plans to further his education after the mandatory National Youth Service Corps Scheme, however, identifies negative attitude and poor mindset among Nigerians as the nation’s greatest challenge.

He says, “The mindset of the average Nigerian and his attitude are the nation’s greatest challenge. Self reformation, I believe, is the starting point for us to get it right in this country. Yes, leadership plays a major role, if we can all change our mindset and imbibe positive attitude of selflessness, truthfulness, honesty and patriotism. Then, not only Nigeria, but the world at large, would be a better place for us and our children.”

Bakare, who expresses optimism in the ability of polytechnic education to eliminate unemployment in the country, calls on all stakeholders, particularly governments, to invest more in technical and vocational education.

Though he was not the only student who was celebrated, Bakare got over 10 of the awards amidst ovation from the crowd, which included the Rector, Dr. Abdulazeez Abioye, his deputy, Mr. Olasunkanmi Longe, the Registrar, Mrs. Aderonke Ige, parents, well-wishers, lecturers and students.

Other brilliant students rewarded include Godson Thompson, who made a CGPA of 3.85 to obtain the HND certificate in Electrical/Electronics; and Jokogbola Dolapo, who bagged HND in Architectural Design after scoring a CGPA of 3.54

Earlier, the Rector had told the audience that 8,686 students who had completed their programmes in various disciplines would be conferred with national diploma and HND certificates at the occasion.

According to him, 5,854 were conferred with ND certificates, while the remaining 2, 823 were awarded the HND certificates.

Abdulazeez, who congratulated the graduating students on the successful completion of their studies, urged them to have a constructive attitude and always think in terms of solutions and not in terms of problems.

He also highlighted the achievements of the institution in the outgoing academic year to include construction of an access road linking the institution to Itamaga; construction of the sports complex and School of Technology building and supply of machines and equipment to the Civil and Mechanical Engineering departments.

He, however, called on the state government to help the 35-year-old institution to build a befitting administrative complex.

PoliticsCBN After Lamido Sanusi by ichomi(op): 12:34am On Apr 16, 2013
A few weeks ago, the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Lamido Sanusi, said he would not be seeking a second term in office at the country’s apex financial institution at the expiration of his first five-year tenure in June 2014. Sanusi was appointed to replace Chukwuma Soludo, a professor of economics whose tenure was as eventful as it was controversial in many ways, in June 2009.

On assumption of office, as if his briefing was to dismantle his predecessor’s legacies, Sanusi’s first major move was to expose the decay in the nation’s banking sector triggered by non-performing loan portfolio and reckless lifestyle of many operators, which had eroded the gains of the immediate past consolidation of the sector. The dismissal of the hitherto powerful chief executives of seven banks and the bail-out of eight financial institutions were seen by many as critical interventions in the sector, which saved hundreds of depositors’ funds from going down the drain. The move readily conferred on Sanusi the toga of a reformer both within and outside the shores of the country.

The exposure of the weakness and the large scale fraud in the banking sector were an eye-opener to many who had been made to believe that our banking system was immune to the ferocious financial melt-down ravaging the world financial system during the period.

By the way, only a few months earlier, Soludo, whose tenure witnessed a major reform of the banking sector that saw the number of banks reduced from 89 to 24 with the 25-fold jacked up in banks capital base, had assured the whole world that the Nigerian banking sector was safe and secure.

Soludo had told whosoever cared to listen then that his banking consolidation process was a well-thought out policy that foresaw the future of the world financial system and protected Nigeria’s financial sector ahead of the disaster.

Apart from his stride in exposing the rot in the financial sector, his singular devotion to combating inflation, using monetary policy instrument, had received worldwide acclaim, Sanusi’s fiercely independent view on issues beyond the purview of the central bank, including politics has earned him a reputation of an opposition within the government and endeared him to those who view this as a refreshing difference from the known position of people in government.

But Sanusi’s constant penchant to dabble in politics through his public outbursts may have been his undoing, perhaps the reason for his unwillingness to seek a second term in office. A number of analysts have said even if he desired a second term, the government of President Goodluck Jonathan would not oblige him due to his consistent criticisms of the growing corruption in government and the techniques and methods of tackling the nation’s many problems.

From available records, no central bank governor since the late Abdulkadir Ahmed, whose nine years tenure was the longest, has spent more than a term in office. Despite the intense lobby by Joseph Sanusi to renew his term, President Olusegun Obasanjo gave it to Soludo, same with President Umaru Yar’Adua, who discountenanced the mounting pressure from Soludo and appointed Sanusi to replace him.

Also, Sanusi’s reform of the banking sector has failed to impress a number of locals, especially shareholders in some of the rescued banks who lost billions of naira in investments when some of the rescued banks were nationalised. Besides, the acquisitions of Intercontinental Bank by Access Bank and Finbank by First City Monument Bank were seen not to have conformed strictly with his public view on transparency. The massive loss of job in the banking industry due to the manner the reform was managed was also showcased as the evidence that his reform was a mere fluke to deceive the world in pursuance of a perceived regional agenda. Sanusi was accused of vendetta against former chief executive of Intercontinental bank, Erastus Akingbola, over the issue of rivalry in the industry, while his decision to spare some banks whose books were considered worse than the ones rescued was also seen as a minus to his intervention in the industry.

Nonetheless, Sanusi’s performance in the saddle has be rated excellent and his landmark achievement in the banking industry will remain for a long time a reference point.

However, top on the list of the contenders jostling to replace Sanusi are the outgoing chief executive officer of Access Bank, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, and chairman of Stanbic-IBTC, Atedo Peterside. Analysts are of the view that whoever the President chooses next year to take over from Sanusi must equally gird his loins for some drastic change in the industry. Against the backdrop of declining loan portfolio and inability of the financial sector to assist Small and Medium size businesses in terms of financing, the incoming CBN governor should direct his energy on policies to redress this. Equally of importance is the need to ensure monetary policy stability and a safe and sound financial sector through constant monitoring of operators ensuring that the experience of 2009 does not repeat itself.

Nigeria needs a central banker who will be firm and ensure that government is discouraged from destabilising the system with reckless spending, especially as we approach a general election in 2015. The choice of a successor to Sanusi should also be devoid of ethnic or political consideration to promote confidence in the financial system. While the need to choose someone with clear experience in the banking industry is compelling, the government should avoid the pitfall of choosing someone with vested interest in order to protect the credibility of the system and prevent the sector from being hijacked to the detriment of the larger society.

PoliticsMan Arrested After Threatening Vehicle Bomb Near White House by ichomi(op): 12:26am On Apr 11, 2013
He parked his truck in front of the Veterans Affairs Building on Vermont Avenue and walked a block south, near the front entrance to the White House. He demanded to speak to the president. When rebuffed, according to investigators, he told a U.S. Secret Service officer his truck contained a bomb.

“Don’t touch the keys in the ignition or else something bad will happen,” the man said, according to court documents filed in federal court Wednesday. “I don’t care if children or veterans are harmed by the bomb. I only care about speaking to the president.”

Authorities scrambled to close off downtown streets around McPherson Square early Wednesday. Within 2 1/2 hours members of the District police department’s explosive ordnance team determined the threat was false. Traffic returned to normal by 6:45 a.m., before the worst of the morning rush, and a 44-year-old man from Pennsylvania was under arrest.

Krzysztof Wasik, of Hazle Township, Pa., was later charged in the District’s federal court with threatening and conveying false information related to the use of an explosive. The offense carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Wasik’s attorney requested a mental health examination and he is being held without bond until a detention hearing scheduled for Monday.

It was the second scare near a prominent government building since Sunday, when police said a man from Florida parked a car near the U.S. Capitol containing three guns and more than 100 rounds of ammunition. A suspect in that case was ordered to undergo a psychological exam.

In the White House case, police said the suspect left his semi-cab tractor at the corner of Vermont Avenue and H Street NW, just north of Lafayette Park. At about 4:30 a.m., the man approached a uniformed U.S. Secret Service officer at the White House fence line on Pennsylvania Avenue and said he wanted to speak to the president about regulations related to semi-trucks and fines he’d had to pay, according to an affidavit signed by U.S. Secret Service officer Kara Klupacs.

“I know what it takes to get things done around here,” Wasik said, according to the affidavit, before telling the officer that he had a bomb in his truck.

Authorities detained Wasik. and the Veterans Affairs Building was evacuated as they checked out the truck and the threat.

Brian Leary, a spokesman for the U.S. Secret Service, said the president and his family were home at the time, but the White House was not locked down. Leary said Wasik does not appear on a Secret Service watch list.

Dressed in jeans and a black sleeveless t-shirt, Wasik appeared in U.S. District Court Wednesday afternoon, surrounded by three deputy U.S. marshals. When asked by the courtroom clerk to swear to tell the truth, Wasik responded after a long pause, “I don’t know the truth.”

His hometown of Hazle Township has a population of about 10,000 spread over 52 square miles in Luzerne County in eastern Pennsylvania, near where interstates 80 and 81 meet. Telephone and Internet listings show a Kryzsztof Wasik Trucking Co., but no one answered its phone number.

Attempts to reach relatives were unsuccessful. No one answered a number listed for his home, but a woman who lives there told the Times Leader newspaper in Wilkes-Barre that she had separated from Wasik two weeks earlier and that she believes her husband had stopped taking his medication.

The woman, who did not give the newspaper her name, said the Secret Service had called her about 5 a.m. “He’s a great guy. He just needs help,” the woman told the newspaper. “He’s very well liked by everybody. ... He’s into the Bible and God. He’s a good citizen. He must have just snapped because he stopped taking his medications.”

Luzerne County First Assistant District Attorney Sam Sanguedolce said Wasik has no criminal record in his jurisdiction. He said Wasik received a citation charging him with reckless driving in 1997, but the case was dismissed when the police officer failed to show up in court. His name does not show up in federal court records.

In Sunday’s case, Ty C. Mitchum, 59, of Clearwater, Fla., was charged with carrying weapons onto Capitol grounds. On Tuesday, authorities said in court that Mitchum told police at the time of his arrest that he was in Washington regarding his role in “helping take down Osama bin Laden’s terror.”

PoliticsBoko Haram Insurgency In Nigeria Will End Soon – Renner by ichomi(op): 12:14am On Apr 11, 2013
The United States government is hopeful that Nigeria will soon come out of its current security challenges, saying that the joint efforts of the government of President Jonathan and Barack Obama would lead to the defeat of terrorist group soon.

The US Bureau for African Affairs, Ms. Hilary Renner, while addressing journalist recently, said that the American government was still concerned about the ongoing attacks against Nigeria’s citizens, civil institutions and infrastructure by Boko Haram sect.

“The United States has already designated a number of Boko Haram’s senior commanders as terrorists, shining a light on their horrific acts and cutting off their access to the US financial system.

“Violent extremism requires more than just a security response. The group known as Boko Haram exploits legitimate northern grievances to attract recruits and public sympathy,” she added.
