Notorious armed robber, 'General' shot dead

A deadly armed robber who has been terrorizing residents of Ahoada in Rivers State has been shot dead during a shootout with the police.

According to reports, the notorious criminal popularly called 'General' was shot dead yesterday during a fierce battle with policemen. The community members can now heave a sigh of relief following the good news.

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani dismissed his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump as a political novice on Wednesday, stepping up criticism of the Republican's immigration policies including a temporary travel ban on Iranians.

Tehran has already said it will take legal, political and reciprocal measures in response to Trump's order suspending the entry of people from Iran and six other Muslim-majority countries.

Rouhani turned the focus on Trump himself in a live address on state television, saying: "He (Trump) is new to politics. He has been in a different world. It's a totally new environment to him."

"It will take him a long time and will cost the United States a lot, until he learns what is happening in the world," added Rouhani, who led a rapprochement with Washington under Trump's predecessor Barack Obama.

Trump's has said his travel order, signed on Friday, is needed to protect national security.

An Ado-Ekiti High Court, on Tuesday, sentenced a 20-year-old man, John Okebe, to life imprisonment for the rape of a four-year-old year girl in Ekiti community. Okebe, the state counsel, Mr Femi Onipede, had told the court, committed the offence on August 3, 2015 at Isaba Street, Ilupeju-Ekiti in Oye Local Government Area of Ekiti State.


The prosecution had accused Okebe of unlawfully raping and defiling the four-year-old girl which, it said, led to grievous harm on the girl, so much that she was being hospitalised.

The offence, the prosecution had argued, contravened section 358 of the Criminal Code, Laws Cap C 16, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

The prosecution called five witnesses to prove its case while the defense counsel, Mr Taiwo Adeloye called only the accused person as his witness.

The accused counsel urged the court to discountenance all the evidence of the prosecution, describing them as “feeble and porous.”

The state counsel had also urged the court to convict the accused person based on the evidence he had brought before the court.

Justice J O Adeyeye, in his judgment, said the confessional statement of the accused and other corroborative evidences of the prosecution reinforced the conviction.


Justice Adeyeye found the accused guilty as charged, and observed that the act of rape and defilement were rampant in the state.

He said the prosecution counsel had proved its case of rape beyond reasonable doubt, saying “I have carefully considered the evidence of the witnesses for the prosecution and that of the accused persons.

“I found the evidence of the prosecution credible and reliable,” he added.

Justice Adeyeye hereby sentenced the accused person to life imprisonment.

Turkey Brother

The Director of Lagos State Fire Service, Mr Rasak Fadipe, on Tuesday said they recovered two bodies from a petrol tanker and a deep well on Monday in the state.

He said on Tuesday that an unidentified man, who attempted to steal petrol inside a stationary tanker, was suffocated by the fumes and died.

He said, “The tanker was parked opposite Morogbo Police Station, along the Badagry Expressway. The dead man was removed at about 5pm on Monday and was handed over to Morogbo police men.”

In another development, the service also recovered the body of another unidentified man, who fell into a deep well of about 150 feet on Monday night.

Fadipe, who said that the incident happened at Iju Isahga area of the state, stressed that it took them many hours before they retrieved the body.

He said, “We got information that a male adult fell into a deep well of about 150ft deep at Iju Road, besides Skye Bank. Our men mobilised and went there immediately, but were able to retrieve the body many hours later on Monday.

“The well is located at a virgin land, no one knows what the victim was looking for before falling into the well.”

Two Americans were killed in Donald Trump's first anti-terror raid on foreign soil - an eight-year-old girl whose father was an al-Qaeda leader, and a Navy SEAL Team Six member involved in the mission. Nawar al-Awlaki, also known as Nora, was among the non-combatants killed - along with several women - in Sunday's military operation at an Al-Qaeda camp in Yemen.

She was the daughter of Anwar al-Awlaki , a dual US-Yemeni citizen who was the first American to die in a US drone strike.

The other American citizen killed in the raid was Chief Petty Officer William 'Ryan' Owens, 36, who died during a gun battle.

The fate of Nawar's mother is not known, but one of her uncles was also killed, NBC News reports.
Her 16-year-old brother, Abdulrahman, also a US citizen, was killed in a drone strike in Yemen two weeks after their father died in 2011.

After Sunday's raid by the top secret Joint Special Operations Command, US officials said it was estimated that 14 al-Qaeda militants were killed.

Yemenis claimed that as many as 59 combatants and civilians, including women, were killed.

US officials said some of the women were combatants and shot at the SEAL Team Six members.
