South African Advertising Standards Agency pulls campaign that shows white woman feeding black child like a dog after complaints of racism and poor taste

A television and YouTube advertisement that shows a wealthy white South African woman feeding a black child like a dog has sparked outrage and accusations of racism.

The advertisement, produced by global agency Ogilvy and Mather for the South African charity Feed A Child, shows a white woman eating breakfast in bed, baking a cake, eating it in the lounge, sitting at the dining table and watching a film with popcorn, all the time popping titbits into a waiting child's mouth.

The tag line at the end reads: "The average domestic dog eats better than millions of children."

One in ten children dies before the age of one because of hunger in South Africa, and one in five is malnourished.

But the emotive advertisement – which was shown during breaks on South African news channels – has been met with a storm of controversy and complaints to the Advertising Standards Agency, prompting it to be removed.

Commenters on Twitter suggested the advertisement was "hugely racist" and in "poor taste", and the charity had picked "the wrong way to get the message across".

Others defended it, saying desperate situations called for desperate measures, and Feed A Child was simply "pointing out the injustice of starving children".

Both Ogilvy and Mather and Feed A Child apologised for any offence caused by the advertisement.

Alza Rautenbach, Feed a Child's founder and spokesman, told South Africa's Times it was "unfortunate" that what the charity had intended to be a strong statement against a social ill had turned into "a racial issue".

"What if this advert changed a child's life? What if this advert changed 3.5 million children's lives? What if this was your child going to bed hungry tonight, and this advert can change that?" she said.

"The child was a character that the agency used. It wasn't chosen for any specific reason – and yes, the idea was to use multiracial people, just as our country is. It doesn't help to have an advert that is not representative."
