LONDON] British foreign minister Philip Hammond backed Theresa May to be the next prime minister on Monday, saying the interior minister had the pragmatism to get the best divorce deal for Britain from the European Union. Mr Hammond, who campaigned to remain in the EU, said the next leader would have to make a trade-off between continued access to Europe's single market, following Britain's vote last month to leave the EU, and limiting freedom of movement. Ms May, who is the longest serving interior minister in over a hundred years, is the odds-on favourite to succeed David Cameron after he announced his resignation in the wake of the EU referendum result. Ms May's nearest rivals in the race are "leave" campaigners Andrea Leadsom and Michael Gove, and Conservative lawmakers have their first round of voting on the decision on Tuesday. Very nice information |
Ask at a strategic time: A natural time for this conversation may be at your annual performance review, when the topic of salary is not only timely, but often expected. Meaning, no one should be caught off guard by your ask. However, keep in mind your company’s fiscal budget planning in case it doesn’t align with the time of annual reviews. Or, if your company doesn’t have an annual review period, think about having this conversation after you’ve successfully completed an important project or shown excellent work. Be Confident: How is an employer going to feel comfortable giving you a raise if you’re unsure yourself? If you’re confident in your abilities and your ask, you’re already on the right track. Attitude is infectious, and this is the perfect time to project a sense of positivity and self-assurance. Express gratitude: Expressing gratitude and appreciation for what you currently have at the company is a gracious and professional preface to an ask for more money. This will also help mitigate any concerns about coming across as entitled or demanding. Express enthusiasm: Sharing excitement for your future goals, and for the future goals of the company, is a way to show you’re invested in doing your job well. A pay increase isn’t only about past performance, it’s about future expectations as well. Be Clear: Be clear with your desire to discuss your salary. An easy way to segway to the topic is to say something like: “As I’m looking forward to working and growing with the company, I’d love to discuss my salary.” Or, if framing it as a question is more comfortable, you can say, “I’m interested in discussing my salary, is now an appropriate time?” Be Specific: Mention your desired salary number and specifically outline how you came to this conclusion. Now’s the time to let all your prep work shine! Also, be clear about when you’d like your new desired salary to be effective, and any other details that are pertinent to your ask. If you’re still trying to nail down your specific desired salary, research salaries on Glassdoor to see what people at your company get paid. Naira Depreciation: CBN Resumes Dollar Sales to BDCs – Vanguard Lagos — THE Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, is set to resume dollar sales to Bureaux de Change, BDCs, in a bid to arrest the continued depreciation of the Naira in the parallel foreign exchange market as well as reduce opportunity for round-tripping. Vanguard investigations revealed that the CBN, yesterday, held a meeting with the leadership of Association of Bureau de Change Operators of Nigeria, ABCON, the umbrella body of BDCs in the country. It was gathered that the CBN informed ABCON leaders that it would soon resume dollar sales to them. ABCON President, Alhaji Aminu Gwadabe, who confirmed this to Vanguard, said: “We just held a meeting with the CBN and they informed us that they would soon resume dollar sales to BDCs.” He said the apex bank also promised to create additional windows for BDCs to access foreign exchange but that details and criteria would be announced later. He said: “We also assured them that we would ensure that BDCs abide by the criteria as well as comply with all regulatory requirement to justify the renewed confidence in ..... [SAN FRANCISCO] California has overtaken France as the world's sixth-largest economy, fueled by strong growth and the US dollar's gains against foreign currencies, state data released Tuesday show. The most-populous US state, with a gross domestic product of US$2.5 trillion, has also eclipsed recession-plagued Brazil. "This is the result of both good growth in California and exchange-rate movements of the US dollar versus other currencies," said Irena Asmundson, chief economist in the California Department of Finance. Governor Jerry Brown, 78, is running the state during an economic turnaround driven by technology companies including Facebook Inc and Apple Inc, along with agricultural and manufacturing industries that lead the US. California grew by 4.1 per cent in 2015, compared with a 2.4 per cent increase for the US and 1.1 per cent for France, Ms Asmundson said. Last year, California created the most jobs of any state, more than the second- and third-most-populous states Florida and Texas combined. Four of the world's 10 largest companies are based in California, including Alphabet Inc and Facebook. By BusinessNews Staff Nigerian firms pay about 200 per cent more for gas to power their o perations than importers of the product and manufacturers using gas in other countries, an investigation by SUNDAY PUNCH has shown. Specifically, local manufacturers say they pay $7.38 for 1000 standard cubic feet of gas while the product sells for less than $3 outside Nigeria. It was learnt that those importing the product from Nigeria were paying $3 including the cost of freight and other charges. About 100 firms affected by the situation have cried out to the government to prevail on the gas firms to reduce the cost and save their companies from going under. The President, Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, Dr. Frank Jacobs, confirmed this, adding that the association was in the process of hiring consultants to advise manufacturers on how best to engage the government on the pricing.
