Sleep Deprivation May Be Silently Destroying Fertility in Men and Women Abuja, Nigeria – October 2025 Health experts are raising alarm over the growing link between sleep deprivation and infertility warning that inadequate rest may quietly damage reproductive cells and hormones responsible for conception. According to recent findings from the World Health Organization (WHO) and leading fertility researchers, adults who sleep fewer than six hours per night face a sharp decline in reproductive health. Effects on Men In men, poor sleep lowers testosterone levels a hormone vital for sperm production and libido. Medical studies have revealed that men who consistently sleep less than five hours show up to 29% lower sperm count than those who enjoy a full night’s rest. The sperm produced are also weaker, slower, and less capable of fertilizing an egg — increasing the risk of infertility over time. Effects on Women For women, lack of quality sleep disrupts the production of essential reproductive hormones such as estrogen, progesterone and luteinizing hormone (LH) which regulate ovulation. Experts note that this imbalance can lead to irregular menstrual cyclesdelayed ovulation or even failure release an egg (anovulation) Experts Speak Dr. Amina Yusuf, a reproductive health specialist, emphasized the urgent need for better sleep hygiene among adults. Many couples struggling with infertility don’t realize that one of the simplest solutions is adequate sleep. The body repairs and restores reproductive cells during rest, so chronic sleep loss can quietly damage fertility over time,” she explained. Beyond fertility, prolonged lack of sleep has also been linked to miscarriages, hormonal imbalance, obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressureall of which can further complicate conception and pregnancy outcomes. Recommended Sleep Time Health professionals recommend 7 to 9 hours of quality sleep each night to allow the body to restore hormonal balance and repair reproductive cells naturally. As global infertility rates continue to rise, this report serves as a reminder that sleep is not a luxury it’s a necessity for reproductive health and overall well-being.
