Iran's new supreme leader has been wounded, state TV in Iran has reported. Mojtaba, 56, the second son of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was confirmed as his father's successor on Sunday after being chosen by the regime's 88member assembly, even though Khamenei had previously opposed the idea of his son taking over.

Mojtaba, a hardline cleric with a reputation among critics for being vengeful, now finds himself under direct threat from Israel, which has vowed to target whoever assumed leadership following the Ayatollah's death. That danger escalated dramatically after Israeli strikes on the opening day of the conflict killed both Khamenei and Mojtaba's wife, Zahra HaddadAdel, placing the newly appointed leader in a perilous position.

In a state TV report announcing his rise to Supreme Leader, Mojtaba was described as having been wounded in the conflict, with the anchor referring to him as a janbaz-a term used in Iran for someone injured by the enemy-during what Iranian media call the "Ramadan war," their name for the current fighting.

As Iranian state television reports on the ascension of Mojtaba Khamenei as supreme leader, it refers to him as being wounded in the war.

The anchors read reports describing him as “janbaz,” or wounded by the enemy, in the “Ramadan war,” which is how media in Iran refer to the current conflict.

It does not elaborate. However, Khamenei’s father and his wife were killed in the February 28 Israeli airstrike in Tehran at the start of the war.

Khamenei has yet to be seen since the war began. He was announced as Iran’s new supreme leader overnight.

Iran DELAYS state funeral for Ayatollah Khamenei hours before three-day ceremony was due to begin at Tehran grand mosque as Israel and US continue to pound the city

A three-day state funeral for Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei has been 'postponed' hours before it was due to begin, Iranian state media reports.

The ceremony was supposed to unfold this evening at the grand mosque in Tehran but, with Israeli and American strikes continuing to pound the city, will now be rearranged.

Organisers claimed it was delayed 'in anticipation of unprecedented turnout', and reportedly want to wait until the necessary infrastructure is in place.

Iranian TV reported: 'The farewell ceremony for the martyred Imam has been postponed. The new date will be announced later.'

Hojjatoleslam Mahmoudi, head of Iran’s Islamic Propagation Council, earlier announced there would be a three-day farewell ceremony followed by a funeral procession.

The official said the public will be able to pay their respects to the body of late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Prayer Hall starting at 10pm (6:30pm UK time).

'The Mosalla (prayer hall) will be receiving visitors and the dear people can attend and take part in the farewell ceremony and mark a strong presence once again,' he said in comments carried by Iranian media.

An official 40-day mourning period, as well as a seven-day national holiday was announced in Iran in the wake of Khamenei's death.
