Family / 7 Tips To Cut Power Usage And Reduce Expenses by IjustShare: 10:03am On Jun 28, 2023
Top tips to cut power usage and reduce household expenses are discussed in this article. We hope you find it beneficial.

The recent increase in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), otherwise called Petrol, has increased the expenses of most people. Many people now spend more on transportation, fueling generators and even powering their engines. Similarly, businesses now incur more expenditures to keep their businesses up and running. Small businesses, such as bet shops, phone gadget stores, POS outlets, salons, restaurants and bars now either increase their charges, reduce generator usage or do both.

In the same vein, the high cost of electricity and even the possibility of an increment has further stirred panic. People are now looking for alternatives to power and how to further cut down costs and maximize profits. Even, homeowners are now seeking ways to reduce their bills on electricity and petrol alike. If you fall under any of these categories, here are some tips for you

7 Tips to Cut Power Usage and Reduce Expenses
1. Use rechargeable items:
Rechargeable items like power banks, torches, radio/sound systems, fans etc. can help u save a lot of costs. Instead of running your generator for charging, sighting or fanning, you can easily utilize your recharged devices, thereby saving you some extra bucks that could have been used to fuel your generator.

2. Use hangers and arrange your clothes inside the bags:
Hang your shirts and arrange your trousers inside the bag after washing. This can save you the cost of having to iron your clothes every time. Some clothes will naturally be stretched when properly hung/arranged. You will be surprised at how many clothes you won’t have to iron, thus saving you some energy bills.

3. Buy cold drinks/frozen foods:
Instead of buying in bulk and storing them inside your freezer (which will need you to leave it 24/7), you can easily buy your drinks and frozen foods in bits whenever needed. You don’t have to leave your freezer at night simply because you need some cold water the next morning.

4. Pay as you go:
Another great way to reduce your bill is by using a prepaid meter. Opting for a prepaid meter will save you the cost of estimated bills. If you already have the meter, you can further control when and how it is used. For instance, you can switch it off at night while sleeping or during the day while leaving for work. If you do not already have it, a prepaid meter is a good investment.

5. Reuse clothes and go manual:
You may want to consider reusing your clothes a few more times before you wash them. Also, you may want to engage in manual washing of some of your clothes. All these can save you some electricity units which could have been used to power your washing machine.

6. Invest in low-power gadgets:
Consider using/investing in power-saving appliances like energy bulbs, LED TVs, low-voltage freezers and so on. Seldom using heavy gadgets like irons and cookers. Use your fans only when they are extremely needed and put off your sockets/switches when not in use. This will help you save a lot of bucks too.

7. Try alternative power sources:
Other power sources like solar, coal, and gas appear to be cheaper sources and alternatives to petrol and electric-powered gadgets. Solar panels could be costly but there are modest solar gadgets that can be used as alternative power supplies. For instance, there are solar-powered torches, sound systems and so on. Also, some inverter batteries can power your devices for a considerable time.

Bottom Line
Petrol and electricity are the two major sources of energy for average citizens. This could be why it is under constant attack. However, there are methods of bypassing this hardship and maintaining your normal bills and expenses. In this article, we have identified 7 such great ways to cut power usage and reduce bills. If you have any other ideas, don’t forget to share them in the comment box below

Education / Statement Of The WYSN On The Nigerian Students' Loan Bill by IjustShare: 9:53pm On Jun 16, 2023
WORKERS AND YOUTHS SOLIDARITY NETWORK (WYSN)
Press Statement
16/06/2023

Student's Loan Bill Will Further Increase the Burden on the Poor
We stand in solidarity with millions of Nigerian students in demanding the following:
• Academic grants, not loans
• Abolishment of fees across Nigerian universities
• Payment of 7-month backlog of salaries to ASUU
• Free, public-funded, and democratically-managed education

The Workers' and Youths Solidarity Network categorically rejects the bill sponsored by Femi Gbajabiamila and signed by President Bola Tinubu regarding the students' loan policy. We firmly believe that in a country like Nigeria, with a 41% unemployment rate, 63% poverty rate, and a minimum wage of N30,000, introducing student loans will only exacerbate the already deteriorating economic conditions of the country. You just have to look to the US, the strongest economy on the planet, in which student loan has taken frightening proportions. It now amounts to $1,6 trillion and is causing great distress to those who owe money but cannot find a job that allows them to repay them. If US workers can’t repay these loans, what chances do Nigerian workers have?

Therefore, we believe that the government should scrap tuition fees and provide academic grants instead if it is interested in promoting higher education for all.

On June 12, 2023, President Bola Tinubu signed the bill offering no-interest loans to students in tertiary institutions nationwide. This bill was originally sponsored in 2019 by the former Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila. The bill includes several stringent conditions such as the requirement for two guarantors on grade level 12 and above and the threat of imprisonment for defaulters. Furthermore, the bill specifies that beneficiaries will begin repaying the loans two years after completing their compulsory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program.

We think this development will put further barriers to poor people in Nigeria. With average fees ranging from N150,000 to N250,000 in public tertiary institutions today, an individual may accumulate a debt ranging from N600,000 to N2,000,000 depending on their course of study and duration. How can he/she repay this amount if jobs are scarce and badly paid? Student loans will be a burden for many people, which can lead them into another debt trap.

We firmly believe that the Tinubu regime is building upon the eight years of misrule by the APC and the sixteen years of corrupt governance by the PDP. Instead of significantly investing in public education, and providing decent and well-paid jobs, the Tinubu/APC-led government is masking their failures with cosmetic changes. We agree that education is a vital tool for development, and as such, the government should make massive investments in it. This should include, but not be limited to, granting academic scholarships and subsidies to students instead of loans, completely abolishing fees in tertiary institutions, promptly paying the backlog of salaries owed to ASUU members, reviewing and implementing living wages for academic workers, democratizing public education, and ensuring proper funding. Similarly, we demand that the government should focus on providing graduates with decent, well-paid jobs, allowing them to contribute to general development and earn a livelihood.

In a wealthy country like Nigeria, where political officeholders receive exorbitant salaries and allocate trillions of naira to illusory projects and subsidies for their political business partners, investing massively in education should not be an issue. We should demand heavy taxes on the rich, the bankers and financiers, and the capitalists.

We are opposed to the complete sell-out of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) that held a meeting with the president and never called a congress of Nigerian students to determine what approach should be used to oppose these anti-poor policies.
NANS charter of demands includes improved funding of education and against commercialization. The attempt to introduce student loans is also an attempt to introduce outrageous tuition fees.

We stand with millions of other students in demanding an investment program in the Nigerian education system and the abolishment of fees in Nigerian tertiary institutions.

We must organise in every university and community to build such a movement. We need to demand better education in a better society, nationalise key sectors of the economy, implement living minimum wages, invest to create jobs and provide services for the working class, reinstate fuel subsidies, and enact various other pro-people policies. These can only happen in a socialist society. We are dedicated to building such a movement. Join us!

Crime / Free Seun Kuti Now! by IjustShare: 1:17pm On May 22, 2023
Workers and Youth Solidarity Network (WYSN)

22 May 2023
PRESS STATEMENT

FREE SEUN KUTI NOW

The detention and assault on Seun Kuti are unjust, unnecessary, and illegal. We demand an end to his victimization and his immediate release!

The Workers and Youth Solidarity Network (WYSN) strongly condemns the continuous detention, assault, and abuse of the legal process against Mr. Seun Kuti by the Nigerian Police Force. The alleged case of physical assault on a police officer on the Third Mainland Bridge does not warrant the public parade, home searches, and prolonged detention of Mr. Seun Kuti.

The refusal of the police to comply with the court ruling on Tuesday, May 17, appears to be a deliberate attempt to seek revenge against Mr. Seun Kuti for his past involvement in struggles against police brutality. We denounce the Nigerian Police's ploy to deny Kuti's release on bail.

We strongly oppose the prolonged nature of Kuti’s detention, despite him voluntarily cooperating with the police for the investigation. His alleged offense does not justify these excessive measures.

The incident on the Third Mainland Bridge, captured in a short video clip of less than 2 minutes, shows a disagreement between Mr. Seun Kuti and a policeman on an unknown issue, leading to a physical altercation. However, the video clip does not provide context for what transpired before or after the incident. While we do not condone assault or violence towards any citizen, we believe that the mistreatment and abuse of power by the Nigerian Police in this case are unwarranted.

We assert that the resources and efforts of the Nigerian Police should be directed towards addressing the hundreds of terrorists, armed robbers, serial killers, bandits, and gunmen who continue to terrorize the general population on a daily basis.
The situation demands that people hold the Nigeria Police accountable. It is evident that the Nigeria Police are more interested in seeking revenge than addressing the real issues.

Mr. Seun Kuti willingly presented himself to the Commissioner of Police at the Police Command in Ikeja, Lagos on Monday, May 15, 2023. Surprisingly, no interrogation took place as agreed. Instead, Mr. Kuti was transferred to the Force Criminal Investigation Unit at Panti, Yaba. Prior to that, he was handcuffed and had his photograph taken by the Lagos PPRO, Mr. David Hundeyin, who orchestrated the media parade sharing his photograph. The Nigerian Police, through their statement on Twitter, justified the practice of taking pictures of suspects for record purposes. However, we question why these pictures were publicly shared and sent to various media outlets. Perhaps, this was done to create an atmosphere of fear among the youth who have been victims of police brutality and are tirelessly fighting against it. Furthermore, we strongly object to the release of a supposed "investigation report" by Mr. Hundeyin that convicts Mr. Seun Kuti, as only the court has the authority to convict a suspect.

Mr. Kuti should be presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The actions of the police in the past few days have been unlawful and raise concerns about the safety of Mr. Seun Kuti while in police custody.

Moreover, we vehemently oppose the police's decision to subject Mr. Kuti to a media parade. This action directly violates Section 9 of the Lagos State Administration of Criminal Justice Law, which explicitly prohibits any form of suspect parade in Lagos State, Nigeria. As if these transgressions were not enough, the police secretly obtained a four-day detention order from the court without informing Mr. Seun Kuti's lawyer. Additionally, after conducting a search of Mr. Seun Kuti's house, the police proceeded to the Yaba Magistrate Court to obtain an order for a blood test on Mr. Kuti! These actions are totally unacceptable!

It is clear that the police have more urgent matters that should be their top priority. On April 13, 2023, one Mr. Uloko Ojiji (28), a notorious ritualist and dealer in human parts, was arrested and paraded before the media. African Independence Television (AIT) captured the event and published an interview on their Facebook page. Despite being a public threat, the Nigerian Police, failed to charge him to court and instead released him and his associates. These individuals continue to operate freely, even going as far as erecting another signboard to advertise their nefarious activities.

Comrade Alex Ogbu, a journalist, trade unionist, and human rights activist, tragically lost his life on January 21, 2020, at Berger Roundabout, Wuse, Abuja, due to a trigger-happy police officer's bullet. The incident occurred during a brutal police crackdown on protesters demanding the release of Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria. Ogbu was performing his duties as a journalist, covering the demonstration when he was fatally shot. Initially, the police claimed he died from a fall and head injury, but it was later revealed that he was actually shot in the head by a senior police officer.

Mrs. Omobolanle Raheem, a pregnant lawyer, had her promising life cut short on Christmas Day by another trigger-happy police officer. Just last month (April), Inspector Ubi Ebri killed Onyeka Ibeh because he refused to pay a N100 bribe.

Recently, men of the Nigerian Police were caught on camera physically assaulting and abusing a young man, forcibly taking his motorcycle from him, and leaving him bloodied at Jubilee Bridge, Oja Oba Area, Abule-egba, Lagos.

During the #EndSARS memorial protest at Lekki Toll-gate in October 2020, Nigerians who stood against police brutality were shot by the Nigerian military, and no officers have been held accountable for that tragic event to this day. These are just a few examples of the atrocities committed by the Nigerian Police, with little to no action taken to address them.

Therefore, we urgently demand an end to the mistreatment of Mr. Seun Kuti and his immediate release. We also demand a fair trial with a review of all the evidence presented regarding the incident on the Third Mainland Bridge. The Nigerian Police should focus on cases that are of genuine public interest and to stop targeting Mr. Seun Kuti for revenge. Seun's case involves a physical altercation on a police officer and should be treated accordingly. We hold that continuous refusal of the Nigerian Police to release Mr. Seun Kuti will leave us with no other option that to join the people in protest actions, including occupying the Nigerian Police Force headquarters in Abuja and other stations across the country.

Education / Statement Of The WYSN On The N50,000 Acceptance Fee Of University Of Ibadan by IjustShare: 9:22pm On May 18, 2023
WORKERS AND YOUTH SOLIDARITY NETWORK
PRESS STATEMENT
Thursday, May 18, 2023

The N50,000 acceptance fee demanded by the University of Ibadan is a fraud! Students must organize and resist this broad-day corruption now!

We reject the re-introduction of acceptance fees in public universities
We condemn the plan of the UI management to deny children of poor people access to education
For a one-day lecture boycott and mass protest now!

The Workers and Youths Solidarity Network condemns in totality the N50,000 acceptance fee demanded by the management of the University of Ibadan from the newly admitted students. We hold that no university should charge any fee from students to accept the admission offered to them. In line with the directive of the federal House of Representatives on the eve of 2020 that any form of acceptance fee should be scrapped, we demand that the UI management immediately halt the collection of this fraudulent fee and adequately refund the ones collected. We consider this singular act of UI management as an attempt to deter students of the common and ordinary working people from access to the quality education they deserve! Hence, we call on the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and the University of Ibadan Students’ Union to immediately declare a one-day lecture boycott and mass protest to press home this demand.

We refer to the statement published on the website of the University of Ibadan, calling on the newly-admitted students to pay a non-refundable sum of N50,000 to accept the admission offered to them. We can also recall that in 2020 and as reported by ThisDay Newspaper, the Federal House of Representatives ordered the cancellation of all forms of acceptance fees in federal universities and ordered the refund of such fees to students that year. We also recorded that some schools are obliged to that policy. However, we are shocked as this fee miraculously found its way back into the University of Ibadan system where students are mandated to pay a whopping N50,000 as an acceptance fee. We condemn in totality this dubious and fraudulent attempt to milk-dry the new intakes in the quest to get higher education.

Likewise, we see this as an attempt to deny the children of working people who live on a merger N30,000 minimum wage access to quality education. This also shows the current level of the Nigerian education sector which prioritizes profits instead of developing the innate potential of youths and young people. In the past, this fee and other arbitrary levies have denied creative, intellectual, intelligent and innovative individuals access to education that can further polish their skills for national development because they couldn’t afford to pay the fees demanded of them. If the management of UI isn’t curtailed, thousands of useful youths will be denied access to quality education and will be left to roam about the street. Of course, this will contribute to the already-high crime and corruption rate in society because an idle hand is the devil's workshop.

The reintroduction of acceptance fees and hikes and tuition fees across federal and state universities in Nigeria calls for immediate action and intervention. This is why we are calling on the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Students’ Unions, Academic Unions and other well-meaning Nigerians to demand a free, quality, functional, public-funded and democratically managed education sector. Therefore, the NANS should immediately call for a nationwide lecture boycott and mass protest now, involving essential unions and stakeholders, to demand an end to fee hikes, illegal fees and gross underfunding of public education. This demand should also be linked to the payment of backlogs of salaries of the members of ASUU being owed by the federal government.

Education / Group Condemns The Recent Fee Hike In UNIABUJA, Says It's Anti-poor by IjustShare: 10:04pm On May 09, 2023
The recent and concurrent increment in the school fees of the University of Abuja is anti-poor

The Workers and Youth Solidarity Network:

Strongly condemns the recent fee hikes
Calls for an immediate reversal of the fee hike
Urges students and workers to be ready to struggle for its reversal
Calls on the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) to name a day for a nationwide lecture boycott and mass protest.

We, the Workers' and Youths' Solidarity Network, are shocked to hear about the outrageous increment in fees payable by new and returning students of the University of Abuja. The new fee structure requires Health Sciences students to pay a whopping N205,000 - N225,000 in school fees, on top of the acceptance fee of N30,000 and other dues and levies. This is the third time in five years that the school fee has been increased.

The Vice-Chancellor, Rasheed Na'Allah (PhD), claims that the primary objective behind the increment is to make the institution's students the best so their dreams can become a reality. However, we see this development as anti-poor and highly insensitive to the economic crisis facing Nigeria. The school management should turn to the government for funding and not increase the burden on students.

Therefore, we totally condemn this increment and call for its immediate reversal. We urge students and workers to commence a comprehensive struggle for the reversal of the hiked fee. We also call on NANS to immediately name a day for a nationwide lecture boycott and mass protest, to demand the reversal of all hiked fees, an end to education commercialization, and improved funding of public education.

In January 2018, UNIABUJA implemented its first school fee increment, and two years later, as reported by The Guardian, the fees were increased again by 100%, with a two-week deadline for payment. Students took to social media to express their outrage over the insensitivity and recklessness of the University Management and the Students’ Union leadership, who have constantly been tools of the management. After the Covid-19 break, the management locked the portal for fee payment. In February 2021, students used the hashtag #EndUniabujaOppression to lead a protest and occupied the streets of Giri, Abuja, to demand a reversal of the 100% increase and the re-opening of the portal. However, according to Sahara Reporters, the Vice Chancellor of the University refused to reverse the fee, claiming that some students had already paid. This led hundreds of students to drop out of school as they could not afford the new fee.

In 2022, the University Management, still under the same Vice-Chancellor, increased the school fees by over 50%, citing the inability of the university to depend on the government for funds. In a statement obtained from The Punch Newspaper, the University spokesperson, Habib Yakoob (PhD), said that “the increment is not that significant”!

The school management should turn to the government for funding instead of increasing the burden on the students. We strongly condemn these increments and call for their immediate reversal. Students and workers must be prepared to struggle for a total reversal of the hiked fees, and we urge the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) to name a day for a nationwide lecture boycott and mass protest to demand an end to education commercialization and improved funding of public education.

Instead of pushing for adequate funding from the government, the University Chancellor has chosen to increase the burden on the working people who survive on a meagre N30,000 minimum wage. We firmly believe that Vice-Chancellor Na'Allah is unfit to hold the position at the University of Abuja, as he has failed in his primary duty of ensuring the safety and welfare of students.

Furthermore, we reject the N30,000 acceptance fee payment demanded from new students by the University's management. The National House of Representatives, as reported by ThisDayLive Newspaper, directed all federal institutions to stop collecting acceptance fees from new students and refund the ones already paid in 2020. Institutions like Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile Ife refunded this fee to their students in the same year. We are puzzled as to how this fee has found its way back into the UniAbuja system, and we call for its immediate removal.

We cannot overlook the precarious state of the university's hostel and housing system. The current hostel facilities on campus can only accommodate less than 30% of the total student population, leaving others to face exorbitant off-campus rents, security threats, and high transportation costs. We believe that these issues require urgent attention from the University. Instead, the management has chosen to dry-milk the parents of students in an attempt to cover up for the inefficiencies of the Buhari/APC-led federal government.

We also demand that all students who have paid this new fee should be refunded accordingly. Similarly, we urge the students and staff unions of the university to launch a struggle, starting with an immediate reversal of the humongous fee and thorough auditing of the university's account.

We call on the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students to name a day for a total nationwide lecture boycott and mass protests to demand a reversal of all hiked fees, an end to the commercialization of education, and improved funding of the education sector. This kind of struggle must involve the mobilization of students, parents, workers, and community members.

Raising fees has a direct negative impact on the working people. It sends more young people onto the streets, contributing to an increase in criminal activities. The Nigerian government, with the cooperation of university management, continues to deny Nigerian youth their right to quality education through policies such as fee increases, neglect of academic staff unions, and reduced education funding, among other things. Let us also not forget that members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) are still owed over six months' salaries simply because they demanded better and more transparent payment and funding structures.
Only a united struggle of workers and youth can ensure that we gain concessions from the current and incoming government and that we open the way for a better education.

Sincerely,
Damilola Owot

Romance / How To Dress For A First Date by IjustShare: 7:51pm On May 06, 2023
Your first date is near and you are thinking of how to dress for that August event. Dressing for a first date can be nerve-wracking, but the key is to feel comfortable and confident in what you wear. Of course, you have spent time and energy to convince him/her to a date. You have chosen a nice venue too. The only thing left is how to appear on that day.

Your first impression lasts! This is why you need to pay key attention to how you appear on that day. If you are looking for ideas on how to dress for your date, I have a few tips for you.

Things to Keep in Mind When Choosing an Outfit for Your First Date
Here are some general tips to keep in mind when choosing your outfit:

1. Consider the venue:
First, you should think about where you will be going on your date and dress appropriately. If it’s a fancy restaurant, you may want to dress up a bit more, while a casual coffee shop may call for a more relaxed outfit.

2. Mode of transportation:
If you are going to a relatively far place from your home, then you should consider your mode of transport. Are you going in your personal car or using public transport? Generally, you wouldn’t want to get stained before you get to your first date venue.

3. Discuss with your partner:

You can also discuss with your partner the kind of outfit for the day. This will prevent you from overdressing or underdressing on the day.

4. Dress for your personal style:
Wear something that makes you feel good and reflects your personal style. If you feel confident and comfortable in what you’re wearing, you’re more likely to be relaxed and at ease on your date.

5. Keep it simple:
Avoid overly flashy or attention-grabbing outfits. Remember you are going there to meet him/her for the first time and you wouldn’t want to create a false impression about yourself. You want to be noticed for your personality, not just your clothes.

6. Be comfortable:
Make sure you can move comfortably in your outfit and that you’re dressed appropriately for the weather. Don’t wear clothes that are too tight so you don’t get limited on that day. You don’t want to be fidgeting with your clothes or shivering throughout your first date.

7. Pay attention to grooming:
Make sure you’re well-groomed and put together. This includes things like clean hair, trimmed nails, and appropriate makeup. Top up your dress with matching accessories like a watch and chain. Wear a good smell, of course

Bottom Line
You don’t have to borrow or break a bank because you want to appear decent. Remember you are not going to a dressing competition. Don’t add too many accessories; it is a date and not a fashion show

Ultimately, the most important thing for your first date is to be yourself and feel comfortable in what you’re wearing. Your date is interested in getting to know you, not just your outfit.
