Personnel of the 9 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, yesterday, recovered 1,671 Permanent Voters Cards, PVCs, in an apartment in the Olodi-Apapa area of Lagos State.

Three persons were subsequently arrested in the apartment, while the prime suspect was said to be on the run.

Also recovered in the apartment were ballot papers, cutlasses and Indian hemp.

Vanguard gathered that the startling discovery was made in the course of a preliminary investigation into an incident that occurred in the area, yesterday.

The Brigade Commander, Brig. Gen. Isang Akpaumontia, who paraded the suspects and recovered PVCs, ballot papers and other items before journalists at the Ikeja Cantonment, said the arrest and recovery were made following a tip-off.

Most of the recovered PVCs had the year 2022 as the registration number, while others had years 2011, 2012 and 2021 with all the owners being residents of Lagos State.

Briefing journalists Akpaumontia said: “Earlier today (yesterday), three young men were arrested with 1,671 PVCs. This was after early information was received. With the support of the Department of State Services, DSS, we were able to arrest them.

“They were arrested with some drugs, dagger, charms and over 1,000 PVCs. They were arrested at the Apapa general area, in a house where we traced them to. The owner of the house, who is the prime suspect, was traced to a hotel. But he took off.

“We are going to hand these suspects and exhibits over to our immediate headquarters to do the needful because things have to be done the way they should, so as to discourage others who think they can take laws into their hands and go scot-free.”

This is so good on paper. It all depends on the kinda investors that will manage the fund. One question that keeps puzzling me is how Obi saved money in Anambra but there is no State Wealth Fund to show for it. Governments around the world that saves have a wealth fund to show for it.

Everybody knows he is already compromised by his support of a candidate. So nobody will take him serious. He is just sad his candidate will come third.

The build up to the 2007 elections was characterized by political vendetta between the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and its perceived enemies and INEC became a willing tool to persecute opponents of the ruling party. The series of litigations and counter litigations that followed INECâ€™s disqualification of candidates and the refusal of the electoral body to obey court orders became so glaring that no rational mind would reckon with INEC to be fair to all the political parties.

To compound his woes, Iwu remained boastful and incorrigible. As a public officer, he had no regards for court decisions and went to the point of telling Nigerians that he organized the most credible election in the country, yet no election in Nigeria has been so discredited as the 2007 general elections conducted by Iwu given the number of judicial decisions that upturned over 40% of the governorship election results The election results in Adamawa,Â Bayelsa, Cross River, Rivers, Edo, Kogi, Ekiti, Ondo and Kebbi states, were nullified by the Appeal Court. The litigations in Osun, Sokoto, Ekiti and Imo states are still in progress one year to the end of their initial tenure.Â Notwithstanding, Iwu insists he organised the most credible election in Nigeria and even went ahead to recommend the Nigerian model to the ruling party in America. Beyond the arrogance and professional failings of Iwu, there are germane issues that must be addressed even beyond the passage of the electoral reforms bill and change of personnel at INEC leadership.
