Foreign AffairsThe Entire World Population Could Fit In The State Of Texas by imeller(op): 11:56am On Jan 23, 2013
The entire world population could fit in the state of Texas and it’d only have the population density of New York City!

People freak out all the time about how we’re overpopulating Earth and we’re all going to die, because we can’t sustain ourselves. There isn’t enough land to produce enough food to sustain us, let alone have any space to move around at all. There are 6.8 billion people on Earth. Calculations show that if we wanted to make everyone in Earth live on a space that had the same population density as New York City, we could fit everyone in about 666,265 square kilometers, which is less than the size of Texas!

So, every man, woman, and child could fit pretty comfortably within the perimeter of the state of Texas. Not only does that leave the other 49 United States open, but it leaves all the other countries clear and open, too. So, it is pretty safe to say that we have enough space, the entire world except Texas, to farm and ranch for our food supply.

Would water be a problem, though? It's calculated that we need 350 billion liters of water per day to properly hydrate 6.8 billion people. It seems like a lot, but the Columbia River alone could produce that amount in less than a day. By the way, the Columbia River is the U.S.’s fourth largest river. So, again, that leaves the rest of the world’s water supply open and ready to serve. So, we’re not really overpopulated. We just need to be better at managing our resources.

Foreign AffairsAfrica Security Challenges Demand Obama's Attention by imeller(op): 7:47pm On Jan 21, 2013
As U.S. President Barack Obama begins his second term in office, his administration faces urgent security challenges in Africa. Top on the list is the conflict in Mali, which analysts say may cause the United States to rethink its counterterrorism strategy in Africa.

While U.S. drones and surveillance planes buzz the skies above conflict zones across Africa, the U.S. president has engaged little in African affairs.

President Barack Obama walks with Ghana President John Atta Mills, right, at the Presidential Palace in Accra, Ghana, Saturday, July 11, 2009.
During his first term in office, Obama made only one trip to Africa - a stop in Ghana that lasted less than 24 hours.

But an Islamist militant insurgency in Mali, fueled by the North African branch of al-Qaida, could raise Africa's security challenges to a more prominent place on Obama's second-term agenda.

Paul-Simon Handy, the head of the conflict prevention and risk analysis division at the Institute for Security Studies in South Africa, said, "I think the Obama administration will focus a bit on that part of the continent as a global challenge, not only to state-building, but as a global terrorist challenge.”

To address the crisis in Mali, the U.S. is sending about 100 military trainers to countries in West Africa, contributing troops to a regional military force being deployed to support Mali's national army.

While this strategy of building the capacity of African militaries rather than deploying U.S. troops has been typical of the Obama administration's response to conflict in Africa, it does not always work.

In Mali, the United States has spent millions of dollars during the past decade training counter-terrorism forces, but still could not prevent the takeover of the country's north by Islamist militants.

Handy says to avoid past mistakes, the United States should put more effort into diplomatic engagement and working with African states to build solid government institutions.

"Focusing too much on the military has in a sense led to a setback in the democratic gains in certain regions like West Africa. What the U.S. will have to change is to look at the fight against terrorism in a holistic way," he said.

Meantime, U.S. officials have been encouraged by the political and security progress made in Somalia during the past four years, which could be a clue as to how the country will engage Africa in the years ahead.

The United States been one of the biggest financial supporters of the African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia, while Washington has also engaged Somali politicians throughout a long political transition.

In a speech last week, Assistant Secretary of State Johnnie Carson said the Obama administration's strategy in the country could serve as a “potential model for the resolution of other conflicts on the continent.”

Christianity EtcPope Benedict Tweets In Latin by imeller(op): 10:42am On Jan 21, 2013
Pope Benedict tweeted in Latin for the first time today and drew a blank response from many followers.

'Unitati christifidelium integre studentes quid iubet Dominus? Orare semper, iustitiam factitare, amare probitatem, humiles Secum ambulare,' the pontiff wrote.

The pope’s tweet meant: 'What does the Lord command to those wholly eager for the unity of those following Christ?

'To always pray, to continually do justice, to love uprightness, to walk humbly with Him,' according to University of Cambridge scholar Tamer Nawar.

Baffled? So were many Twitter users. 'Benny, nobody understands a word of Latin!' read one response on the online messaging service.

The message was shorter and, arguably, more elegant in its original language - one of the reasons why Latin-lovers want to conserve the tongue of ancient Rome, Pope Benedict foremost among them.

The Holy See, where even ATM bank machine transactions are available in Latin, is one of the last bastions of the language that gave rise to Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian and Romanian.

In November the pope set up a new Vatican department charged with promoting the study and use of the language within the Roman Catholic Church and beyond.

Foreign AffairsEvidence Of Life On Mars With PIX by imeller(op): 10:08am On Jan 21, 2013
A new study suggests the ingredients for life have been present beneath the surface of the Red Planet for much of its history.

Minerals beneath the surface of Mars could hold the strongest evidence that the planet may once have supported life, according to new research.

Half of all life on Earth consists of simple micro-organisms hidden in rocks beneath the surface. Scientists have now suggested that the same may be true of Mars.

Research published in the journal Nature Geoscience suggests the ingredients of life have been present in the "Martian subsurface" - a zone up to three miles below the ground - for much of Mars' history.

Many rocks brought up from the "Martian subsurface" contain clays and minerals whose chemical make-up has been altered by water, an essential element to support life.

Some deep craters on Mars may also have acted as basins where groundwater likely emerged to produce lakes, according to a statement released by the University of Aberdeen.

"Exploring these rocks on Mars, where the ancient geologic record is better preserved than on Earth, would be like finding a stack of pages that have been ripped out of Earth's geological history book," said Dr Joseph Michalski, lead author and planetary geologist at the Natural History Museum.

"Whether the Martian geologic record contains life or not, analysis of these types of rocks would certainly teach us a tremendous amount about early chemical processes in the solar system."

Current exploration of Mars focuses on investigating surface processes because sedimentary rocks are most likely to provide the best chance of evidence for habitability.

However, the evidence suggests that the Martian surface environment has been inhospitable to life for billions of years.

In future missions, scientists may choose to target rocks related to the surface or subsurface, or perhaps do both by targeting areas where sedimentary rocks formed from subsurface fluids.

Dr Michalski said the new research presents a "strong case for exploring the subsurface, as well as the surface", of the Red Planet.

But he added: "I don't personally think we should try to drill into the subsurface to look for ancient life.

"Instead, we can study rocks that are naturally brought to the surface by meteor impact and search in deep basins where fluids have come to the surface."

WebmastersIndicted Megaupload Founder Launches New Site by imeller(op): 1:55pm On Jan 20, 2013
Indicted Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom launched a new file-sharing website on Sunday, promising users amped-up privacy levels in a defiant move against the U.S. prosecutors who accuse him of facilitating massive online piracy.

The colorful entrepreneur unveiled the "Mega" site ahead of a lavish gala and press conference at his New Zealand mansion on Sunday night, the anniversary of his arrest on racketeering charges related to his now-shuttered Megaupload file-sharing site. Megaupload, which Dotcom started in 2005, was one of the most popular sites on the Web until U.S. prosecutors shut it down, accusing Dotcom and several company officials of facilitating millions of illegal downloads.

In Dotcom's typical grandiose style, the launch party featured a tongue-in-cheek re-enactment of the dramatic raid on his home a year earlier, when New Zealand police swooped down in helicopters onto the mansion grounds and nabbed him in a safe room where he was hiding.

"Mega is going to be huge, and nothing will stop Mega — whoo!" a gleeful Dotcom bellowed from a giant stage set up in his yard, seconds before a helicopter roared overhead and faux police agents rappelled down the side of his mansion. Dotcom eventually ordered everyone to "stop this madness!" before breaking out into a dance alongside miniskirt-clad "guards" as music boomed.

Bravado aside, interest in the site was certainly high. Dotcom said half a million users registered for Mega in its first 14 hours.

U.S. authorities are trying to extradite the German-born Internet tycoon from New Zealand, where he is free on bail. Prosecutors say Dotcom made tens of millions of dollars while filmmakers and songwriters lost around $500 million in copyright revenue.

Dotcom argues that he can't be held responsible for copyright infringement committed by others, and insists Megaupload complied with copyrights by removing links to pirated material when asked.

"Our company and assets were taken away from us without a hearing," Dotcom said. "The privacy of our users was intruded on, communications were taken offline and free speech was attacked. Let me be clear to those who use copyright law as a weapon to drown innovation and stifle competition: You will be left on the side of the road of history."

Mega, like Megaupload, allows users to store and share large files. It offers 50 gigabytes of free storage, much more than similar sites such as Dropbox and Google Drive, and features a drag-and-drop upload tool.

The key difference is an encryption and decryption feature for data transfers that Dotcom says will protect him from the legal drama that has entangled Megaupload and threatened to put him behind bars.

The decryption keys for uploaded files are held by the users, not Mega, which means the company can't see what's in the files being shared. Dotcom argues that Mega — which bills itself as "the privacy company" — therefore can't be held liable for content it cannot see.

"What he's trying to do is give himself a second-string argument: `Even if I was wrong before, this one's all right because how can I control something if I don't know that it's there?'" said Sydney attorney Charles Alexander, who specializes in intellectual property law. "I can understand the argument; whether it would be successful or not is another matter."

To Dotcom, the concept is very simple.

"If someone sends something illegal in an envelope through your postal service," he says, "you don't shut down the post office."

U.S. prosecutors declined to comment on the new site, referring only to a court document that cites several promises Dotcom made while seeking bail that he would not — and could not — start a Megaupload-style business until the criminal case was resolved.

"I can assure the Court that I have no intention and there is no risk of my reactivating the Megaupload.com website or establishing a similar Internet-based business during the period until the resolution of the extradition proceedings," Dotcom said in a Feb. 15, 2012, affidavit.

The Motion Picture Association of America, which filed complaints about alleged copyright infringement by Megaupload, was not impressed.

"We are still reviewing how this new project will operate, but we do know that Kim Dotcom has built his career and his fortune on stealing creative works," the MPAA said in a statement. "We'll reserve final judgment until we have a chance to take a closer look, but given Kim Dotcom's history of damaging the consumer experience by pushing stolen, illegitimate content into the marketplace, count us as skeptical."

Still, as much as Dotcom's new venture might enrage prosecutors and entertainment executives, it shouldn't have any impact on the Megaupload case.

"All it might do is annoy them enough to say, `We're going to redouble our efforts in prosecuting them'," said Alexander, the attorney. "But I don't think it makes any practical difference to the outcome."

Dotcom denied the new site was designed to provoke authorities, but got in plenty of digs at their expense, saying that their campaign to shutter Megaupload simply forced him to create a new and improved site.

"Sometimes good things come out of terrible events," Dotcom said. "For example, if it wasn't for a giant comet hitting earth, we would still be surrounded by angry dinosaurs — hungry, too. If it wasn't for that iceberg, we wouldn't have a great Titanic movie which makes me cry every time I see it. And if it wasn't for the raid, we wouldn't have Mega."

Prince Harry continues to perform exceptionally well in his military career in Afghanistan, according to press reports.

In what is likely to change his reputation from a playboy to a military hero, Prince Harry killed a major Taliban leader in Afghanistan.

The fighter pilot, who is 28-years-old, unleashed a missile strike to eliminate the terrorist leader in late October, according to a British newspaper.

Prince Harry is proving to be very popular with his comrades in Helmand, Afghanistan, and has been given the nickname Big H.

An inside source told news reporters that "Big H is a legend. He was on patrol flying his Apache helicopter when it was called in for a special operation. We heard this voice coming on the radio and we knew it was Big H. They were following a Taliban leader who was at the commander level. The Apache then let off some Hellfire Missiles and a 30mm cannon and boom. It was Big H to the

end."

The Prince is a front seat passenger, which means he is the mission controller and operates the main weapons of the ship. The Apache pilot sitting in the back seat, is under the command of the mission controller and is responsible for operating the craft.

Apaches, also called "Mosquito" for its unique sound, helicopters are among the most sophisticated and deadly in the world and have terrorized the Taliban in the past five years, according to reports.
