Rizana Nafeek, a young nanny from Sri Lanka, was beheaded by sword this week in Saudi Arabia, punishment for allegedly killing a baby in 2007 when she was believed to be just 17. The execution has spurred international outcry, given Nafeek's age at the time of the incident and her limited access to a defense attorney. The beheading has also shined a light on the Arab kingdom's medieval system of punishment, which includes cutting the hands off thieves, executing women accused of adultery, and flogging men accused of being gay. Few details of Nafeek's execution have leaked from the country's tightly controlled media, but the interior ministry said her head was severed from her body in public in Dawadmy, a dusty suburb of the capital Riyadh. In modern times, women in saudi Arabia condemned to death were traditionally executed by gunfire, but in recent years they have routinely been beheaded, an historic form of execution ordered under sharia, or the Muslim religious law that governs the country. The death penalty is routinely allowed for criminals convicted of murder, rape, armed robbery, drug trafficking or drug use, and apostasy or the renunciation of the Islamic faith, according to human rights group Amnesty International. Some 82 executions were carried out in Saudi Arabia last year, according to Amnesty. It is unknown how many of them were women or carried out by sword, but the majority of the condemned were foreigners, like Nafeek. Beheadings in Saudi Arabia are governed by certain rules. They are conducted in public, typically in town squares or near prisons. The condemned, as well as the executioner, typically wear white. The convict is blindfolded, handcuffed and often given a sedative. A plastic tarp, several feet wide, is sometimes spread out around the convict to make cleaning up the blood and recovering her head easier. The heads of the condemned can sometimes roll several feet from the body, said Saudi Arabia's leading executioner in a rare 2003 interview with Saudi newspaper Arab News. "The criminal was tied and blindfolded. With one stroke of the sword I severed his head. It rolled meters away," said executioner Muhammad Saad al-Beshi, recalling his first beheading. Al-Beshi said he has executed as many as 10 people in one day, by sword and by bullet. "It depends what they ask me to use. Sometimes they ask me to use a sword and sometimes a gun. But most of the time I use the sword," he said. He said he keeps his sword razor sharp, and allows his children to help clean it. "People are amazed how fast it can separate the head from the body," he said. Executioners like Al-Beshi are trained professionals who also carry out amputations, severing the hands, feet and tongues, of convicted criminals. The executioner said it is not uncommon for spectators to pass out at a beheading. "There are many people who faint when they witness an execution. I don't know why they come and watch if they don't have the stomach for it," he said. The goal of the executions is to provide justice to the victims' families, said Brian Evans, director of the Amnesty's death penalty abolition campaign. As a result, a victim's family is allowed to call off the execution at the last minute. "There is always a dramatic moment where the victim's family has to give the OK, a thumbs up or thumbs down," said Evans. In this modern age, ppl are still been beheaded brutally with Swords? |

Two years ago, Shakeel Afridi was a government surgeon at a hospital in Pakistan's semiautonomous tribal belt and commanded a small army of caregivers. Today he stands stripped of his job and his freedom, and is poised to become the latest flashpoint between the U.S. and Pakistan, tenuous allies at best. Afridi, 48, was arrested in Khyber district just weeks after U.S. Navy SEALs found and killed Osama bin Laden in the Pakistani garrison city of Abbottabad last year in May — an operation that Afridi assisted by running an unauthorized hepatitis-B vaccination campaign to trace bin Laden through DNA samples of his children. Soon after, Pakistani court documents state, Afridi was "handed over to an intelligence agency," presumably the Inter-Services Intelligence Directorate (I.S.I.). In October, he was presented before the high-powered Abbottabad Commission, which includes a Supreme Court justice and a retired Army general, which had also recommended a treason trial for him. Within a week of that appearance, Afridi's worldly possessions were confiscated and he was sacked from his government job, along with others who had reportedly helped him. He was in custody for almost a year until a local court took up his case last month. Authorities in Mexico are investigating the deaths of four people reportedly killed by a pack of dogs in a park. The bodies of the victims, including a mother and her baby, were covered in what appeared to be bite marks, and police found their belongings nearby. At least 25 dogs living in Cerro de la Estrella, a hilly woodland in eastern Mexico City, have been rounded up by investigators. The number of stray dogs in the Mexican capital is estimated at about 120,000. Experts said the bite marks suggest that at least 10 dogs were involved in the attack. The detained dogs will undergo tests to verify the presence of human tissues in their mouths and intestines, authorities said. The deaths are believed to have happened between 29 December and 5 January. The large population of stray dogs has long been a problem in Mexico City, correspondents say. A 2008 study said that there were more than three million of them living on the streets, but a more recent estimate by the capital's authorities suggested the 120,000 figure. This is roughly equivalent to the number of dogs collected from the streets of the UK in 2011. Source: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-20944664 |
Italian archaeologists have unearthed tombs in the southern Egyptian city of Luxor that are more than 3,000 years old. Egypt's antiquities ministry says the tombs were found under the mortuary temple of the Pharoah Amenhotep II, who reigned from 1427 BC to 1401 BC. The temple is located on the western bank of the River Nile. The ministry said remains of wooden sarcophaguses and human bones were found inside the tombs. Jars used to preserve the liver, lungs, stomach and intestines of the deceased were also found, decorated with images of the four sons of the god Horus. The figures - which have the heads of a human, a baboon, a jackal and a falcon - were believed to help the soul find its way to heaven. Wafaa Elsaddik, a professor of Egyptology, told the BBC the find was significant because it showed that temples were not just used for worship, but for burial as well. She said the jars were of very good quality which suggested that the tombs had belonged to wealthy people. Source: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-20978824 |

(Newser) – There’s irony, and then there’s the story of Fagilyu Mukhametzyanov, a 49-year-old Russian woman who woke up at her own funeral only to have a heart attack and die when she realized what was going on. Mukhametzyanov had been falsely declared dead after collapsing with chest pains, the Daily Mail reports. When she awoke, she was lying in a coffin, with mourners filing past and saying prayers. She screamed, and passed out again. “Her eyes fluttered, and we immediately rushed her back to the hospital,” her husband says. “But she only lived for another 12 minutes in intensive care before she died again, this time for good.” The hospital says it’s investigating the incident. “I am very angry, and I want answers,” the husband says. “She wasn’t dead when they said she was and they could have saved her.” source: http://www.newser.com/story/121844/woman-wakes-up-at-own-funeral-dies-of-shock.html Fellow Nlers what would u do if you were the woman's husband honestly |

You get to spend less on transportation if you use the metro.Thank you so much for this wonderful contribution. I would want to concentrate in Dubai and with a 5K USD budget what other places do u recommend and what tricks to get cheaper rebates while in Dubai. As for the Nigerians to be avoided- what is the risk of association with country brothers over there. |
