PoliticsProjects: Lagos To Link Sangotedo With Ito-omu Creek by ineri(op): 7:40pm On Jun 08, 2024
Lagos State Government has embarked on a road and bridge project which will link Sangotedo in Eti Osa with Ito-Omu creek in Ibeju Lekki and Epe.

The Special Adviser to Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Infrastructure, Mr Olufemi Daramola, gave the assurance on Saturday, during an inspection of some projects across the state.

” Today, we are at the Omu Creek Road which is one of the strategic projects that is ongoing.

“It is a road of about five kilometres and about 600 metres bridge.

” It is about 1.1 kilometres from the Lekki-Epe Express Road. What we have witnessed today is really a big progress, there has been a lot of soil reclamation, a lot of soil replacement has gone on.

” We will be able to get to the point where the bridge work will start, a lot of soil investigation is going on, the progress is very commendable,” he said.

The special adviser also inspected the Ketu Alapere Pedestrian Bridge reconstruction.

Daramola said that the project would be completed in few months.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the bridge, which was constructed 11 years ago, was damaged by impact of a container-laden truck which attempted to manoeuvre under the bridge.

“Reconstruction of the damaged Alapere Pedestrian Bridge is ongoing.

“There was a lot of work on the alignment. The Federal Government was working on the Third Mainland Bridge, and we had to synchronise the work.

” There is good progress, the foundation is done, the cast elements are all being set, the headroom will be improved, and in another couple of months – two, three months – I am sure that the project will be completed,” he said.

Daramola also said that the state government had embarked on rehabilitation of some link roads in the Ikoyi axis.

“The state government is also working on a network of roads in Ikoyi, Abayomi, MacPherson, Ilabere. Site visit shows that there is improvement.

“Contractors are on site, and we are having good milage.

” Some sets of roads were done in Ikoyi previously, and this set will add more connectivity. The progress of work is very commendable,” he said.

The special adviser said that the Ilabere Link Road, Ikoyi, project was 70 per cent completed.

” None of the roads has been completed because it is a network.

” In Lagos as a whole, there is quite a number of projects going on, we visit these sites from time to time.

” I can assure you in Alimosho we have ongoing projects such as Babafemi Daada, Abaranje Road. In Badagry, we have Hospital Road, Samuel Ekundayo Road. In Kosofe, we have St. Finbars Road, and all the contractors are on site.

” The governor has given us support maximally, you will see more progress,” Daramola said.

SportsIheanacho Leaves Leicester City As Free Agent After Seven Years by ineri(op): 5:05pm On Jun 08, 2024
Leicester City has confirmed the exit of Kelechi Iheanacho from the club after seven years. The club announced the departure of the Nigerian in a statement on its website on Friday.

The 27-year-old was released by the Foxes following the expiration of his contract.

The Midland club also added that talks are still ongoing with Wilfred Ndidi to extend his stay at the Kings Power stadium.

Iheanacho joined Leicester from Manchester City in 2017 on a five-year deal. He then signed an improved three-year contract with the club in 2021.

“Also leaving Filbert Way is Kelechi Iheanacho, bringing to an end his seven-year stint in the East Midlands,” the statement reads.

“Signing from Manchester City in August 2017, the popular forward has scored 61 goals in Leicester colours, including the winner against his former club in the FA Community Shield final at Wembley in August 2021.”

Iheanacho’s most productive season with the Foxes was the 2020/21 campaign, when he scored 19 goals in 39 matches. He also scooped one English Premier League (EPL) player of the month that season.

He also played an integral role in Leicester City’s FA Cup success in 2021, including scoring the winner in the semi-final against Southampton.

Iheanacho was released alongside Marc Albrighton and Dennis Praet.

PoliticsMinimum Wage: Labour Knocks Govs For Rejecting N60,000 by ineri(op): 4:51pm On Jun 08, 2024
Members of the organised labour comprising both the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), on Saturday, carpeted the 36 governors for saying they couldn’t afford N60,000 minimum wage.

The two labour leaders described the governors’ comment and actions towards the Nigerian workers as act of wickedness, while calling on them to have a rethink before “danger ahead explodes”.

Daily Trust reports that the governors through the Director Media and Public Affairs of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), Hajiya Halimah Salihu Ahmed, disclosed on Friday that they couldn’t afford N60,000 that was proposed by the federal government.

But reacting to the governors’ action, the organised labour, through the Head of Information and Public Affairs at the NLC headquarters, Benson Upah, wondered why governors forget that the price of fuel, dollar against Naira among other things have gone up astronomically.

“We are alarmed by the statement credited to the Nigeria Governors Forum that state governments cannot even afford to pay N60,000 as minimum wage as ‘a few states will end up borrowing to pay workers every month’.

“We do believe the governors have acted in bad faith. It is unheard of for such a statement be issued to the world in the middle of an ongoing negotiation. It is certainly in bad taste,” Upah said in a statement.

Speaking on the governors’ claim, the two labour centres said nothing can be further from the truth that FAAC allocations have since moved from “N700 billion to N1.2 trillion making the governments extremely rich at the expense of the people.”

According to them, “All that the governors need to do to be able to pay a reasonable national minimum wage (not even the N60,000) is cut on the high cost of governance, minimise corruption as well as prioritise the welfare of workers.

“It is important to explain here that a national minimum wage is not synonymous with the different pay structures of different states. The national minimum wage is the lowest floor below which no employer is allowed to pay.

“The aim is to protect the weak and the poor. We are not fixated with figures but value. Those who argue that moving the national minimum wage from N30,000 to N60,000 is sufficiently good enough miss the point.

“In 2019, when N30,000 became the minimum, N300 exchanged for $1 (effectively making the minimum wage an equivalent of $100 or thereabout) while inflation rate was 11.40.

“At the moment the exchange rate is at N1,600 to $1 while inflation hovers at 33.7% (40% for food). This puts the value of the minimum wage at $37.5 for a family of six. This is happening at a time costs of everything rose by more than 400% as a result of the removal of fuel subsidy.

“This is an extreme bad news for the poor. Government’s policies of fuel subsidy removal, mindless devaluation of the Naira, energy tariff hike by 250% and interest rate hike by 26.5% will continue to hurt the economy (especially manufacturing sector) and the poor.

“Already manifest is the mass incapacity of Nigerians leading to overflowing warehouses of the productive sector of the economy. The downward trend will continue except the capacity of workers and businesses is enhanced.

“Paying a miserable national minimum wage portends grave danger to not only the workforce but the national economy as in truth, economies of most states are driven by workers wages.

“In light of this, we urge the governors to do a re-think and save the country from a certain death.”
