Politics*senate’s Resolution On Edo Assembly Unconstitutional, Flagrant Disregard For Pr by infogistcorner(op): 4:43pm On Jul 30, 2019
*Senate’s Resolution on Edo Assembly unconstitutional, flagrant disregard for Principle of Separation of powers – Edo Govt*

*_…says illegality will not stand, counsels that resolution could set state ablaze_*

The Edo State Government has described as unconstitutional and a flagrant disregard for the Principle of Separation of Powers, the resolution of the Senate directing the Governor of Edo State to issue a fresh proclamation for the inauguration of the Edo State House of Assembly.

In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie Esq., the state government declared that “this illegality will not stand” and advised “powerful persons not be allowed to set our State ablaze merely to satisfy their thirst for power and control.”

According to the statement: “The Edo State Government watched with alarm today as the distinguished Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in a step that was not totally unexpected, purported to pass a resolution in the following terms: - Directing the Governor of Edo State to issue a fresh proclamation for the inauguration of the Edo State House of Assembly, and Ordering a fresh inauguration of the Edo State House of Assembly within one (1) week from the date of the said Resolution.

“As earlier mentioned, this move was not unexpected in the light of the enormous political pressure which had been brought to bear on the Officers and Members of the distinguished Senate by the highly placed and powerful persons who are intent on foisting their will and choices on the good people of Edo State.

“This is borne out by the recorded statements made by one Seid Oshiomhole (a Member-elect and younger brother of the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress Comrade Adams Oshiomhole) wherein he boasted that both the Senate President, Senator Ahmed Lawan and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila have been instructed on what to do in this matter.”

The statement added: “The Government of Edo State wishes to observe that the Chairman and Members of Ad-Hoc Committee of the Senate which visited Edo State were made aware of the existence of at least three (3) suits pending before various Courts wherein the factual and legal dispute regarding the Edo State House of Assembly inauguration have been submitted to the Courts by both contending parties for resolution.”

Ogie noted that “The Ad-Hoc Committee also failed to inform the Senate of the existence of a valid injunction in Suit No FHC/B/OS/70/2019 wherein the Federal High Court restrained various parties from interfering in any manner with the activities of the Edo State House of Assembly which said order had been brought to their attention in the course of their visit to Edo State.

He maintained that: “In point of fact in Suit No. FHC/PH/CS/159/2019 the National Assembly, the Clerk of National Assembly, the President of the Senate and Speaker of House of Representatives amongst others were specifically ordered by the Federal High Court to maintain the Status Quo as at 25th July, 2019.

“The Edo State Government is further aware that in suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/815/2019, wherein the Clerk and the National Assembly are defendants before the Federal High Court in Abuja, the National Assembly and the Clerk have not only been duly served with the processes but have entered appearance in the matter.

“It is unfortunate that the Distinguished Senate would act in flagrant breach of these various Court Orders and purport to come to factual and legal conclusions concerning a matter in which the parties are already before the Courts and therefore subjudice.

“We are also concerned that the Members of the Distinguished Senate appear to have very scant regard for the principle of separation of powers as enshrined in our Constitution which is manifested by their taking over the functions of the Judiciary in dispute resolution and giving directives to a Governor of a State who is certainly not subject to the supervision of the National Assembly.

“The Edo State Government maintains that there is nowhere in the Constitution particularly Section 11(4) which enables the National Assembly to “take over” any House of Assembly or in this respect, the Edo State House of Assembly.”

The SSG added that “It must be further observed that it has always been the contention of the Edo State Government that the power to issue a proclamation for the inauguration of a House of Assembly as set out in Section 105(3) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria was duly and completely complied with and it is not within the power of the Governor to recall same once issued or to perform the same act multiple times. Once the Governor issues a proclamation letter, his job is done.

“It is the duty of the Clerk of the House of Assembly to inaugurate the House of Assembly and he has since performed that task. He has further approached a Court of law to seek a validation of his actions. The pronouncements of the Distinguished Senate on the subject (with respect) is clearly misconceived and would amount to interference in the role of the Courts which may in fact constitute contempt with which the Governor would not wish to be associated.

“The Government of Edo State firmly believes that our State is not a colony or a vassal of any person or persons exercising power in Abuja and we shall take all necessary steps within the ambit of the law to defend and validate our position and actions on this matter.

“We call on all persons of goodwill to call the powerful wielders of “power and authority” in Abuja and elsewhere to refrain from acts which are clearly unconstitutional, undemocratic and a flagrant disrespect for the principle of due process and separation of powers.

“These powerful persons should not be allowed to set our State ablaze merely to satisfy their thirst for power and control. As we have always maintained on this subject: - This illegality will not stand!!!”
PoliticsHouse Of Reps Lacks Constitutional Powers To Shut Down Edo Assembly – Edo Govt* by infogistcorner(op): 2:38pm On Jul 18, 2019
*House of Reps lacks Constitutional Powers to shut down Edo Assembly – Edo Govt*

*_…we’ll not comment on a matter before competent court_*

The Edo State Government has said that the House of Representatives lacks the Constitutional powers to shut down the Edo State House of Assembly.

The state government’s statement is a response to the purported orders made on July 17, by the House of Representatives to the Inspector-General of Police and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) to seal off Edo House of Assembly until a proper inauguration is done, amongst others.

In a statement issued in Benin City, Secretary to Edo State Government, Osarodion Ogie Esq., maintained that  “there is nowhere in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, where the House of Representatives or even the National Assembly for that matter, is granted the right or power to shut down a State House of Assembly,” adding that “in point of fact such power is expressly excluded by the Constitution.”

Ogie said: “It has come to the attention of the Government of Edo State that the House of Representatives at its sitting on 17th July, 2019 purported to issue certain orders regarding the status and activities of the Edo State House of Assembly.

“Amongst others, it: Directed His Excellency, The Governor of Edo State to ‘issue a fresh proclamation for the inauguration of the House of Assembly’ and ordered the Inspector General of Police to shut down the premises of the Edo State House of Assembly and purported to make further orders in this regard.”

According to the SSG, “The Government and people of Edo State are appalled and disappointed at the gross illegality and abuse of process by the House of Representatives.”

He explained: “It must first of all be pointed out that the emergency supervisory powers over the activities of State Houses of Assembly which are contained in Section 11 of the Constitution of our Republic are expressly donated to “The National Assembly” and not one individual arm of it.

He added that “These powers certainly do not extend to issuing directives to a duly elected State Governor to unlawfully repeat an act which has already been fully carried out in line with the Constitution.

“It has further not been alleged or concluded by anyone that the Edo State House of Assembly is unable to sit. In fact, whenever the ‘self-exiled’ members-elect so choose, they can join their colleagues in plenary in Benin City.

“It is also instructive to note that while the members of the House of Representatives were busy in Abuja issuing their unlawful and unconstitutional orders, the fact-finding delegation of the Distinguished Senate (the upper arm of the National Assembly) was in Benin meeting with Stakeholders with a view to fashioning a road map to peace in our land.”

Ogie noted that “Students of history will recall that the crises in the Western Region Parliament in the 1960s which triggered a conflagration that eventually engulfed the entire nation, was precipitated by a similar attempt to use ‘Federal might’ to muscle, intimidate and overwhelm the functionaries of a Federating unit outside the due process of law.

“Since the situation in the Edo State House of Assembly is a matter currently pending before two (2) Courts of competent jurisdiction, the Government of Edo State would not follow the contemptuous example of those who are currently commenting, adjudicating upon and giving directives on matters currently being litigated upon.”

He emphasised “Suffice it to say however that there is nowhere in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, where the House of Representatives or even the National Assembly for that matter, is granted the right or power to shut down a State House of Assembly, in point of fact such power is expressly excluded by the Constitution.”

The state government advised “those interested parties who sit in positions of authority in Abuja and are using their offices to influence the House of Representatives to take note that we all ultimately owe a debt of accountability to the good people of Edo State for our actions.

“We are certain that the Inspector General of Police, being a law-abiding Government Functionary will not act in disobedience to the Order of a Federal High Court in Benin, validly issue and served upon him restraining him from doing exactly what the House of Representatives now purport to direct him to do, which is to shut down the Edo State House of Assembly.

“Both sides of this dispute are currently before the Court and we are shocked that the House of Representatives could allow itself to be made to act in breach of its own Rules which forbid it from entertaining or making pronouncements on matters before Courts.”

Edo government acknowledged its respect for the National Assembly, but noted that “we live in a nation governed by laws, where no single individual or group is permitted to utilise its privileged position to oppress and intimidate the people of an entire State.

“The Government does not intend to comment on the details of this House of Assembly dispute as same are clearly sub judice, but will ask all concerned to tread with caution so as not to precipitate crises simply in pursuit of selfish agenda.”

Ogie added: “We must state that the final verdict in this matter will ultimately be rendered by the good people of Edo State, for whose benefit Government exists. We are certain therefore that this illegality will not stand.”
Politics*‘why Obaseki Needs A 2nd Term’* by infogistcorner(op): 2:57pm On Mar 19, 2019
*‘Why Obaseki needs a 2nd term’*

AS the race for governorship election in Edo state which would hold next year begins, a legal practitioner and public notary, Olayiwola Afolabi yesterday said that Edo state governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki deserves a second term to enable him to continue the developmental work he has started.

Speaking to journalists in Benin City yesterday, he urged the All Progressives Congress to give “the performing governor” a second term so that he will complete the works he has started.

He said: “The Ambode style cannot apply in Edo State because Obaseki is working. The man has worked and he is working everywhere even during the elections work did not stop. During the presidential election, National Assembly election and state assembly election he kept working. He is working everywhere so Ambode pattern cannot apply in Edo state.

“The man is not making noise but he is working everywhere. If he says he is not going to contest, we are going to beg him because we need him, if he says he doesn’t want, we will compel him. “He has been able to prove that development is possible. His style is unique from what we are used to and that is why Edo people and residents here believe that he deserves a second term as governor of Edo state”

Politics*osinbajo, Obaseki, Kachikwu Task Youths To Drive Inclusive Devt With South-sout by infogistcorner(op): 3:27pm On Jan 20, 2019
*Osinbajo, Obaseki, Kachikwu task youths to drive inclusive devt with South-South Innovation Hub*

Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has urged youths to imbibe the virtues of diligence and hard work, noting that the South-South Innovation Hub presents opportunities to contribute to societal growth through innovation.

Prof. Osinbajo gave the admonition at the Edo Youth Leadership Summit 2019, tagged Imagine, which held at SIO Event Center, in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki also called on youth to be productive and take charge in defining a new narrative for development through the use of technology as provided for in the Edo Innovation Hub, which houses the South-South Innovation Hub.

Speaking on the need for youths to be innovative and diligent, Osinbajo said the path to failure and success are the same across the globe, urging participants at the event to be of good character, work hard and be committed to legitimate dreams.

"No matter how talented and well-connected or your status or the wealth of your parents, you will soon discover that the difference between failure and success is character, hard work and diligence, which are all you need to achieve success in life," the vice president added.

Osinbajo noted that these are fundamental principles of success as lack thereof makes it extremely difficult to succeed in life.

He commended the organisers of the Summit, noting that participants must ensure they put into practice the lessons from the Summit to make headway in life.

Governor Obaseki on his part, reiterated the need for integrity, transparency and hard work to succeed.

"Life is about certain core values and if you don't have such values you will be limited in life. As a government, we want to refer to the values of transparency, integrity and hard work as no system will survive without these core values."

Obaseki thanked the Vice President for setting up the South-South Innovation Hub, as it has helped transform the lives of the youths in the state.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, said the focus of the President Muhammadu Buhari led-administration is to reduce corruption in the country.

He said the Federal Government has shown that political position is for service and not for self agrandisement.

Politics*president Buhari Campaigns In Benin, Assures EFCC, ICPC To Release Fg’s Plans F by infogistcorner(op): 5:41am On Jan 18, 2019
*President Buhari campaigns in Benin, assures EFCC, ICPC to release FG’s plans for recovered loots*

*…Obaseki reveals how PDP’s demand for $20 million bribe almost scuttled Edo-Azura Power Project*

President Muhammadu Buhari has assured that he will continue to work for the interest of ordinary Nigerians, urging them to vote for him in the presidential elections on February 16, so he can continue to deliver on the pledge to fight corruption, revitalize the economy and improve security, which are the cardinal policy thrusts of his administration.

The President said this at the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Rally in Edo State, which held at Garrick Memorial School, in Ekehuan Road, Benin City, the state capital.

He assured that he will get the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to make public how much money has been recovered and what government intends to do with it.

“We are doing our best in fighting corruption. I assure you that very soon, I will instruct the EFCC and the ICPC to address a joint press conference to tell Nigerians what has been recovered and what we will do with the recovered funds,” he said.

The President was accompanied to the venue of the rally by Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki; National Chairman of the APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole; Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode; Minister of Transport, Hon. Rotimi Amaechi; Minister of State for Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire and other party leaders across the nation.

Buhari said he is in the state to remind Edo people of the fundamental promises made in 2015, relaying what his administration has achieved in the areas of security, agriculture and the fight against corruption.

“We have made the North-East safer than we met it. We have given soft loans to farmers to enable the nation to attain food security. We have saved a lot of money in dollars by not importing.

“Please vote APC from top to bottom for the party to occupy the States’ Houses of Assembly; National Assembly and the Presidency," he urged.

Governor Obaseki said that the progress being recorded in the state was made possible by the President’s support.

He said, “In Edo, when you see a masquerade dancing very well, you must know that somebody is beating the drum that is making it dance. Are we dancing well in Edo? Is your governor doing well? Are we paying salaries? Are we paying pensions? Are we training our teachers?

“Are we building our industrial park? Are we going to build a River Port? The drummer who is making all of these happen is here today. He is our president, President Muhammadu Buhari. There is nothing I could have done in the last two years without President Buhari,” he added.

Noting that the President came to the rescue of the state when the previous government almost scuttled the plan to build the Edo-Azura Power Plant, he said, “The president has done what we expected him to do. He has given us direction. I said to him, remember when you resumed office, within 60 days, former Governor Oshiomhole came to you and said you should help us with Azura Power Plant. He asked the President to give us a letter so that we can raise money to build that power Plant. The people before them refused to give us that letter. They were demanding for $20 million bribe, which we did not have.”

National Chairman of APC, Comrade Oshiomhole commended the President on his support for the state and the governor, noting that the president’s efforts helped in paying off debts incurred by the previous administration.

Hailing the President for his social investment programmes, he said “There are things that you have done that has shown where your heart is. Your constituency is the masses, which is why you created the social investment programme, which includes the Home-Grown School Feeding Programme, Conditional Cash Transfer, N-Power and MarketMoni.”

He said he was proud of Governor Obaseki for improving on what was done in his time as a governor, noting that the governor has added value to governance.

Earlier, Governor Obaseki led other members of the State’s Executive Council in receiving the President at the Benin Airport, at 3.05pm. The President was on board the presidential aircraft marked 5N-FGN.

After arriving the Airport, the President was driven to the Palace of the Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, where he went to pay homage to the revered monarch.

In anticipation of the President’s arrival, a mammoth crowd had besieged the Benin Airport by noon on Thursday, to receive the President for the state’s leg of his re-election campaign.

Members of the ruling APC from different parts of the state as well as the party’s supporters were colourfully dressed to receive the country’s number one citizen at the Airport.

Chairman, Buhari Supporters Organization, Arewa Chapter, Edo State, Abdullah Baba, said the president’s visit to the state is a welcome development.

Baba said the organization was at the Airport to receive him because of his developmental strides across the country.

*Abuja meeting over Justice Onnoghen was a PDP Governors’ Meeting*

The Abuja meeting of governors of Delta, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom and Bayelsa states, on the corruption trial of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen, was a meeting of governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and not a meeting of South-South governors.

Chairman of the Edo State chapter of the PDP, Chief Dan Orbih is economical with the truth and most uncharitable to the personality of Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, with his unnecessary attacks on the Edo State Governor.

Chief Orbih should tell Edo people the last time the South-South Governors’ meeting was held, how many times the meeting was held in 2018 and its agenda for 2019.

Governor Obaseki is committed to the wellbeing of Edo people and our brothers and sisters in our sister South-South states and all Nigerians, and will support any meeting, devoid of political colouration, that genuinely seeks to improve the welfare of people of the south-south region and elsewhere in the country.

Obaseki will not attend a PDP Governors’ meeting like the one held in Abuja last Sunday, but will attend meetings that are not politically-tainted, and called to proffer time-tested solutions to the developmental challenges faced by the millions of Edo and other people of the south-south region.

Politics*A Stranded Edo PDP And The Resort To Falsehood As Campaign Strategy* by infogistcorner(op): 9:35pm On Jan 13, 2019
*A stranded Edo PDP and the resort to falsehood as campaign strategy*

The Dan Orbih-led campaign train of the failed Edo People's Democratic Party (PDP) has resorted to falsehood, the latest being a non-existing N7billion travel allowance in the 2019 Budget of Edo State.

The Edo State 2019 Budget is a public document and there is no such provision from page one to the last, of the document.

To sink so low and input items that do not exist into a public document, amounts to crossing the line.

With Governor Obaseki's achievements in the last two years, Edo people can tell who 'ate their yams' and who is frugally applying our resources on impactful projects such as road infrastructure, health centres, the education of our children and the security of our people and our property, to mention only a few.

Our latest proof of superior management ability is the promotion of Bendel Insurance to the elite soccer league in Nigeria, an achievement that all Edo sons and daughters, irrespective of their political convictions have hailed the Obaseki administration for.

Just like in soccer, everything the Edo PDP ruined, Obaseki is, with his midas touch bringing back to life.

We understand the frustration in trying to sell a party notorious for looting public funds, but telling lies and propagating falsehoods at campaign grounds will not help the difficult position that the Edo PDP has put itself.

The eight years of PDP leadership in Edo remain our dark ages, and all Edo people know that so well. No lies by Dan Orbi and his co-travellers can change that because Edo people are too intelligent to be swayed so cheaply.

Obaseki is retelling our developmental story as a state with roads that are springing up daily, everywhere in the three senatorial districts, health centres, job creation and empowerment opportunities, improved education etc.

Politics*edo Govt. Seeks More Empowerment Opportunities For Women* by infogistcorner(op): 2:05pm On Jan 12, 2019
*Edo Govt. seeks more empowerment opportunities for women*

Edo State government has partnered with non-governmental organisations to explore ways of empowering women so that they can contribute more to the development of their immediate and extended communities.

Speaking at a one-day conference on women empowerment in Benin City, the state capital, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Mrs Magdalene Ohenhen stressed that “no nation can make progress without creating opportunities for women to be educated and empowered.

The one-day conference entitled “Restoring the Lost Dignity of Womanhood,” held at Imaguero Secondary School in Benin City, in collaboration with Agape for All Nations International (AFANI).

Mrs Ohenhen explained that when women are empowered, they would contribute more to the nation's development.

“The empowerment conference is apt especially in the face of current daunting socio-economic challenges affecting the progress of women.

"We are continually driving the crusade for women empowerment, creating awareness on health issues and the need for women to go for periodic medical screening,” the commissioner said.

Mrs Elizabeth Omokha, Founder of AFANI, said the organisation is a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) dedicated to the safety and empowerment of women.

Omokha said: “We provide outreach services, education, support, information and advocacy for women.”

She urged the women at the event to key into programmes that would improve their standards of living as well as boost their businesses.

Mrs Heather Onoh, CEO, Smarter Grid International, said her organisation is collaborating with the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development to train rural women on how to install solar equipment.

The well attended event drew participants from all sectors of the state.

*Obaseki gives BEDC 7-day ultimatum to restore power or risk shutdown of Benin offices*

*… GSTC set to reopen in September with 1,500 students*

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has asked the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) to restore power supply to consumers in the state or risk shutdown of its offices in the state.

The governor gave the ultimatum as he concluded the ward-to-ward campaign in Egor Local Government Area, where he urged voters in the area to support candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2019 general elections.

At Ward 9, the governor said N500 million has been set aside in the 2019 budget to construct an entertainment park and waterworks, urging residents in the ward to support APC candidates to represent them at the state and federal levels.

He said: “We have awarded the contracts for the repair of the failed portions of Okhoro Road and the contractor who went on holiday has resumed work with the promise to start work next week.”

The governor decried how the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) has continued to frustrate his efforts to ensure the people of the state get stable electricity to power their businesses, noting, “BEDC has continued to put us in darkness in the state and we will give them seven days to restore electricity or else we will shut their office down in the state.”

He described Ward 10 as a special ward that has several federal and state institutions, and said that his administration has completed the design of Technical College Road and the contract awarded.

“I have also asked the contractor to rehabilitate Adolor College Road and in two weeks’ time, contractors will commence work,” he assured.

The governor noted that the rehabilitation work on Adolor College Road has become important because over N300 million has been spent so far in revamping the Government Science Technical College (GSTC) which will be reopened for academic activities in September 2019 with 1,500 students.

“Due to the work we are doing at the College, the Minister of Power has promised to give us a direct line from Ihovbor Power Plant to help light up the state. Officials of Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) are already in the state preparing the ground to bring power and to enable the people enjoy 24/7 electricity,” he added.

At Ward 6, he assured the electorates that the contractor handling the Textile Mill Road project is set to return to site.

“In the next few weeks, work will commence on the road; the contractor will come to site. I am here to tell you that this year’s election will be different. We want to do it unit-by-unit because votes are cast at the unit level.

At Ward 8, Obaseki urged the youths to take advantage of their proximity to the GSTC, enrol for programmes in the school and learn technical skills, which will equip them to become self-reliant.

*Edo PDP: Leave Obaseki out of your campaign of slander – Gov’s aide*

The Edo State Government has warned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to leave Governor Godwin Obaseki out of their ‘predictable and cheap smear campaign,’ urging them to focus on the weighty issues that impact on the lives of the people.

In a statement by Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr. Crusoe Osagie, the state government cautioned the PDP to, as a matter of civic duty, tell the people what they intend to do for them and not drag the hardworking governor into their smear campaigns.

According to the governor’s aide, “It is not hard to see that the PDP has been undone by the fact that they are faced with a purposeful, well-run and transparent government. Hence, they have gone to town with a fictitious story about a non-existent fraud allegation in government that exists only in their imagination. For the records, we make bold to say that the alleged fraud does not exist.”

He said that, as a government whose programme is anchored on the development of the state and its people, Governor Obaseki’s administration has the mandate to run an issues-based campaign during this season and keep the people abreast of the numerous developmental programmes that directly impact on their lives.

He added, “But as is their stock in trade, the PDP is making spurious allegations about a non-existent fraud, showcasing once again a lack of understanding of governance.

“The records are there to show what the Governor Obaseki-led government has done and continues to do for the people of Edo state, from job creation to infrastructural development, investment promotion and industrialisation, which all residents in the state can readily testify to, in the governor’s efforts at repositioning the state for prosperity. That is what we are campaigning with this season.”

The governor’s aide advised the opposition to emulate the All Progressives Congress’ (APC) issues-based campaign and desist from the campaign of bile and bitterness.

*2019: Nigeria needs lawmakers sensitive to positive change - Idahosa*

A candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Dennis Idahosa, says Nigeria needs. members of the National Assembly that are not selfish but sensitive to positive change.

Idahosa, who is the 2019 APC candidate for Ovia Federal Constituency, Edo, said this while addressing newsmen in Benin on Sunday.

He said it was the only way that the constant power-play between the executive and the NASS could be brought to the barest minimum.

This, he said, would ensure a harmonious working relationship between the two arms of government.

He described as unfortunate, a situation where members of the NASS who were elected to represent their common interests, ended up representing their personal interests.

The APC candidate noted that this situation had not only contributed to the non development of their constituencies, but had, in no small means, affected the overall development of the country in general.

He, therefore, appealed to the people to ensure that they did not only vote in credible candidates, but those with “strong character” that could attract positive development to their areas.

“It is time we (the people) get it right by voting in people who will truly represent us and not themselves and the only way we can get it right is to “shine our eyes”.

“When we have the right people at the NASS, it will not only impact positively on us as a people, but the country will be better for it.

“We should understand by now that the constant fight that characterise the present NASS and the executive is because some persons are pushing for their personal interests.

“These fights disturb the smooth flow of governance at the federal level, as well as affects the positive development of their constituency,” he said. (NAN)

*‘I’m the Credible Alternative My People Want’ - Idahosa*

*Flag bearer of the All Progressives Congress in Ovia Federal Constituency of Edo State, Dennis Idahosa, who is a former a member of the state executive council fields questions from Adibe Emenyonu on his priorities in politics which include human capital development*

*Q: You have flagged off your campaigns. How has it been?*

It has been wholesome. I am facing a lot of challenges because the election in Nigeria is expensive. God has helped us to reach a lot of families in my constituency. I have been able to put smiles on people’s faces. We have been able to overcome our challenges and we are gaining more momentum. I believe God has a hand in this project.

*Q: Okada elders recently endorsed your candidacy. What does that mean to you owing to the fact that it is the stronghold of your opponent?*

I cherish the endorsement from Okada Odionwere and the elders in council. They were able to explain the reason I was endorsed to go to the National Assembly and replace their daughter. One was to be very active on the floor to attract a lot of development. The second one is to concentrate on human capital development and the third one is to be accessible to the electorates. In all of these, my opponent has failed. She has never moved any motion during plenary. She is not there when important issues are discussed. She has no respect for the people. My observation is that they are fed up with her. They made up their mind to vote her out of office. They have found the alternative they needed and they see me as the messiah in our constituency. I will not play politics of bitterness but I will concentrate on what will uplift the people. I pray that God brings an end to vote buying in this country so that the people can vote reliable persons into power.

*Q: Your campaign slogan is ‘liberation.’ Why did you choose it?*

It started in Okada, the hometown of my opponent. The people of Okada cried out to me that their land has been taken from them. They said they have no land to build houses anymore. They said they want to be liberated. I did a forensic analysis of their cries and I asked how the land grabbing came about in Okada. They explained to me and I found out that the father of my opponent has been unfair to the Okada people. I believe that God has brought me to liberate the people of Ovia and I will not rest until it is achieved.

*Q: How much support do you get from your party?*

The most important thing the party has done for me is to give me the ticket as its flag bearer. The leaders and youths have been very supportive. It is not about finance. It is the moral support that I need.

*Q: How much support do you get from your party?*

The most important thing the party has done for me is to give me the ticket as its flag bearer. The leaders and youths have been very supportive. It is not about finance. It is the moral support that I need.

*Q: Ovia constituency is made up of farmers…*

I have been able to work with various communities. I have reached out to farm camps in Ovia and I am working with the local and state government to meet up with their basic amenities. Grading of earth roads in many of the villages has commenced and it is being funded by the local government. The few camps in Okada axis I really worried about was when I saw how they are suffering. To me that was failure and we have been able to address their problems.

*Q: Are you not disturbed that the post primaries crisis may affect the APC?*

Not at all. In every primary, there are bound to be little crisis but the APC family has been able to address it. We are comfortable that we will win all available seats in Edo South senatorial district. In Ovia, we are getting 73 percent.

*Q: How would you tackle unemployment?*

The things I will do as a lawmaker is to focus on human capital development. There will be job opportunities for our youths. I will collaborate with both the state and local government and look at areas where opportunities are available. I am already collecting data of my supporters. I want to have a database so that after my victory, I do not need to collect their CVs anymore. I will have skills acquisition centres and support youths to learn skills. Soft loans will be made available to them after their training. The next one is women empowerment. My plan is to use 50 per cent of my salary as empowerment for the women. It will not be a loan but support for little businesses.

*Q: You are a successful businessman. Why venture into politics?*

As a businessman, I was able to support people but it was not enough to carry majority of the people’s challenges and I felt that venturing into politics would give the room for more opportunities to meet their need and empower a lot of people. I am so passionate about helping people because I prayed to God when I was 11 years to bless me so that I will be a blessing to my generation.

*Q: You worked with Oshiomhole and now Obaseki is in power. How do you compare both men?*

Oshiomhole is a great man and Obaseki is a wonderful man. Both of them brought the needed development to Edo. Oshiomhole is a fighter and he will do it openly. Obaseki is a silent fighter and he talks less but has vision and target for the people. Oshiomhole is one of the best governors we have seen before Obaseki.

Politics*obaseki Moves Against Bedc-induced Darkness In Edo With Ossiomo-ccetc 55MW Powe by infogistcorner(op): 6:55pm On Jan 02, 2019
*Obaseki moves against BEDC-induced darkness in Edo with Ossiomo-CCETC 55MW Power project*

*_…phase 1 to be commissioned in April_*

In a bold move to free Edo people and residents from the stranglehold of the inefficient Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) and undo the endless cycle of darkness foisted on electricity consumers in the state, Governor Godwin Obaseki on Wednesday, visited the 55 Megawatts CCETC-Ossiomo Power plant as the facility prepares to commence operation.

Addressing journalists after inspecting facilities and progress of work at the CCETC Clean Power/Ossiomo Power Plant, in Ologbo, near Benin City, Obaseki said the first phase of the project will be commissioned in April and would make more electricity available for distribution in the state.

He said the construction of transmission lines to deliver the power from the site to the city centre would soon commence, as the first set of equipment for the project would arrive from China in the first quarter of this year.

According to him, “We believe that before the end of the first quarter of the year, the first 5MW would be delivered to light up government offices and streets within the Sapele Road corridor of Benin City.”

He explained that “to ease distribution of the power, a substation would be set up around Kings Square, which would power streets in the city.”

The governor added: “We are concluding transaction to light up 200 Kilometres of our streets across the city. When the plant is completed, it will free up some electricity for the state. We believe that if the megawatts produced increase, the distribution company will have more power to distribute to other cities in the state.

"The ordinary Edo people will benefit from this power arrangement because there is an arrangement to drop power in certain processing centres where artisans can move into and do their businesses with the assurance of steady power supply.”

Director, CCETC Clean Energy/Ossiomo Power Plant, Dr. Uwa Igiehon, said the power plant is a joint venture between a Chinese Company, CCETC Clean Energy and Ossiomo Power to build a 55Megawatts plant in the state.

He said the power plant started in August 2018 and would be delivered in the next four to five months.

“We will be using natural gas from a 50-metre gas pipeline close to the site. The project will be in phases with the first phase of 5 megawatts to be delivered to the state government.”

The governor was also at the 1800-housing unit Emotan Gardens on Upper Sokponba Road, to see the extent of work at the estate.

The Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, has charged the Edo State Traffic Management Agency (EDSTMA) to step up its activities and rid major towns in the state of traffic congestion.

Obaseki who gave the charge in Benin City, noted that “with the influx of holiday-makers into major towns in the state, EDSTMA must deploy more personnel and equipment to arears notorious for traffic congestion.

“Many Edo people are home for the festive season and some of them came with their cars, increasing the number of vehicles on our roads.”

He added: “We have also received reports of the growing number of rough driving, by people who are drunk, this we must discourage.”

The governor assured that “with the ongoing reconstruction of bad roads across the state, driving is becoming pleasurable” and urged road users to place more premium on safety.

According to him, “Major parts of Benin City recorded heavy vehicular traffic days before Christmas with congestion at major intersections.

“Many people were stuck in traffic for hours. EDSTMA must be proactive in their planning, to ensure people do not suffer unnecessary hardship on the road as we go into the new year.”

The governor advised the traffic management agency to apply the necessary traffic laws to discourage rough driving across the state.

*Dennis Idahosa lauds Osinbajo’s performance at debate*

Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), for the Ovia Federal Constituency, Edo, Mr Dennis Idahosa, has hailed the performance of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, at the debate which held on Friday.

Newsmen report that Idahosa gave the commendation in an interview with newsmen in Benin on Saturday.

The debate which was between five vice presidential candidates of five political parties was organised by the Nigeria Election Debate Group (NEDG) and the Broadcasting Organization of Nigeria (BON).

Idahosa said Osinbajo was able to explain to Nigerians how the APC is taking Nigeria out of the doldrums it met it in 2015.

He said with the performance, the number two citizen has won more support for the APC ahead of the elections.

Idahosa accused Peter Obi, the vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) of not offering any solution to questions put to him. He said that the debate has made Nigerians understand the antics of the PDP.

According to him, “We have seen from the debate that the PDP has nothing to offer Nigerians except to return the country to the hands of looters.”

"There was no where the PDP Vice presidential candidate stated the party’s plan for the country but rather reeled out lies about the APC performance,” he said.

Other parties whose vice presidential candidates participated in the debate were the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN); Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN); and Young Progressives Party (YPP).

*…with spurs to Aifuwa St., Evboesi-Urherhue, Iguelaba communities*

The Edo State government has approved the contract for reconstruction of the 105.6-kilometre Benin-Abraka Road at the cost of twenty-one billion, two hundred and twenty-two million, six hundred and twenty-six thousand, six hundred and seventy-six naira, thirty-two kobo (N21,222,626,676.32).

The approval was given at the state’s weekly Executive Council (EXCO) meeting, presided over by Governor Godwin Obaseki, at Government House, Benin City, the state capital, on Wednesday.

According to Obaseki “the award of the contract is in fulfilment of my promise to reconstruct Benin-Abraka Road and bring to an end, the frustration and sufferings of Edo people that ply the road, daily. This project is the largest, longest and the most ambitious road project ever undertaken in Edo State.

“The road has been dilapidated for over forty years and what is worthy of note is our ingenuity in bringing stakeholders together to appreciate the need to execute this road project that affects the lives of well over a million people, through co-financing.

He explained that the 105.6-kilometer Benin-Abraka Road has spurs to Aifuwa Street; Evboesi-Urherhue and Iguelaba communities.

The governor noted that “the co-financing arrangement is contained in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) entered into by the Edo State Government, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and the Edo State Oil and Gas Producing Area Development Commission (EDSOGPADEC) with a financing ratio of 25%: 50%:25%.”

He further said: “Orhionmwon Local Government Area is a major oil and gas producing LGA and deserves smooth roads linking the various communities. We have very industrious people in the area, whose productivity had been hampered by the poor condition of the Benin-Abraka Road.

“This project will unleash the creative ability of people in Orhionmwon on the Edo economy by easing the troubles of commuting to and from communities in the area,” Obaseki added.

The governor said that a befitting auditorium would be built by the state government within the next twelve months to serve as venue for the Polytechnic's functions.

He noted, "I have seen that there is no hall where ceremonies like convocation can take place. So, I am committing that within the next twelve months, one will be built for the school as government has already made provisions for a perimeter fence for the institution in the 2019 budget."

The governor, who said he was impressed with the level of transformation achieved under the leadership of the Rector, Prof. Abiodun Falodun, pledged that the state government would support the institution to become a world-class institution.

*2019: Ex-agitators pledges monthly allowances for Dennis Idahosa*

Ex-Agitators from Edo, on Thursday in Benin, pledged to donate their monthly allowances to support the candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in Edo, in the 2019 general elections.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), "reports that the agitators under the aegis of Asawana for Denco, said in collaboration with the Ijaws, they would work to deliver Mr Patrick Obahiagbon for Senate and Mr Dennis Idahosa, for the House of Representatives.

The agitators made this pronouncement at the annual meeting of the group which had in attendance over 2000 participants, including the Ijaws extraction from the state.

NAN reports that Obahiagbon is the APC candidate for Edo South while Idahosa is the party's candidate seeking replace Ms Omosede Igbinedion of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for the Ovia Federal Constituency.

The Asawana group stressed that their decision to back the candidates, was as a result in the failure of the PDP candidates, who are the incumbents, to provide the needed leadership in the area.

The group also noted hat aside the donation of their allowances, they would also mobilized no fewer than 20, 000 supporters in the region in support of these candidates.

They however noted that their support for the candidates is not based on political affiliation, but because of the past records for the candidates.

Spokesman o the group, Olu- Derimon
Omaghomi, said having ex-rayed the performance, such as, bills sponsored, empowerment programmes and relationships with the people, it was discovered that Igbinedion and senator Mathew Urhoghide, have failed the people.

"So, it was concluded that no ijaw community will give, even half a vote, to senator Mathew for his careless and unguided statement against the ijaws of the state.

"That all ex agitators has vowed to donate their one month allowance each under this forum to support Idahosa and Obahiagbon.

"That we will Organise ourselves in groups, in every unit across our areas, especially in the reverine terrain, to protect our vote from ballot snatching and stuffing by the PDP agents in their usual way," he stated.

The group however warned that should the candidate fail to promote the interest of the Ijaws after their elections, similar treatment awaits them in 2023.

They also said the decision on whom to support for the President, would be taken during their Christmas meeting in December. (NAN)

*2019 Budget Proposal: Obaseki to spend N9bn on pension, arrears, gratuity*

...entertainment park gets N500m

The Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration in Edo State plans to sustain the regular payment of pensioners' entitlements in 2019 to demonstrate its respect for the state's senior citizens.

In the state's proposed budget for 2019, the sum of N9billion has been set aside for the payment of gratuity, pension and arrears of pensioners.

Presenting the 2019 Budget Estimates to a session of the Edo State House of Assembly in Benin City, Governor Obaseki said: We will continue to appreciate the labour of our senior citizens whose sweat built our state and its institutions. Therefore, we take the issue of pension payment as our utmost priority.

"In 2018, we have spent N8 billion in pension payment. We plan to spend another N9 billion to pay pension, gratuity as well arears owed from previous years."

Recall that following the intervention of the governor in the age-long face-off between pensioners and previous governments over arrears spanning over 20 years, the state's senior citizens have been receiving their entitlements as and when due, ending years of protest marches at Ring Road, Benin City, by the pensioners.

Obaseki also assured that other sectors of the state will receive their share of attention as provided in the 2019 Budget Proposal.

"An entertainment park that will host the creative arts, film and television productions, is being embarked upon. It is designed to tap into the fast-growing industry by harnessing the creative talent of the Edo people, attract investment and create jobs. To this end, N500 million has been set aside for the project," the governor said.

He added that later in the year, "we will hold the second edition of Edo Festival of Arts and Culture (EDOFEST) to showcase our colourful culture and the potential that lies within the tourism sector."

According to him, "The Ministry of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Diaspora Affairs is in talks with local and foreign investors, who are desirous of investing in our tourist sites.

"Top on the list of these sites are the Sokponba Resort, Kukuruku Hills and the transformation of the popular Benin Moat into a world class tourist centre.

"I wish to announce that in 2019, Edo State will serve as host to the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), for the annual National Festival for Arts and Culture (NAFEST), Nigeria's largest cultural event.

"As a people with enviable cultural heritage, the culture and tourism sector is a major plank of our administration."
