The United States has withdrawn most of its military personnel deployed to Nigeria for a joint counterterrorism mission in the Lake Chad Basin, while maintaining intelligence sharing and other security cooperation with Nigerian authorities.

Commander of US Air Forces in Africa, General Dagvin R.M. Anderson, announced the development during a virtual briefing on the outcome of the African Chiefs of Defence Conference 2026. He said the partnership between Washington and Abuja remains active, particularly in intelligence operations targeting the Islamic State (ISIS/Daesh).

According to Anderson, the mission that required the deployment of US troops has been completed, leading to the withdrawal of most personnel. He, however, noted that the United States would continue providing intelligence support at the request of the Nigerian government.

“That operation in the Lake Chad Basin of Nigeria not only helped the countries in that immediate region; it also helps countries globally as that disrupts the ISIS network,” Anderson said.

“We have withdrawn much of our forces that were just there for that operation, but are continuing the partnership that Nigeria has asked for to help continue with the intelligence sharing and the understanding that’s necessary to prosecute these difficult tasks,” he added.

The US Air Force commander described Nigeria as a key regional partner with a capable military, saying the collaboration between both countries had produced significant gains in the fight against ISIS.

He credited intelligence cooperation between Nigeria and the US for enabling an operation that eliminated the second-highest-ranking figure in the global ISIS network.

“Nigeria is a very capable and large country. It has a strong economy, a large educated population, and a very capable military,” Anderson said.

He added that the US contributed specialised capabilities and intelligence that complemented Nigeria’s military operations.

“We were able to assist and integrate with them to help them with their intelligence and intelligence sharing, which eventually led to a cooperative effort where we brought unique US capabilities to eliminate the number two leader within the ISIS or Daesh organisation, who was responsible for much of their global operations, media and recruitment,” he said.

According to Anderson, the operation demonstrates that intelligence cooperation is more effective than prolonged foreign troop deployments.

“As we go forward, that is an example of how we’re looking at engaging with partners by bringing only unique US capabilities that allow the partner to be effective in these fights,” he stated.

He also called for stronger intelligence collaboration among African countries to combat terrorism, drug trafficking and other transnational crimes.

Anderson cited a recent multinational operation that intercepted a record 31-ton shipment of cocaine originating from South America and transiting through the West African coastline.

“Through our interagency in the United States, AFRICOM and our partners, a Spanish ship eventually intercepted the vessel carrying 31 tons of cocaine. It turned out to be the largest maritime drug seizure ever recorded,” he said.

He stressed that sustained cooperation among African governments, international allies and private-sector stakeholders would be crucial to tackling security threats while promoting economic growth and investment across the continent.

The United States deployed about 200 military personnel to Nigeria in February 2026 to support intelligence, surveillance and counterterrorism operations in the Lake Chad Basin as both countries intensified efforts against ISIS and other extremist groups operating in the region.

The deployment followed US President Donald Trump's redesignation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern and his administration's pledge to strengthen American support for counterterrorism operations.

On December 25, 2025, US forces carried out air strikes on two terrorist camps in the Bauni Forest in Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

The security partnership reached a major milestone in May 2026 when a joint US-Nigerian operation killed Abu-Bilal Al-Minuki, the second-in-command of ISIS, during a raid on his hideout in Borno State.

The Federal High Court in Abuja has affirmed Senator David Mark as the National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), dismissing a suit filed by Representative Leke Abejide challenging the party’s leadership.

Justice Musa Liman, in a judgment delivered on Thursday, upheld the preliminary objections filed by the ADC, former National Chairman Ralph Nwosu, David Mark and the party’s National Secretary, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, ruling that the suit lacked merit.

The court held that it lacked jurisdiction to interfere in the internal affairs of a political party and found that Abejide failed to establish that his rights were violated by the emergence of the Mark-led leadership.

Justice Liman further ruled that the handover of the party’s leadership from Nwosu to Mark did not contravene the ADC Constitution.

According to the court, the stakeholders’ meeting held on July 2, 2025, was followed by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on July 29, 2025, which validly produced David Mark as National Chairman and Aregbesola as National Secretary.

The judge declared that the emergence of both leaders complied with the ADC Constitution, the Electoral Act and other relevant legal provisions.

The court also awarded ₦2 million each in costs to all the defendants, to be paid by Abejide.

In addition, Justice Liman awarded ₦10 million in costs against Abejide’s counsel in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act.

Abejide had asked the court to nullify the leadership handover to Mark and Aregbesola and restrain the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognising them.

The Federal Government has confirmed that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) will replace its traditional khaki uniform with Adire fabric as part of the sweeping reforms recently approved for the scheme.

Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, disclosed this on Thursday during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.

According to the minister, the new uniform will be produced locally to promote indigenous manufacturing and ensure government spending supports Nigeria’s economy.

“It’s Adire. So, Adire is being produced in Nigeria. We have them in Ogun, we have them in Kwara, we have textile industry. Let’s put our money back into the country,” Olawande said.

Corps members to be posted based on qualifications

The minister also revealed that the ongoing restructuring of the NYSC would see corps members increasingly deployed according to their fields of study and professional qualifications.

He explained that graduates with education-related qualifications would be posted to schools and relevant institutions instead of the current system of random deployment.

“After you are leaving the camp, you are not just posted to a school just because NYSC wants you to be in school but because of the process you followed when in camp. So, that is going to give a framework of where you are going to be posted to,” he said.

New deployment strategy to address insecurity

Olawande said the government is also considering a deployment policy that prioritises posting corps members to regions where they studied or are already familiar with the environment, particularly in areas affected by insecurity.

According to him, the move is aimed at reducing anxiety among parents and prospective corps members while making deployments more practical.

“If we have a particular area that is having insecurity, instead of probably forcing people or parents to start talking, we must also give them an opportunity that ‘okay, who are those in that area, that schooled in that area, that know much about that area?’

“If you have interest that you want to go to the North-East, why not? But if you don’t have interest, instead of redeploying you... let us look at who are those in that area that can reside in those geographical areas and still give us the kind of number we are looking for,” he added.

Military remains part of NYSC

The minister also dismissed reports claiming the military would be removed from the NYSC, describing such reports as a misconception.

He clarified that while the scheme’s operational leadership would now be headed by a civilian, the military would continue to provide security support for corps members nationwide.

“We are not taking the military out of NYSC... Military is not taken away, there is no how you can take the military away. It is just saying that we are moving away from military mobilisation to civilian mobilisation,” he said.

The reforms followed Monday’s approval by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) of the most comprehensive overhaul of the NYSC since its establishment 53 years ago.

As part of the reforms, the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Ministry of Youth Development have been directed to amend the NYSC Act and relevant regulations to provide legal backing for the changes.

Under the new framework, the NYSC will operate under civilian leadership, while the military will retain responsibility for security support during orientation camps and other programme activities.

The Federal Government said the reforms are aimed at transforming the NYSC into a skills-driven, productivity-focused youth empowerment institution aligned with its ambition of building a $1 trillion economy.

Former Minister of Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, has been arrested in connection with the ongoing investigation into allegations that he forged academic credentials during his appointment process.

Nnaji was reportedly arrested on Wednesday at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, while preparing to board a chartered flight to Abuja.

Sources familiar with the development said security operatives intercepted the former minister at the airport before taking him into custody. He is expected to be handed over to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) for further interrogation.

The arrest marks a major development in the certificate forgery allegations that have trailed the former minister since he left office.

The ICPC has been investigating Nnaji over claims that he falsified his educational qualifications, including his university degree and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate.

The controversy gained national attention after investigations questioned the authenticity of documents allegedly submitted by the former minister to key government institutions during his screening and confirmation process.

According to earlier reports, the documents were submitted to President Bola Tinubu, the Nigerian Senate, the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and other security agencies as part of the official verification process.

The anti-corruption agency later accused Nnaji of repeatedly ignoring invitations issued to him for questioning over the allegations.

His alleged refusal to honour the invitations prompted the commission to seek legal authorisation to arrest him.

In June, a Federal High Court in Abuja granted the ICPC permission to arrest the former minister as part of its investigation into the alleged certificate forgery.

The court also authorised the commission to declare him wanted through newspapers, social media platforms and other media channels if necessary.

According to the ICPC, the application became necessary after Nnaji repeatedly failed to cooperate with investigators despite several invitations.

The allegations stem from claims that the former minister presented documents indicating that he graduated from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and successfully completed the mandatory NYSC programme.

However, investigations later raised doubts about the authenticity of both certificates.

The controversy intensified after Nnaji reportedly admitted that the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, did not issue him a degree certificate, a development that further heightened public scrutiny of the case.

Despite the allegations, the former minister has consistently maintained his innocence and previously dismissed reports surrounding the matter as a coordinated media campaign against him.

He also challenged the Federal High Court's arrest order by filing an appeal at the Court of Appeal in Abuja in a bid to halt its enforcement.

Wednesday's arrest marks a significant turning point in the investigation as the ICPC moves to intensify its probe.

The commission had yet to issue an official statement on the arrest as of the time of filing this report.

The Certified True Copy (CTC) of the Federal High Court judgment ordering the deregistration of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has emerged and Obtained by The Very Nigerian.

The ruling, delivered by Justice Isa H. Dashen of the Federal High Court, Lokoja Judicial Division, set aside the court's earlier judgment of December 10, 2025, which had directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the NDC as a political party.

According to the judgment, the earlier decision was nullified because it affected the legal rights of the Peace Movement Party (PMP), which claimed ownership of the logo used by the NDC but was not joined as a party in the original suit.

Following the ruling, INEC is expected to remove the NDC from its list of recognised political parties.

However, the commission has maintained that it will act only after reviewing the Certified True Copy of the judgment.

INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, said the commission had applied for the court document before taking any decision.

“We have applied for the Certified True Copy of the judgment. Until we receive it, we cannot be in a position to comment on it. However, the position that existed before the December 10, 2025 judgment was that INEC rejected NDC’s letter of intent to be registered as a political party,” Haruna said.

The development comes as the NDC continues to face challenges ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party has alleged that it was denied the portal access code required to upload the names of its candidates to INEC's nomination portal, a situation it says threatens the political aspirations of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, vice-presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso, and other party candidates.

INEC recently shifted the release of portal access codes from June 26 to Monday, June 29, to streamline submissions by eligible political parties.

Under the commission's timetable, presidential and National Assembly candidates are expected to upload their nomination forms between June 27 and July 11, 2026, while governorship and state assembly candidates have from July 18 to August 8, 2026.

Confirming the denial of access, the NDC's National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, said the party's request for the upload credentials was unsuccessful.

“We approached INEC to collect the access code to upload the names of our candidates to the INEC portal. They told us that they will get back to us,” he said.

Director added that the party would return to the commission while pursuing legal action to halt the implementation of the court judgment.

“We will go back there by tomorrow. I believe by tomorrow we must have filed a stay of execution in court,” he said.

The Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Benue State, Ardo Muhammad, and one other person identified as Yakubu Isah, have been killed by gunmen in Otukpo Local Government Area, triggering tension in parts of Otukpo and neighbouring Ohinmini Local Government Area.

It was gathered that the MACBAN chairman had attended a peace meeting allegedly convened by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ohinmini Local Government Area with leaders of Ayunne community on Friday.

After the meeting, Muhammad and his companion were reportedly travelling back when gunmen ambushed their vehicle at Okudu community in Otukpo Local Government Area, killing both occupants.

The deceased's eldest son, who confirmed the incident in a telephone interview with journalists on Friday night, said his father was ambushed and killed while returning from the meeting.

The Chairman of Otukpo Local Government Area, Maxwell Ogiri, confirmed the incident, saying the killings had heightened tension in the affected community and neighbouring areas.

"It is true that the state chairman of MACBAN was killed within Otukpo Local Government Area this afternoon. The killing has raised tension in the community and its environs," Ogiri said.

He appealed to residents to remain calm, assuring them that security operatives were on top of the situation.

Also confirming the incident, the Chairman of Ohinmini Local Government Area, Adole Gabriel, said the MACBAN chairman had attended the peace meeting convened by the DPO to address the lingering crisis in Ayunne community.

"You know there was a crisis in Ayunne community where some people were killed some time ago, and the DPO of Ohinmini convened a peace meeting with the Fulani herders and the community.

"I was told that the meeting was fruitful and, at the end of it, the man (MACBAN chairman) left. Unfortunately, I learnt that some gunmen ambushed his vehicle at Okudu community in Otukpo LGA and killed him along with one other person," Gabriel said.

The spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, DSP Udeme Edet, also confirmed the incident, stating that the command had received the report and that investigations were ongoing.

Several communities in Otukpo and neighbouring Ohinmini Local Government Areas have witnessed repeated attacks by suspected armed herders in recent months.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced the commencement of its 2026 recruitment exercise, inviting qualified Nigerians to apply for positions across its officer, marshal inspectorate and road marshal assistant cadres.

In a recruitment notice issued on Thursday, the corps said the exercise is aimed at strengthening its workforce and improving service delivery nationwide.

According to the notice, vacancies are available for the positions of Superintendent Route Commander (SRC), Route Commander/Deputy Route Commander (RC/DRC), Assistant Route Commander (ARC), Marshal Inspector II and III, as well as Road Marshal Assistant I, II and III.

The FRSC said applicants for officer cadre positions must possess relevant university degrees or Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) from recognised institutions, while candidates applying for marshal inspectorate and road marshal assistant positions must meet the academic and professional requirements for their respective cadres.

The corps added that artisans, drivers and riders with relevant qualifications and experience are also eligible to apply under the road marshal assistant cadre.

Applicants must be Nigerians by birth, computer literate and medically fit, while possession of a valid National Driver's Licence will serve as an added advantage.

Other requirements include a certificate of medical fitness from a government-approved hospital, relevant professional licences where applicable, and minimum height requirements of 1.65 metres for males and 1.58 metres for females.

The FRSC also stated that applicants must be of good character, free from financial embarrassment and must not have been convicted of any criminal offence.

According to the corps, applications will open on Friday, July 3, 2026, and will remain open for four weeks through the official FRSC recruitment portal.

The agency stressed that the recruitment exercise is completely free, warning applicants to beware of fraudsters, as no payment is required at any stage of the process.

The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has suspended prominent lawyer Mike Ozekhome from using the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).

The suspension will remain in force pending the conclusion of ongoing disciplinary proceedings against him.

The decision was made public in a statement issued on Thursday by Kabir Akanbi, the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, who noted that the committee finalized the disciplinary action during its 173rd general meeting held on June 23.

Ozekhome is one of the most recognizable constitutional lawyers, human rights activists, and public commentators in the country. Over his decades-long career, he has been involved in several high-profile political, constitutional, and human rights cases across the country.

The title of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) is the highest honor bestowed upon legal practitioners in the country, recognizing excellence and long-standing contributions to the legal profession. The LPPC is the statutory body empowered to award and withdraw the rank.

The committee explained that the suspension was approved at its 173rd general meeting held on Tuesday, acting pursuant to Paragraph 26(6) of the Guidelines for the Conferment of the Rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria and all Matters Pertaining to the Rank. The action is tied to disciplinary proceedings currently before the Disciplinary and Ethics Sub-Committee of the LPPC and other related proceedings.

According to the statement signed by Akanbi, who also serves as the Secretary of the LPPC, the temporary ban is intended to safeguard the integrity, dignity, and prestige of the SAN rank while the matters under review are being considered.

The statement stressed that during this period, Ozekhome must strictly comply with the terms of the suspension.

It said, “Accordingly, Chief Mike Ozekhome shall refrain from parading himself, presenting himself, or otherwise holding himself out as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria pending the final determination of the disciplinary proceedings”.

The registrar said the body is dedicated to maintaining the honor of the legal sector.

“The LPPC remains committed to upholding the highest standards of professional ethics, integrity, and discipline within the legal profession and to ensuring that the Rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria continues to command public confidence and respect”.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally transmitted a Constitution Alteration Bill to the Senate seeking to establish state police across the country.

The proposed legislation aims to amend relevant provisions of the 1999 Constitution to provide the legal and institutional framework for the creation and operation of state police forces in the federation.

The move marks a significant step in ongoing efforts to reform Nigeria’s security architecture and deepen the role of state governments in maintaining law and order within their jurisdictions.

President Tinubu has consistently advocated constitutional changes to allow states greater responsibility in addressing security challenges. In February, he called on the National Assembly to expedite amendments that would pave the way for state policing, arguing that the current security realities require a more decentralized approach.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Professor Oluwatoyin Temitayo Ogundipe as chairman of the governing board of the National Universities Commission (NUC).

Ogundipe succeeds Emeritus Professor Olufemi Raphael Aina, who resigned his appointment after less than one year in office. President Tinubu appointed Professor Aina in July last year, and the board members were inaugurated in November 2025.

Ogundipe, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (2017–2022), is a professor of Botany with expertise in molecular plant taxonomy, biosystematics, ethnobotany, cytogenetics, forensic botany, and ecological conservation.

He holds a PhD in Botany from Obafemi Awolowo University and an MBA from the University of Lagos.

Currently, Ogundipe, 66, serves as Pro-Chancellor of Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun State.

He is a fellow of several professional bodies, including the Nigerian Academy of Science, the Linnaean Society of London, and the Royal Society of Biology, London. He has also served as President of the Botanical Society of Nigeria and Chairman of the Lagos State Science, Research and Innovation Council (LASRIC).

As NUC Chairman, Ogundipe will oversee the regulatory body of the Nigerian university system, focusing on funding, global competitiveness and academic stability.

President Tinubu expects Ogundipe to provide visionary leadership at the NUC and sustain the credibility of the Nigerian university system, in alignment with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, by advancing quality, access, and integrity in the education sector.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is set to commence an investigation into activist-lawyer Deji Adeyanju and social media personality Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, over allegations bordering on terror financing, suspected illicit funding channels and other national security concerns.

The probe follows a petition submitted to the anti-graft agency on June 17, 2026, by lawyer Blessing Agbomhere, who urged the commission to examine the funding sources behind the duo’s activism, public protests, legal interventions and media-driven advocacy campaigns.

In the petition, Agbomhere called for a comprehensive forensic audit of their bank accounts, assets, income streams and affiliated corporate entities to determine compliance with Nigeria’s anti-money laundering laws and financial regulations.

He argued that while civic activism is constitutionally protected, the scale and reach of their campaigns raise questions that warrant scrutiny, particularly in light of concerns that hidden funding channels could be exploited by domestic or foreign actors to influence political narratives and undermine state institutions.

The petitioner further urged the EFCC to collaborate with intelligence and security agencies in determining whether any of the funds linked to the individuals pose risks to national security or fall within illicit financial networks.

However, he clarified that the petition does not amount to an accusation of guilt, stressing that the investigation is intended to ensure transparency and accountability. According to him, a clean outcome would ultimately reinforce public confidence in both individuals.

The EFCC is expected to act on the petition in line with its statutory mandate, although the commission has yet to issue an official statement on the matter at the time of filing this report.

The proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced the indefinite suspension of the Office of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, as well as the position of the Director of Radio Biafra, in a move that signals a major leadership dispute within the organisation.

The decision was reached during a full meeting of the Directorate of State (DOS), IPOB’s highest administrative body, following what it described as a review of intelligence reports concerning communications allegedly emanating from Kanu while in detention.

In a statement signed by Mazi Chikadibia Edoziem, Head of the Directorate of State, the group said the DOS would henceforth assume responsibility for the administration and day-to-day management of IPOB affairs.

The leadership explained that the decision became necessary following concerns that certain communications attributed to Kanu had allegedly contributed to arrests and deaths of IPOB members in the South-East.

According to the statement, the leadership was also worried about reports of attempts by some individuals to establish a new militia capable of triggering renewed violence in the region.

The DOS maintained that IPOB was founded collectively by Biafrans in the Diaspora and not by any single individual, stressing that no individual possesses the authority to dissolve the Directorate of State.

The group said the suspension was aimed at preventing individuals from exploiting the authority of the suspended office to engage in criminal activities or make statements capable of endangering members of the movement.

It added that IPOB would no longer accept responsibility for actions carried out by persons who do not currently hold recognised positions within the organisation.

The development comes barely a day after reports emerged that Kanu had dissolved the existing Directorate of State and inaugurated a new leadership structure.

According to a statement issued by IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful, Kanu had appointed US-based Mazi Chris Nwaọgụ as the head of a newly constituted Directorate of State, with responsibility for coordinating the affairs of the organisation.

The latest announcement effectively deepens the internal leadership struggle within IPOB, with rival factions now laying claim to authority over the movement.

The Directorate of State was originally established by Kanu in 2012 as the administrative arm of IPOB and has served under different leaderships over the years.

Meanwhile, Nnamdi Kanu remains in detention following his conviction in November 2025 by the Federal High Court in Abuja on terrorism-related charges, for which he was sentenced to life imprisonment.

The governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has picked Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, the biological son of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as his running mate.

The young Kwankwaso is the immediate past Commissioner for Youths and Sports.

Spokesperson of Kwankwasiyya, Habibu Saleh Mohammed, confirmed the development in a terse statement on Monday.

“HE Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo unveiled Hon Mustapha Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as running mate for 2027 Governorship Election,” he said.

The other political parties the court directed the electoral body to deregister are the Action Peoples Party (APP), Action Alliance (AA), Accord Party (AP), and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).

The court order followed a judgment delivered by Justice Peter Lifu.

The National Forum of Former Legislators had, in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2637/2026, prayed the court to determine whether INEC has a constitutional obligation to remove political parties that fail to meet the electoral performance thresholds set out in Section 225A of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), as reinforced by the Electoral Act 2022 and INEC’s regulations.

It was the position of the plaintiff that the five political parties listed as defendants in the matter had persistently failed to meet the constitutional benchmarks required to retain their registration.

The former legislators stressed that the requirements include winning at least 25 per cent of votes in a state during a presidential election or securing at least one elective seat at the national, state, or local government level.

They told the court that the ADC and the four other parties performed poorly in both the 2023 general elections and by-elections conducted by INEC, thereby failing to win seats across key tiers of government.

The litigants insisted that the continued existence of the ADC and the other defendants as recognised political parties is unlawful and undermines the integrity of the country’s electoral system.

Among other reliefs, the plaintiff urged the court to declare that INEC is duty-bound to deregister such parties.

It further urged the court to compel the commission to deregister the five political parties before preparations for the 2027 elections advance further.

Beyond declaratory reliefs, the plaintiff prayed the court to restrain the five affected parties from participating in general elections or engaging in political activities such as campaigns, rallies, and primaries.

It also sought a court injunction restraining INEC from recognising or dealing with the parties in any official capacity unless and until they strictly comply with constitutional provisions.

The judgment may affect the chances of candidates of the affected political parties, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, to contest the 2027 presidential poll.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has picked former Rivers State Governor and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as the running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for the 2027 presidential election.

The party said Amaechi’s emergence followed extensive consultations and reflected his performance as runner-up in the ADC presidential primaries, as well as his record in public service.

Announcing the decision in a statement on Monday, the ADC National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, described the Atiku-Amaechi ticket as a “unity and rescue ticket” capable of addressing Nigeria’s challenges.

“The proposed partnership between His Excellency Atiku Abubakar and Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi represents more than a political alliance; it is the coming together of two tested statesmen with the experience, national reach, and leadership capacity required to rescue Nigeria from its current challenges and reposition the country for a new era of prosperity, security, and inclusive development,” Abdullahi said.

According to the party, Amaechi’s political and administrative experience makes him well-suited for the role, having served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, two-term Governor of Rivers State and Minister of Transportation.

“Few political leaders in Nigeria today possess such extensive and balanced experience across both the legislative and executive arms of government. This depth of experience will be invaluable in supporting the next ADC administration from day one,” the statement added.

The ADC also said Amaechi’s influence in the South-South and across Southern Nigeria would strengthen the ticket and enhance its national appeal.

“Together, Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi embody a truly national ticket—one that bridges regions, generations, and political traditions. Their combined experience in governance, economic management, public administration, party organization, and nation-building offers Nigerians a credible and compelling alternative capable of restoring confidence in government and accelerating national development,” Abdullahi stated.

The party expressed confidence that the partnership would energise its coalition and inspire support ahead of the 2027 election.

“The leadership of the ADC is confident that this partnership will energize our growing coalition, inspire hope among Nigerians, and provide the leadership necessary to build a stronger, safer, and more prosperous Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the statement said.

The ADC called on party members, coalition partners, civil society groups, youth and women organisations, and other Nigerians to support its campaign as preparations begin for the 2027 general election.

President Bola Tinubu has announced the renaming of the Institute of Petroleum Studies in Kaduna to the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology.

The President made the announcement on Friday during his 2026 Democracy Day nationwide broadcast.

Tinubu said the decision was taken to honour the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua for his contributions to Nigeria’s development and democratic journey.

The institution, formerly known as the Institute of Petroleum Studies, Kaduna, will now operate under its new name as a specialised university focused on geological sciences and engineering technology.

The president described Yar’Adua as one of the key figures who helped shape Nigeria’s modern democracy.

“Every generation has a defining responsibility. The generation of our founding fathers secured independence—the generation of June 12 secured democracy. Our generation must secure prosperity,” he said.

“Let us move forward together—rejecting division, cynicism, and despair; embracing unity, hope, and confidence. Let us build a Nigeria united by a common purpose, strengthened by diversity, where justice is accessible, liberty is secure, and opportunity is abundant.

Yar’Adua was a prominent Nigerian military officer who served as chief of staff of the Supreme Headquarters (de facto vice-president) between 1976 and 1979 under Olusegun Obasanjo, then head of state.

He played a key role in overseeing Nigeria’s first voluntary transition from military rule to a democratically elected civilian government.


After retiring from the military, Yar’Adua established the People’s Democratic Movement (PDM), which became a major force in Nigeria’s political landscape.

An outspoken critic of Sani Abacha’s military regime, he was arrested on charges of treasonable felony and died in prison in 1997 under controversial circumstances.

The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, as a public holiday to commemorate Democracy Day in Nigeria.

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has reportedly replaced several candidates earlier submitted by the Kwankwasiyya faction in Kano State following a dispute over an alleged breach of a 60/40 power-sharing arrangement within the party.

According to a document signed by the Kano State NDC Chairman, Hon. Hussaini Isah Mairiga, the decision was taken to reflect an existing agreement on the distribution of elective positions between the party’s original structure and the Kwankwasiyya bloc.

The document was copied to the party’s National Leader, Seriake Dickson, Kwankwasiyya leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and the NDC North-West Zonal Chairman.

Under the revised list for federal constituencies, the party approved Barrister Isma’il Idris Sani for Kumbotso, Nasiru Ali Ahmed for Nassarawa, Kabiru Ishaq Sa’id for Kano Municipal, Barrister Dayyabu Jamilu Ibrahim for Doguwa/Tudun Wada, Muhammad Hamisu Abubakar for Dawakin Tofa/Rimin Gado/Tofa, Ibrahim Bashir Bango for Sumaila/Takai, and Abdulmajid Isa Umar Mairigar Fata for Gwale.

Adjustments were also made to State House of Assembly tickets in Dala, Tarauni, Kumbotso, Ungogo and Dawakin Kudu constituencies.

Party insiders said the changes were necessitated by the enforcement of a 60/40 sharing formula, under which the Kwankwasiyya bloc was allocated 60 per cent of elective positions while the original party structure retains 40 per cent.

However, the development has triggered tension within the party, with reports indicating that Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is considering leaving the NDC if the affected candidates are not reinstated.

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Wednesday sentenced four members of the Al-Shabaab terrorist group to death by hanging for their involvement in the June 5, 2022, attack on St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State, which left more than 40 worshippers dead and over 100 others injured.

The trial judge, Justice Emeka Nwite, made the declaration after convicting Idris Abdulmalik Omeiza, 25; Al Qasim Idris, 20; Jamiu Abdulmalik, 26; and Abdulhaleem Idris, 25, on a nine-count terrorism charge filed by the Department of State Services on behalf of the Federal Government.

The court, however, discharged and acquitted the fifth defendant, Momoh Otuho Abubakar, 47, after finding insufficient evidence linking him to the terrorist attack.

In the judgment, Justice Nwite held that the prosecution successfully established the guilt of the four convicts beyond reasonable doubt, noting that the evidence before the court clearly showed that they were members of, and active participants in, the activities of the terrorist group responsible for the deadly church attack.

The court found that the convicts were principal members of an Al-Shabaab terrorist cell operating in Kogi State and that they took part in the assault on the church during a Pentecost service.

According to the prosecution, the attackers stormed the church, held worshippers hostage, and unleashed violence that resulted in massive casualties and destruction.

They were said to have used improvised explosive devices and AK-47 rifles in attacking furtherance of their extremist religious ideology.

To establish its case, the prosecution called 11 witnesses and tendered 23 exhibits, including confessional statements and a digital forensic examination report.

Among the exhibits admitted by the court was a technophone device alleged to contain communications exchanged by the defendants before and after the attack.

One of the prosecution witnesses, a Catholic priest who survived the incident, gave a chilling account of how the assailants detonated at least three explosive devices inside the church, triggering panic and bloodshed among worshippers.

Justice Nwite held that the totality of the evidence presented by the prosecution firmly linked the four convicts to the attack and justified their conviction on the terrorism charges.

Former Southampton FC and Royal Antwerp FC forward Victor Udoh has died at the age of 21, with reports indicating that the circumstances surrounding his death are being treated as suspicious.

According to reports, Udoh was found dead in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, shortly after returning to Nigeria following the end of his spell with Czech club Dynamo České Budějovice.

The exact cause of death has not been disclosed, while authorities are yet to provide official details on the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Udoh was regarded as one of Nigeria’s promising young football talents. He began his career with Abuja-based academy Hypebuzz before securing a move to Royal Antwerp in Belgium, where he impressed at reserve level by scoring 12 goals in 21 appearances.

His performances earned him promotion to the first team, where he went on to make 28 appearances for the Belgian side.

In 2024, the striker joined Southampton on a three-and-a-half-year contract. However, he spent only seven months at the English club and did not make a senior appearance before leaving by mutual consent in search of regular playing opportunities.

He later moved to Dynamo České Budějovice in the Czech Republic before returning to Nigeria.

The immediate past Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Professor Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, has joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and clinched the governorship ticket of the party.

He emerged through a voice affirmation during a primary election held on Tuesday in Gombe.

He was declared as the sole aspirant by Hon. Gregory Yenlong, the Chairman of the PDP Electoral Panel.

Speaking shortly after he was declared as winner, Pantami said he contested for the seat to offer service to people of the state.

He pledged that if elected in 2027, he would govern with fairness and justice.

Pantami is now up against Jamilu Gwamna, the gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Gombe.

Earlier, Pantami had kicked against the process which produced Gwamna as consensus candidate of the APC.

He had opted for primaries but pulled out of the exercise on the eve of the election, alleging lack of transparency.

Days after the primaries of the APC, four gubernatorial aspirants of the PDP raised the alarm that there was an attempt to smuggle Pantami into the PDP gubernatorial race.

In a communique issued after an emergency meeting Sunday in Gombe, the aspirants; Alhaji Abdulkadir Hamma Saleh, ⁠Hon. Khamisu Ahmed Mailantarki, Hon. Usman Aliyu Garry and Mrs ⁠Monica Kaltho, said the law did not permit a candidate to defect from one political party to another and subsequently contest the same election process after votes have already been cast and counted in his favour in another party’s primaries.

The aspirants said they welcomed every well-meaning individual into the PDP, but strongly object to any attempt to involve a person who already contested primaries in another party.

But on Tuesday, PDP stakeholders chose Pantami as the right man to fly the party’s flag.

The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays to mark the celebration of Eid.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senatorial candidate for Zamfara Central, Sanusi Bala Turaki Maituta, has unveiled a comprehensive policy blueprint ahead of the 2027 general elections, anchored on what he described as Capacity, Experience, Exposure, and Wisdom (C.E.E.W.).

Tagged the “2027 Policy Agenda and Strategic Development Blueprint,” Maituta said his vision is to build a “secure, prosperous, educated, and economically empowered Zamfara Central” where citizens have access to opportunities and effective representation.

The agenda outlines key priority areas including security, education, youth empowerment, economic growth, social welfare, and grassroots infrastructure development.

On security, Maituta pledged to advocate stronger federal intervention against banditry and kidnapping in Zamfara, support legislation to strengthen security agencies, and promote community-based intelligence systems.

The political gamble taken by former ministers in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet ahead of the 2027 elections has produced more setbacks than success, with only two of the five former Federal Executive Council members securing party tickets after resigning their appointments.

The latest casualty is former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, who lost the APC governorship primary in Bauchi State despite months of intense political mobilisation and grassroots consultations.

Tuggar polled 26,001 votes to finish second behind former Bauchi State governor, Mohammed Abubakar, who secured a commanding victory with 57,517 votes. Another aspirant, Bala Wunti, came third with 13,648 votes.

The outcome effectively ends Tuggar’s governorship ambition and means that only two of the five former ministers who resigned from Tinubu’s cabinet have successfully secured party tickets.

The resignations followed a presidential directive requiring political appointees seeking elective offices to step down before participating in party primaries, in line with the Electoral Act 2026.

Among those who resigned were Tuggar, former Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs Yusuf Sununu, former Minister of Transportation Saidu Alkali, former Minister of State for Labour and Employment Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, and former Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu.

So far, only Onyejeocha and Sununu have emerged victorious.

Onyejeocha secured the APC ticket for the Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency in Abia State after emerging unopposed, while Sununu clinched the APC ticket for Yauri/Shanga/Ngaski Federal Constituency in Kebbi State.

For the others, the journey has been far less rewarding.

Former Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu suffered a crushing defeat in the Oyo APC governorship primary, losing to Senator Sarafadeen Alli. Adelabu subsequently rejected the outcome, alleging widespread irregularities and voter suppression during the exercise.

Similarly, former Transportation Minister Saidu Alkali failed to secure the APC governorship ticket in Gombe State after boycotting the primary election over alleged irregularities. The contest was won by Jamilu Gwamna, who enjoys the backing of Governor Inuwa Yahaya.

With Tuggar's defeat now confirmed, the scorecard of Tinubu’s former ministers seeking elective offices paints a picture of political reality beyond federal appointments.

While ministerial positions offer national visibility and influence, the primaries have once again demonstrated that grassroots structures, local alliances and internal party dynamics remain the ultimate deciding factors in Nigerian politics.

For many of the former ministers, resigning from the Federal Executive Council was a calculated political risk. As things stand, only two have secured the reward they sought, while three have seen their ambitions either stalled or outright rejected by party delegates.
