Also note that the government officially advises that you should add your domestic partner to your health insurance plan only if they will be declared as a tax dependent or if you have a child or children with them.

How To Add A Domestic Partner To Your Health Insurance
Most insurance companies will require your domestic partner to meet the following yardsticks:

• To have lived together for more than 6 months and intend to continue doing so

• That neither of you is married or in a domestic partnership with anyone else

• That you are not related by blood

• And that you depend on each other financially.

That said, if you want to add a registered domestic partner to your health plans (you should have registered with the state already), you may submit a copy of your state registration.

If you want to add a non-registered domestic partner to your health insurance plans, you must fill out the Affidavit for Enrollment of Domestic Partners. You will need to assess the affidavit with your domestic partner to prove that you qualify, based on the listed criteria.

1. Domestic partners may be of the same sex, opposite sex, or non-binary.

2. If your domestic partner has children and he or she is also on the plan, their children may also be eligible for health coverage.

3. If you seek to add your domestic partner’s child or children, you must provide a copy of their birth certificate in order to show their connection to your domestic partner.

You have 60 days from the date of your signed affidavit or state registration to turn in a copy of your documents and make changes to your benefit. Any change you make must be agreeable with the justifying life event change.

Your new elections will be effective the following month after you have submitted your documentation and if you miss your opportunity to submit documentation, your next chance to make changes will be during Open Enrollment.

Documentation that can help you prove domestic partnership:

• Shared ownership of a car or other property

• Proof of joint accounts (bank, credit, loans)

• Designation of primary beneficiary on benefits and wills

• Drivers licenses showing a common address

• Assignment of power of attorneys.

Is My Employer Required To Offer Domestic Partner Health Insurance?
Your employer is not required to offer domestic partner health insurance except in places where it is against the law not to.

They may, however, offer health insurance to the spouses of employees who are married.

Previously, some employers offered domestic partner health insurance to partners who were of the same sex but as soon as same sex marriage was legalized, those benefits were dropped.

You can still ask your employer to add domestic partners to their group health insurance plan since research has shown that the costs of offering domestic partner health insurance are inconsequential for most employers.

What Is The Domestic Partner Health Insurance Tax?
The domestic partner health insurance tax is an extra cost attached to the benefits of domestic partnership health insurance, unlike married couples whose benefits come tax-free.

However, it is possible for your domestic partnership health insurance to be tax-free. Exceptions can be made if your partner:

• Is a citizen, national, or legal resident of the United States, Canada, or Mexico.

• Lives in the same house with you

• Is not the qualifying child of any United States taxpayer

• And gets at least half of their financial support from you.

Note that some states also do not tax domestic partner health insurance at all.
