ProgrammingTop 10 Elements In App Ui Design You Should Know by internetrender(op): 11:38am On Aug 20, 2017
Elements in the app are like the customer relations people in your company. They speak the language of your app in a simple way. They act as tour guides to the various app windows, propose action items and give users company while some items are loading. They diligently take inputs from the customers aka app users. Following are the top 10 App UI elements; Dont forget to share

Image: https://slidetrends.com.ng/attachment.php?aid=4

Icons

Your app icon is the face of your app (and acts as a brand logo if your app becomes iconic!). It needs to be simple, noticeable, and clearly representing your app. The same goes for the rest of your app icons. They are extremely helpful if designed creatively yet intuitively for representing different functions in your app.

Buttons

A button typically appears raised from the background and may have icons or text as its components. Buttons are of various kinds- simple button, drop-down button, toggle button, checkboxes, radio buttons and the like. All of these, especially call-to-action buttons, need to be designed and placed mindfully.

Search fields

Search fields are typically at the top of the screen and play a vital role in user navigation. They need to be visible and it is recommended to place an attractive default question to encourage the user to take action. A good example is the destination search/input box in Uber, which has a default question- Where to? It posits the app as friendly and interactive while making it clear that a destination needs to be entered in the search field/box.

Breadcrumbs

Like the name suggests, breadcrumbs represent where you have strayed away from the home page. They state the current location of and all the preceding pages opened by the user. This is visible as a series of page titles intercepted by arrows describing the user flow.

Notifications

There are two kinds of notifications- In-app notifications and Push notifications. While the former increase usability by helping the user to better utilize app functions, the latter makes the user come back for more. Examples of in-app notifications are the introduction to app usage and new functions. Push notifications are similar to in-app notifications with the exception that they reach the mobile phone user, even if the app is not open.

Tool tips

A tool tip is an incredibly useful element. It appears when the user scrolls over to an item, quickly giving the further description or usage tips. It denotes attentiveness to the user's needs and adds to the app experience.

Pop-up windows

You might dislike them but if used sparingly and with the aim to benefit the user, they can be a real plus. They grab and hold the entire attention of the user so as to bring focus to an important offer or message. The pop-up window doesn't close till some action has been taken within it.

Loading elements and placeholders

These, along with other elements like icons, form a part of micro interactions- a simple, visual way of representing a process and its completion to the user. The idea is to give real-time feedback to the user regarding any function the app is performing. An example of a loading element is the typical circle of dots flashing one after the other, often found when a YouTube video is buffering. A placeholder is something that holds an empty space or screen while the full content is loading. It usually presents blurred outlines of content that is about to load or partial content.

Tags

Tags are terms linked to certain items that make them easy to search. This element is a must especially if your app manages a large database.

Image Carousel

Now, don't we all enjoy those images with dazzling one line descriptions sliding away to reveal another before we get enough of one? That is exactly what an image carousel is. It's certainly a must for e-commerce apps.

What do you think of the above list? Do let us know if you would like to add or replace the above elements with something else.

PhonesBest Practices For Charging Your Smartphones Battery by internetrender(op): 4:57pm On Aug 19, 2017
Each lithium-based battery is capable of a finite number of charge-and-discharge cycles.

With each cycle, the capacity of the battery is very slightly reduced, so we want to avoid as many complete cycles as we can.

To do this, try to keep your battery’s charge level between 40 percent and 80 percent power. Of course, this won’t always be possible, but try not to let your phone’s battery level get below 40 percent too often and keep the number of complete top-offs to a minimum.

Try not to use fast charge every single time you charge your phone. Most fast or rapid charge systems cause the battery to become hot, which we now know is bad for your battery. If you’re using the fast charge option every single time, the battery is getting excess heat more often than it should, resulting in a shorter lifespan.

Earlier in this discussion, we mentioned how lithium ion batteries don’t suffer from the same cyclic memory of nickel-based batteries.

While that’s true, the internal power meter in your smartphone — the part that determines the battery’s current power level — can sometimes get thrown off.

You can recalibrate by doing a full discharge-and-charge cycle: Use your phone until it dies. Once it’s dead, charge it to full capacity while leaving its power off.

Finally, power your phone back on and make sure it reads as fully charged; if it doesn’t, power off and continue charging. Repeat this process once a month or so to make sure your battery is functioning optimally.

PhonesIs Sarahah And Other Anonymous Feedback Platforms A Bad Thing? by internetrender(op): 4:31pm On Aug 19, 2017
Anonymity is one of the internet’s greatest offerings. You can easily mask your identity online, while still getting to do and say what you want to. This anonymity lends itself to more honesty, since there aren’t repercussions.

A new social network has gone viral, which promises to let you get honest feedback. Now that anonymous app Yik Yak has shut down, this is a void that needs to be filled. Apps like Sarahah and some other alternatives can do just that. But Talking of the reason for this discussion, are they bad?

IN MY WORDS, the answer is Yes, They are bad.

Being able to mask your identity lets you be more honest. And that honesty can lead to some wonderful things. But anonymity, especially online, is a double-edged sword. It can lead to some serious harassment too. On the other hand, we also have instances of people saying remarkably friendly things anonymously.

What’s your take on online anonymity, and apps like Sarahah or Satyat? Are they a force for positive change or do they end up being exercises in ego-stroking or cyber-bullying?

EducationDon’t Allow ASUU Strike To Be Prolonged, TUC Begs FG by internetrender(op): 11:34pm On Aug 16, 2017
Lagos – The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has cautioned against prolonging the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to avoid youth involvement in crime.

TUC in statement on Wednesday in Lagos said that the implication of the strike was that it could lead to more youths going into crime, adding “an idle mind is the devil’s workshop’’.

The statement signed by TUC President Bobboi Bala Kaigama and General Secretary Musa Lawal Ozigi, said a prolonged strike was not healthy for the country.

It, however, warned that ASUU issues should be settled as soon as possible, adding that already a lot of unpleasant things were happening in many parts of the country.

“Last week, worshippers were killed in a church in Amambra; insecurity in the North has not abated. In the West, it has been a harvest of kidnappings and ritual killings.

“The news is all over on the social media about Nigerian migrants dying on the high seas almost on daily basis. And now ASUU strike again,’’ it said.

The group appealed to well meaning Nigerians to prevail on the Federal Government to honour the agreements signed with ASUU.

TUC lamented that ASUU had to embark on the strike because an agreement entered into in 2009 was still foot dragging eight years after.

It also called on the striking lecturers not to be tired of making sacrifices because of the state of the economy.

“We call on the government to wade into the strike embarked upon by varsity lecturers and dialogue with them to avoid more damage on the overstretched economy and insecurity challenge,’’ it said. (NAN)

Christianity EtcWhy Are Modern Churches Not Teaching Us This? by internetrender(op): 10:48pm On Aug 16, 2017
He took some bread and fishes from one guy, multiplied it and shared with 5,000 starving people following him.

That's Jesus teaching the Church about wealth creation and distribution. The modern Church doesn't give a shit about the core lessons these stories teach.

The Church could really do a lot in alleviating hunger and poverty in the society but nah! The crazy huge wealth in the Church stays with the demi-gods in charge of the affairs of the Church.

PhonesJust Like Twitter, Redesign In App Will Make Your Facebook DP Circular by internetrender(op): 8:15pm On Aug 16, 2017
https://i-cdn.phonearena.com/images/articles/297558-thumb/fb-hedr.jpg

Facebook announces a redesign of its mobile app that makes profile photos circular. Back in March, it was Twitter, but now (unsurprisingly, given the company's habit of copying ideas from competitors), Facebook has also followed suit. Corners are so 2016, you guys.

But making profile pictures circular (and a bit smaller) isn't the only visual tweak the company is introducing: alongside it, there's an overall shift towards wireframe iconography throughout the app's interface, as well as a change in how post comments look. Namely, Facebook is now employing chat bubbles inside its core app as well, which is intended to make reading comments easier.

Other changes include the ability to see where a link will take you before you tap on it, seeing whose post you're looking at from inside the post, and improved color contrast to improve users' reading experience.

Facebook says the redesign will be rolling out "over the coming weeks,"

EducationASUU Strike 2017: Making The Most Out Of It by internetrender(op): 6:02pm On Aug 15, 2017
The annual festival is here again; the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government are back on the battlefield. The National President of ASUU, Dr. Biodun Ogunyemi, announced that the Union has embarked on an indefinite nationwide industrial action following the failure of the Federal Government to fully implement the 2013 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and the 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement.

Like the popular saying goes, “When elephants fight, the grass suffers”. The strike will mean a cessation of all academic activities in relevant universities, disrupting the academic calendar and the plans of many students as well. Some already took to social media to vent their frustrations.

This one that ASUU is strolling round my school, I hope they aren't planning on striking ! ! ! Don't increase my time. Pleaaase. #ASUU

#ASUU strike.. Experiencing two of it in the university.
Was supposed to graduate Oct 3

— Okewalesunday (@iamokewale) August 13, 2017
But who says students must always be victims in this unending war? With the demanding nature of studying in Nigerian universities, coupled with the fact that this stress doesn’t seem to be translating into much value in the world today; students must learn to make good use of both regular and unexpected school breaks.

In 2009, during the ASUU strike, three undergraduates from the Obafemi Awolowo spent their time away from school building the Jobberman website which remains one of the most popular job boards in Nigeria till date. Olaoluwa Awojoodu, CEO of Electronic Settlement Limited (ESL) also started his journey to entrepreneurship during one of such school strikes.

In the same vein, Oluyomi Ojo, the CEO of Printivo has the ASUU strike to thank for his success in his design and printing business. A 6-months internship that extended to a year because of the strike provided the foundation he needed to build his business.

So while universities may be on strike, students do not necessarily have to shut themselves out too. This free time is an opportunity to learn valuable skills and explore other opportunities outside of school, especially in this digital age when real skills are gaining increasing relevance over university degrees. There are many online and offline learning opportunities to help students achieve this.

The strike is also a good time for students to make extra cash by taking advantage of available freelancing and internship opportunities that do not require a degree.

Perhaps the search for these opportunities won’t be so difficult; some employers are already opening their doors.

Use this ASUU strike to come intern at Hotels.ng and become the best software developer you can be. Email neo@hng.tech and ibiyemi@hng.tech

— Mark Essien (@markessien) August 14, 2017
We can’t tell how long this recent squabble between ASUU and the Federal Government will last but it’s up to you to make every second of that time count.

Reports about the upcoming release of the Android O are a bit confusing. Although Google is expected to launch the new version of the mobile platform this month, we don't know when exactly the search giant will push the release button.

https://slidetrends.com.ng/Thread-Android-O-is-most-likely-to-be-released-August-21

According to a report coming from AndroidPolice's David Ruddock, Google might have pushed the release of Android O for Pixel beyond the August 21 date. He also claims that he's got unverified information that Google plans to give the Android O its market name on the day of the solar eclipse, August 21.

A more recent piece of information coming from Evan Blass claims Android O release is scheduled for the week of August 21. Moreover, the new version of Android will “most likely” be launched on August 21, the same rumor claims.

Well, it probably doesn't really matter when exactly Android O gets released as long as it comes this month. Since we're more than a week away from its launch, there's a high chance that we'll get more information on the matter, so stay tuned.

PhonesInstagram Starts Testing Live Video Sharing For Subscribers by internetrender(op): 8:25am On Aug 09, 2017
Starting on Tuesday, Instagram subscribers were able to test out the latest new feature for Instagram. This new feature allows you to share a live video stream with a friend who becomes part of your broadcast. You can decide when your guest is ready to leave, or that decision could be left up to the guest. If something comes up that warrants an immediate end to your broadcasting day, tap on the word "Discard" and your signal cuts out immediately, leaving you as relevant as "Glee."

After wrapping up your live feed, you have the choice of adding the final product to Stories, or placing the file in the trash receptacle for future, ahem, study.

It appears as though Live Video Sharing is another new feature designed to make life easier and a small number of users are getting to test this out in Instagram's global communities. We're not not sure how much more testing needs to be done before the feature is green lit, but we'd venture to guess that it won't be terribly long before Instagram buddies are taking virtual walks throughout the fake cities of their home towns.

"Since introducing live video in November, millions of people have used it to connect with friends and followers in an authentic way. Now, you can have even more fun connecting with people in the moment."-Instagram

The floodgates have opened now that the iPhone 8 is in mass production. It didn’t take long to get what has to be the first clear photos of the upcoming bezel-less flagship, both front and back!

Speaking of the back, there’s no fingerprint here. None on the front either. There’s no photos of the sides, but it’s probably a “no” there as well. That leaves the facial recognition in charge of Apple Pay.

Earlier this year, YouTube launched a new private video sharing feature for the service on mobile. After first launching in Canada and then expanding to the rest of North America, the Shared tab is now rolling out globally around the world.

The Shared feature manifests as a fifth tab in the bottom bar of the YouTube mobile apps for Android and iOS. Users can have individual threads, as well as larger group ones for privately sharing, liking, and commenting on videos. Shared videos in these threads will conveniently play in-line.
PhonesYoutube For Android Rolls Out Speed Controls For Video Playback On Some Devices by internetrender(op): 8:07pm On Aug 07, 2017
http://slidetrends.com.ng/showthread.php?tid=45

One of the special features that YouTube reserves for its desktop version only is speed controls: being able to speed up or slow down a video is especially useful for those trying to learn moves from videos, or just looking for those tiny details that are not easily noticeable.

Now, YouTube seems to be mulling adding speed controls to its mobile application. 9to5Google has noticed the option to select video speed on YouTube for Android, version 12.29.57, but the option is not yet available to everyone out there (we don't have it yet).

The speed options available on mobile seem to be the same as on desktop: 0.75x, 0.5x, or 0.25x the normal speed, or faster at 1.25x, 1.5x, or 2x. In order to bring up those controls, you need to tap on the dots menu in the upper right corner.

There is nothing official from Google just yet, but the feature seems to be coming. In the meantime, feel free to give it a try yourselves, do you see the new speed controls?

Its been a long time since Apple and Instagram have been in one sentence, but on this very Monday, the team from Cupertino finally stopped being a Luddite, and embraced the inevitable - their own Instagram account.

So far, Apple's own spot in the image-centric social media is populated with photos and videos from its "Shot on iPhone" campaign (what else), though we can't help but wonder "why now?"

Is it something to do with the upcoming iPhone 8 and its vertical dual camera set? We'll know more when we see its first samples, but for now you can head over @apple on Instagram, and enjoy the fine camera work of the current iPhone crop.
