The most painful mistake any salesperson makes is jumping into a swimming pool that has no water in it: namely, trying to sell something that nobody wants to buy.

Taking a cue from gambling, the first lesson about gambling is, you have to play games you can win. Invariably, you need to play people who are not as good at poker as you are.

Selling to the right person is more important than all the sales methods, the wrong person doesn’t have the money, or the wrong person doesn’t care. The wrong person won’t be persuaded by anything.

What does it mean to rack that shotgun?

It means to send one calculated signal that most ignore, but a few respond to. The few that desperately need your product.
You might not even have to make that move yourself. Someone else can rack the shotgun—you just have to watch.

For instance, 50 people in the club; and a shotgun is racked (gun cocked), 10 heard the shotgun sound, 40 didn’t. The 10 people that turned around at the sound of the gun are experienced with guns while the 40 who didn’t notice the sound are amateurs. Fastest way to separate the amateurs from the pros.

In sales, before you bet your precious time or money on any product, you need to rack the shotgun. Rack the shotgun to know the number of people that responded to your signal.

If you’ve racked the shotgun by offering, say, a troubleshooting guide, and 50 people have turned their heads by requesting it, you can rack a different kind of shotgun—like offering a live training workshop. This narrows your 50 down to 10 hyper-responsive targets who will carry you farther than the other 40 combined.
