Politics / Letter By Chief Awolowo Requesting For An Education Loan From Chief Odutola by iOctane: 12:11pm On May 13, 2017
Dear Mr. Odutola,

I think it will be an exceeding saving of time and more business-like if I avoid all sweet preliminaries and go straight into the object of this letter and say that I am writing to ask you to be good enough to lend me a sum of £1,400 (One thousand and four hundred pounds) free of interest for twelve years.

It is a staggering figure! More staggering indeed does it become, when it is realized that I, who am asking for this loan, have nothing in all the world to give as a security for this money, excepting my good faith and my brains which again are of value only so long as I continue to breathe the breath of life!

Nevertheless, I here proceed to outline in brief why i want this big loan from you. And I hope you will be kind enough to sacrifice some time to go through what I have to say, even though, in the end you might find yourself unable to do me this grand favour.

One great ambition of mine since my boyhood days is to be a lawyer, a politician and a journalist, rolled into one. I cherish politics and journalism as a career, and I desire advocacy as a means of livelihood. For you will agree with me that a politician or journalist who has no money with which to support himself and family comfortably, is like a blade which has no razor.

Now, at one time, I was on the verge of making enough money with which I could proceed to England in order to pursue the object of my ambition; but I suffered a twist in my fortune, and I crashed. Ever since, I have tried without success to recover lost grounds, financially. But spiritually and intellectually, I have made appreciable advance in spite of towering difficulties, all of which have now been surmounted.

As you are aware, I have just passed the intermediate Bachelor of Commerce Examination. Next year, I am taking the final B.Com. Having a degree is not my goal; I hate to be a government or mercantile employee. Otherwise, there are opportunities for me here and there to get a suitable and well paid job under government or one of the mercantile houses. As you know, however, once I become an employee of government or a mercantile establishment that is the end to my career as a politician and journalist. I have therefore resolved that under no circumstances will I take up such employment.

That is just by the way. I am now thirty-four years of age. After careful thought, I have come to the conclusion that if I could raise a loan free of interest sufficient to cover expenses, I should go to England, this year and within three years, I should qualify as a Barrister –at –law, and also obtain with Honours the LL.B Degree of London University. In addition this degrees apart from giving me good backing as a solicitor and Advocate will help me immensely as a politician and journalist.

But where on earth could i get the money? Who in Nigeria today could give £1,400 free of interest to help his fellow-man? J. Henry Doherty, Esq., of illustrious memory who did the like to many successful Nigerians is no more. But after meticulous, shifting and weighing, I hit upon you.

I have no doubt whatsoever in my mind that out of the bounty with which providence blesses your grit and efforts as a businessman, you can well easily afford to advance such a sum of money. I have no doubt too that as a young and progressive man you will be quite happy to give the money for the pursuit of the project for which I desire it.

But then, could you take this risk?

That is the question. As I have said before, I have no security for this loan. Moreover, I want it free of interest. So that you stand to gain absolutely NOTHING in the whole transaction, except the satisfaction that by helping me to achieve my ambition you are indirectly or even directly helping Nigeria or even Africa.

This risk becomes greater when it is borne in mind that I might die in the course of my studies or immediately after, so that, since I have no security or surety, you stand the chance of losing not only the money but also the satisfaction which you may cherish that you are contributing to the uplift of Africa. It is indeed a great risk; the greatest any man ever embarks upon.

But, this is a big BUT, if I live, as I have no doubt I will do, you will not only get your money back in full, but you will, to the end of your days, have cause to rejoice that you have done one of the most outstanding and most philanthropic acts any human being ever does. Among other things, I shall make excellent use of the money while in England by breaking records in my examination. On my return to Nigeria, I shall strive to be one of the foremost advocates, politicians and writers in West Africa, and while I do all these, I shall make it a point not only to pay your money back in full, but also to repay your kindness and generosity towards me in every way I can.

All the same, it is a big risk! So, Sir, I like you to think seriously about it, and see if you can take it in the interest of a young man who has brain, industry and determination to back his ambition, but lacks the money. I know we have never been close friends, but I have a shrewd idea that you may take the risk and help me.

On this assumption, therefore, I proceed to the next and last stage of this letter.

I shall not require the whole £1,400 in a lump sum. To start with, you will help me pay a sum of £208-13s-3d to the Inner Temple. I have already received an application form from this Inn of Court; and from the details forwarded, I gather that the sum of £208-13s-3d will cover all the cost of training as a barrister, examination fees excluded.

When I am ready to sail, you will advance me a sum of £100 to cover passage, provision for my family and any other incidental expenses (NOTE: If I got torpedoed on the way, you would certainly lose this £100 but you will recover the £208-13s-3d).

At the same time you will remit to a London Bank the sum of £491-6s-9d. It is out of this amount that I shall pay the university fees for LL.B course and for special courses in political science and journalism, when I land in England. This is to say, the initial advance will total £800.

At the end of the first year, provided I make satisfactory progress in my studies, you will give instruction to the bank to honour all cheques from me drawn on this account. There will be an arrangement to be signed by me on my return.

On my return, I shall require TWO years within which to establish a solid practice and build a good reputation. After these two years, I should commence to pay at least £200 per annum either in monthly, quarterly or annual payments. So that in seven years after the first two years, I should pay back the whole sum of £1,400. That will be TWELVE YEARS from the time you help me to pay this in April or so this year, then I should be due to pay the whole of £1,400 by April 1955.

Now, as you yourself will see, this is the farthest limit within which I can pay the money. It may be possible for me to pay the money within THREE to FIVE years of my return. As a matter of fact, the sooner I pay it off, the better. But it is much better to be on the safe side in a matter like this. It is no making promises now which will be difficult to fulfil in future. On the contrary it is better to mention a period of twelve years and pay within SIX or EIGHT years than to mention FIVE YEARS and fail to pay within TEN years. Personally, I prefer that I should fail to get the loan under theses unattractive but sure conditions, rather than succeed in getting it under attractive but precarious conditions.

Now, this is all I have to say. You have my request before you, and the reason why i make the request. It is left for you to decide whether it is worthwhile to take the risk of helping me in the manner outlined above or not.

If you do me the great favour, not only myself and all that are mine, but also God and Africa will be grateful, I shall have no cause whatsoever to grumble or to blame you, FOR THE RISK IS GREAT.

Since this is a very selfish request, I enclosed herewith a self addressed stamped envelope to be sent under a registered post.

Obafemi Awolowo.

Health / Airtel Touching Lives ‘rescues’ Two Dying Children by iOctane: 9:38am On Mar 27, 2017
Airtel has used the latest episode of Airtel Touching Lives to show how timely intervention can save the lives of children who are in dire need of medical attention.

The sixth episode of the philanthropic programme’s third season, which aired at the weekend, features two little girls, both of whom receive a Touching Lives relief package from the telecommunication services provider

One of the children suffers from a congenital heart condition, and the other, an orphan, is a victim of HIV/AIDS.

Six-year-old Hannah Enakrakpor was born with a heart defect that makes her breathless after walking a few steps. “Our daughter is dying,” said Andrew Enakrakpor, her father. “I don’t want to lose my daughter.”

However, to keep Hannah alive, the parents said they must pay for an expensive heart surgery in India. “But I don’t have that kind of money,” her mother, Rebecca Enakrakpor said. “In fact, I don’t have anything.”

The other child, Simbiat Taiwo, nine, currently lives with her indigent 80-year-old grandmother in Ikare Akoko, Ondo State. Both of her parents died when she was only six years old and in 2014, after she fell into a curious illness, doctors discovered she had HIV.

“When we found her, she had a massively swollen head and unexplained sores on her body. She wasn’t going to school,” said Olubiyi Love Ogundipe, a social worker at St Joavics, a non-governmental organisation devoted to orphans and widows. Taiwo’s condition was “shocking,” he added.

With the assistance of teachers in the local primary school and doctors at the nearby Federal Medical Centre, Owo, Taiwo received an initial treatment for the sores and enormous bumps on her head. The next stage of her treatment said Ogndipe, would be to get her placed on Anti Retroviral Therapy (ART).

Aside from that, “we have been grappling with the question of who will take care of Simbiat after her grandmother passes on,” he said.

Airtel paid for a corrective surgery for Hannah Enakrakpor and created a scholarship worth N1m for Simbiat Taiwo. Aside from that, the telecom company will pay Taiwo’s grandmother’s rent for two years.

“We hope that Touching Lives will inspire well-to-do Nigerians to help the disadvantaged and support the work of NGOs like St Joviacs,” said Airtel in a statement.

Hosted by Wana Udobang, Airtel Touching Lives will return to television networks all over the continent on Saturday and Sunday, the company said.

Health / Airtel Supports Nine Year Old In Second Battle Against Cancer by iOctane: 2:59am On Mar 17, 2017
A nine year old cancer survivor who is having to battle the disease for a second time, has received a lifeline from Airtel on the latest episode of Touching Lives.

Pillar Egona, whose left leg was amputated to save her from a life-threatening tumour, had outgrown her prosthesis and needed a new one. On Airtel Touching Lives Season 3 Episode 5, the telecommunications services provider promised to pay a prosthesis surgeon to treat the little girl and recommend a new prosthesis for her in Nigeria.

While showing appreciation to her new benefactor, Egona said, with the new artificial leg, “I can be normal, I can be like everyone else.”

But not long after the programme was recorded, Egona’s cancer returned and now, Airtel has said it would redirect its assistance to her treatment.

As revealed by Egona’s mother, Mojisola, an innocuous fall triggered the tumour that would eventually cost Egona her leg.

In 2014, while the girl was running about at home, she slipped and crashed into a wall, hurting her leg. After treating the bruises with home remedies, her mother expected her to get better. But, several days afterwards, said Mojisola, Egona still limped and the bump on the leg continued to grow.

After conducting a few tests, doctors realised she had osteosarcoma and for specialist treatment, the family was advised to take the child to India. “We were able to get the cheapest rate in India at the Cancer Institute, Chennai,” said Egona’s father, Abraham.

According to a radiation therapist, Mrs Animashaun, Egona’s fall was “a lucky break for her”. The domestic accident led to an early detection, she said, and detecting cancer early often saves victims’ lives.

She noted that the incidence of cancer in Nigeria has been rising because of the increase in the consumption of processed food. Also, more people are getting themselves checked and contributing to cancer reporting in the country.

However, the cost of Egona’s therapy was beyond her family’s capacity. “I had to go public to ask people to help my daughter,” her father said. For the operation and journey to Chennai, the parents raised N18m. “You can imagine the pain, having to beg people. Sometimes you’re abused and people will call you names.”

But, despite weeks of chemotherapy, the cancer continued to spread. Eventually, doctors recommended an amputation.

It wasn’t easy seeing her lying on the bed,” said Mojisola. “But I was able to go through the period because I believed in God, and with God all things are possible. Also, I knew Pillar was looking up to the dad and me for support so I couldn’t afford to break down. When it was time for amputation I just had to call her and let her know why we had to go for it, and she understood.”

After the donation was announced, the Egona family thanked Airtel for saving their child again. “I’ll be able to play, run, do sports, and I’ll be able to climb the stairs as well,” Pillar Egona said.

Airtel Touching Lives will return this Saturday on television networks across Africa, the telecom company has said.

Hosted by Wana Udobang, the philanthropic programme, episode six of season three will premiere on Africa Magic Urban at 6:30pm and on Africa Magic Family at 7pm. The same instalment will be broadcast from 9-9:30pm on RaveTV.

The following day, Africa Magic World will air a rerun from 6-6:30pm, followed by NTA Network from 6:00pm, and ArewaTV from 7pm.

Health / Airtel Offers Support To Paraplegic Father Of Two On Touching Lives by iOctane: 9:41am On Mar 04, 2017
A former flight attendant and father of two will be the next beneficiary of Touching Lives, the philanthropic programme sponsored by Airtel.

The fourth episode of season 3 will air this Saturday and Sunday on terrestrial and satellite television networks across Africa, the telecommunications services provider has said.

A statement by Airtel revealed that the company would be offering relief to Oladimeji Adekunle, who lost the use of both legs in a car accident 10 years ago.

Adekunle said his life was “extremely perfect” before the accident. “My life was extremely perfect. My aim was to become a pilot and I had just been promoted to senior cabin crew member,” he said.

Since the mishap, however, he has been confined to his home, with his wife, a small business owner, left to shoulder the cost of raising their two boys and running the household. For more than two years, the children were out of school because the parents could not pay the school bills. “It’s been terribly rough,” Adekunle said.

His wife, Olaide Adekunle, added that help was sometimes difficult to come by. “I have to go to friends and not everyone of them are really helping. Sometimes some people will really mock you. The business stopped and I tried to put something together,” she said.

In the middle of the couple’s struggle, the city demolished Olaide’s shop to make way for a new development. Although she, along with other traders in the market, was offered an alternative space, the cost of the facility was higher and out of the family’s reach.

The Adekunles’ plummeting financial position also reduced the number of days the children could spend in school. On many occasions, teachers shut the boys out of classrooms for unpaid school fees.

Adekunle has remained optimistic in spite of his difficulties. Apart from his wife’s constant support, there had been a few other people chipping in from time to time. But more help was still needed, especially to keep the kids in school.

Although he can no longer play football with the boys, “My biggest concern now is my children’s education,” Adekunle said.

According to Airtel, after the coming episode, Adekunle and his family will have a reason to smile again.

Hosted by Wana Udobang, Airtel Touching Lives returns this weekend to its usual slots on local and international television, according to the timetable released by the telecom giant.

On Saturday, it will premiere on Africa Magic Urban at 6:30pm and on Africa Magic Family at 7pm. Later, from 9-9:30pm, it will air on RaveTV.

The following day, reruns of the episode will be on Africa Magic World from 6-6:30pm, on NTA Network from 6:00-6.30pm, and on ArewaTV from 7-7:30pm.

Literature / Short Story: Life Without Data by iOctane: 9:50am On Feb 27, 2017
My phone beeps. Message notification from service provider. It reads, ‘’Dear customer, you have used up 75% of your data bundle.’’ I go into severe shock. How could this have happened? I subscribed to a data plan of 2GB just the previous day. I check my data balance and I have only 750MB left. My world comes to a standstill.

I am broke. Yesterday I had 3200 naira, from which I used 2000 naira to purchase the data leaving me with only 1200 naira. Now, the data that was supposed to last for a month was gone in just one day! And I have no hope of getting money anytime soon. No facebook, twitter or whatsapp. I start sweating. There is no way 750 MB would last for a month.

Just then another beep. Message from service provider. My heart leaps with hope. Maybe they have discovered their error and reinstalled my data. I open the message. ‘’Dear customer, you have used up your data bundle.’’ I scream in anguish as if I am being tortured by a Spanish Inquisitor. I frantically check my data balance. 0.0MB. I look at my phone in disbelief. Without data it feels just like a brick.

I have a moment of clarity, check my update history and there it is. ‘’You successfully updated 19 applications.’’ Jesus of Kumasi! Me? When? How? I never update my applications unless it stops working or my life depends on it. All to conserve data and now it is all gone. I remember my neighbors’ daughter, Rita fiddling with my phone the previous day. She probably put it on auto update. I look out of the window and the whole world has gone bleak. No data.

Just then the realization that the worst is yet to come grips me. My credit! I had borrowed 200 naira credit and since my data was gone it was bound to start using up my credit. I quickly switch off my data and check my credit balance. ‘’Your credit balance is 2 naira.’’ I am too stunned to react.

I lie on my bed contemplating life without data. It is unbearable. I would rather use my last 1000 naira to subscribe, and starve, than to live life without data. I walk to the junction, buy 1000 naira credit, go back home and load it. Message notification. ‘’Your 200 Naira loan is fully repaid. Your balance is now 800 naira.’’

Otio! I had forgotten that I borrowed credit. I sit on my bed and put my hand on my jaw. I can’t bundle data with 800 naira. I need 200 naira to bundle data. All the money I have left is just 300 naira. But there is no point keeping the 800 naira credit, I might as well take the final plunge and buy the 200 naira credit. How I am going to survive with 100 naira is what I do not know.

I leave my phone charging and walk back to the junction to get the credit. I look so despondent. Lizzy the card seller asks if I am ok. I force a smile and say I am, but I feel like bursting into tears.

I open my door to find Rita my neighbor’s daughter in the living room fiddling with my phone. ‘’Drop that phone!’’ I scream. She is so shocked she drops it on the ground. I do not answer her silly questions and she walks out angrily. I give her a dirty look. If I was Elijah I would have called down fire from heaven to consume her. I proceed to load the credit and then bundle it but it says,’ ’you do not have sufficient credit to complete this operation.’’

Africa! Is 200 + 800 not = 1000? I check my credit balance. It is 990 naira. What kind of wahala is this? Where did the ten naira go? I check my phone and realize Rita has switched on my data and it has eaten into my credit. I cannot bundle. I need 10 Naira to complete it.

I have made up my mind. I am buying a Nokia 3310 tommorow.

…Donates sophisticated Braille equipment, N.4m, other relief materials

Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria: December 5th, 2016: Employees of leading telecoms operator, Airtel Nigeria, have come to the aid of Sadiq Usman, a four year old boy, whose eyes were removed by suspected ‘ritualists’ in Zaria, Kaduna State, earlier this year.

A delegation of Airtel employees led by the Regional Operations Director, North Region, Wole Abu, visited Sadiq Usman on Thursday, December 1, 2016 in his home town in Zaria, Kaduna and presented him with a cheque of N400, 000 (Four Hundred Thousand Naira), sophisticated Perkins Brailler, Braille Coacher, Abacus, typewriter, tailors Frame and a computer laptop.

Airtel employees made the donations at the instance of its Employee Volunteer Scheme, a special platform created for the company’s staff to volunteer their time, skills and resources to uplift the underprivileged as well as support social causes that will create positive impact in the society.

With the donations, little Sadiq, a pupil at Prof. Ango Abdullahi International School, Zaria, is further empowered to learn to read and write, enjoy all the opportunities a good education provides and lead a normal life.

Commenting on Airtel’s employees’ support, the company’s Director of Corporate Communications & CSR, Emeka Oparah, said: “It is tragic and heart-breaking to see an innocent, vulnerable child suffer and go through such excruciating pains.

“My colleagues were deeply moved by Sadiq’s situation and generously supported the call to provide relief. Our support will not just end here, Sadiq is our adopted son and he will continue to be our priority and in our prayers

“I must thank my colleagues for their willingness to helping create a positive impact across the communities where we operate. Indeed, the Airtel Employees Volunteer Scheme (EVS) is committed to providing relief for the underprivileged, sick, physically disabled and hard to reach.”

Oparah also commended the authorities of Prof. Ango Abdullahi International School for offering Sadiq’s older brother and guide scholarship to be able to provide physical support to his disabled kid brother, adding that by the time the government of Kaduna State redeems its pledge of scholarship for Sadiq, his educational future and the opportunity to live and learn would be further guaranteed.

Sadiq’s family expressed their gratitude to employees of Airtel and other well-meaning individuals and organizations for coming to the aid of their son and making it possible for him to live a happy life despite the challenges.

Sadiq’s poignant story made headlines around the world after he was kidnapped and had his eyes forcefully removed by still unidentified assailants.

The unfortunate incident occurred in Bula area of Jushi in the outskirts of Zaria, Kaduna State, where little Sadiq lives with his parents. He was later treated at the ABU Teaching Hospital.

Business / Accenture And Endgame To Help Organizations Kill Cyber Threats In Real-time by iOctane: 1:30pm On Aug 11, 2016
Operated by security specialists, rapidly deployable solution detects and evicts adversaries

NEW YORK; August 1, 2016 – Accenture (NYSE: ACN) and Endgame Inc., a leading provider of security solutions designed to proactively evict adversaries, have created a threat hunting as-a-Service offering for clients. Powered by Endgame and operated by Accenture senior cybersecurity hunters, the powerful service stealthily helps to identify and surgically remove known and never before seen adversaries that have evaded traditional security methods.

Core to the offering are Accenture’s seasoned global cybersecurity hunters, whose deep experience enables them to identify and terminate the efforts of latent attackers targeting organizations’ intellectual property, business systems or other key assets. Clients can benefit from continuous business operation, free from disruption faced by users of traditional security approaches, who are typically under siege for months as they try to identify and remediate sophisticated adversaries.

“Today, cyber attackers can circumvent even the most fortified of traditional enterprise defense systems,” said Vikram Desai, managing director, Accenture Analytics – Security Lead. Rather than building a taller defensive wall, we’re giving our clients the ability to strike first – to stop adversaries before they attack. Delivering this capability requires two fundamental elements: battle tested experience outmaneuvering enemies and specialized technology that gives you an unfair advantage. With Endgame, this is exactly what our hunting as-a-Service offering delivers. Armed with it, our clients spend less time dealing with threats and more time on innovation and growth."

“Attackers are winning far too often,” said Nate Fick, CEO of Endgame. “We need to compress adversary dwell time by vigorously hunting across the enterprise architecture and terminating malicious behavior before it can get too far. Endgame and Accenture’s joint solution combines state-of-the-art technology with top-notch talent in order to deliver an always on, end-to-end hunt solution that simply outsmarts traditional Indicators of Compromise (IOC) and signature-based tools.”

@Endgame and @Accenture’s solution identifies and eradicates both known & unknown adversaries

The managed threat hunting as-a-Service consists of:
Continuous endpoint monitoring and reporting for targeted attacks that have bypassed defensive security technologies.
Ability to expose and eliminate active and dormant adversaries that have infiltrated networks, followed by a precise response without disrupting normal business operations.
An actionable list of vulnerabilities and procedures to remediate and prevent future attacks, reducing the cost and impact of incident response.
“The ability of cybercriminals to sneak past even the most fortified defense systems has intensified the pressure on organizations to develop better threat detection capabilities,” said Zeus Kerravala, founder and principal analyst with ZK Research. “Rather than waiting for a cyberattack to happen, enterprises need to arm their people with skills and technologies to help them generate actionable intelligence and hunt effectively. That’s why the Accenture and Endgame threat hunting as-a-Service offering is an industry game changer. Drawing upon Accenture’s deep bench of skilled security professionals and combined with Endgame’s platform it will enable the early detection and removal of malicious activity.”

“As attacks have become more advanced, enterprises can no longer sit back and wait for threat data to come to them," said Ryan Gurr, Information Security Manager at NuScale Power. “The next generation of security challenges requires a more proactive approach to detect and respond to threats that have evaded defensive technologies. I have found Endgame’s Hunt platform helpful in allowing an analyst to quickly detect never-before-visible malicious behaviors on host systems, and block and remove threats at the earliest stages."

In March 2016, Accenture announced an alliance and minority investment into Endgame to resell the company’s hunt platform as part of its portfolio of holistic cyber defense services that include strategy, transformation, managed security services, the Accenture Cyber Intelligence Platform, automated threat intelligence, monitoring, advanced analytics and real-world adversary simulations, as well as incident response and remediation.

For more information on the threat hunting as-a-Service offering, Black Hat 2016 conference attendees can visit Endgame’s Booth #1554, and read Accenture and Endgame’s joint Hunter’s Handbook, a guide to adversary hunting.
