Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba Must Surrender Ethnic Identities To Nigeria By Fredrick Nwabufo
We, the Igbo, the Hausa, the Yoruba, the Fulani, the Ijaw, the Esan, the Urhobo – and all other ethnic nationalities -- should surrender our ethnic identities to the Nigerian identity. This does not imply abandoning our roots, but embracing an expansive identity for the survival of our country.

BY FREDRICK NWABUFOMAR 06, 2021

Genocides or mass killings do not just happen. They are usually harbingered by conspiracy theories of ethnic and religious complexions, sentiments, skewed perceptions and assumptions. Are all these ingredients of doom present in today’s Nigeria? Yes, very much so. But it is for this reason that we must not take a day off in pulling our country out of the precipice.

The Rwanda genocide is a familiar example but of which precedent Africans and Nigerians particularly, have refused to learn from. A smorgasbord of the precipitations of the Rwanda genocide bubbles in our country. The cauldron boils, and we are skating soberly into molten magma.

RECONCILIATION

In about 25 years after the genocide, Rwanda has been able to rebuild itself into the lodestar of Africa. It may not be a perfect country yet, but it is a fine example of how ethnic cleavages can be managed by deliberate government interventions.

Rwanda did not ignore or try to blot out the genocide from its history. It embraced its past shining a light into the present from the ruins of a never-to-be forgotten era. The East African country acknowledges till date that sombre episode and holds an annual event in memory of those lost to the violence.

Fredrick Nwabufo

To pour oil on troubled waters and permanently submerge the vestiges of ethnic conflicts, Rwanda launched a robust reconciliation programme and retooled the Rwandan Identity. Being Rwandan was no longer on the basis of whether you are Hutu or Tutsi.

Let me share a note by the UN on the Rwandan reconciliation effort:

‘’The reconciliation process in Rwanda focuses on reconstructing the Rwandan identity, as well as balancing justice, truth and peace and security in the country. Different measures have been taken by the Rwandan government towards achieving the goal of perpetrators and victims living side by side in peace. For example, the Constitution now states that all Rwandans share equal rights. And laws have been passed to fight discrimination and divisive genocide ideology.
Primary responsibility for reconciliation efforts in Rwanda rests with the National Unity and
Reconciliation Commission.’’

Would I be asking for too much if I request that the government make conscious effort at reconciling all Nigerian groups through intended policies – even if it means setting up a Unity Commission with pragmatic targets? I must say, as of now there is no wilful policy or programme by the government to manage our unity.

You cannot seek to suppress epochal outcomes of the past, whether they are negative or positive, in the life of a people and expect to manufacture congenial relationships. When there is suppression, there is resistance. Whatever you seek to suppress will always be given oomph from the underground.

The little annoyances that effectuated the Nigeria-Biafra civil war are still very much a concern. They remain unaddressed largely because a succession of leaderships did not want to walk the wire for Nigerians or take a middle-of-the-road approach to governance. We have had leaderships, with the exception of the Obasanjo administration, who put their ethnic and religious interests at the centre of governance.

We need to address the issue of ‘’ethnic origin and identity?’’ Am I a Nigerian because I am Igbo? Or Am I a Nigerian by virtue of my birth and allegiance to my country? The truth is most ‘’citizens’’ submit to their ethnic nationalities rather than to Nigeria. They derive their identity not from Nigeria but from their ethnic stock. It is the reason some of them can unleash violence on other citizens of different ethnic spectrum if they perceive their ‘’own’’ is violated.

We need to build a Nigerian identity. All ethnic nationalities must surrender their individual identities to a Nigerian identity. Like it is in Rwanda, it can happen in our country.

We must be deliberate about managing our diversity. This is where the leadership is remiss. There is no calculated policy to harmonise ethnic divergences and sensitivities; understand this chasm and forge a strong bridge across all lines.

The recent blockade of food supplies to the south should prick us to reflect on the unhinged compassing of our nation. We are on a delicate bend. Nigeria needs men and women who will rise to the responsibility of leadership and steer it ashore -- statesmen and nationalists – men and women who have conquered the lure of ethnic and religious cravings.

I understand the intervention of Yahaya Bello, governor of Kogi state, saved the situation – of what could have snowballed into an ethnic tit-for-tat. Though I learnt another governor was furious with him for intervening in the matter. According to my sources, the obverse governor told Bello that the ‘’south should be allowed to suffer’’.

Really, there are people in high places who live off Nigeria’s ethnic contours. We should starve them of this meal.

We need leadership.

May Nigeria succeed.

Health / Kogi Residents Are Not ‘guinea Pigs’, No COVID-19 Vaccine For Them: Yahaya Bello by IPOBTERRORISTS(f): 8:50am On Mar 06, 2021

Kogi residents are not ‘guinea pigs’, no COVID-19 vaccine for them: Yahaya Bello
“I am not going to subject the people of Kogi State to vaccination. I will not make them the guinea pigs.”

OYINDAMOLA OLUBAJO • MARCH 6, 2021
Yahaya Bello and the vaccine
As Nigeria commences COVID-19 vaccination, Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi has insisted that his administration would not subject the state’s residents to it, as “they are not guinea pigs.”

Speaking during a Channels TV programme, Mr. Bello boasted of his health status and said he would never receive the vaccine because “he is hale and hearty,”

Peoples Gazette had reported that there was controversy over daily update in Kogi, after the governor rejected the number of cases recorded, contending reports that COVID-19 existed in the state.

He had also warned Nigerians against vaccination, stating that it was an attempt to wipe out the population and not to contain the spread of COVID-19.

Subsequently, Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 flagged Kogi as a high-risk state over the governor’s doubt, the absence of testing facility and isolation centres.

“A state that is not testing at all is an absolute high risk for Nigerians to go there because there is no testing facility and even if you fall sick, there is no isolation centre, and they don’t even acknowledge that the disease exists. So for that reason, we put that state at the top of the high-risk states,” stated Mukhtar Muhammad, the National Incident Manager of the PTF.

However, Mr. Bello, on Friday, said the state had more serious issues to deal with, rather than COVID-19.

“COVID-19 is not our business in Kogi State. We are dealing with more serious issues in Kogi State, not COVID-19. COVID-19 is just the minutest aspect of what we are treating in Kogi State,” he said.

“There has been an outbreak of Lassa Fever, Yellow Fever and those were handled without making noise. On the last Yellow Fever outbreak, we vaccinated our people against it, we encouraged them, we educated them and they felt the impact because it ravaged some communities in Kogi State.

He, however, said that any residents who wish to be vaccinated were free to do so, if the federal government would provide vaccines, adding that his administration would sensitise them.

“They came up and we vaccinated them. So if the Federal Government is gracious enough to give us COVID-19 vaccines, we are only going to sensitise our people, whoever wishes to come and take should come forward and take the vaccination,” just as he noted that “I am not going to subject the people of Kogi State to vaccination. I will not make them the guinea pigs.”

Asked if he would join President Muhammadu Buhari in receiving the vaccine, Mr. Bello said “Mr. President is the leader of this country. I respect him so much. All of us respect him so much. We love him and he is leading by example. If he needs to take the vaccine and he takes it, it is a welcome development. As far as I am concerned. I, as a person, don’t need to take a vaccine. Nothing is wrong with me, I am hale, hearty, 100 percent healthy. I can give you my health report anytime you desire it.”

According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the state currently has five of 158, 042 cases recorded across Nigeria, which officials attributed to the governor’s relentless frustration of testing for the rampaging virus.

Politics / Uyo: A City Besieged By ‘street Children’ by IPOBTERRORISTS(f): 8:25am On Mar 06, 2021
By Iniabasi Umo
Sat Mar 06 2021

It is now a common feature to see a large number of children and teenagers at strategic areas in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State. They are seen at the Ibom Plaza roundabout and major streets like Ikot Ekpene, Oron Road and Abak etc, especially where there is traffic congestion, either hawking sachet water, cleaning vehicle windscreens or begging for money.

Daily Trust learnt that some of these “street kids,’’ as they are popularly known, were forced into the streets after their parents/guardians branded them witches or wizards as revealed in various prophecies by some prophets or pastors, while others ran away from home due to the overbearing attitude of their parents/guardians. A few of them are, however, there with the permission of their parents.

Those who were branded witches/wizards, mistreated or simply ran away from home are mostly indigenes of the state. They are the sachet water hawkers and windscreen cleaners, while those who beg are either non-indigenes or foreigners.

It was observed that those who beg for alms usually come to the streets very early in the morning to besiege motorists and other road users with phrases like, “Find me something, madam and, Oga help me.’’ Others just give drivers imploring looks and gesticulate by repeatedly lifting their hands to their mouths to indicate that they are hungry and want to eat.

These children, whose ages range between three and 18, are not working alone, as their parents, guardians or bosses, mostly women, sit by the roadside or demarcating structures to receive ‘earnings’ from time to time.

Apart from being very persuasive in their demands, some of the children go as far as harassing pedestrians, especially females by clinging to them, just to get alms.

They are easily identified by their very dark skins, while some of them barely speak English. Their predicament notwithstanding, they make brisk income on a daily basis.

One of the women at the traffic lights along Abak Road, who identified herself as Fatima, suspected to be the mother of one of the children, and is probably 20 years old, told our correspondent that she came from Niger Republic to work in Nigeria. Fatima added that she was hungry and needed to eat.

Asked if she found the work she came to look for, she refused to comment and simply walked away.

At Ibom Plaza, where some of the street kids are often found, it was difficult to locate them when our correspondent visited the area, which is often a beehive of commercial activities with a mixed multitude, especially youths.

Ms Dorothy Edet, the chief executive officer of Mind Kitchen Academy, a non-governmental organisation committed to the welfare of street children, confirmed that they were mostly found at the plaza.

Edet, who said she had been working for the welfare of street children in the state for the past six years, told our correspondent that they had created a family for themselves and look out for one another. They even have leaders, according to her.

She said the children could easily congregate in large numbers with an offer of free food and cloths.

“If you carry out a research you would discover that some of the children roam the streets because their parents drove them out of their houses in the name of prophecy, saying they were witches and wizards. So they have no option than to do what they are doing to survive. That is why they are called street children.

“These children are innocent of the accusations against them. Some of them are orphans who stayed with their aunties, while others were brought to Uyo from various villages as house helps. They have been mistreated, to the extent that they now see the streets as home.

“Some of them don’t even know where they came from. When we came to feed the children on February 14, 2020, one of them, a 12-year-old-girl, said she came from Oruk Anam Local Government Area, but she did not know the village. She said she was brought to Uyo as a house help when she was eight years old.

“If you are looking for street children in Akwa Ibom State, just inform one of them that there would be free food and you would see the crowd that would come out. Sometimes we go out with 500 plates of food and it would not even be enough to feed them.

“They don’t have a particular location, but they have leaders among them. When you go to the plaza, check the ones that are bigger and tell them that you are from an organisation and want to feed them and give them cloths on a particular day, and you would be shocked at the crowd you would see.

“You won’t be able to feed all of them. They hold onto the food to make sure that all of them have. They are always willing to share with those who do not have so that all of them can eat. They are like a family and you cannot hurt one of them and go scot free; they will come for you,’’ she said.

She also said some of the children were intelligent and urged the government to relocate them to destitute homes, where they could be trained on skills to make them self-reliant. She added that there was the need to take them off the streets as their number was increasing on a daily basis, a situation that poses security risk for the state.

She continued, “I would advise the government to have a centre for the children. If possible, they should be taken off the streets because they are creating havoc. Some of them are becoming wild.

“Some of them drag your bag or even fight to collect money from you. Some just sit down and appeal to you to buy them food.

“But the Fulani among them drag you and would even want to fight you for not giving them money. So the government should come up with a policy to make them go back to where they came from. Sometimes you would want to board a bus and they would begin to drag your bag with you. But those from Akwa Ibom don’t do that.

‘The situation is getting out of hand; and they are many.

“People say they are very wild because they are trying to survive. What do you expect from people who have been pushed to the wall?

“They can be taken to orphanage homes and made to know that if they are caught in the streets again they would be taken to prison.

“Give them the ability to learn entrepreneurship skills. There is a destitute orphanage along Oron Road, where we can train the children on computer literacy and different skills. They can sew cloths, make ties, facemasks, liquid soap etc.

“If the government can empower these young people, they would be taken off the streets; they are extremely intelligent.’’

Edet also said that some of the children, especially the female ones, were being exploited by some unscrupulous persons in the society.

She said some of the girls had become pregnant, and the unknown men usually take away their children after birth.

“Majority of the girls are being exploited by men who are into rituals. If you go to the plaza you would see one that is pregnant; she is dark and very beautiful. If she gives birth, people would take the child away from her, and no one knows where they would take it to. And within three months she is pregnant again. So people are going there to exploit the girls,’’ she said.

Efforts by our correspondent to hear from the commissioner for women affairs and social welfare in the state, Dr Ini Akpadiaha, were not successful as several phone calls and text messages to her phone were not answered.

Our correspondent also visited the ministry to get the response of the director in charge of children, but he was referred to the commissioner, saying she was not authorised to speak on the matter.

Several calls were also put across to the commissioner for information and strategy, Mr Ini Ememobong on the issue, but he did not respond at the time of filing this report.
