She was eight months pregnant.

A teacher eight months pregnant lost her unborn child in a hit-and-run while driving home from her baby shower.

Mashayla Harper, 24, was driving her Honda Accord near Soso in Mississippi on Saturday when she was struck head-on by a Nissan Titan pick-up truck.

The suspected driver of the truck, 33-year-old James Cory Gilbert, fled the scene and left the teacher lying on the side of the road, fighting for her life.

Gilbert has at least three DUI convictions dating back to 2008; he was convicted of felony DUI and possession of methamphetamine in 2015, according to the the Laurel Leader Call.

He admitted to police he had been drinking the day of the crash, and a small amount of marijuana was found in his abandoned truck at the scene of the accident.

“This one is more egregious because the suspect knew he struck someone and caused life-threatening injuries,” said Sgt. J.D. Carter of the Jones County Sheriff’s Department. “(Gilbert) truly fled.”

Sgt. Carter said Gilbert was arrested later that night after the Sheriff called Gilbert’s wife and asked her to tell her husband to “do the right thing”. “I’m glad he came clean about it,” Carter said.

Gilbert was charged with leaving the scene of an accident that caused death or injuries and is being held on a $100,000 bond; however the charges and bond may increase pending the result of his blood tests.

When asked by court reporters why he fled the scene, Gilbert replied: “I was scared… I’m very sorry. I’m so sorry.”

After undergoing surgery Harper, a fourth-grade math teacher at South Jones Elementary School, was upgraded from critical condition to stable.

“To see our baby go from this being the happiest day of her life to I.C.U. in a matter of minutes was a complete tragedy,” her father Maurice Pruitt Sr posted on Facebook.

“That idiot hit her head on and left her out there on that road to die. We are grateful for the individual that happened to be in the area hunting to come to her aid, otherwise we may not be sitting in I.C.U. praying as she fight for her life…. She’s a very strong woman and she (will) continue to fight for her life.”

Buckingham Palace is understood to be ‘disappointed’ at Harry and Meghan’s decision to quit senior royalty amid claims that the couple did not tell the Queen before they announced their departure on social media.

They made their announcement on their official Instagram account this evening following speculation about a move.

Following their statement, the BBC’s Royal Correspondent Jonny Dymond said on Twitter: ‘BBC Understands that no other member of the Royal Family was consulted before Harry and Meghan issued their personal statement tonight, the Palace is understood to be “disappointed”.’

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman followed up by saying that discussions with the couple on their decision were ‘at an early stage’, adding: ‘We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through.’

It came after Harry and Meghan wrote on social media: ‘After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution.

‘We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment.

‘We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages.

Two men who featured in a documentary alleging sexual abuse by the singer Michael Jackson can pursue legal claims against two of his companies, a court has ruled.

Wade Robson and James Safechuck claim they were abused by the singer in the late 80s and early 90s while staying at his Neverland ranch.

Jackson died in 2009 but his family have denied the claims.

They described the documentary Leaving Neverland as a “public lynching”.

A inferior court had dismissed lawsuits brought by the 2 men in 2014 because California’s statute of limitations required that claims of childhood sexual assault be filed before an accuser’s 26th birthday.

However a replacement law, which came into effect on 1 January, extends the timeframe up to an individual’s 40th birthday.

Both Mr Robson and Mr Safechuck claim they were abused by Jackson from the ages of seven and 10.

Vince Finaldi, the lawyer for the 2 men, said during a statement following the ruling: “We are pleased that the Court has recognised the strong protections California has put into place for sexual assault victims under the state’s new law extending the statute of limitations.”

Howard Weitzman, a lawyer for Jackson’s estate, said: “The Court of Appeal’s ruling merely revived lawsuits against Michael Jackson’s companies, which absurdly claim that Michael’s employees are somehow liable for sexual assault that never happened.”

WhatsApp will stop working on all phones running Microsoft’s Windows Phone or Windows Mobile software from TODAY 31st December, the company has confirmed.

Facebook, which owns WhatsApp, said this is because it no longer actively develops for Windows mobile platforms.

Users of these Microsoft operating systems have not been able to create new WhatsApp accounts since earlier this year.

The move comes after Microsoft announced plans to finally kill off its phone software and urged customers to switch to an iPhone or Android phone in January.

Every year the messaging app, which launched in 2009, removes support for devices that ‘don’t offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app’s features in the future’.

It removed support for older Windows-based phones at the beginning of 2018, at the same time as it stopped supporting all BlackBerry OS devices.

In 2020, WhatsApp will remove support for some older Apple and Android devices.

Android versions 2.3.7 and older, as well as iOS 8 and older will lose support for the messaging service on February 1, 2020.

Android 2.3.7 was known as Gingerbread and launched in 2010. It is only running on about 0.3 per cent of Android devices, according to Google.

According to Apple only 7 per cent of devices are running a version of its mobile operating system older than iOS 12 – which was released in 2018.

The Facebook-owned messenger service will continue to provide support for devices running Android 4.0.3 onwards and iPhones running iOS 9 and onwards.

WhatsApp said: ‘This was a tough decision for us to make, but the right one in order to give people better ways to keep in touch with friends, family, and loved ones.’

This is the latest casualty of Microsoft’s defunct Windows mobile OS.

A 13-year-old girl who was sexually abused by her father for four years died while giving birth to his child, police in Brazil have said.

Schoolgirl Luana Ketlen died on December 11 after she was admitted to hospital suffering severe abdominal pains, before medics discovered she was pregnant.

Doctors decided to induce labour and delivered a baby boy – who has survived – before rushing the girl to a specialist care unit. She died en route.

Police subsequently issued a warrant for 36-year-old father Tome Faba, saying they believe he began abusing his daughter when she was aged just nine.

She gave birth to a premature baby boy who miraculously survived.

But following delivery, the girl’s health took a turn for the worse and test results found she was suffering from multiple complications including cirrhosis of the liver, water on the lungs and low blood pressure.

Luana died while being airlifted to a specialist hospital in Manaus, the Amazonas state capital, some 225 miles away (363km).

At a press conference, Coari police chief, José Barradas said: ‘The teenager lived with her parents in a rural area outside the city.

‘She did not realise, until two months ago when she began to feel pains in her abdomen, that she was five months pregnant.

The federal government says it will withdraw the military currently stationed in some volatile spots in the country beginning from the first quarter of 2020.

Ibok-Ete Ibas, chief of naval staff, disclosed this while briefing state house correspondents after the national security council meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday.
The military commenced specialised operations in various parts of the country following increasing security challenges.

Some of the military operations were targeted at ending banditry and cattle rustling in the north as well as militancy and kidnapping in the south.

Ibas said part of what was agreed at the meeting is to gradually halt the operations after an assessment of areas involved.

He said the assessment would help determine where peace has returned to enable civil authorities led by the to assume full control of security.

He added that the withdrawal o troops will also allow the military to focus on its primary duty of defending the nation against external aggression.

A father shot dead on Christmas Eve in front of his wife and young child has been named as the brother of a reality TV star.

Flamur ‘Alex’ Beqiri, 36, was peppered with bullets on his return to his £1.5million home at around 9pm on Tuesday.

As the gunman fled the scene of the slaughter on Battersea Church Road, south London, emergency services were scrambled.

But, despite their efforts and those of a health worker neighbour to save Swedish record label owner Mr Beqiri, he was pronounced dead.

Mr Beqiri’s Facebook profile photo is a picture with his sister, Real Housewives of Cheshire star Missé Beqiri with the caption: ‘Brothers!’

A 76-year-old ‘Good Samaritan’ was battered to death ‘with her own walking stick’, while trying to help her neighbour, 32, as she was attacked in the street.

The elderly victim, named locally as Sandra Seagrave, is believed to have intervened to try and stop a man attacking the other woman on Hazel Way in Crawley Down, West Sussex, at around 10.20am yesterday.

Witnesses said they heard a man shout ‘I’m going to kill you’ before Ms Seagrave, known as Sandy, and her neighbour were both found dead on the street.

The man, 37, was found badly injured inside a house and arrested on suspicion of murder.

He is now in a ‘very unstable condition’ under guard at Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

Shocked neighbours paid tribute to Sandra today and revealed that she was a widow whose husband had died five years ago.

Ian Pratt, 61, an engineer, told MailOnline: ‘Sandra was a bit abrupt but when you got to know her you realised she was a lovely woman.

‘Sadly her husband Frank passed away about five years ago so she was on her own.

‘She had had a dog which died. But she still liked to walk around a lot.’

Another neighbour who gave his name as Dennis added: ‘She was known as Sandy although her name was Sandra. It’s absolutely tragic.’
