Bilbao has been a solid team for years.... They've struggled to get to UCL positions because of the incredibly good performance of the likes of Villarreal, Real Sociedad, Real Betis.

In case you don't know, Athletic Bilbao are the only club asides Real Madrid and Barcelona to never go to relegation. So they've got a rich history. It ain't as If they're that poor.

One thing I think limits Bilbao so much is their policy of only playing Basque players. If they bought players from everywhere else like other clubs do, they'll easily compete better. That's one of the reason why it's incredibly difficult to buy their players.

In the last 15yrs Bilbao has consistently been in #4-8 position over the years.

That’s why I say La Liga is weak. Athletic Bilbao earning a UCL spot is an embarrassment to the league. Last season, Manchester United was the worst I’ve ever seen, yet they still destroyed an in-form La Liga team. That should tell you all you need to know about the quality of the league.
