It is unfair to conclude that Soyinka isn't smart. I graduated with a 2:1 myself, and I can confidently say that my performance could have been even better had I not been heavily involved in extracurricular activities. Academic grades alone don't fully capture a person's intelligence or potential

Our education system is not helping young sharp mind to fully explore their God given potential due to unnecessary courses, poorly structured lecture times to mention few. I was a barber in my undergraduate days. My shop was 77km away from ABU, Zaria. I purposely not moved it to Zaria so that I can be 100% dedicated to academics while in school and do the same to business. Some lecturers will fail to come to class in accordance with the time on the timetable and still be threatening you with attendance. But I was unfazed, I already gone through all of these in my ND days even while studying tougher course like chemical engineering and graduated with upper credits despite the unencouraging 1st semester result.
