Zoning in Anambra APC: A Recipe for Mediocrity

The debate around zoning in Anambra APC has sparked intense discussion, with some arguing it's essential for fairness and others claiming it's a hindrance to progress. I firmly believe that zoning is a misguided approach that prioritizes geographical location over merit and competence.

By restricting candidates to a specific zone, we risk overlooking exceptional leaders from other areas who could bring fresh perspectives and innovative solutions to the table. This approach can lead to mediocrity, where the most qualified candidate is not necessarily the one who gets the party's ticket.

It's time for Anambra APC to move beyond zoning and focus on finding the best candidate for the job, regardless of their geographical location. Only then can we ensure that our state is led by a visionary who can drive real change and progress.

PAUL CHUKWUMA: THE FEAR IS UNNECESSARY

That the APC has suddenly become the main opposition—if not the only opposition—in Anambra State is something party faithfuls never saw coming, even to the optimist amongst them. After the disappointing loss in the 2021 gubernatorial election, morale in the party hit an all-time low. Notable leaders took a back seat, disinterested and disengaged. Party members were left stranded—orphans with no leadership.

This was the state of the party until Paul Chukwuma, a longstanding and long-suffering party member, dared to challenge the odds. He embarked on a one-man mission to ensure that the party he helped build did not collapse. Single-handedly, he activated the party’s 326 wards, making APC visible again with gigantic billboards and consistent media presence. Since political survival in Nigeria is built on activities, Paul created them relentlessly, bearing the financial burden alone.

The result? A massive influx of aspirants into the Anambra APC and a party that has not only survived but is now thriving. Unlike the PDP, which has faded into irrelevance in Anambra, and the Labour Party, tethering towards collapse, the APC has found a resurgence—all thanks to Paul’s unwavering efforts.

And yet, what has Paul received in return? Some have pleaded amnesia. Raising dust over his reward - offering feeble arguments.

One of such arguments around is that an Umueri man should not govern Anambra because an Aguleri man has. This is a joke—comic relief at best. Governance is not about where someone comes from but about their ability to provide transformative leadership. Paul’s Umueri origin, a neighbouring town to former Governor Obiano’s Aguleri, presents neither a moral nor legal obstacle to his candidacy—except in the minds of politicians bent on creating imaginary divisions. Leadership has never depended on geography nor vicarious benefits. It makes no sense that someone with the knowledge, expertise, and leadership capacity to move Anambra forward should be held back by such baseless reasoning. The real questions are:

Can Paul lead APC to victory in November?

Does he have the vision and leadership to transform Anambra, tackle insecurity, and create jobs?

Will he remain committed to the party even if things do not go as planned?

If the answer to these posers is yes, then it is the duty of every true party member to support him.

It is high time we reined in selfish politicians whose only contributions to Anambra’s development are the imaginary lines they draw to divide us.

Transformative leadership flourishes when talent is borderless—when skills and competence take precedence over tribal and familial affiliations. The South-West understands this and has leveraged it to drive progress. In SW one can be a commissioner in Lagos today, and later on proceed to hold another political post in Osun, transferring experience from one state to another. We see this in the case of Senator Adeola Yayi who represented Lagos West for eight years before seamlessly transitioning to Ogun West. Leadership, in its truest form, knows no artificial boundaries. Anambra must learn from this model and discard outdated zoning sentiments. Across the South-East—whether in Imo, Abia, Enugu, or Ebonyi—the majority of voters do not care where a leader comes from. In Imo State, one zone has governed for over 20 years with everyone feeling unperturbed because it doesn't matter. What matters is competence. Zoning is nothing more than an elite conspiracy to limit the transfer of leadership skills, and it does not resonate with the people.

The fact remains that there is no better alternative in APC currently except Sir Paul Chukwuma. Onwa has demonstrated that youths can gradually grow politically. As the former South East youth leader of this party and later National Auditor, Paul Chukwuma's progression is a testament to his dedication. The choice before our party is clear: we must ensure that good progression is sustained for the overall interest of our party.

The APC in Anambra must learn to reward loyalty and commitment. Those who have sacrificed for the party must not be cast aside for political travelers who only remember the party when they need a platform, only to jump ship when they run out of luck in the party. The party must send a strong message that loyalty matters—that APC exists to empower its dedicated members, not to serve as a fallback option for political nomads.

No one in this race has been more faithful to the party than Paul Chukwuma. Beyond his loyalty, he has the intellect to match the incumbent, the charisma to connect across all demographics, and the leadership capacity to drive real transformation.

It is time for Anambra APC to put its fears aside and throw its full weight behind Paul Chukwuma.

Anambra Gubernatorial Primaries: What the APC must do

As the Anambra APC gubernatorial primary election draws closer with the APC looking to select a flag bearer for the November 8th Anambra gubernatorial election, it is pertinent to appeal that certain considerations be made as a reference point in the selection of a worthy candidate.

Long-suffering party members must take a moment to reflect on the best candidate who has shown loyalty to the party and possesses a cross-sectional appeal that cuts across the voting strata.

That the APC, which was once dejected and seemingly accursed by many, became a beautiful bride that has been cleaned and adorned with alluring robes was a result of those party faithful who painstakingly underwent the arduous task of making it so. They toiled day and night, putting brick upon brick to see that the party was equipped with both administrative and operational entrapments.

Party faithful, in aligning with the progressive agendum of the party, should critically assess candidates who embody progressivism and can perpetuate the RENEWED HOPE mantra. A candidate who is intellectually and socially cognisant of the real problems facing Anambra with the requisite capabilities that can inspire hope in the hearts and minds of Ndi Anambra.

In shopping for this candidate, the APC members in Anambra should look at having the overall interest of the party at heart. They should filter away the noise and focus on substance; likewise removing chaff to obtain a useful and valuable commodity that can be sold to ndi ANAMBRA without any fear of dirt and baggage

In Igbo cosmology, a name can foretell the destiny of a person. It is for this reason that our parents name us after remarkable events or as a summary of their hopes and aspirations.

It is no error that Paul was named after Apostle Paul, the fierce and brave lover of Jesus who was never scared of taking risks for what he believed in. Our own Paul is no different. He has shown bravery in all his actions. He is never afraid of taking on odds; he is small yet mighty. He is also a firm believer in the Almighty—yes, Chukwuka. Born into an Igbo society still healing from the civil war, and raised by a civil servant father, he lacked luxury but possessed an unrelenting drive to succeed. His love of God led him into the seminary in search of a way to serve, but like his namesake, Paul, he had his eureka moment—God can be served in many ways. For him, it became through entrepreneurship, creating value and services for all of humanity.

Buoyed by his absolute faith in God, Paul Chukwuma has risen to global prominence—leaving a trail of distinction in his academic pursuit from the University of Nigeria to the University of Derby. He has gone on to make significant strides in the business world as the Founder of Olivia University, the fastest-growing science-based, English-speaking university in East Africa. Sir Chukwuma's accountability and transparency is the one I recommend, because these two factors are benchmarks of a quality and a good leader.

The wasteful spending of the Soludo administration and his reserving approach instead of moving forward is a total charade of governance. A government who in the last 3yrs has refused to be accountable and swallowed the entire security votes of the State, all of a sudden wakes up from a deep sleep to fight insecurity.

A serious government will identify its problems from the first day in office and begin to tackle it head-on.

In the APC family and other aspirants I beg of you to really around one single Anambabrian with multiple sagacity and capacity, a true Democrat with a clear blueprint for Ndi Anambra state. A man who has cared for much for the party, who has been standing with the party and continued to support the party, providing every equipment needed to pilot the affairs of APC.

An APC Chieftain, Obi Trice in his appearance on TVC's Politics Tonight among other things touched on how frontline APC governorship aspirant *Sir Paul Chukwuma* donated a befitting and spacious new party secretariat to the APC as part of his many efforts to reposition the party to become a beautiful bride and a vehicle for electoral success.

Sir Paul Chukwuma has continued pay for the ward offices of APC in the 326 wards of Anambra State for years now and sustained the expansion and recruitment of members into APC in the state.

*A Message of Condolence to the People of Nnewi and the Family of the Bereaved*

Yesterday , February 14th, 2025, will be etched in our memories as a day of unspeakable tragedy. The devastating accident that occurred in Nnewi has left us all in a state of shock and grief.

On behalf of myself, my family, and the entire APC family, I extend my deepest condolences to the families of the victims, the people of Nnewi, and the entire Anambra State.

This senseless tragedy has robbed us of precious lives, leaving behind loved ones to mourn and pick up the pieces. My heart goes out to the families of the deceased, who must be going through unimaginable pain and sorrow.

Under his leadership as our dear, Governor acceptability and transparency with inclusivity will be the top-notch of his administration.

The meeting which started at 12.04pm with the founder of Ikemba front Dr Chidi Okoye doing the preamble was presided over by the Deputy National Coordinator Hon. Chinedu Ukachukwu deliberated extensively on many issues and took the following resolutions.

1.The Coordinators at different levels should engage/mobilize members and new members as we are in election year.
2.That all Communications to the LGA Coordinators should be known to the Coordinator of all Coordinators Mr Osita Ikegwuonu.
3.That Sir Paul Chukwuma Stands Endorsed by Ikemba front as her preferred APC Governor ship Candidate for Anambra State 2025 Governorship election.
This decision was reached after all possible aspirants profiles were reviewed.
4.That Sir Law Ezedinachi now becomes the state Coordinator of IKEMBA FRONT Enugu chapter, this follows the withdrawal of Chief Ifeanyi Nwandu the former Coordinator for domestic reasons.

5.That Sir Hon.Arinzechukwu Awogu Stands removed as the National Coordinator and expelled as a member of ikemba front, this decision was reached as he refused to present himself to the national meeting and ImeObi meeting to respond to the allegations levelled against him.
6.That Hon Chinedu Ukachukwu (Akunne n Okija) The Deputy National Coordinator now becomes the Acting National Coordinator of IKEMBA FRONT.
7.That Ikemba front will work assiduously to ensure that Sir Paul Chukwuma emerges as the APC candidate during the party primaries, and subsequently wins the governorship election in November 2025.

Businessman, Jonas Ifinta Revolutionises Technical Education in Awgbu with New School Complex

In a historic event held on January 2, 2025, philanthropist and businessman Jonas Ifinta has unveiled a two-story school complex at the All Saints International Technical College (ASITEC) in Awgbu to serve as a workshops for skills acquisition. This landmark project, fully funded and donated by Ifinta, aims to bridge the gap between theory and problems solving in Nigeria’s education system.

Addressing the audience, Ifinta spoke passionately about the importance of equipping students with practical skills, noting that the absence of such training in Nigeria’s current curriculum has exacerbated unemployment.

He said

“I have always been fascinated by technical skills. The major issue with education in Nigeria is that the current curriculum doesn't transfer practical skills. As a result, graduates often remain unemployed due to the absence of skills, while employers struggle to find skilled workers. By the grace of God, we have now dedicated this school complex, which will serve as the workshop hub for students to acquire practical skills and become useful to society on graduation.”

Bishop Paulinus Ezeokafor, who officiated the dedication ceremony, commended Ifinta for his vision, resilience, and generosity in completing the project despite the prevailing economic challenges, he described Ifinta as a true champion of development, whose legacy would be forever tied to the progress of technical education in Awgbu.

The Parish Priest of All Saints Catholic Church Awgbu, which oversees the school, assured guests that the institution would remain committed to its founding purpose and ideals.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the occasion, Alloysius Okoye, applauded Ifinta’s remarkable contribution to the community and encouraged other Awgbu indigenes to emulate his example. To sustain the school’s growth, Okoye announced a personal donation of ₦1 million towards infrastructure and equipment.

Further donations included ₦5 million from Engr. Agodi Egwuonwu, designated to support teachers’ salaries for five years, and €3,000 from Reverend Father Innocent Nwafor, alongside €1,000 raised from his friends, to enhance teachers’ welfare.

The commissioning event was graced by notable dignitaries, including the President-General of the Awgbu Progress Union, Engr. Chris Okoyeudor, the Chief of Staff to Governor Soludo, Ernest Ezeajughi, representatives from the Ministry of Education, Emmanuel Akidi, members of the Diamond Club, and other community leaders.

*Dozie Ikedife gets endorsement from Nnewi North APC to finish late Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah's tenure*

On 13th December, 2024 the race for who will attempt to fill the huge vacant shoes left by late Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah in the Anambra South senatorial district took a symbolic turn when the All Progressives Congress (APC) family in Nnewi North LGA led by its chairman, Mr Innocent Orizu successfully convinced an illustrious son of Nnewi soil, Chief Dozie Ikedife Jr. (Ikenga Nnewi) to contest in the Anambra South senatorial bye election.

At an extraordinary meeting of the Nnewi North LGA chapter that was presided over by the Chairman, which also had in attendance many stakeholders in the Nnewi political scene who are not members of the APC, various speakers harped on the need to get someone who understands the vision of late Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah to continue this vision and expand his legacy.

Setting the tone for the evening was the Chairman of Otolo Nnewi Ward 2, which is the home ward of Chief Dozie Ikedife Jr. The Ward Chairman stated that after the shocking departure of Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah, the wards in Otolo came together to discuss on the way forward and reached a unanimous resolution that they will appeal to Chief Dozie Ikedife from Ward 2 to go forth and complete the senatorial race started by Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah. He added that it was very easy for them to arrive at the choice of Ikenga Nnewi because of his excellent leadership resume and grassroot appeal.

The Ward 2 Chairman therefore announced before the expanded LGA stakeholders meeting that Chief Dozie Ikedife has received the overwhelming endorsement of his home ward to vie for the Anambra South senatorial seat and pleaded with Ikenga Nnewi to accept the collective mandate of the people to contest, assuring him of total backing at the polls.

In her remarks, an illustrious daughter of Nnewi from Otolo Nnewi ward 1, Dame Esom Nwafor Orizu thanked the stakeholders present for coming out as a family to appeal to one of the their own to take up the torch left behind by Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah. She noted that Chief Dozie Ikedife Jr is a man imbued with excellence and has demonstrated capacity for inclusive leadership across many spheres of life. She confessed that her respect for Dozie Ikedife skyrocketed due to the many selfless roles he played in Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah's political family where his sole motivation has always been giving the people the opportunity of a better life through a promise of responsive governance.

Dame Esom Nwafor-Orizu therefore announced her unequivocal support for the candidacy of Chief Dozie Ikedife Jr and expressed confidence that he is the best possible option to continue the legacy of Ebubechukwuzo in Anambra South senatorial district. She therefore appealed to all well meaning sons and daughters of Nnewi and indeed the entire Anambra South family to honour the memory of their departed Senator by supporting one of his most trusted ally to complete the journey he started at the Senate.

In his own remarks, Hon. Onyedika Chukwuma (Acobarry) who is the Leader of Afaigbobuofu and a prominent member of late Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah's political family said that the choice of Chief Dozie Ikedife to step in to complete Ubah's tenure at the Senate is one that has received widespread endorsement including from the wife of Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah who sees Ikenga Nnewi as a worthy replacement for her departed husband at the Senate. Acobarry went further to reiterate that the bye election is not about political parties this time around but about the individuals and who can continue a worthy legacy for ndi Anambra South senatorial district.

The State APC Organising Secretary, Chief J. C. Okeke who was also at the meeting in a brief remark noted that APC is now a beautiful bride judging by the steady stream of new entrants into the party from other political parties both at the national and local levels. This he said means that people outside the party are seeing something attractive in the party to make them want to join APC. He therefore encouraged all those present at the meeting to see the party as their own, stand firm and boldly project the party at their polling units and most importantly, guard against internal sabotage under the excuse of a perceived poor reward system in the party.

After many remarks from other speakers, the APC Nnewi North Chairman then formally put to a voice vote, the appeal/motion made by the speakers calling on Chief Dozie Ikedife to vie for the Anambra South senatorial seat. It received a resounding affirmation by all stakeholders from all the wards in Nnewi North LGA chapter of the APC which include all LGA executive committee members and all the Ward executive members that make up Nnewi North LGA.

While responding to the endorsement from his political base to step into the big senatorial shoes left behind by late Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah, Chief Dozie Ikedife Jr began by expressing his profound gratitude to the APC family in the LGA and even other non-APC stakeholders from the LGA in attendance for the overwhelming endorsement and bold request.

He promised to yield himself to their demands and try his possible best to repay the confidence and trust reposed in him by the people. Ikenga Nnewi also stated that, even though its nigh impossible to completely fill the shoes of Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah, he will do his best to ensure that the ideals which Sen. Sir Paul Chukwuma’s Campaign Gains Momentum with Ward, Cluster and LGA Appointments

Efforts to revitalize and reinvigorate the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State received a significant boost on Sunday, October 13, 2024, as the Sir Paul Chukwuma Primary Election Campaign Council approved the appointment of 326 Ward and 21 Local Government Area (LGA) Coordinators. Additionally, 59 Cluster Supervisors were appointed, alongside a plan for securing new office spaces in all 21 LGAs and 326 Wards in the state. These strategic moves signal the Chukwuma campaign’s intent to secure widespread grassroots support ahead of the party’s primary election.

Addressing the directors at a council meeting, Director-General, Hon. Ifeanyi Ibezi urged team members to remain steadfast and dedicated as the campaign to secure the APC nomination for Sir Paul Chukwuma intensifies. Emphasizing the Council’s overarching goal, Ibezi stated, “Our purpose is to ensure the visibility of the party in Anambra State and build trust at all levels of the party structure. This requires a strong, coordinated grassroots approach, which these appointments will help facilitate.”

The DG went on to stress the need for unity, noting that “the 326 Ward Coordinators and 21 LGA Coordinators will serve as the bedrock of our mobilization strategy. They are the face of the campaign in every community, charged with reaching the grassroots and amplifying the positive vision that Sir Paul Chukwuma embodies.”

Further bolstering campaign infrastructure, the Council approved plans to establish new office spaces across all wards and LGAs in Anambra. This expansion aims to foster accessibility and presence, allowing more APC supporters and undecided voters to engage with Chukwuma’s vision directly. “The modalities for opening these offices are set, and we will waste no time in executing these plans. These offices will be beacons of our campaign’s values and objectives in every corner of the state,” Ibezi explained.

Ibezi called on all directors to commit themselves fully to the task at hand. “This campaign goes beyond just winning a primary - it’s about demonstrating that APC has a credible and strong future in Anambra State,” he remarked. He encouraged them to reach out and communicate the campaign’s message effectively, building confidence in both the APC and Sir Paul Chukwuma’s leadership.
As the Chukwuma campaign gains momentum, the newly appointed coordinators and cluster supervisors are expected to play critical roles in energizing the APC base and broadening support across the state.

Sir Paul Chukwuma could have been a priest. He had spent the early part of his life fascinated by the thoughts of the priesthood and how priests were the agents of transformation in many communities in the hinterlands. Then, he had an epiphany; if he excelled academically, he could make the world a much better place through entrepreneurship, just as he could have through the priesthood.

Paul Chukwuma, born on February 27, 1978, at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Ihiala, is the second son of Mr Titus and Mrs Florence Chukwuma, both of Nneyi, Umueri, in Anambra State. His father was a devout Catholic and a civil servant with the water corporation of the old Anambra State. As the son of a civil servant, Paul would traverse the lengths of Anambra State as his father got posted from one location to another. The family would later settle at Ekwulobia in Aguata LGA of Anambra, where he grew up. The family still maintains a family house at Ekwulobia.

Paul's father, who wanted him to be a priest, influenced his entrance into the Juniorate Seminary in Ihiala, where he initially trained to be a priest; however, providence had other plans for him.
He enrolled at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, between 1997 and 2001 to study philosophy and graduated with a first-class degree. Poised to become an entrepreneur, he would reject the offer to join academia because of his passion for entrepreneurship.

In 2020, he graduated from Baze University, Abuja, with a law degree and proceeded to the University of Derby, United Kingdom, between 2022 and 2023 for his master's degree in law, graduating with a distinction in Intellectual Property and Information Communication Technology Law.

Paul Chukwuma is also a 2006 alumnus of Lagos Business School's Owners-Managers Programme. He is currently enrolled at the Nigerian Law School, Abuja.

Born eight years after the Nigeria-Biafra war, Paul saw firsthand his people's survival skills and various innovations to survive despite the odds.
Despite his initial desire to become a priest, the young Paul would soon be influenced by his childhood memories and understood that there were many other ways to make the world a better place other than the vocation of priesthood.

His luck came during his NYSC days, when he was posted to the National Assembly for his mandatory one-year service and, through a stroke of luck, found favour with one of the National Assembly's committees. He would recollect with nostalgia how he would travel on night buses to Lagos to make purchases for the committee to beat the quotation of their existing suppliers and return with a night bus within 24 hours to Abuja with the supplies.

He would follow his passion for writing, mainly buoyed by his love for Afrocentrism, to set up Amity Press, publishers of Amity Magazine, with some of his friends. Through the exposure of publishing, which took him to the UK for the first time, he contacted the owners of an ICT Management Software. He became their representative in Nigeria for almost a decade.

Paul Chukwuma is currently the founder of Olivia University in Burundi and the Pro-Chancellor of Benue State University in Makurdi.

A son of a devout Catholic, Paul believes his success in life has been as a result of grace. He credits his father's sacrifices as the source of that grace. His traditional moniker is Onye chi n'azo, O si na ya n'azo onwe ya. He recollects his father's generosity to the poor and his service to the church, which he often misunderstood as a child for laying the ground for what he has become. He says, “For every period in my life where it appears, I have hit a wall, something miraculously happens, and doors open."

Paul, a former National Auditor of the All Progressives Congress (APC), believes that the problem with governance in Anambra is the absence of home-grown solutions and the over-reliance on a theoretical framework that is not relative to our group's history. For him, public service is the only way to make an impact that has a multiplier effect on millions of people:

“As one who believes in charity, I have kept giving and providing to the needy, but it appears that the more I give, the more those I give multiply. Thus, I realised that we have to limit the source of poverty and enlarge group prosperity, and public service is the only way to do this. Reluctantly, I had to leave my comfort zone, so I offered to join the fray. I have pragmatic ideas that can make Anambra the commercial centre of Eastern Nigeria."

Sir Paul Chukwuma Felicitates With Ndi Anambra As Nigeria Celebrates Independence Day

Philanthropist and leading aspirant in the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Anambra 2025 gubernatorial elections, Sir Paul Chukwuma (Onwa Umueri), has felicitated with Ndi Anambra and Nigerians on the occasion of the celebration of Nigeria’s Independence Day.

A statement from Mr James Eze, Spokesperson of Sir Paul Chukwuma Gubernatorial Primary Campaign Council said that Sir Chukwuma is optimistic of the bright prospects the future holds for Anambra state and Nigeria. He quoted Sir Chukwuma as saying;
“The occasion of the celebration of Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day anniversary is a time for reflections on how far we have come as a nation. The task of making Nigeria greater is a collective one. Both the leaders, elected officials, politicians, students, women, youth, market men and women, and others must join in this onerous task. We may not be where we want to be as a nation but the abundant resources and talent that God has generously blessed Nigeria with gives me much hope and confidence of a glorious future “.

“While we think about Nigeria, we have to also sadly think of our dear state Anambra, and the current state of affairs. Insecurity is still a major challenge and has become an existential issue. Our people now mark important family events outside the state such as weddings and funeral ceremonies as a result. This is unfortunate. It’s obvious that a better way is possible and that’s the message of hope we are giving our people”, Sir Chukwuma concluded.
