Nothing wrong in government subsidising product for its citizens. Government is all about the welfare of the people and subsidy is part of the welfare.
Why givernments officials are against it is because it favours them more than the ordinary citizens. Anything that could benefit the common man is a no for them. The issue of fuel subsidy has lingered in Nigeria’s political space for decades. Successive presidents acknowledged the economic damage caused by the subsidy regime, yet none had the political will to end it. It took President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2023 to take the decisive step and remove it. The decision was difficult, but it was necessary.

The immediate aftermath of subsidy removal was painful. Transportation costs rose, inflation climbed, and households felt the pressure. No one can deny that. But to focus only on the short-term pain is to ignore the larger picture. If subsidy had not been removed, the consequences would have been far worse, both for the economy and for future generations.

One of the clearest benefits since the removal is the increase in funds available to state and local governments. With subsidy gone, the monthly allocations to states have grown significantly. This means governors now have more resources to pay salaries, fund projects, and meet obligations without relying heavily on loans.

During the subsidy era, the story was different. About 27 out of 36 states struggled to pay salaries regularly. Developmental projects stalled across the country. Many states were forced to take heavy loans just to stay afloat. That cycle of borrowing created long-term problems that we are still trying to fix.

Atiku Abubakar himself recognized this problem. In his 2022 campaign promises, he agreed that subsidy was a fraud and that it needed to be removed. It is therefore contradictory that as the 2027 election approaches, he is now saying he will bring subsidy back if elected. That reversal raises serious questions about consistency and policy direction.

Beyond politics, the practical reality makes a return to subsidy impossible. The NNPC has been privatized and is no longer in a position to absorb subsidy costs. At the same time, fuel importation is now largely handled by private players like Dangote Refinery. Who then would pay for subsidy? The government cannot simply dictate prices in a deregulated market without creating another financial burden.

It appears that Atiku’s statement is more about political messaging than economic planning. With elections near, opposition figures often make promises designed to appeal to struggling citizens. But promises that cannot be implemented in the real world only create false hope. Subsidy removal may be unpopular, but it is a policy grounded in economic reality.

What Nigerians should be asking for is not a return to subsidy, but better management of the savings from subsidy removal. The additional funds going to states and the federal government must be used transparently for infrastructure, healthcare, education, and social support. That is how the pain of today can translate into progress tomorrow.

Reversing subsidy would mean going back to a system that encouraged corruption, waste, and unsustainable debt. It would mean starving states of funds again and mortgaging the future to pay for consumption today. That is not reform. That is regression.

Subsidy is gone, and it should remain gone for good. Nigeria cannot afford to return to an era that weakened our economy and rewarded inefficiency. What we need now are leaders who will build on the difficult decision already taken, not those who will undo it for political gain.
